This hardware store has been in West Berkeley for well   over 50+ years and although seems to struggle to keep  up with the times is our only place to go for household  nescessities.
I understand that those that own the store want to shut it down, I think that's why Jerry doesn't order merchandise like he did before.
The owners 'want' to hike up the rent and force him out.
If(they) will let him keep our store that i'm sure Jerry would improve the quanity of items We need.
There's a coffee pc place next door that attract to a certain type of clients.  Neighbors go to the doughnut shop a few doors down where most people meet.   It's a neighborhood, user friendly & welcoming coffeeshop.
The hardware floor still creaks when you walk in as to say 'Your Back' as it did when i was younger, I'm 58 now.    I'm glad it's here b/c it's hard for me to find anything closer where I can get things to fix up my house.  This place is all We have,  We all can;t  go to Homedepot or other nearby stores like this one.
It's hard to carry things on the bus or when it's raining.
My hope is that the Owners and Jerry can work out a deal to keep the hardware store open for the neighborhood that attracts and contributes to the community at large.    Angel the 'other' staffer isn't bad either and helps w/the spanish speaking 'growing' community.    Don't let me dig up an old picket sign cause' i'm ready!  ; )    There isn't much in the store,it's in critical condition  b/c we don't know if We'll have this store next year .  Why buy so much if the future of the store  will not be allowed to remain opened ... PLEASE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE STORE,MAYBE THEY'LL BE A CHANGE OF HEART.  BE WELL & THX,  merced ~*~

I really like this place for a local hardware store: walking distance from my house, really friendly and knowledgeable staff, painless returns. Yet, like everything else in Berkeley, it closes waaaaaaaaaay too early. Who the heck can make it there by 5? I have a hard time making it to the cheese store by 7. Sorry, minus 2 stars for closing so early and on Sundays. I really don't want to give my money to OSH but sometimes I have no choice.

I try to visit here at least once a week. The selection is not as big as some big-box store, but they have everything you need, and you can just buy one screw or one sheet of sandpaper (which I often do). The guy who usually works here is usually knowledgeable and helpful. Yay for small neighborhood stores.

A great old-fashioned hardware store. Isles of hardware, nuts and bolts, paint, etc. They also have a selection of household goods and appliances. Prices are reasonable, but if you figure the cost of your time and driving to a "big box," their probably about the same.

really sparse selection. went in with a list of things for the new apartment (a multi-plug adapter for 2 prong outlets, shower head holder, on-command adhesive hooks for hanging, drawer rail hardware for the loose drawers in the kitchen, a silverware caddy) and they didn't have a single thing i was looking for. not only is the selection really limited, but as i browsed the isles i noticed that they only have one or two of each thing they do carry. aside from the two friendly guys who work there, i'm not sure how this place stays in business.
