This was my first dog park. I like it - separate areas for little and big dogs. Most people actually watch their dog instead of using it as an unsupervised babysitting yard. No random poop to step on.
Has a playground outside the dog park for the kids. -

Brought my two dacshunds here for the first time today... and they LOVED it!!! They aren't the most socialized but they got along great with the other dogs that are more their size since this park is split into the big/little sides. I'm so pleased with this park's cleanness and that it's fenced in with plenty of poo bags avaliable for use.
My girls are now snoozin on the couch after having a fun day of play.
Needless to say, we are looking forward to going back to this park very soon! -

My dogs and I love this place! Plenty of shade and separated small dogs area. Perfect 'cause my small dachshunds are afraid of larger dogs. I'll be coming here for now on=)

The park itself is GREAT... but the people that I encountered when I took my dogs were TERRIBLE. It is a very cliquey park and some people can't seem to mind their own business. Be warned.

Great park. The owners are attentive and friendly. I love the grassy area, especially after going to Harry Griffen in La Mesa and dealing with the dirt. I also like the fact that there is lighting for the winter months. I will be back...but not in an Arnold Swarzenegger cheat on my my wife and have an illegitimate child kind of way...

My pooches were giving me smooches after taking them to Wells Park. True the location may not be the cream of the crop so for that I will minus a star. The separate areas were definitely a dog must. As you walk through the fenced area you will see small doggies on the left and large doggies on the right. We entered to the right and let our two golden retrievers run with the wind blowing their ears back. The fenced area had doggy fountains and bags for doggy doo along the fence and the area is kept really clean.
For children there is a nice play area with swings, many slides, monkey bars and one of those tire swings that if you wind up really tight that thing can spin out like no ones business. There is also a nice picnic area and the restrooms seemed clean. Remember with all there is to do you can have your sweet pet right next to you to join in on all the fun.
My doggies will definitely be back. -

After having seen a couple other parks now, Well's is by far the best dog park in the county.
If you have a small dog who plays well with big dogs, just take them over to the big dog side and don't bother with the little dog side. People on the little side are bitchy, whiny, and can't tell the difference from playful dog growling and when their dog is being "attacked". The folks on the big dog side know more about dogs and how they should behave. They also know when they should take their dogs out for bad behavior where on the little side... "Oh, Fofo wouldn't hurt anyone." Bullshit. Don't waste your time or endure the headache.Listed in: Two Paws Up

This park is great!!!! I love how there are 2 sides and the grass is in excellent shape. I also love how there is gravel. With my Rottweilers still being puppies they were the smallest of the "large" dogs. Friendly owners and all were very attentive of their dogs. Will be going back

Each time I go I'm more and more pleased. The park itself is clean, has shade, a table/seating area, water fountain, poopie bags, big guy/little guy dog segregation, and is fully fenced.
Of course your experience will depend on who comes to the park that day. Some sketchy folk here and there BUT, every single time I've been, I've chatted with friendly dog owners and had a great experience. Or, if you're the quiet type, you can find a little spot to just sit back and dog watch.
And my two lil' guys have a great time. Head's up -- if you might be awhile, bring your lawn chair -- many people here do. Oh, and my dogs are toy snatchers. But we give them back! -

I'm taking off a star total for both crappy owners and the sometime sketchy people at the park after dark. I've lived in EC my whole life so i guess i'm used to it but i've even been weirded out a couple times.
the dog park is great. Lighted and has two separate sides. one for big dogs and one for little guys. I usually scope out the owners to see who is there because a few of the regulars use this as a social gathering instead of watching their pooch. but other than that it's great! clean, well maintained, water fountains and poop bags are on hand.
two thumbs up! -

I love this dog park....well I am a bit lucky to have it so close, being only a short five minute drive to the park. There's decent parking, close by restrooms, water fountains for both people and their dogs, plenty of trees with shade, and two completely gated areas for both big and small dogs. Sorry, I can only review about the big dog side. Anyways, I must warn some people about this park...
1. First off, try not to go on weekends. The people who come on weekends tend to be rude and have timid dogs that might not like rough dog play. Parking is also sometimes a problem on the weekends because the dog park is within a park so a lot of birthday parties tend to take up parking. As for the dog park, on the weekends, if you have a dog that has never been to the dog park and may be a little timid or unsocialized, you should take them on the weekends.
2. Small dogs and children: As for small dogs, if they cannot handle being on the big dog side and get pushed around by the larger dogs, please keep them on the small dog side. With children: If you have small children that you would like to take to the dog park with you and your dog, please supervise them. In the small dog area, children may accidentally "break" them because some of them have fragile bodies. In the big dog area, keep your children from running because some dogs may see this as play and may accidentally trample over small children. If you do not have children, supervise your dogs because many kids from the park come into the dog park as if it were a petting zoo and tend to run over or get run over by the dogs.
3. Poop duty and water: Please do notice when your dog goes. When you don't, you end up with "mines" everywhere in the park. If your dog does not like to drink from the fountain then you have two options: You can bring your own bowl and fill it up for your dog (Though, other dogs will often "steal" the water...my dogs do it all the time). You can also put an empty poop bag on the drain so it acts as a bowl, but please remove it when your dog is done.
4. Know your dog. If you can't differ play from aggressive, then don't bring your dog. With most dogs, there is a clear difference between play and trying to kill the other dog. Often some owners will panic when their dog plays and does nothing when it nips and/or growls at other dogs. If your dog is aggressive to the point where you are constantly having to watch your dog, you should either have them trained or not come because they may eventually hurt another dog.
5. People around the park. Biggest warning! This park is, so to say, in the hood. So there tends to be a lot of "interesting" and pretty creepy people there. Luckily, for the most part, it stops at the gate to the dog park. Most of the creepy people don't go there for the dog park. Thank god!
Dogs with a Rep
There are a few dogs with a reputation at the dog park. Come anywhere between 4:30pm- 6pm on weekdays and you'll see three of the coolest dogs at the dog park...Three huskies, Chaz, Taz, and Brandy. Chaz is big, white and will want you to pet him...and I suggest you do otherwise he'll sit on your feet and lean up against you. Taz is a brown husky that will talk to you. She'll come up to you and howl at you (most noticeable known as the Wo-Woooo's). Brandy is gray and will lay by her owner and watch over the crowd. She may occasionally come up to you wanting attention and by all means, give it. They are all very sweet and do not be afraid to pet them.
The nicest pit bull you will ever meet is Sully. Sully is a kinda porky, sweet, lovable white and brown pit bull who will always come up to you looking for attention. He is always so sweet and really shows that not all pits are mean.
Unfortunately, on the other side, one of the meanest pits that goes to the dog park is a black and white pit bull with a non-attentive owner. This dog has a history of attacking dogs and people...YES this dog has attacked people! You'll know which one it is right away because it might go after your dog (It's gone after both of mine) for no reason what-so-ever. It's owner never leashes or takes the dog out of the park. Sometimes he won't even notice when his dog attacks another dog. But please don't be afraid of the park because of this dog. It is a great park that I love to go to and would recommend to any dog owner. -

This is one of the nicest dog parks I've seen. The dog park is split into two sections, one for big dogs and one for small dogs. Both sides are completely fenced in so no worries about having our four legged little ones wandering off. In addition to nice lush grass and trees, there's also a paved, shaded area picnic tables.
The shade definitely help to keep everyone cool. The park is kept really clean. I would definitely take my boys here again! -

I have been going to this dog park for years (for one year twice a day almost every day) so I've seen a lot.
First, a little about the entire park in general. I have rarely seen park so popular and well used. On the weekends there are lots of ad hoc soccer games, Pee wee football practice, lots of grass, a nice walking circuit, a nice baseball field. I've seen as many as six bouncy domes (not sure exactly what they're called) for kids at one time so well used for parties. Yes, there are some homeless people around but I have never heard of anyone having a problem with them. The police patrol the area frequently and the meeting rooms are used by the police on weekday so you will usually see several police vehicles there. They just built a new restroom facility closer to the parking lot.
The park is open late which is a great feature but they could do a better job of lighting the entire path to the dog park which is in the back of the park.
Now for the dog park - Most of my experience is on the large dog size (I have two standard poodles). I've been to lots of dog parks in the county and I would say that this is overall the best for the facilities and people. it is very well maintained, full of grass, a nice hill breaks adds to the visual aesthetic and dog play. Great features:
- small and large dog separation
- covered area at entrance
- lots of poop bags dispensers
- lots of grass and trees for shade
- well fenced in, impossible for dogs to escape
- well lighted at night (closes a 9PM most nights)
- nice dog water fountains
- patrolled by EC animal control - so bring you dog's collar
- opens at 7AM. Maintenance is usually done on Tuesday so may not open until 7:30 on those days. Maintenance guys are very nice, please tell them about any issues or concerns you may have.
Generally, the people who go there are great and are responsible. In my experience the wild card times are later in the evening and weekends. Particularly weekends when it appears that people who haven't been to dog parks before and are testing out how their dogs will do. Mornings usually see a nice crowd of regulars and they are great people to talk to about dog issues, ask questions and share experiences.
I have seen a few serious dog fights but that is par for any dog park. Most have involved a pit bull or similar dog.
Please remember you dog park manners:
- pick up after your dog. If you think your dog pooped but you can't find it please pick up some other pile that might have been missed by other owners
- keep close to your dogs and watch what they're doing. Most of the bad incidents have occurred when the owner is sitting on the bench and their dog is on the hill, a good 50 yards or more away. Usually if the owner had been closer they could have had better control over their dog and likely prevent dog fights.
- If you bring a dog toy be prepared for another dog to grab it, take off with it or tear it up - that is what dog's do! If it is a toy you really love don't bring it.
- If your dog is a 'ball-dog' and all it like to do is chase the thrown ball, that's fine, but don't get upset when other dogs want to play with your dog and interrupt your game of fetch or snatches your ball.
- always have a collar or harness so that your dog can be grabbed if necessary.
- If you stick you hand in the middle of a dog fight you will be bit so don't get upset later on.
- If you bring children keep a close eye on them and don't let small ones run wildly - dogs like to chase and may knock your child down. Try to teach you kids how to act around strange dogs.
- If you want to bring your small dog in the large dog section make sure it can hang with the big dogs.
- Some people's dogs don't drink well from water fountains so they place a poo bag over the drain so it can fill up. If you do this please remove the poo bag when you are done. A communal bowl is a great way to pass on bugs like kennel cough.
Okay, off my soap box. Please enjoy this park! -

this is my favorite dog park in the city for several reasons:
+ it is fully fenced in
+ tons of room for pooches to run their brains out
+ separate sides for big dogs and small dogs, so the small dog owners don't complain when my lab jumps on their mini dog.
+ a doggy sized water fountain. one less thing to carry! though my dogs prefer to sip from the human side on their hind legs.. quite the spectical.
+ an entry-way where you can unleash your hound without actually being inside the park yet.
+ picnic tables for humans
+ regulars who usually keep a close eye on their dogs (although there's always the occasional idiot at any dog park)
+ light at night time
the only negative
- closes at 9pm and is closed on most holidays
take your four legged friend here... you will both have a ball! -

We took Topher here this weekend to let go run about. The park is about 1 1/2 acres and the dog park is about 1/4 of that. The hours were from 7-9pm and I especially liked that there were large lights to keep the park lit at night for the dogs. The park is separated into two sections. We put Topher in the small only because there weren't any large dogs around. Both sides had gravel and grass. The park was a little tricky to find at first but we managed. Also, be sure to bring your own toys for the dog because there are not many laying around. And a bowl if your dog doesn't like to drink out of a low water fountain.

This dog park is lit at night but the gates are locked at 9. There is a seperate area for smaller dogs. The downside is the long walk from the parking lot to the dog park. Nice hilly grass area. I have heard other complain about homelss but i have not seen any around the dog park area. They have a nice seating area for humans and it seems to be very clean, You might want to bring your own bowl and water though because the fountain is right near the gate and there doesn't seem to be any other bowls around. ,

My dog Floyd likes to mingle with other canines and this is one of the places we go. It's nice because it is just a short drive away. I also like it because it has lights so we can go there at night and not have any prob seeing what we might be stepping on. Yes it might be a tad small, but it is enough room for him to run around. There are bags, trash cans, and even a water fountain for us humans!

I just went to the Wells Park Dog Park for the first time today. It's great to have a nice park that has fully enclosed areas for both small and large dogs. My little terrier would just keep running if it wasn't fenced on all sides! The dogs were quite well behaved - and the owners were always quick to correct if they weren't. I would give it five stars but the neighborhood is a little iffy. The park itself is great. I'll be going back again soon.

I go to SD once a week due to my work, and my little pooch is usually with me, we been searching all over for a nice park to kick back before heading home and after several tries (Kearny Mesa, Morley park, etc) I have to say this is the best dogie park we've been to! the grass is well kept, place is clean, people and dogs seem nice and the main thing is the two areas to keep the big n small dogs separated! great place!

The only reason I gave this park a two star is because of the people. We are a very, very responsible Pit owner, our dog loves going to this park. I witnessed a few things this past weekend, one a man with a black and white pit gives us a bad name, his dog was so aggressive toward other dogs, yet he wanted to tell everyone else how to control their dog. As for Poop Patrol yeah the old guy with white hair and a long beard that needs some trimmin, anyway he likes to tell you your dog took a dump while your dog is still taking a dump ok buddy one your gonna get a talkin to if you approach me thanks but we know how to take care of our dogs, two when your getting water for your dog and another dog is waiting to get a drink why not just put your foot on the fountain that was a bit rude. As far as other people have met some great people and enjoy going there other than the two idiots I have encountered great park.
