Review from Ken M.
Artesia, NM
The Wellhead is another "must eat" place if staying in Artesia a few days. They brew a nice variety of micro brews and good food to go with it. Thursdays are "shed red" days when they serve their famous red chile enchiladas which are a must try. They also have good steaks and burgers. I've found their flat iron steak is much better than their more expensive steaks. They do close early (as everything does in Artesia.)

Good: the beer, the service.
Not as good: the special I tried, the large obnoxious party sitting nearby (but it is a bar....), and it closes really early during the week. -

The Wellhead is a cool place to stop in if you're a beer lover, and like trying microbreweries. I'm not really a beer lover, but I love trying new places and microbreweries intrigue me.
They have a beer sampler you can buy, but my husband (a beer lover) just went straight for the stout. It was called Crude Oil Stout (or something to that effect) and in my opinion was pretty much what oil or some other filthy substance would taste like. But he thought it was pretty good, especially considering the source. I tried the wheat, which is sort of my standard at microbreweries, and it was fine.
They have a full service bar, so our night was topped off with a couple of shots after we ran into one of my husband's best friend from high school that had disappeared off the face of the earth. Turns out he was just hiding away in Artesia - which is sort of the same thing I guess.
The only thing that sucked was that they stopped serving food pretty early, but stayed open fairly late. A disparity in service that doesn't always work in bars.
Definitely a place you should check out if you happen to cruise through this little corner of the world.Listed in: To The Middle of Nowhere from…

Went for dinner - had their Red and a steak. They had a few different types of steak and unfortunately the waitress wasn't too familiar with the different types to explain the difference to a former vegetarian. Some of the meat-eaters I was with helped and I was pretty happy with my choice. I had the porterhouse cooked medium rare.
Now, almost $30 for a steak is a lot. But being used to California prices, this didn't really phase me. It was quite delicious, though cooked slightly unevenly. Part was rare and part was a bit closer to medium.
If this wasn't the only decent place in the middle of Southeastern NM, I'd only give this trip 3 stars. But since it is one of the high points of my trips to New Mexico, I can't possibly give it below 4.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Happy J.

My first visit (lunch with a friend) was disappointing.
The "service" that **REALLY** set the tone was when our lunch was brought out. My friend ordered a bowl of stew that included a warm tortilla. When the waiter brought out our food, the tortilla was on top of my plate. The waiter removed it with his bare fingers and set it on the table (not on a plate) next to my friend. When I asked if he really wanted to do that, he replied the tortilla comes with the stew and he walked away.
If this place does such an inappropriate action in front of the guest, what is going on behind the scenes?!?
They also brought me the completely wrong order. As we were in a hurry, I chose not to have it remade and asked the correct menu item was noted on the bill. Fortunatley, the bartender was nice enough to remove from my bill.
Will I try this place again? Maybe. Right now, it's at the bottom of the list for places to eat in the Artesia area. -

Great beer and atmosphere! Shelly, the interim manager, regaled us with stories of Artesia's, the brew pub's, and the Yates family's pasts, and gave us a quick tour of the place pointing out photos from the bygone days.
They make several great beers (we started with a taster set of all styles) before selecting pints of a superb and smooth stout labeled Crude Oil and the Wellhead Pale Ale. All the beer names are takes on the oilfield industry.
They had prime rib the night before which they turned into fantastic but greasy (the greasier the better?) Philly Cheese Steaks sandwiches filled with grilled onions, and sauteed mushrooms and yellow, red, and green bell peppers.
We left with lots of memorabilia including hats, shirts, pint glass, and a growler filled with Pale Ale. This is a great stop on the way to where ever you are going, but if you stop, make sure you tour the town's bronze statues which are really beautiful and well done--especially the oilfield derrick. As it should! -

We ate at the Wellhead while spending a night in Artesia during July 2008. It was within easy walking distance of the heritage Inn, had been recommended to us, and we thought it was very pleasant atmosphere. We were there in the early evening hours and base don the crowd it seemed family-friendly. The food was fine and the beer was good. We would certainly return.

My brother and I randomly stumbled upon Wellhead on a cross country drive and what a pleasant surprise. Everything from the tasty microbrews (my favorite was the wellhead pale) to the southwest chicken and southwest steak sandwich (special) were delicious. the helpful and friendly wait staff only enhanced the experience. Thanks!
