Parking is always going to suck when trekking down to little tokyo, so get over it.
With that said, this place has a great happy hour menu. Most food items were around the $2-$4 range. We ordered the garlic fries, fried calamari, and chicken quesadilla [which came with small dipping portions of salsa & guacamole]. Quesadilla was a bit dry, but after adding the salsa and guac, it was pretty decent. The garlic fries were pretty dang garlicky, but definitely no complaints. Who doesnt enjoyed fried potatoes smothered in garlic?? Fried calamari was...eh. Wouldn't order it again. I had the WBR Honey Blond Ale which was pretty yummy.
All in all, they had several different sports on tv, plus last weekends UFC fight, a jukebox that played good tunes, servers who were attentive, and a mixed crowd which made it interesting.
Good times at the Weiland Brewery for happy hour.
Since I only had a app on the happy hour 3 something for my cheese quasadilla. I still can't spell that word. Next time I will try the dozen shrimp. The band played out on the patio, they also have tables and serve food and have a bar out there. The place was actually in a nice part of Little Tokyo. Weiland's brand beer was ok but I still prefer my New Castle. It was ESPN day inside so you could here people going nuts inside.
Parking was 6 dollars I wish I new about the 3 dollars back if the bar validates it I would have done that, I guess they don't advertise it.
Never really had their regular meals. But we usually go for the late night 1000pm+ happy hour!
A mixed crowd with a jukebox with your mixed bag of songs playing. The beers are good off the tap (special H.H. price for the Weiland's brand) and the H.H. appetizers are pretty good too. DON'T order the wannabe Asian spring rolls though. Everything else that's fried is OK!
I enjoy the t.v. screens that broadcast ESPN Sportscenter...after a long day at work..I get to catch up on my SF Giants and Dallas Cowboys scores!
A friend and I went here for a meeting and our dinner companion that we were meeting chose the patio. It was a Friday night at 7:30 and there was an extremely loud band playing. We had to try to talk over the music but they finally turned it down so we were able to at least eat in peace.
Despite the fact that our tacky companion didn't buy dinner for my female partner and I (biz not romantic), we ordered the filet mignon and I must say it was surprisingly tender and fabulous.
We ordered it with mashed potatoes and were not disappointed. We decided we would go again without the "meeting" aspect and I'm sure we would enjoy it. Its a casual place with decent food and the prices are reasonable.
We don't drink so we cannot speak for the alcohol; however, the steak was only $22 and it was a great cut of meat!
CON: The parking is $6 and when you eat, if you show your receipt you get $3 back. The catch is you have 90 minutes. When we came back with our receipt, the attendant said it had been 93 minutes so we didn't get out $3 back. LOL
I don't know why people here are booing this place for there food. Who comes here to eat? I don't come here to eat. Although, the first time I came here I did have some nachos and quesadillas. Pretty good.
This is a bar I don't mind going to, except it's not one. It's a restaurant. I love a particular gal there! So don't make a diss on all the servers and bartenders. I met her once and the second time I went there she already knew my drink. That's awesome!
And hey, I give props to places with the extremely loud hand dryer things in the restrooms. Ya know, they think green.
Perhaps I really enjoy this place because of the company that is always with me, but this place is a comfortable spot for me to have a drink and I always enjoy myself here. So Yay! I'm a fan.
p.s. Do not Park at the Office Depot Parking lot! You will regret it. The parking people do pay attention to where you park and where you go. I usually find street parking on 2nd Street..awh man, did I just give my secret parking spots away?
Pretty decent place. Its small, quaint, foods good, and beer is cheap, if you get there for happy hour. We usually hit this place up after 10pm, since they have a happy hour that goes from 10pm till closing. Since it is kinda small, if you go during the weekend, the bar area is usually packed, and the restaurant area will be too. The food comes pretty quick, but sometimes the waiteresses lag on the service on the drinks. Price wise I cant complain, once again, happy hour is da shitowski. Appetizers and beers are all half off.
One thing I always get when i go there is the Garlic Fries, and a pint of the house Hefe.
Overall though, place is pretty good.
This place was often closed whenever I would head into Little Tokyo, but over the last several months its become routine to not even consider going to another spot.
During much of the day, finding parking can be a hassle unless you're willing to put down the $6 parking fee for the lot that Weiland's sits on.
Stay away from parking behind it in the Office Depot parking lot, and I only say that to the people who make a habit of listening to what signs have to say ;)
The late night happy hour menu is great. The house beers are cheaply priced and the appetizers are mostly good. The buffalo shrimp are good, while the garlic fries are hit or miss. Your order will either be a mix of fresh and old fries or what looks like a bunch of leftovers. There have been occasions where I might as well have ordered garlic crumbs.
In the Old Fashioned Department: They don't have the ingredients to make one. Doh.
This place has freakin' delicious burgers and garlic fries! It gets a little crowded at lunch and the service is a little slow but sometimes you get them on a good day. Their apple martinis are good, not all watered down like some places. My friend is a regular here and on her birthday one of the dudes sang to her and gave her a free glass of bubblegum vodka. Not bad :)
Went here after a free concert at California Plaza. Our friend suggested their late-night happy hour (10 to 1), and since I used to go here every once in a while when I worked downtown and had business meetings, thought "sounds good".
As for the happy hour, price-wise it isn't so bad: $2.95 garlic fries, $4 for most beers, I think $3.95 for calamari. However, the servers just don't seem like they want to be there. And, once the place hits 1:00 PM, watch out, they want you out of there - hovering over you like vultures! The kicker for me was when I went to put a dollar in to the jukebox and the bartender told me in no uncertain terms "PLACE CLOSED, NO MUSIC!". Hey man, you could have told me beforehand. How about my dollar back?
I'll try to make it back for an update, but as of right now, 3 stars, most because its an inexpensive option late at night with a good beer selection.
Our all time downtown LA favorite watering hole.
If the walls could talk. Great hang out area, amazing selection. Even offers Presidente rum.....wowwwwwwwww....
The Hef beer and the garlic fries are the way to go. Cool diverse crowd.....
Park behind the bar at the Office Depot, parking in front of bar is way overpriced.
I'm pretty sure I had gotten at the most 2 hours of sleep before coming here that night...so I was pretty grumpy, nervous because I was meeting someone for the first time, and tired enough to the point where I was ready to fall asleep in the booth. The atmosphere was kickin'...random music playing..(think some 80's hits and then a Miley Cyrus song..) plus there was also a Lakers game going on, so every 45 seconds people would yell in unison-- making my attempts at conversation completely futile.
Me: Yeah, Autism is fascinating...
*PEOPLE YELLING*
Cory: What? Autism is fattening?
Me: .....sure...
Also, I'm not a beer drinker. Nuff' said. But I ordered a fat tire and it was pretty good...accompanying my chicken sandwich and salad very well. The sandwich and salad were good--nothing to brag about, but prices were beyond affordable. Another perk about this place? Yogurt Land is right around the corner!
Traffic wasn't too bad heading up from Anaheim. I found parking right at the brewery (it helps to call ahead and find out if parking is available for a restaurant). Parking was $6.50 and the brewery will refund 3 bucks, comped.
I ordered a chicken sandwich and a chicken quesadilla along with a Hefeweizen. The Hef was tasty, yet, one of the sweeter Hef's I've ever had. Still very good. The flavor was there. For $2.50, you couldn't beat it. (Happy hour) The bartender hooked me up with a few beers at the Happy Hour price that I ordered after Happy Hour had ended, which I thought was awesome. She asked what I was doing there alone and I said I was visiting from the East Coast (NYC). I guess that intrigues Californians.
The inside of the place looked sort of like an old garage, with door and all, boasting brick walls and high ceilings. The waitress/bartender was very nice and attentive. The quesadilla was better than average. The sauce served with it was great, too.
I recommend heading here if you can handle being around obnoxious Dodger fans!
Come Fridays, I look forward to winding down, taking my heels off and letting my hair down just like the next girl. Often I head straight home to do just that. Some Fridays however, I feel like a proper end of the week happy hour is in order, meaning heading straight to a cool bar and meeting up with friends for some drinks and appetizers, and chatting and laughing about what's been going on in our lives. I love that! Lately, as we all are, I'm trying to be a little more frugal with my extra-curricular spending so I appreciate cheap prices for food and drink. The deals at Weiland Brewery for happy hour can't get any sweeter. Their happy hour prices start at 3pm and go to 7pm which is awesome, because often time I get somewhere and have only about 30 minutes left before happy hour is over, which means paying full price for food and drinks. And, not only is Weiland's HH extended, it starts up again at 10pm, and goes until closing time!
Their prices are excellent with $2.50 signature draft beer and an extensive appetizer menu with prices as low as $1.00, and the most expensive being $3.95! On the menu are things like: Garlic Fries, Hot Wings, Onion Rings, Buffalo Shrimp, Crab Cakes, Kettle Chips, Quesadillas, Jalapeño Poppers, and all of those fried-up finger foods you tell yourself you deserve at the end of the week! And look, the food is ok...don't come here expecting anything gourmet. Just enjoy the greasy goods with your cold beer and have a good time...for prices like that, you can't be picky, though really you can't go wrong with their Garlic Fries or Wings...they're good!
Many of the people that come here for the happy hour work close by, so getting there early to get a table or a spot at the bar is a good idea. They do have a section behind the bar area with lots of booths and tables so you'll likely find a spot anyway but you may find that it gets packed fast.
You can park in the lot right on the premises for about $5 and if that's full, there's a structure on the adjacent side on Central where you can park for $6.
This is a great happy hour spot. A little out of the way for the downtown crowd, but in Little Tokyo. There is a pay parking lot you can park at if you are not within walking distance.
There are plenty of tables and there is not a problem accommodating large groups. We were here on a Thursday night and the Bud Light girls were out in full effect.
Happy hour runs until 7pm and the specials are great. $2.50 for their beers that they brew there. There is a large selection and also the food is cheap. $4 for most things including chicken wings, quesadillas, and onion rings.
All in all, a great spot for your group.
Got here *just* after happy hour. A good place to hang out with friends, get some dinner, or decompress after work. The biggest plus for this place is their garlic fries. The garlic was crazy strong--just the way I like it! Ordered a burger, which was decent but nothing extraordinary. When we got there, it was pretty open. Not too crowded.
Weiland has a good selection of beers at very reasonable prices--I didn't try the house brews, but they looked good enough to drink. Seemed like a decent stand-by, or a great place to meet with lots of coworkers or friends.
I'm pretty sure this review is gonna be really really biased. Here is the story of how I ended up at Weiland Brewery Restaurant. I woke up that morning at 4AM. Ate maybe half a baggie of wheat thins. We left the house by 530AM. Got to the Coliseum at 7AM. Waited outside Coliseum gates until 930AM. Waited inside Coliseum until 12PM. Watched the 1 hour Laker parade ceremony. Fought the crowd and exited the parking lot. Waited in traffic until 330PM and still hadn't eaten anything but the wheat thins all day. We visit my cousin downtown and were taken here. By that time, we were off the Laker hype and just plain hungry.
Thank god it was happy hour! The regular meal prices weren't that attractive even in my state of hunger I was hesitant to order anything off the menu. So happy hour appetizers it is! I got the garlic fries, grilled chicken quesadilla, and calamari (yes, I'm fat). Garlic fries - pretty darn good. I've had my share of garlic fries (BF = giants season ticket holder = gilroy garlic fries all the time). What was good about these is that they weren't potato wedge style, they were more crispy and oh so garlicky. I love my garlic and these def hit the spot! My quesadilla - nothing amazing. Probably something I could of made at home with a tortilla, cheese and some chicken. The calamari - surprisingly good. Not chewy, but soft and yummy.
In short, my experience was probably at a 3.5. If I hadn't been so hungry and it hadn't been happy hour, it would have been a 2.5 stars. We did not get to experience any beer or other alcoholic beverages, so I can't rate them on that.
After Tuesday Night Cafe in Aratani Court we always walk down to Weiland's to partake in some late night happy hour grub. My rec's are the buffalo wings dry. All the goodness of wings without the mess! The hef there is also superb. Good peoples, good food, good times!
Great place for lunch and happy hour. I always get the crab cake sandwich. The buffalo wings are pretty delicious also. Make sure to get your fries with GARLIC. It tastes so much better.
My buddies and I went in for our lunch hour (and a half) during the week. There was no hostess to greet us. Instead, we were sighed at by a waitress punching in someones bill. That was awesome. Right off the bat we knew we were in trouble. She ran off to deliver the other table's check before she sat us. She didn't even say 'hi'. All we got was a "this way, please". We were lucky to even get that, lol. Then she darted off, never to be seen again.
We waited around for a good fifteen minutes before the manager(?, casually dressed, no apron) took our drink order. We got the drinks fairly quickly. About twenty minutes went by before our orders were taken. We got our food almost a half hour later.
The philly cheese steak sandwich was about average. It was smaller than other places' phillies. The steak sandwich wasn't cooked how he wanted it. He ordered it cooked medium, not well done. My other buddy ordered the seared ahi. He said it was more like "half cooked" than seared. The garlic fries are their only saving grace.
tl;dr version:
The service was slower than maple syrup and the food would've been better if prepared properly. The garlic fries are tasty.
Other thoughts:
If you've got more than an hour for lunch, or all you want is the garlic fries with fountain drinks, this is the perfect place for you. For everyone else, you're probably better off eating at Panda Express.
When you have a group of friends and a need to go somewhere where you can grab a table and drink/socialize and not spend tons of money, this is the ideal place.
It can get crowded because this is a place with fantastic beer (the house brews are really good-I prefer the Amber, most of my friends tend to get the Honey Blonde) and inexpensive. During their happy hours (yes, they have a late happy hour as well as the regular one from 10 til close), the house beers are $2.50.
The appetizers are really good, too. Garlic fries that will make you smell/taste of garlic for ages, tasty hot wings and other assorted goodies better than your average bar food.
Even during non-happy hour, the prices are very reasonable, which is why this place is always a great choice for hanging out with friends.
The drinks are cheap during happy hour. However, there is a mandatory tip included in the tab and with good reason...the cocktail waitresses aren't always up to par and they wouldn't get tipped otherwise. The drinks take too long to get the tables...if you go up to the bar, it's tooo crowded to get through, sometimes the waitresses are just plain inattentive... and i am firm believer a tip is earned not guaranteed. The Brewery is convenient if you visit the MOCA museum.
Wow what an incredibly atrocious experience. The bartender would not serve my friends who wanted a separate check so they can leave early. They ended up not drinking. And then then our waitress was rude and rolled her eyes. What a rotten place! I'm never going here again.
My experience here was so lame I don't even want to spend that much energy reviewing it. This place is really nothing special... it's like BJ's but without the good food selection. The happy hour is a good deal, but by the time you're done dealing with the large surly bartender at the front who addresses you not because you've been waiting to order a drink for 10 minutes at an empty bar but because he needs to tell you to move out of the way of a server briefly passing through... you won't be so happy.
This place makes me sad mostly because it's full of people who seem to be unaware of the vast and glorious drinking destinations LA has to offer, so they choose this place. That in itself is enough to make me cry into my ale.
A little preface, I'm still drunk from the place. The happy hour is hard to beat, when you can have garlic fries 3 rounds of beers and calamari for under $20. The only complaint that i have of the place is the wait because this place has become so popular.
You can draw on the butcher paper and no matter how many tables the servers are handling they still take care of you. Great place to get wasted and for very little $$.
Very stiff drinks and great prices. Very busy at times and hard to get a drink, but great staff. Excellent Happy Hour and the garlic fries will guarantee that you will not be kissing anyone. Calamari and Buffalo wings, mmmmmmmm, except when you had too many stiff drinks. They don't taste as good when coming back up.
Fun happy hour and food is decent. Bartender is a tad moody but everytime I've gone its been with like 30 people who become 30 drunk people so: Salud!
This review is just for thier happy hour. ends at 7pm.
beers on tap, i.e hef, coors, amstel, fat tire $2.50
selected apps about $3.00
score! for the beers and the apps. but wouldn't pay full price for the apps based on the quality.
would come back here just for hh..
I have only been here for the happy hour and that's good enough for me. Cheap beers, cheap food, and all good. Haven't been there in a while, but in terms of value this is a poor college mans dream. Although it was a tad bit far from my alma mater USC, by the time happy hour kicked in, traffic was gone and their huge parking lot made parking a breeze. Hassle free, good food, excellent prices gives this place 4 stars in my book. Service is a tad bit slow, but hey its not like I gave it a 5 right?
Weilands. I've always heard about this place from a bunch of friends. I had never been until recently and I must say it was a really good night!
Parking was a breeze and we got a couple tables in the back so we could drink outside. Our waitress was the shit. She had forgotten a few of our drinks earlier in the evening because she was SWAMPED and she gave us a few rounds on her. WTF! That is AWESOME! Free drinks are ALWAYS a good thing hence why I had one too many rum and diet cokes. LOL
Waitress was awesome. The bar was cool. Hella people were there. We were loud and it wasn't an issue (thank goodness). I can see how people wouldn't like this place since it gets so packed it's difficult to find a seat, especially for a big group, but we managed so my experience was awesome. Just watch it because cops are always around this place!!! Bring a DD, get your drink on, and get home safe.
- Big parking lot and parking on the street.
- Strong drinks
- Apparently everyone liked the garlic fries and chicken quesadillas.
- Good Hefenweisen (I had a taste)
- Awesome waitress
- Packed as a mofo
Good times! :)
The happy hour food is NOT amazing. the wings are ok but don't get the garlic fries or potato chips no matter how much you're drawn to them because they're $1. I'd much rather save my triglycerides for something else, like some tacos! However in these tough economic times, weilands happy hour really makes me smile :) i love me some honey blonde for $1.50! yep, one fiddy!! thankuthankuthankuthanku.
p.s. service leaves much to be desired but throw away all your expectations and just go for the beer. the end.
We dropped into this place for happy hour last week and it just didn't do it for me. The place really lacked any sort of energy... we went outside, and it seemed more like a storage for used kegs than anything- nothing there came close to resembling atmosphere. To top it off, NO ONE was happy with their beer... maybe we hit it on a bad day but bad beer and no character seem to be a daily occurrence.
Nice employees!
Good vibe and atmosphere!
mmm Garlic Fries!
yummy midnight snackies :) quesadillas..
i hear they have the BEST hot wings..they do look tasty..unfortunately I did not get the pleasure in tasting them.
Sweet potato fries :)
they give you a passport at the bar and you drink all the beers from different places..and then..i forget what happens after haha :) fun place though
I've had only fun experiences at this Weiland's near Little Tokyo. Come on, it's hard not to when there's a double happy hour -- one after work and another later in the evening. Great for those days when you've stayed late at work and need some food and libations to take the edge off a hard day.
The food is the usual bar fare. Nothing out of this world great, but nothing out of this world bad either. Lots of good beers on tap and usually a fun, diverse crowd. There's bar seating, tables, and a back patio which is nice if you can score a seat on a warm day.
their hefeweizen is pretty bland,
the buffalo wings are OK,
and the fried shrimp is ridiculous.... I think we only got 10 out of the dozen shrimp we were supposed to get and it costs close to 10 bucks!
place is OK if you just need a place to watch a game....
Whoa! I haven't been here in a while despite the fact I work just across the street at the museum!!
What I remember about this place: a dark interior with tables and booths along the walls; pretty tasty burgers, especially with my two free topping choices, bleu cheese and bacon; pretty decent salads; super-potent garlic fries; and a basic, but very nice selection of beers on tap, along with artwork on the walls for sale. Oh, and there's also ample parking. I don't know if Weiland's validates. I always walked here from work.
When I first went here years ago it was, eh; but over the years it's either really improved or I just got used to it. I like to think it was the former, and apparently others like Weiland's too, because it's always filled with people. It's is a good place to go when you're feeling the pull of bar food, rather than raw fish, but on my last lunch visit, the menu had expanded to include several (sort of pricey-ish) entree choices! Yeah, I still got the burger with bacon and blue cheese, though. I think the art for sale changed a little bit too.
It's not the best food in L.A., but you could do a lot worse than Weiland's which offers entree salads, pastas, and different sandwiches that come with a choice of their super garlicky fries (you can ask them to go easy on the garlic), in-house made potato chips, or a pretty nice mixed greens salad.
The service is neither great nor horrible in my experience, hovering in okay-ish territory. It really depends on who you get and what sort of day they had.
To me, Weiland's has become an essential part of the Little Tokyo landscape, offering a nice place for a beer and decent pub grub. I would be absolutely heartbroken if this place ever went belly-up; sometimes a lunch a Weiland's really hits the spot.
After all, one can NOT live on sushi and Sapporo's alone.
PS, if you drink too much, you can take the wheelchair ramp rather than the stairs; both are concrete and the short drop ends on asphalt blacktop.
This place is really good! Great beer, atmosphere and food!
I've never had their happy hour -- I usually get there too late ... but for dinner I usually get happy hour food-esque anyway. I personally like their junk food -- burgers, fish & chips, chicken wings -- all yummy goodness! I know their garlic fries can leave some stank breath but it's soooo good!
Plenty of beer choices -- you'll have a great time!
Totally worth it if it's during happy hour.
Sort of worth it if it's any other time.
Try the: house hef., garlic fries, calamari, buffalo wings and quesadillas.
Staff is usually cool, this place get's pretty busy so off peak hours is sometimes refreshing.
Park at Office Depot.
For a happy hour spot after work, this place is good. Drinks specials and tasty food.
Service is hit and miss, but it's made up with the good pricing.
Sometimes you just need a damn beer and you don't know where to go.
Well this is the damn place to go.
With 2 happy hours everyday, how can you go wrong.
But remember it is about the beer, they brew their own beers there so you can get a pint of beer for 3 dollars during happy hour. Now how awesome of a deal is that.
I reccomend the honey blonde ale or the heffenweizen, those are the best kind.
They also have some good appetizers for 1/2 price during the happy hours.
Now the happy hours are from 3:00 to 7 p.m. and 10p.m. to closing....EVERY FREAKING DAY!!!!!!
Martin Luther King is coming soon, so take advantage of hitting this place on a Sunday and you will have all day monday to recover.
