Perhaps I was a bit too critical with my earlier review of Wegmans, especially since I find myself shopping here on a weekly basis nowadays. My initial rating stemmed mainly from their high prices which led me to slot "Wage-Mans" right below Whole-Paycheck but slightly above the Giant Rip-off. But to their credit Wage-Mans has lowered their prices on most of the grocery staples that I buy, their bakery has awesome loafs of organic bread, and their produce is still par excellence among any grocery chain in the area.
I still avoid this place during the weekends, unless it is before 8am or after 10pm and still can't believe the Loudoun County Sheriff's department needs to direct traffic during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to avoid a full scale riot from breaking out. But I have that admit that Wegmans has made the mundane task of grocery shopping an enjoyable experience.

Garish is the word that comes to mind first when I step into Wegman's. Sure there is a hot food… Read more »
Dear Wegmans:
This is my second notice:
Your soups suck a big one. They all suck, every single last one of them sucks. I do have to say that it is refreshing for me to get a soup that isn't so salty that I feel as if I need to rehydrate after eating them though.
BUT my chicken noodle soup didn't have a single grain of salt in it, and the broth tasted like water. The chicken also had a funny taste. I didn't even finish a 1/4 of my 12 ounce cup which cost me $3.50.
PLEASE improve your soups because I am tired of wasting my money.
Also, please provide me with a cattle prod to shock the fat cow soccer moms that I have to wade through at lunch because they are completely oblivious to their surroundings. They all look as if they shouldn't eat for a week and would like to try out for 'The Real Housewives of Loudon County" if such a show existed for this area.
On a positive note, your meatball sub rocks my face off.
Thanks,
Mitch R.

Just like every other Wegmans you will go to, which is a great thing. It gets very crowded for… Read more »
Wegman's is really as good as it gets, as far as grocery stores go.
They have everything! This store is like the Disney grocery store. I love all of the things they have but most of all I love the bistro area that looks like the Italy pavilion at Epcot! I mean, they went all out with the decor and seating, and making it look like a little market area. There is always alot going on, people giving out samples in various areas. It's just fun to watch while you eat. The food is always fresh and there is always plenty of everything. Near the milk and juice isle, there is a train track up above where the lights are. The train loops around and goes back and fourth. It's so cute! It's really like someone's dream grocery store!
Price is pretty comparable to other grocery stores. I love wegman's!
When I moved to Northern VA after growing up in Central NY, I was worried about where I would do my grocery shopping. Even at home, I knew that we were spoiled with the abundance of Wegmans stores, which blew away the competition back home. Yet when I moved here and realized that Wegmans had made its way down here, I was relieved.
My only gripe with Wegmans is beyond their control, its simply too popular. Unless I can go at 8 pm during the week, the place is packed. People in this area drive the grocery carts like their cars, poorly and with little regard for others, so it can be frustrating. With that said, Wegmans usually keeps the checkouts adequately staffed to handle the crowd.
As Gene W. posted, they carry Upstate NY items like Hoffman hot dogs, Dinosaur BBQ sauces, Sal's Sassy Sauce, and State Fair Speidie marinades which I thought I would have to call my parents to ship down to me. They also carry some other items I cannot find anywhere else.
I think they are better than others on prices for the most part. Their produce is the best out of the major stores as far as selection and freshness. Whenever I go to Giant or Harris Teeter (they are closer to my house) to buy fruit, I curse myself for not just going to Wegmans as I pick through bruised apples and nearly over-ripened bananas.
Prepared foods are great, they make the sushi right in front of you, and the meat/seafood department actually are staffed by people who can advise you on what cut of meat to buy or how to prepare something.
Hopefully when the Leesburg store opens, the crowds will spread out a bit, making both stores a more enjoyable experience. Until then, I just brave the crowd to get what I need and get out.
I can't believe I haven't written a review for this Wegman's!!!!
Anyway, Wegman's is a staple in Central NY and has now penetrated the grocery wars of Washington, DC. It used to be Giant, Safeway, Shoppers Food Warehouse, and Food Lion. Food Lion is gone, replaced by Bloom but also in the mix are Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Harris Teeter. However, Wegman's is causing a stir and why shouldn't they?
Wegman's has competitive or cheaper prices on name branded items and their Wegman's line is cheaper than the generic grocery store brands as well. Not only do they have huge selection of everything, they have region items from PA and NY as well. Can the other store say that? Grilled Stickies from State College, PA and Sal's Sassy Sauce from Rochester/Syracuse, NY.
The store is big, the produce is fresh, the aisle are large, and the lights are bright. The gorgeous deli, bakery, prepared food section is second to none. Like I said, they have everything! Some of the gourmet items might be pricey but the quality is outstanding. From rotisserie chickens to sushi, chinese buffet to subs/pizza/wings. This place has it all.
Leesburg, Fairfax, and now a megasuper Wegman's in Fredericksburg. Wegman's has permanently changed the face of grocery shopping here in the DC forever. And the other stores have already started changing their stores to mirror Wegman's. Not even close.
I highly recommend the experience that is Wegman's! All these positive reviews can't be wrong. :) Happy shopping!
I had been born and raised in Northern Virginia and had never heard of Wegmen's my entire life. Then I visited my sister in Sterling and we stopped by this place. Turns out its a very popular place in the Northeastern states, and has now landed here in Virginia. I was very impressed with how clean the store was and the service at the check out was really nice. They have a good selection of pork and beef products. When I went it seemd fairly crowded. It was on a Saturday afternoon. But I was able to find everything I needed. It still cant compare to Ukrop's !
Conveniently located just down the street from my workplace, my coworkers and I usually come here for lunch. What's great about it is that the coworkers who have brought their own lunch can also join us as the entire upstairs has enough tables and chairs to put our own work cafeteria to shame. They have a great selection of foods to choose from... a Chinese and Indian cuisine buffet, Jumbo Lump Crabcakes, a made to order sandwich station, fresh sushi, and pasta station just to name a few choices.
I remember a 3rd party we worked with from New York swears after visiting our Wegmans that it's the best grocery market he's ever been to and that it's the next best thing to sliced bread. Yeah.... ok, he's either a little too much on the "happy" side or gosh, are the grocery stores in NYC that bad? o_O
Anyways, I don't usually grocery shop here since the Giant or Harris Teeter is closer to my home, but from the looks of things, Wegmans has a wide selection of fruits and vegetables, an aisle of organic foods, and a well stocked bakery section. Oh, and they have these cute signs near their wines labeled "Eating Spaghetti tonight?" and an arrow pointing to a wine recommendation. Yes, I appreciate cute gimmicks like this. :D
Did I just review a grocery store? Why, yes... yes I did. ;)
Having finally ventured to the Wegmans' that started the "craze" here in Virgina, I can't say I was disappointed. Wegmans, has the LARGEST selection of Gluten Free items ANYWHERE and they are currently increasing their available floor space for these items.
I will have to disagree with Collin W in terms of comparing it to Rochester/Western NY area Wegmans. All the Wegmans' outside of it's home base are considered upscale grocery markets. I'm pretty certain some of the characteristic's that are common in the "non-upscale" versions will not be seen in this area. Characteristics like condom's locked behind locked display cases, disheveled/sparse shelves, police presence/incidents, etc. In Rochester and Buffalo (the two areas I'm familiar with), Wegmans' is just a regular grocery store, some of which are open 24-hours. The layout out for all the stores is roughly the same with these large "upscale" ones being based off the "flagship" model they built in Pittsford a few years back.
That being said, Wegmans' is a hell of a lot better IMHO than most of the grocery chains around here. Especially compared to the national chains of Safeway & Giant. Price wise, it really depends on what you're getting and for gluten free stuff their cheaper than Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, & Healthway and have a larger selection than Trader Joe's (pricewise pretty much the same). Some items are cheaper at Giant but for everything else Wegmans's is my stop.
My only beef with this location is the Sushi counter doesn't understand the concept of customization. At the Fairfax location, I can get any roll I want made with brown rice. At this location, only the rolls that stated can be made with brown rice will be made, or the ones stated on board.
This one has free family movies over the summer upstairs from the Cafe. It has a smaller wine section than Fairfax but just as knowledgeable a staff. In addition, all my favorite Western NY items are available :-)
Answer: Perfection
Question: What word best describes Wegmans?
Despite living 20 miles from this Wegmans, or ANY wegmans, I still come often because it is BY FAR the best supermarket. Its not really even close for 2nd place.
I cant think of a time that i spent LESS than an hour in wegmans, its not possible.
Let's take a trip around the store, shall we?
Prepared Foods:
Excellent. Always fresh, always delicious. The Roasted chickens for about 6.99 are a great buy and are super fresh. They last me a few days, and are great for making a bbq pulled chicken salad.
Hot Food Bars/Salad Bars/Asian Bar:
I can say that most times I come to Wegmans, its for lunch/dinner and then shopping. The sushi is fresh and pretty good for supermarket level. The asian bar is also good, but what you might expect from a hot buffet bar.
Sub station:
IF you want a 3 meal sub, get the 14" monster. SO GOOD.
The Cheese Section: Holy crap...so many cheeses.
Olive/Mediterranean Bar: HUGE and extensive, not just olives.
Cold Cuts/Cheeses: A very extensive variety, and the daily specials are usually quite good. I love the wegmans roast beef thinly sliced. Mmm
Produce:
Where I enter the store and proceed to spend 15 minutes looking for all the great veggies and fruits wegmans has to offer. Great selection, always fresh, but if you go on a Sunday, be prepared for lots to be taken.
Meat: Another slam dunk. They have a great selection of prepackaged meats and a meat counter for more specific pieces.
Fish: HUGE counter with dozens of fish and shellfish. They also put the serving size/price for each fish so you can see how much you'll spend for a single/double (or more) serving.
Beer/Wine:
Huge department, with a separate area for the "fancy wines" as i like to call it. The beer is also a big area, divided up by region.
The rest: The rest of wegmans is HUGE and takes some time to make it through. Their own store brands are great, especially the MAC AND CHEESE. Tops the kraft by a lot.
The store area: If you need any kitchen utensils or other more extensive things like pots and pans, wegmans has got you covered.
I have already written too much. DId i say i love wegmans?
High five to the person that created Wegmans. Everything is so beautifully fresh and well presented. I love that there is a little daycare for children. My daughter used to get excited to go here until she turn 8 last month. Now she's too old. Its OK, I still love this place.
All of the employees are so happy and helpful. The meats are tender and so flavorful that its not necessary to put too much marinade on them. Salt and pepper is enough to bring out all of the wonderful flavor and juices. Our fav are the Ribeyes. Oooo and I almost forgot about there delicious and huge deli sandwiches for about $5 bucks. Way better than subway.
Do not buy any name brand items here, get the Wegmans brand for all of your grocery needs. It all taste great and cost less. And speaking of costing less their prices have gone down plenty from what they were before. Even more reason to come shop here. Its well worth a few more cents for the fresh fruit they have here. Nothing is brown dry or too ripe compared to other grocery stores.... hint hint Shoppers.
This is based solely on the cheese section. I find it to be fabulous (not quite as good as being in Europe, nor even my favorite place in Cambridge, MA, but ... )
I am new to the area, and if someone can find a place with better cheese selection, please let me know.
I'm in love with Wegmans. I can get all my organic foods there, very good selection. I moved to VA from AR, so Wegmans is sort of a marvel to me...a place to get all of your healthy food needs.
Having spent my last five years in upstate New York, where Wegmans abounds (Wegmanses abound? Wegmans abound?), I eagerly took the first opportunity upon moving to the area to make the half hour drive to see the closest offering from my favorite store. Would it be different? Had they ventured too far from their base in Rochester? Were they stretching their supply chain too thin? The answer to all of these, garnered from one first look around the store and announced by a sigh of relief, was a resounding no. Thankfully, this was the same old Wegmans that I had grown to know and love.
I'm not going to bore you repeating what they have or saying that it is the best place on Earth, which it is. In fact, what struck me the most was how dissimilar it was from what I was used to. Despite being in a location with a much higher cost of operating a business than my previous locale, their prices are almost exactly the same. I don't know where these people who talk about Wegmans being expensive are used to shopping, a dumpster? I walk into nasty Giant and everything is twice as expensive as this place (although the coating of filth on your food is free). The store layout is the same, with a few minor changes (Wine? In a grocery store? Who ever would have thought? It's almost like this state thinks we are adult human beings living in the 21st century!!). The staff is just as friendly, the crowds just as huge, and the execution of their services just as flawless.
It's an insult to Wegmans to even compare it to any of the other regional chains, and though it may be sacrilege to say so, it throws Whole Foods under the bus as well. It's not that what they are doing is rocket science either. The stores here aren't some special flagship locations targeted at high-tax-bracket Northern Virginians, as some who aren't familiar with the chain or have only lived around here could suspect. Go to any Wegmans in cow town New York and it will be almost exactly the same, right down to the olive bar and organic cosmetics. I don't understand why none of the other local stores seem to understand that maybe if they too stocked a bunch of products that weren't garbage and hired people who could actually communicate with customers, maybe they would be more successful. But no complaints here. I'll gladly keep making the short drive to support my favorite shopping destination.
Just for the subs alone, I gotta give the place 5 stars. A 7 inch sub will set you back 5 bucks and some change. A 14 inch will set you back a little less than 9. Danny's Favorite and the Wegmans Assorted are the way to go. The prepared Asian foods are ok but expensive. Stick with the subs. I've eaten them 5 days in a row and I'm still not sick of them.
Honestly, I don't understand what it is they could possibly be doing different than all the regional grocery stores. The produce is stunningly better at Wegmans than anywhere else I've been within the DC area. The fresh breads baked here are crusty and delicious. The meats sold here, processed or fresh, are all several steps better than the local options. The prices aren't the cheapest, but if you shop for the right items, the quality will be so much better than elsewhere that things will still feel like a bargain. I'll drive here all the way from DC just to pick up fresh peppers, polish sausage, fresh crusty rolls, and Salen's hot dogs.
It's pretty hard to add to the already glowing reviews of this place, but I'll try.
I stop here every time I come into town. In the SF Bay Area we have high end groceries like Draegers and Andronicos, and of course Whole Foods. This place is a cross between all of those. Since I'm only here for meetings, I've never had a chance to try the cheese, but have always wanted to.
I love coming here right from the red-eye into IAD, getting my breakfast of yogurt, fresh fruit, muffin, caffeine fix, a bottle of water for the hotel and then heading out for the days meetings.
The hot lunch/dinner buffet is just ok -- they're tasty and -- if you don't go overboard loading up your Styrofoam plate -- affordable. I've had better luck with their made to order pasta. I also like their sandwiches.
Their wine selection is pretty decent.
In short, a fantastic grocery store.
Wegmans is fresh.
Wegmans is fly.
The food is amazing,
that you cannot deny.
The lobster bisque (special) - AH-MAY-ZING!
The Chicken Tikka - FAH-NOM-IH-NAL!
Shocker it's in Ashburn close to the Ferrari dealership. But just a 15 minute drive from my work, I wonder why I don't come here more often.
Wegmans is one of two grocery stores in the area that sells goose at Christmas. They stock up with the best of everything: meat, fish, fresh breads and desserts, etc. Their celiac, vegetarian/vegan, and organic sections are impressive for a general grocery store.
Produce is expensive, but you get what you pay for. Their cheese department is second to none, and has great fondue sets and cheese kits.
Avoid their international section unless you're pressed for time. All of their items can be found at mom and pops "ethnic" groceries around town for a third of the price.
All the employees who have helped me have been amazing. They know their stuff, are passionate about food, and are probably overqualified for working at a grocery store: a question to an employee stocking soy milk once got me into a fascinating hour-long conversation about life, the universe, and everything.
I work around the corner and this place is by far the best grocery store I've ever been too!
Wegmans felt someone shrunk a Whole Foods and attached it to a standard supermarket.
I would pop in here once a week to pick up food for breakfast and lunch for the 4 days I would be in town, Mostly fruits\vegetables and Odwalla\Clif bars. It was always packed on a Sunday afternoon, but they always had a bunch of checkout lines open, so it wasn't too bad.
Fruit and vegetable selection was pretty good. They had decent Asian pears, tomatoes and pre cut fruits (esp. watermelon). A good selection of Clif bars, but many times their Odwalla stock was gone.I never got anything from the hot bar\salad bar, but it looked decent.
Truth be told, Wegmans is probably a 4 star grocery. I knocked a star of for their stupid reversal of the entrance. Entering on the left is backwards, and it appeared to confuse a lot of people judging by the number of near collisions I saw.
It doesn't get any better than Wegman's. This is the best grocery store in the world. It's really an experience. Good selection of fresh produce, great selection of fresh fish and meats. Once you've shopped at Wegman's, it's difficult to shop anywhere else.
Great lunchtime scene as well.
Best grocery store on the planet. The only thing that would top this is if they gave out tons of samples like Costco... then I'd bring a pillow and move in.
Seafood section is amazing, cheeses, european butter...
and the Chinese hot buffet!!!!
My only complaint is, since this place has the freshest selection of meats, fish, seafood, vegetables, and fruits around, the store is always crowded when I do my weekly shopping! Wegmans, and this location in particular, is not only a grocery store, it is a way of life. This place dwarfs other grocery stores. I have been shopping at this location for 4 years and every time I go, the customer service is outstanding, especially the folks handling wine tastings (love their picks!). The Cookie Shoppe is amazing. I wish I could name everyone who has ever helped me but unfortunately there are too many to count. Everyone is spectacular with their customer service skills. Highly recommend Wegmans in Sterling!
I love Wegman's! Everytime I visit my sister, who lives in the DC area, we always plan to have lunch here before I head back home, but all we've managed to do is have dessert once! How I long to try the soft-shelled crabs and other items to be found all over the store. This place is like Whole Foods! Unlike Whole Foods, Wegmans does not post ingredients lists, which is a huge factor why I haven't sampled much of the food here.
My niece and nephews love looking up and watching the train move along its tracks (next to the dairy aisles).
I love Wegmans.
Just eating the freshly prepared foods or walking around is enough for me.
It can't get any better than Wegmans.
Especially this Wegmans. It's HUGE.
The top level is so relaxing and comfy.
Prices are a little crazy, but oh well.
Love everything here.
Walking out of Wegman's, I wished to have the power to burn down the grocery stores in Chicago by looking at them. Wegman's makes me want to beat the sh*t out of the grocery store managers in Chicago and drive some sense in to them. Is it a bad thing?
This is what a real grocery store looks like. I hate you all who live close to Wegmans. I wish we had the same in Chicago.
Recipe for a happy family gathering during the holidays: take everyone to Wegmans for lunch. There is some thing for everyone's liking. There is something for everyone to eat and buy. The produce is fresh, the meats are excellent, the prepared food section is delicious, and the buffet is fantastic.
There is an awesome dessert section along with artisan breads. There is also a pizza, sandwich, soup, and wings section for those who want variety.
I have been to this Wegmans numerous times and it always makes me hate the grocery stores in Chicago.
In an ideal world all the Jewels and Dominicks in Chicago will be replaced by Wegmans
P.S. Can you sense the jealousy and anger? :-)
Wegman's really is "As good as it gets!"
You know it's good when you feel like you may have missed something great every single time you leave. Whenever I'm in town for business, I absolutely must make a few runs here, whether it's to get a gigantic sandwich that will serve for at least two meals, or just do some shopping for treats I can't find back home in Chicago.
And then I wake up from this dream, and find myself back in Chicago - slave to mediocrity and the Albertsons/Safeway Borg. :-(
Get over they hype, folks. Seriously, it's a nice store, but in reality, it's a freakin' pain to navigate.
The pros- stuff you can't find elsewhere; VERY helpful staff (from the butcher to the cashiers...they are all exceptionally nice and know exactly where most "hard to find" items are located); great kabobs (fish, too)- perfect for summer grilling; prepared sides- too easy not to buy; WINE selection!!
The cons- too busy to make your way through the store during prime hours (go early or late- or fight with parents who tow their 4 children around....they DO have free childcare...); parking lot is weird, and now that Target and the strip mall are open, it's only going to get worse; WAXPOOL...need I say more? Take 28 to get there if you can; limited selection of meat, fish, kabobs, and bread if you go too early in the day (like before 9 AM)
Oh Wegmans, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways! Where to begin? I'll just break the store down from right to left :) Wegmens is like a cross between Whole Foods, Costco and William Sonoma. It's humongous!
On the right you will find their eatery, it has everything from a chinese buffet (not that great - 2 stars for me), a pasta station (solid 3 stars), salad station (3.5 stars), hot prepared foods (haven't tried), soup station (4 stars, loved the italian wedding and tomato basil bisque), sushi station (4 stars), a sub/wings shop (5 stars, huge subs!), pizza shop (2 stars), bakery (5 stars, mm, olive bread, asiago bread, challah bread), patisserie (4 stars, chocolate raspberry torte..yum!). They have a great seafood and meat section. Fresh stuff, massive selection, very knowledgeable staff. The prices can get expensive, but you can find deals if you look. You can sit down and eat your prepared meals upstairs.
As you start moving left you will run into their cheese section, every cheese you can imagine, tons of different fresh mozarella, gruyere, brie, halumi, manchego, goat cheese, you name it, they probably have it and they will let you sample.
Next, my most favorite section of all, a giant Olive bar! They have whole olives, pitted olives, oil cured olives, olives from spain, france, italy, greece, the middle east. This is absolute heaven for me. My favorites being the kalamata and calabrese olives.
Then there is the wide range of wines, again giant selection, quality stuff.
They have a kitchen section, in case you need a Le Creuset dutch oven while you're grocery shopping, they've got it!
Their produce section is full of many organic options at decent prices. They have all sorts of fresh herbs like sage, thyme, marjoram, dill which are harder to find at other grocery stores.
They have a sub section towards the middle full of only organic products, many of the things you would find at a Wholefoods.
The frozen food section is in the middle, followed by seasonals. There is another section of international sundries, it's rather small considering that they cover asia, latin america, europe, india and the middle east in just two rows, but you can find sriracha, wasabi, malta drinks, cans of spotted dick, palak paneer sauces and gefilte fish respectively.
The rest of the the store is more like a typical grocery store.
The sheer selection available to me is what I love about this place.
What do I hate? The traffic! Don't go on weekends or major holidays, you will be there forever! I went over the weekend and they have a whole traffic unit of at least 12 cops directing traffic at various locations.
The store is open 7 days a week until midnight. I found the best times to go are during the week after 8pm. Enjoy!
I love grocery shopping in general, but grocery shopping at Wegmans is what I imagine a grocery store in heaven would be like. They have combined the best of common household products (at reasonable prices), with great produce, wide array of staple food vendors, delicious prepared delights and specialty food section that is not as comprehensive as whole foods but is damn close. I think that the subs are a really good value (5 bucks and they don't taste like dog tongue- sorry subway). The only items that I don't care for in the prepared section is the rotisserie chicken (stay away from this dried out salty mess) and the sushi (I think that the fish quality is fine they just overkill with the rice). The bread and baked goods though are the best that you will find at any other grocery store. They make them fresh throughout the day, so the one you take home won't be 12 hours old and ready for the birds. My favorite section in Wegmans has to be the olive bar/wine/cheese section. This part of the store always draws me in an tempts me. The wines are offered at all price points and the hummus is great for prepared hummus. Oh I nearly forgot about the florist, seasonal merchandise, child care center, photo-center, pharmacy, movies and insane candy isle. Wegmans really does have it all.
Three words: grocery store heaven.
A beautiful place with beautiful products. I feel healthier and fresher just being there. You name the obscure, hard-to-find ingredient featured in an exotic recipe, diet and fitness magazine or health article, and you can find it in Wegman's well stocked aisles. The prepared and ready-to-cook foods are gorgeous, gleaming at you from behind the glass case and inspiring you to plan a gourmet-quality dinner. The endless dine-in or carry-out lunch options will leave your head spinning and mouth watering. I think this is the only grocer I know that can put my beloved Teeter to shame. Well worth the longish drive from Reston to enjoy this overpriced but glorious mecca of food.
I really don't like buy pre-made food from grocery stores...but Wegman's is an exception.
Their pre-made food is always fresh and the people there are soooooooo nice.
They can be a bit pricey though.
This place is ginormous! Wow, you can get everything under the sun. A little like whole foods...in a barn!
You are sure to find at least one item you like in here.
Three and a half stars. Crowded at lunch prime time since it seems to be the go-to spot for the industrial companies around here. My coworker loves getting the asian buffet by the pound, but I was perfectly happy to settle for nigiri sushi and a cream soda. The peking pork from the asian wokery is too sweet, barbeque pork too dry, and the dumplings too bland and greasy. Salt and pepper squid is decent/. Packaged wasabi is pretty standard, but the packaged ginger still weirds me out. And don't let the honey crisp apple fans get started.
Secretly one of my favorite reasons to go visit my parents' house...
Wegmans is a huge wonderland of a grocery experience. Maybe I'm being overly gushy but I am obsessed with grocery shopping. I bet I could get lost in aisles of food for hours!
Best parts!
- All of their bakery items. Fresh and delicious. I feel as if I've stepped into a farmer's market just for baked goods. Loaves, pastries, bagels - all tops.
- Hummus/olive bar. Don't leave without a tub of fresh hummus.
- Eating area upstairs. And all the great stuff to take up there from the food bar.
- Their store-label canned beans and veggies. Fairly cheap, good quality, and healthy.
- Natural foods section. It actually spans several aisles, instead of composing a single tiny aisle tucked away in a corner (as in many other chain groceries). Commendable selection.
Only problem. I'm always getting too much!
This is the best grocery store on the planet! Usually I'm going to several stores to get all the ingredients I need for an international recipe but not with Wegs...they have everything! I even bought sunglasses for $11.99 last night. For the posters that say their stuff is more expensive than other grocery stores - I wonder where they're shopping. I buy name brand everything and its all cheaper than Giant or HT. This is definitely the place to go to for prepared foods, its fresh and correctly spiced.
Best grocery store ever I read the reviews before I moved here 3 mths ago and had to see for myself.
.Parking is tight but thats my only complaint all good grocery stores have traffic.Getting on Pacific / Waxpool from Wegmans is tight most times of the day and a challenge on weekends and Holidays.

This store has some higher end items but higher end items costs more obviously.
On average this store is cheaper in my experience then the Local Giant Safeway Harris Teeter for majority of items you normally buy and worth every dime extra you might spend for quality items and sincere service
Great holiday trays last minute gifts little delicacy and luxury food items should you choose them
Awesome rotesserie chicken w many flavors and even kosher available
great tasting subs, pizza, wings, coffee and gelato.
Friendliest staff ever.
If there's a Super Market Heaven it must be called Wegmans.
I never thought I would praise a Super Market that is enormous in size to such heights but Wegmans is the most amazing Super Market. I didn't think I understood they hype that followed this Rochester, NY based chain but when I tried to come to the opening day to the Dulles store and the line to get into the parking lot was 45 minutes long I had to go back to check it out.
The store is huge and has some of the best deals for wine and cheese. The store brand items in Wegmans are also great quality for the value (100% Whole Wheat Bread no Corn Syrup, Tasty Marinara Sauce for only 99 cents, and great frozen meals). Wegmans won best in Washington for its wine & cheese section and for good reason. The wine selection is vast and has the best selection I've seen for a supermarket. The cheeses are also top quality and served up by knowlegeable staff.
Wegmans offers a shoppers club but the deals aren't as good as those offerred by Giant and Safeway. So you're bill could be higher than normal but the shopping experience/quality of food and produce is worth the extra cash.
If you're hungry the ready prepared food section offers huge subs made to order (a half is really all you need), a good wokery bar, pasta made to order and meals like Salmon BLTs. I've taken home the baby back ribs a couple of times and they were mighty tastey.
The Wegmans out in Dulles is better in my opinion than the one in Fairfax. Just more space and doesn't feel as claustropobic.
Take the drive you won't be disappointed.
Best place to do shopping. I have only 2 complaints:
1. Safeway has more soymilk options (come on Wegmans!! Get fancy with the soymilk too!!)
2. TOO MANY PEOPLE shopping during rush hour!!!!! Holy crap--imagine merging onto 495 at 8:30am on a weekday, this is what it is like shopping during the high-peak hours, my solution--shopping at 9pm!!
Seriously, I love this place even with the above issues!
Dear Wegmans,
I visited your lovely abode in Buffalo, NY on a business trip last fall. I had to run away as soon as possible because I knew that if I stayed wondering your aisles for a moment longer I would walk out with way too many amazing goodies that weren't needed for my trip.
Please, please, please....come to DC! I am without a car, and your VA/MD stores are not super accessible by public transit. :(
Trust me...there are many DC resi's who would love you to bless their lives!
Patiently waiting....
