IS THERE A BETTER GROCERY STORE THAN WEGMANS?

-NO

SInce this place opened a couple years ago people from all over the northern part of MD and southern Penn come here to their grocery shopping.  Its FILLED with everything that you could possibly want.
My favorite part of the store is the bulk candy and other treats that are at your dispense.  Lots of tasty prepared foods for the people on the go, sushi, chicken, chinese food bar, pizza, and subs made to order.
Wegmans has it all.

At first, I wasn't all that impressed with Wegmans. Yes, it's big, but it seemed to lack a lot of variety in things I normally buy.

Then I walked up and down the aisles. Aisles big enough for two carts to pass each other. An entire area of cookware, dishes and kitchen gadgets. A huge bakery. Gelato.

It's got a lot of stuff. Sadly, though, it has a very small Asian food section...although, that said, it's still larger than any in other stores here (besides H-Mart, of course).

Where it's pretty impressive is that section dedicated to take away and prepared meals. Their $7.99 Chinese and Indian food buffet is pretty extensive. And they do okay with sushi as well.

They'll also walk you out to your car if you feel uncomfortable doing so by yourself. I like that. It may come in handy as winter sets in and it gets darker earlier.

Wegman's is amazing!!

Definitely over the top in grocery stores! My parents have a place right up the street from this store so this is their normal store. How lucky they are!!
Tons of greeting cards, amazing cheese section, mouth-watering prepared foods section, expanded sushi area with killer prices, tasty baked goods, natural foods, international foods, it's all here!

My only complaint is the parking, hence minus one star...
I mean, really, do all these people really live in Hunt Valley?
Or does everyone in the Baltimore metro area come here to shop?
Wednesday afternoon at 1 the place is packed!!

Let me tell you. For some reason I love going to supermarkets when I'm in another part of the country. My previous fav was Publix in FL cause of the wall to wall Dolphins swag everywhere.

But Wegman's is a beast. It's huge. It's crowded. But man does it have everything. The prices are not as bad as you think upon first walking in. It's like a Trader Joe's on one side and a Ralph's on the other. The foodies can mingle with Hamburger Helper's. It's harmony and a model for peace.

Well...more like a one stop shop. We made an epic dinner.

My goodness. The roommates and I spent something like 2 hours at Wegman's this afternoon.

I'm now totally drained and much much poorer.. but well worth the shlep.

I almost gave it 3 stars, but only because it's kind of overwhelming. I realized that too many options is not something I can blame them for!

I won't do a things I liked/things I didn't like sections, but I have to say that the food is a little overpriced, but the selection is unbelievable. So much food, and so little time!

Will write an update once I've recovered from the expedition.

I don't know why I don't shop here more often.  I guess I've always had the impression that it's kind of far from downtown Baltimore, but it's really no further up Rt 83 than say Towson Town Center, which I frequent for my retail therapy sessions.

Wegmans is enormous.  Not to mention it is also next to a retail shopping center so you can get your retail therapy fix and grocery shopping done all in one stop!  I could probably spend all day in Wegman's if I wanted to.  There are aisles and aisles of produce.  You're supposed to weigh out and print price labels for your produce prior to checking out, which totally brings back childhood memories of pretending to be a grocery store cashier and making my mom buy all the plastic produce toys that I had.

Aside from all the grocery items, almost half of the store is dedicated to prepared food items.  I've been to Wegmans just to eat lunch.  There are so many kinds of food to try--from sushi and Asian stir fry to pizza and subs.  There's also a wide selection of premarinated meats, which would be great for grilling in the summer time.

Wegmans is like Whole Foods without the expensive prices.  Love it.

I hate grocery shopping but Wegmans is heaven. I absolutely love it. Prices are great (sometimes it's better to penny pinch by looking through ads for certain items to be cheaper say at Walmart or Target- cleaning supplies, foil, etc)
I HATE most store brands like Walmart brand and such but Wegmans brand is absolutely wonderful. I totally trust their brand knowing I am getting the SAME quality and taste as say Oreos or Green Giant corn.

The new carts however SUCK! If you have anger problems or panic attacks...do not go during lunch hours. The carts are massive, the shoppers can be downright nasty so you will be sitting in the corner in the fetal position! lol

I was recently in town for a meeting at the embassy suites across the street. On our first night, someone recommended wegmans for a quick dinner without a wait.

It was such a great place, that we returned another time the next day for lunch as well.

Wegmans is not only a good grocery with some good prices, but it's also a top notch international foods and restaurant. It's divided up in to easy to navigate sections. The food is very fresh (we got cornbread that had just been put out), and is actually of great quality.

I would recommend this not only for shopping, but for a quick stop for lunch or dinner if you're in the area as well. I wish we had one of these in Columbus,, I would be there all the time.

The small chain of Wegmans supermarkets are as I call "A gourmet grocery store" These stores in fact are so big, you could get lost in them! Whether you are looking for kosher, sushi, that homemade bread, or really anything- Wegmans is sure to have it! We used to travel over an hour just to come here! So if you ever want really good food at a really good price, Wegmans is the place to go!

Absolutely one of my favorite places to shop! They have an incredible selection of produce and foods from around the world but also your everyday stuff too, like Tide laundry detergent. Their cheese department is phenomenal and if you have a recipe that calls for a weird ingredient, you'll probably find it at Wegman's.

If you happen to go when you are hungry, you will find a great selection of "on-the-good" foods that you can either eat upstairs in their lounge or outside on the patio.

Be careful when you go because this place is packed on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. If you are going just to wander around, go in the early morning of later in the evening and you'll be able to take everything in.

This is my bi-weekly shopping place.  My husband and I always go on a Saturday or Sunday.  We get something to eat first in the cafe and people watch form above.  Then we shop.  The prices are about the same as most other grocery stores.  It may get busy but I love this place.

All the food I have had in the cafe area has been very good.  Their Asian is very good!

i love wegmans!!!! i used to think that they were a lot more expensive than the typical grocery stores, but they're comparable.

they have SUCH a big selection - stuff that's organic, stuff that's not organic, stuff that you don't see in regular grocery stores, pre-made meals... and everything is really fresh. i love how they have a separate cheese bar and a tea section. there is also a cafe, which has a good variety and good food. if you are feeling like a glutton, stop by their bakery section... yummm....

When it comes to reviewing Wegman's... well words cannot really describe the enormity of the place. I don't think I need to explain what a supermarket is, so let me get to the point. This place is big, really big, and they have a lot of stuff. By stuff I mean food, drinks, flowers, herbs, home products, etc, all the stuff. Their selection is really mind boggling, especially in their unique sections like international. Normally to buy a tomatillo, Goya coconut milk, serano chili, and fabric softener you'd have to drive all over the place. Wegman's has it all in one place so you don't have to search around.

They also have their own brand which is actually pretty good. I normally don't trust generic products but theirs are good, and have clear labeling that I wish the brand name stuff would use.

And then there's the food court area. They have a fairly massive section with things like a deli, sushi, Asian buffet, pizza, cheeses, seafood, and gourmet salads all in a big L shaped ring. There are usually all sorts of free samples for you to try, and when you decide on something, you can go up on the mezzanine and watch the ensuing chaos below while you eat.

Wegman's has a great model that's sure to please every shoppers' needs. Check it out!

Wegmans coming to Maryland is like the second coming of Jesus... and I can't exactly say that the reaction is unwarranted.

The "market" side of the store is pretty fresh and fantastic, although the staff is not always the most helpful around.  The rest of the store is pretty much par for the course, but the freezer section has wood paneling.... oooh.  The natural foods section is quite comprehensive/impressive.

I agree with whoever said not to go on a weekend.  The entire shopping center is a zoo on the weekends and around holidays (which happen to be some of the only times I'm in the area), and you have to be REALLY patient about finding a parking spot.  Or just park far away and walk.  It's good for you.  If I lived in the area, I don't think I would patronize Wegmans as my usual grocery store.  The "Gucci Giant" around the corner is now always virtually empty because of the business Wegmans sucked away from it, and Giant has most of the same stuff, grocery-wise.

Best grocery store ever! Their prices are reasonable and they have everything. Plus....they are open til midnight. This place is literally a mile from my house, so I make runs to it constantly. It will make you hate other grocery stores, but I still make runs to the Super Walmart and Whole Foods. Each place has certain deals that are a must.

This is sort of like Whole Foods, but allegedly less expensive. However, they also have a pretty decent food court, which serves prepared foods such as sushi and sandwiches. I personally wanted a panini, but they don't seem to have that, opting for mostly cold foods (plus pizza).

It seemed to be pretty packed, so most people didn't appear to mind this.

I did notice that they have both a kosher deli and a regular deli - useful for an establishment in Baltimore.

My tuna sandwich was good, if not earth-shattering. I think that it was about $6 for a torpedo roll-style sandwich.

Once you purchase your food, you can sit upstairs at the dining tables. Overall, a pretty good lunch environment, and the selection will make most people happy (except for my turkey of a girlfriend who got just a small cup of pasta salad and was hungry almost immediately afterward).

I am so glad to have happened upon the Wegmans Food Market in Hunt Valley back in 2006.  I am even more glad that one is coming to Columbia.  Shopping there has its perks.  The first time I went, they gave us one big bottle of apple juice from their brand.  Not knowing it was some promotion (they don't always give you a free bottle of juice), I went back.  Kind of naive in retrospect.  Even though I didn't get another bottle of juice, I got hooked on the store.

Wegmans really isn't just any grocery store. The Hunt Valley Wegmans is huge--probably 3 times the size of my neighborhood Safeway (and the Safeway isn't small) and its offerings reminds me of a Wholefoods, Safeway, and a mini food court combined.  If it's a food product you are looking for, Wegmans probably has it (where else can you buy hazelnut milk?) along with people who will do their best to lead you to it (which comes in handy since you could get lost in there); or if it's something from one of their particular stations (produce, ethnic, cheese, etc.), there will be an expert around to tell you about it.  Even if you don't enjoy grocery shopping, you could go to Wegmans and get all of your grocery shopping done in one convenient location.  Did I mention, it's decorated?  Toy trains chug along overhead (you'll see what I mean when you go there), which can probably grab the attention of any little ones you might bring along for at least a minute or so...

According to Matthew Boyle of Fortune Magazine, "each Wegmans store boasts a prodigious, pulchritudinous produce section, bountiful baked goods fresh from the oven, and a deftly displayed collection of some 500 cheeses. You'll also find a bookstore, child play centers, a dry cleaner, video rentals, a photo lab, international newspapers, a florist, a wine shop, a pharmacy, even an $850 espresso maker."  I think what is most fascinating to me is their 500 cheeses.  Another nice thing about Wegmans is that they'll cut most of their cheeses into even smaller pieces if you ask them (although I don't think they will cut the pre-packaged mini disks but you probably want all of that to yourself anyways), or you could ask for a sample (you can sample their bread too).

Their bakery totally rocks!  They have a Rosemary Sea Salt loaf that I can happily munch on as a meal in itself.  Yum yum!

Usually I'm sketched out by Chinese buffets and although I wouldn't go all the way to Wegmans just to eat their Chinese food, even their Chinese isn't bad.

I'll agree that it costs more, but even if you don't decide to buy anything... it's definitely something to look at.

Definitely a little expensive for things, but great for finding random foods or getting ideas.  I like going with my parents (fellow foodies) to just check things out.  We like to eat lunch there---love the Chinese buffet, or the sandwiches--and sit at the very top balcony area to people watch.

I could spend hours in this incredible grocery store. It is not your typical grocery store at all, there are so many varieties of everything from teas to cheeses you've never even heard of. I love going here in the fall because they have incredible apples and Carmel dips. Which I'm sure they have them year round but they just taste better in the fall. It's no more expensive than a giant or Safeway either. Which is great, because I find that Whole Foods is just laughable with it's prices. Wegmans also has an abundance of kitchen stuff, like pots, pans, plates, aprons, really cool glasses and other cool stuff you wouldn't even think about. It's a really fun store and it's HUGE! They also have sushi bars and all kinds of hot deli's and salad and oriental bars. It's pretty awesome.

I love Wegmans maybe not as much as Whole Foods but its pretty close.  This supermarket opened up in 2005 and has been a success ever since.  Its huge, but my favorite thing is the subs.  Its the bread, the soft honey wheat is so delicious.  You have to come and have a freshly made sub...everything good.  They even have an upstairs where you can eat it if you can't wait til you get home.

I have to say that I was impressed by Wegman's.  I went in with a huge group to their lunch area.  They had everything a girl could want - pizza, salad, sandwiches, sushi, deli, the list goes on.  Anyway, I had some pasta from the deli and I was very happy.  They have some nice seating upstairs as well, so that everyone can enjoy their meal.  I didn't go into the rest of the store, but I have heard that it is expansive, gourmet, and reasonably priced.  You can't beat that.

It's like someone plopped a Whole Foods in the middle of a conventional grocery store, which is awesome. Their produce is miles ahead of conventional supermarket produce, and I love their cheese section. Their bakery is awesome, and as people have said, their food court is pretty impressive. I love Wegman's because I could walk around it for hours and be entertained. I feel like a zombie when I come out.

Fantastic upscale grocery store.  Tend to shop mostly from the east side, the other half is like a Giant or Safeway.  The fish counter is outstanding - fresh gulf shrimp, huge cod loins.  Amazing cheese selection, good olives, fresh produce, even handmade chocolates.  I love this store, and it is definitely worth the drive from downtown a couple times/month to indulge in the foodie version of Disneyland.

Wegman's is an extremely nice store. Prices don't seem to be any worse than at Giant or Superfresh, and the selection is a lot better. They have a wide selection of prepared food which I have not tried, but everything that I've gotten from the bakery has been delicious. The staff are also very friendly and helpful. Awesome store, don't go on the weekend!  Crazy crazy with people and the store doesn't have enough room to accomodate the crowds.  Why they put a large area with corn on the cob right by the front entrance, I'll never know all it does it create a giant traffic jam.  Fresh fish is awesome, fresh meat is also incredible.  Produce is good and the natural foods area is excellent.  They can be a bit pricy on  regular staple items, but those you can get anywhere.  Go for the produce, meat and bakery.

When you check out, check your receipt!  I have been over charged on more than one occassion.  The last time...I was charged for 10 watermelons, I bought 1, $40+ refund.

The only negative thing about going to a Wegmans is that you'll never,  be able to shop at Giant or Safeway in quite the same way again, you'll always feel a bit wistful for Wegmans. Shopping at Wegmans is like getting bumped up to first class on an international flight. The bread is absolutely amazing. All the baked goods are to die for. The lunch stuff (from Chinese to chicken dinners) is fantastic, highest quality you can imagine in a buffet. The cheese selection is outstanding and the cheeses are really well packaged and stored (occasionally at WholeFoods in Silver Spring you get it home, unwrap the plastic and it's crumbly where it shouldn't be if its a cheddar). The produce section ~ delicious baby veggies. Excellent organic section. I could go on and on, and when there's one in Columbia, I know I'll go in and in. Oh happy, happy day when Wegmans decided to come here, on the site of the warehouse that used to be where The Wire was filmed, on McGaw Road). Wegman's hurry up, we love you! Agree with the other reviewers, if you can avoid the weekends, do so. On the other hand, the zoo that's Weggies on a Sat afternoon is generally a happy one.
