I came here with a friend at 12:30 am on my 21st birthday. The place was pretty quiet.. it was a Sunday night. Alex, the owner, made that night one to remember. He created a new whiskey cocktail on the spot to commemorate the occasion. It was damn good. He garnished it with these tasty bourbon? soaked cherries they make there. He's thinking of a name for the drink now, I'll get back to you when he's got it. Other than that, the drink menu is pretty traditional, and Alex knows his stuff. Ambiance is definitely on point.. it's very clean and well-lit.. music choice is good.. Cameras everywhere and Weegee prints all over the walls.. old school photobooth.. shuffle board too.. back porch looks promising for warmer weather.
For you naysayers, take your pomp and circumstance elsewhere. Weegee's keeps it real.
At the end of the night, he poured whiskey shots on the house and invited us to smoke cigarettes at the bar.
I will never forget this commencement of my legal drinking career.
Bottom line, you must go out of your way for a drink at Weegee's.
Great is the place that overcomes a heinous cloud of the strongest stench to win my heart. Like the musk of the Kraken in full rut, we tangled with this odious funk on Saturday night while sipping fine cocktails in celebration of my girlfriend's birthday.
A bona fide olfactory flop, Weegee's hits on every other mark to make for a primo bar experience. Our bartender--he goes by the handle Skinny Rabbit--made it a habit of calling me "brother," and expertly crafted several outstanding drinks. Be it a Brandy Alexander, Sloe Gin Fizz, or Old Fashioned, each drink was a delight. Yet I would advise you to steer clear of the Amanda's Tears: The drink is as tasty as the name is uplifting.
Are the cocktails pricey? Guilty as charged, but it's hard to find a place that specializes in making regular cocktails. Leave the fruity, blended nonsense to lesser bars, Weegee's is going to give you the genuine article so shell out a couple extra greenbacks and enjoy.
If cocktails just don't get you fired up, take on some of their awesome beer selection. My suggestion? Try the private, home brew that they feature. On Saturday we sampled a triple Belgian brewed by an anonymous Chicagoan. It is nice to see a bar give a home brewer a forum to showcase their talent.
Aside from the elephant flatus in the room, the ambiance is top tier. Weegee's has shuffleboard, plays some nice tunes (Chet Baker with Strings on Saturday), boasts a photo booth, and has many of Weegee's crime scene photos hanging on the walls. It's a cozy, friendly, old timey joint, and if you don't mind traveling all the way out to the 60647, you might just have yourself a dandy time.
I was in search of trying a new bar in my neighborhood and stumbled upon Weegee's after reading reviews. I had to give it a try since it was within walking distance from my house. I was nothing but happy with the atmosphere, the drink selection, the bartenders, the shuffle board, and the outdoor patio area.
The bar itself reminds me of an old fashion gentleman's bar. There is a feeling of sophistication with some new age funk.
I can't wait to visit again and expose some of my friends to the hidden gem!!
...and one more thing: to those who bitch about prices; they fill your martini glass to the brim (and then some) for $12 or so. This is the equivalent of TWO cocktails. So two $6 martinis is an absolute bargain. Bonus? No shitty liquor - yay!

shuffleboard, fancy beer, dim lights, italian opera, casual scene.
what else do you need to know?
Weegees is a hidden gem. Good drinks, friendly servers and no freakn flat screen TVs!
Coming from a place known for its bars, Weegee's is my new favorite bar. Ever. Period. Comma questionmark? No, I'll save that for later...
Scratch my cocktail itch I did! Gin Rickey for me and an Old Fashioned for him. While I know my beers I am rather wet behind the ears to cocktails but he gave it the seal of approval. I enjoyed the freshness of the juniper and lemon of mine; after the sip I had of his I think it would have to grow on me.
Sat outside on the patio; we slowly sipped and enjoyed the night air as well as each others company and conversation. Definitely a great place to carry on those kinds of conversations that are best had over a cocktail in the open air.
He said he is going to 'put it on the list.' That means 5 stars in his book.

it's a nice hidden little gem. The unpretentious vibe is what makes it cool. Although this is not your typical neighborhood bar when comes to the libations. The cocktail menu is worthy of any high-end uber chic place.
I tried the Claret Sour and loved it! I also played shuffle board for the first-time.
It's a great place to grab a good drink with your friends to just chill & enjoy the company...no loud TVs or obnoxious frat boys (and girls). It's good peeps. Definitely going back to test out other choices on the cocktail menu.
The inside: Dark, warm, inviting, overall great space. Pretty empty on a weeknight but expected that. Love the big windows, shuffleboard, old lamps, photobooth, clean bathrooms. Drinks are $$ but can't beat the selection. Friendly bartender, decent recommendations. He suggested I try the Capital blonde doppelbock after my Allagash White. While I didn't care that much for the doppelbock I did discover a new brewery worth further investigation. Note to self- buy a Capital Brewery sampler.
The outside: Weegees is in the middle of a sketchy part of W. Armitage. Think flashing blue cameras visible out the window. I rode my bike and was constantly checking to make sure it was still locked up outside where I left it. I did see a bike inside the bar (the owners?). On the plus side, they have a patio!
Worth the trek to the West side? Absolutely.
Weeeeeeeee geeeeeeez!
First of all, I like that when we walked in, there was great oldies playing on the stereo, I'm not talking about 1950s or 60s, think more 1930s and 40s, back to the time when men used to serenade women in order to woo them (or was that just in the movies). In any case, I loved the slow jazz walking into this bar and the elegance of the bartender.
He kindly asked if we'd ever been here and we said no. He took us through the drink menu pointing out cocktails and beer. Their beer list was amazing. We asked what the more popular cocktails were and he gave us a few suggestions. I ended up ordering the "Albertin"... I really dont remember the name but I do remember that it was very strong and it took me forever to drink it. Also poured in a huge martini glass. The taste was good but definitely strong! After that drink I ordered a beer non-domestic which I love!
Atmosphere was good, there were not a lot of people here on a Tuesday night (about 6) but everyone seemed nice and laid-back. Our bartender was so good, he made lemon drop shots for everyone at the bar free of charge and they were strong as well. Yum.
Did I mention they have a photo booth? Oh yeah, the pics come out in black and white although good luck trying to get two people in the same picture, we tried twice and we still couldnt get it right. We might be a bit on the 'special' side.
If it wasn't in such a questionable area, I'd come more often. We saw a hit and run while here. A car turned onto a side street and hit two parked cars, then drove away. Buzzkill! Well not really, we assessed the situation and kept the liquor coming. Never really found out what happened with that parked car....

This is Weegee's and this is why it is fun. I rarely get over to this side of town, but Weegee's is worth it. A great lil neighborhood bar with tons of flavor. Soft lighting, mellow crowd, corner location, great beer selections and a fancy dressed bar staff.
Go Here...
I am such a picky, miserable, cantankerous, judgmental bitch when it comes to bars that I rarely hand out 5 stars. It's safe to say, then, that Weegee's has fully earned it.
It's been around forever and the space itself is absolutely lovely, as is the patio out back. The staff is ridonka friendly and the bartenders are fabulous. Drinks are reasonably priced (hellooooo $6 fancy cocktails, thank you!) and well mixed. Nice clientele, a photobooth, and no in your face televisions. Hooray! A great place to have a leisurely drink on your own with a book or to hang out with a group of friends, it's that kind of a joint.
What elevates it to a 5 star, for me, however, is that I recently (drunkenly) fell over, injured myself and broke a glass and they made sure that Jeff and I got home safely. Not my finest hour, I totally humiliated myself and they were silly nice about it. Wow. I mean, really, wow! Thanks, Weegee's, I'm really sorry about that glass!
Weegee's is a classic, I honestly can't say enough nice things about it.
I think maybe I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't get the appeal of this place.
I'll admit, it's cute and has a really cozy feeling to it but other than that, why would I trek all the way here to pay way too much for drinks and be treated like absolute crap?
One Manhattan was 12 dollars. Twelve. I haven't paid that much for a Manhattan since I moved from, you guessed it, Manhattan. On top of it, the bartender was rude and stuck up. I've never felt less welcome in a bar, seriously, and I've been to some stupid bars.
This place only gets two stars because I really liked their patio and because some people I love think it is great, which makes me think it has to have SOME kind of appeal. I have a long list of bars that I I can't wait to go back to and Weegee's is not on that list. Perhaps I will try it again, but most likely I won't.
Sorry Weegee's, you can't win them all.. even when they're like and usually easy to please.
I love weegee's. Smart bartenders, outdoor seating, excellent music choices.
Just, um, don't tell too many people about it, because then people I won't like will go there and douche it up. This is between you and me, okay?
okay?
love this place.. the only thing that upset me was that i didn't know it existed before this weekend. The drinks = Great! one of the best manhattan's i've had (brandy-infused cherries, mmmmm), and totally reasonable prices.
Talked to the owner and one of the bartenders on Friday and both were really friendly... Drinks were served fast and the locals were all pleasant.
While this may seem harsh, I post my first 1-star review without hesitation. Picture this... Sunday night, NO ONE in the entire place... I roll in with my husband and 6 friends... The owner was seated at a table working on his laptop when we arrive. One might believe that he would be happy to see 7 people walk in with bulging wallets and a pleasant, jovial demeanor. Instead, we were subjected to his condescension and unwelcoming attitude. One of our friends requested a Miller Lt or Bud, and in a very haughty manner, we were informed that he "didn't carry such products." Another friend asked for a Bacardi and again, he said that he would not carry it (which as a business owner is totally his prerogative, and I'm a-okay with that). However, he did not offer any suggestions as to substitute rums, and when I inquired as to whether or not they had Montecristo rum, he snottily chided that he wouldn't carry a "well" rum such as that (mind you... Montecristo is by NO means a low-budget rum, and is in fact a somewhat pricey pure cane sugar rum, which is COMPLETELY beside the point, b/c this man should not have been subjecting us to his personal commentary on our alcohol selections).
So, we stayed for 1 round of drinks, and decided that we didn't need to be in the unpleasant company of this man. I returned the shuffle board equipment, in exchange for my driver's license, and in a very pleasant and respectful manner, I said to the guy that we would have been happy to stay longer and spend more money, but he didn't exactly seem as though he wanted us there. He informed me that b/c we requested liquor selections that they didn't provide, and also b/c a friend asked whether they had a jukebox, he felt that it wasn't the right bar for us. Pardon? He informed me that the bar was better suited to people after a date. Seriously? There are NO people in the place, and he's concerned that we don't have the right "vibe" for his establishment. Ridiculous! I point-blank asked the guy, "would you prefer that we never visit your establishment again?", and he basically told me that he never wanted to host us again. Now, literally, we ordered a $24 round, on which I tipped him $7. We were respectful, pleasant, and by NO means obnoxious drunks or in any way unsavory clientele. This man is a business owner, and should realize that the success of his establishment resides in the strength of his customer base. We live in the neighborhood, and would be happy to support the local bar, if there was even a decent attitude to the place. (As a side note, this was my second experience in the bar, and on my first trip, the bartender was so busy chatting about himself that it was a damned near impossibility to acquire a beverage).
Bottom line, we ended up relocating to a much more pleasant establishment where we easily dropped a couple hundred bucks. Not sure why this guy was such a judgmental snot who was above taking our money and treating us with respect. I will N-E-V-E-R step foot in the place again, and it pains me to think that anyone would spend their hard-earned money in this bar. I believe in supporting hard-working people, and feel that this business owner does not cater to his customers and has zero concept of hospitality, and therefore does not deserve my business. I would strongly encourage you to spend your money elsewhere.
Weegee's is laid back class, in the kind of quietly sighed "yesssssssss" sort of way. Very interesting cocktails (albeit very strong), friendly bar tender (really, he seems cranky at first but he's fine when you get him going), a resident cat, a shuffleboard, and a stinky B&W photo booth that the cat pisses in. The lights are dim, the music always seems appropriate.
I'd give it 5 stars but my boyfriend had a bunch of cash stolen from him while he was there, which made us feel a little sour about how relaxed and happy we had been there.
I really, really like Weegee's and think that the bar itself, and the owner are great for the community. My boyfriend and I stop in usually about once a week and always enjoy the place. The beer list is phenomenal, and though some drinks might seem expensive, there are alot of great beers priced at around or under 6 bucks. Capital blonde doppelbock. Yum. some fantastic English cider. . Anyways, they also host a bunch of cool events where they give profits from the bar to local schools or charities. And you're free to bring in food from Fast Food place down the street. Love this place . .
The traffic subsides, the store-front signage is in a language other that english, and the barren streets make you second guess your innate directional abilities.
And then you see that pretty little corner where Weegee's sits. If you are a craft cocktail slut, like I am - then you will love this little corner as much as me.
Its far enough away, so it keeps out the "effen black cherry and diet soda" ordering anorexic hussies. And instead beckons only the people that will truly appreciate this wonderful joint.
And even better - there is a photobooth to document all of this appreciation.
So go, drink, and love
This is a gem in the lesser known part of town.
What bugs me is that some folks feel a bit protective about this place....like folks from Uptown or Lakeview are really not good enough....or bad...depending upon how you look at it to patronize this place.........wha evr?!?!
The bar is classic....and looks as if little has changed when it was first constructed (the bar that is...). Small, but with enough seating to have the place come alive late into the evening, this little gem is tucked away on Armitage deep in the Logan Square area.
For my visit, I took a friend who lives in Logan Square, but has NEVER been there......a common theme I'm finding among many people in this city, but I digress.
Good and laid back atmosphere, old school shuffleboard game, nice beer selection, and a photobooth to honor the famous photographer this bar is named after.
A place deep in the city and one you should try when you want to get a bit off the beaten path.
Ok... I have a few friends that love the bar and actually are little mad at me for posting the prior review. They know the owner and tell me he is a good guy and that I must have just caught him on three very bad days. I'm posting this addendum out of respect for them.
Maybe I look like someone he knows and hates or maybe on my first visit I did something to irritate him. My experience was what I described but I have friends who think I'm wrong about the bar.

I can't say enough about this place. I hosted my birthday here a couple weeks ago and the bartender was very calm and patient with us. The atmosphere is great. The drinks are great and the bartenders know what they're doing. You can get an awesome fancy drink for a little more money or you can get a cheap PBR. I love when bars still offer a cheap alternative. If I lived closer you better believe I would go there more often.
This little gem is worth going out of the way to got to! The beer list is top notch and it's nice to go to a bar on a weekend night, and not be packed in like sardines! They have an old black and white photo booth to take pics with, which is fun! The decor of the bar is fitting of the theme with Wee Gee, the name sake.
All in all the the vibe is very laid back and comfortable, and the staff have been great every time I have come in.
It's nice to have such a top notch bar in Logan square!
This place is ADORABLE! It has such a nice old-school feel, dim lighting, and yummy drinks. Even the bartender is dressed up. Everything is just so vintagey looking, down to the phone and cash register. The only downfall was that the crowd that was there the night I was didn't really respect the awesome feel of the bar and acted like they were at any other bar in Wrigleyville. :(
I fell in love at Weegee's.
Sit back kids, I'll tell you a first date story. It was a hot summer day, and my date and I had spent the last hour sitting on his porch, sipping beer, and talking about art and our neighborhood. When I mentioned that I'd never been to Weegee's, he immediately suggested we walk over. As we're crossing Armitage at Lawndale, I'm engaging my companion's attention, watching him melt like warm Nutella as I bat my lashes, when suddenly my right leg sinks into the asphalt through an open manhole. WTF?! Way to throw off my game. Concerned, my date helps me up and we walk into the bar. I hobble to the bathroom, clean off my leg, step back to bar and order a PBR like nothing happened.
And that's how it started...
Oh yeah, the bar. Weegee's appropriately captures the ambiance of its namesake photographer's artwork. There's a sense of romanticism and simplicity in the dim lighting, black and white photographs scattered throughout the bar, and jazz playing softly over the speakers. It's really quite perfect for intimate conversation. Or, you can sit underneath the stars on the back patio. (FYI - Weegee's is far enough west to keep it free of the Logan Bar and Grill riff-raff.) The photo booth in the back appropriately captures the memories you make here. The beer selection is nice too, ranging from Pabst to smaller Midwest microbreweries. I've only heard about the old-fashioneds they mix here, but I'll be sure to given them a try. I do love a good Sidecar.
Oh, and watch out for that open manhole on Armitage and Lawndale...unless you're ready to fall. I was.
Just went for the first time last night -- on a Saturday. The place is very nice and quite a gem for its location. I tend to enjoy bars that are good for conversation and Weegee's was definitely that as it was not too busy and the music was not very loud.
The bartender/owner, however, was a prick. He welcomed us with the enthusiasm of an airport McDonald's order taker. He seemed very uninterested that we were about to spend money at his establishment. He was very short when explaining that every draft beer on the menu was wrong as they were being switched out for some new seasonal brews. Most people would be a little apologetic but he acted annoyed when he had to repeat his quickly spewed out list of new selections. And don't even think about ordering Jack Daniels unless you want some major attitude.
There were little things too like hording all the drink menus behind the bar instead of on the bar so you have to ask for one instead of just grabbing one. And for a place with what I suspect is more than 100 drinks looking at the list is crucial. Since he was the only person working I had to wait a few minutes o get his attention.
Despite all that, I'll definitely give it another chance but mainly because there are so few options in Logan Square. I hope the owner gets his attitude in check because it isn't becoming and won't help his business.
So... this place is sort of my jam. It's a little out of the way, but it's sort of an oasis. Dim lighting, a shuffleboard table, mellow old jazz records, black-and-white photographs of 1930's crime scenes (taken by the bar's namesake) on the walls. The drinks are delicious. I recommend the classic creamy drinks, which I think they do a particularly good job on-- the Brandy Alexander, the Grasshopper, and a few others. Their beer selection is quite nice and they have a nice range of delicious things on tap.
Also, though we're entering a period of time in which this is not totally relevant, their patio is expansive and delightful.
5-star things:
- Location, keeps the Jack and coke crowd away
- Drinks, real drinks, not let's-get-sh!tfaced-and-feel-like-crap-for-Sunday- brunch beverages
- Atmosphere, I foresee the blue gray walls being copied by lame Lincoln Park or Wicker Bar bar, coming to a location near you
- Photo booth, cap off a night with your lady friend with a picture
- Shuffleboard, with coin vending ripped out, see how poorly you can miscalculate your aim and strength
4-star thing:
- Patio, my right nipple froze and fell off while smoking in 15 degree coldness. I'll bring the wood, get a kettle out there
1-star thing:
- bathroom, guys seriously, what's with the aim? stinks like, well, sh!t. get an air freshener.
I know I say this ALL the time...but this is my new favorite bar! Awesome and friendly bartenders. Great beer selection. A smoking area out back....I heart you weegees!
We need more bars like Weegee's.
The cocktails are outstanding. They make a mean Manhattan and Old Fashioned, but you may need to take out a loan to buy one.
They have a shuffle board table which is hours of fun.
There is no television, which is great. It can be distracting for the TV to be omnipresent while trying to have a conversation at a bar. There are many other options that have a 109 inch plasma, flat screen TV with some idiot yelling about football.
The music is usually soft and in the jazz realm.
I would give this place five stars if I could afford to drink here more often but the outstanding drinks come at price. Definitely worth the trip to wherever the hell that it is.
For a bourbon/rye lover, this place is a little slice of heaven. A couple of weeks ago, I had a rye old fashioned here and was blown away by the technique. It was a superb drink. The manhattans are good, too. Lately I've been adhering strictly to the phrase "Bourbon is for sipping, rye is for mixing" so I only drink cocktails when rye is around.
But, if you like your whisky cocktails a little sweeter, there is also a good bourbon selection, including my favorite, Woodford Reserve. Which is always available for sipping, of course, and fine sipping it is.
And of course they have a great selection of microbrews, superb gin/vodka cocktails, comfy barstools, and a 40's/50s jazz/rat pack musical vibe without any of the ratpack obnoxiousness.
Its a shame that Chicago passed the no-smoking ban, because a cigarette or cigar is a manhattan's best friend. Fortunately, there is a rustic patio in back if you are boozing it up in the warmer months.
As others have mentioned below, the only negative is that the location is not reflected in the prices -- they could stand to be a buck or two cheaper per drink, even with the top shelf liquor. For example, while they do have 22 year old Rittenhouse Rye at $10, you get barely a finger of booze for the serving. Show some love!
Eh, I probably wont go back.
I did enjoy the shuffleboard though
Didnt know of the alcohol snobbery before I went. Asked for a Capt and diet, and then jack and diet. Asked why they didnt have either. As he rocked back and forth he explained to me he didnt want mass produced and marketed liquors in his place. Pretty much telling me I have shit taste in the drinks I order.
Dont get me wrong, I dont think otherwise, just really snobby of someone to say to a new customer.
The girls and gays I hang out with all have shitty taste and like our mass produced stuff. I do know guys that like to discuss alcohol and swizzle it around. Kudos to them, but not me.
Also its in a super bad area, nothing else really around, and considering the location they are kind of pricey. $10 and $12 martini's.
Weegee's is an easy place to miss but if you don't pass it up and are able to make it in you are in for a fine treat. They have an outstanding beer selection and almost an even better selection of cocktails. Go with a sidecar, or an Old Fashioned, or why not go all the way and get a 12 dollar Manhattan. Now 12 dollars for a Manhattan may seem a bit steep but it's a damn fine drink. This isn't a place to be drinking a $5 MGD, spend the money on a good beer or a cocktail, you will enjoy yourself a lot more. Weegee's also has free shuffleboard. The shuffleboard is a very tricky table but makes for a really good game. All around I really liked this bar and I have to give Jonathan A, a big thanks for recommending it. I am going to have to go back in the summer and check out the patio.
First off I want all you candy assed hippster/yuppie/fashionista/chad/trixxxie/dude-bro morons to quit with the little girl whining about either the 'hood or the attitude and step back and let a brother throw a little bit of knowledge down at your feet lest you continue down the path of the sissy.
For one thing the 'hood this joint's in is simply not that bad compared to a lot of other parts of the city. Is it the best 'hood round these parts? Nope, not even a little but it is, for the most part, safe; I don't worry about my GF walking to or from it at night. While it could be, and thrive even more, in a better area places like this ARE THE REASON A NEIGHBORHOOD IMPROVES! Instead of crying that you saw a crack dealer and crying that the owner choose an area less antiseptic then you prefer how about you come down and participate in gentrification, not just live in the hip area guys like the owner of Weegee's helped to make acceptable to you? 10-15 years ago Wicker Park was as bad, or worse then this area and people like the owner of Weegee's are what helped turn it around and then ended up priced out of the very area they saved. For the record the owner lives in the area and is very active in CAPs; he's trying to make Chicago a better place, are you?
As for the attitude I occasionally drink cheap, yellow fizzy beer and not once have I ever received the slightest bit of attitude about it here. I will agree that you will not receive the warmest welcome known to man and the owner is not what I would call chatty but I have always been treated and served well in this establishment. Truth be told I prefer not having a unconvincingly friendly member of the bar staff assault me with mock joy when I enter a place; I go to bars to drink, not to feel loved.
The drinks are not cheap and there is not much in the way of low priced hootch here but I would not say that for the given quality of the booze and beers the prices are out of whack. Some of the mixed drinks are pretty pricey and I am mostly a straight brown liquor kinda guy so I can not tell you first hand if they rate the dough but everyone I know that has a cocktail there loves it and they make them with skill and care.
I can, on the other hand, vouch first hand that the 12 dollar Manhattan is worth every penny, based on alcohol alone never mind the taste; I just wish they wouldn't serve it in a Martini glass...
Makes me feel like a sissy.
This bar is brought to you by the "Logan Square Diamond in the Rough" bar club......anyways as my sarcasm may suggest. Logan Square has been having great little places popping up that may seem out of place, but still serve up some mean drinks/food! Weegees is no different! We decided to stop in last night as an old friend of me and my old roommate was in town before heading to Spain for 8months. Anyways, we walk down Armitage passing "Non-descript Liquor Store #1, 7, and 12" and "Check Cashing Place 1,2, and 5.7", only to arrive at Weegee's. A great professional sign out front makes you know that when a bar/business has a name other than a description of what it sells (i.e. LIQUOR), its gotta be good!
Well it was, we got there around 9:30pm and it was pretty dead, over the next couple hours two other groups streamed in, but overall Mexican Independence day celebrations was apparently making it a slow night. This place has a great ambiance. Dark walls, photographs from the 20's & 30's photographer named Weegee (wonder how the bar got its name....), a shuffleboard, and the coolest wooden refrigerator that they keep the beer in (Not to mention the Connect Four game i was eyeing in a pile of board games). Mike the bartender was there with the owner (turned out it was his first night), they served up some expertly mixed cocktails and had a HUGE BEER list with beer from all over the world.
Overall I highly recommend this place, its not very old, but start going there now.....Streetside Cafe folk will be wandering down soon once they realize its there. Be one of the cool kids and be a regular there before they arrive!
wonderful wonderful bar with really good energy.
intense shuffleboard matches
could be
okay even in winter on the patio
when
many strangers gather together
outside for a smoke
and laugh.
Is it the somewhat spooky yet faux-nostalgic feeling from the crime photographer who had an intuition for BLOOD LOSS beyond that of any cop, detective, or sheriff?
Or just the friendly folk more than happy to mingle?
It could even be the striking roman-prairie-colonial style giant windows.
but prolly just the drinks!!
:D
When someone told me there was a bar right by me with a shuffleboard table, I had to check it out. For some reason, due to circumstances or whatever, it took me about a year before I finally made my way here. Not a minute too soon. A cool place. It's off the beaten path a bit, and I ended up coming on a quiet Wednesday night. Nevertheless, there were about 10-15 people in the bar. It's a pretty classy place, and the crowd seemed pretty respectful and unpretentious. I'd say most people were in their upper 20s and 30s. It's low light, low key kinda place. The beer menu is pretty extensive to me. But the cocktail/shots are the specialty, so I hears. I just had a couple 3 Floyds Gumballs and vowed to come back to play some shuffleboard.
One minor letdown: no mint juleps. Otherwise 5 stars.
I got hammered on Boilermakers at this place and every time the bartender made one, he would nod stoically then politely remind me of all the real drinks on their menu - drinks that would get me loaded but not taste like shit. What a classy gentleman. He alone gives the establishment 5 stars for trying to minimize my hangover (e.g., "You sure you want ANOTHER one of these? Your morning might be...difficult").
The only real memory I have otherwise is of the whole 1950s motif, which I liked. It gives the place a playtime or pretend feel. Like being on a movie set, or maybe at a goth bar, absent the fishnet and bad taste.
Anyway, I went with Eric. One of his friends, an asshole who wore his bangs in his face like Glenn Danzig, made some wiseacre comments about my choice of drink and my happy, non-scenester demeanor. The guy seemed genuinely offended that I was having...gasp...a good time.
Eric really runs around with dickheads these days, but even they couldn't wreck my night. Great bar.
I often wish to myself that I could view life from the lens of Christopher Doyle and Wong Kar-wai: dark ambiance contrasting wistful plumes of smoke, Nat King Cole crooning softly in the background, and Maggie Cheung in a slow motion swagger. If any bar could accomplish that kind of mise en scene, it's Weegee's.
With a selection of classic cocktails and an appropriately tasteful beer nerd menu, Weegee's offers dynamic drink choices and the perfect set-up to simply shoot the shit with friends. It's not a bar for dancing, nor is it a character-filled meat market. It's casual, classy, and made for conversation.
