I'm another Lindy Hopper that's been going to WNH for almost two years and it is one of my favorite places to go!

First off, I think most Lindy places in the bay area are awesome, but the thing that differentiates WNH is its friendly family-like atmosphere. I'm sorry that the previous reviewer Mandy felt ostracized--if we seem "clicky", we're actually very happy to talk to (and dance with) new people of any level. WNH brings a community of people that share the passion of dancing.

Here's the current schedule for WNH:
    7:15 intermediate class
    8:15 beginner class
9:15 social dancing begins (all levels), band plays once a month

IMO, the instructors range from good to awesome. I actually like how they rotate teachers from month to month because teachers have different styles of dancing and different styles of teaching. So it's a good way to expose yourself to a variety of styles and help develop your own flavor. I'm unsure why Mandel thinks this is a downfall; many other venues do the same thing (e.g., 920 special, rent party).

Took advantage of the 24 y/o and below discount and signed up for this class (and got my friend Hannah to sign up too!).

Began with the Lindy... and honestly I feel like the class goes by pretty slowly.  I do know a little east coast swing, and I'm by no means great, but it does get a little slow...  I wish the instructors would share less jokes and more instruction.

Also, you meet quite the assortment of people, and if anything, you're never at loss for a dance partner!

My first time there, I stuck around for the dance party afterwards and they had the CALIFORNIA HONEYDROPS (which are an awesome bad btw).  Second time, they DJing was fun AND they offered a free 15-minute shim sham shimmy lesson.

Basically a warm group of people, fun.  I feel pretty awkward and sucky at the actual dancing, but as per my friend A's suggestion (who I also saw here taking an intermediate class!), since everyone used to be a beginner, I'm just going to go all out.

Gotta say though, some people on the floor *are* kind of weird.... but you know.. it's only one song. Haha.

I've been going to Wednesday Night Hop (WNH) since they first opened their doors. Since then, they have been constantly trying to improve and expand. Though they are a for-profit business, the venue exists for the primary purpose of providing a great place to swing dance in the South Bay. WNH offers classes for all levels of dancer, and no partner is necessary to learn. Immediately after class there is social dancing until about midnight. This is one of the friendliest, welcoming venues around. Advanced dancers and instructors will often social dance with beginners. Even if people seem unapproachable, they will almost always graciously accept a dance.

The music is deejayed on most nights, with a live band once a month. The admission price for band nights cannot be beat for live music. The bands and DJs both rotate for a variety of music to accommodate different tastes. The dance instructors also rotate every month, allowing students to get a broad range of view-points on the same material.

Even though South Bay has a large population, the dance scene is not quite as developed as that of San Fransisco. SF dances pull more people from around the Bay Area.

The dance floor is new and can be doubled in size to accommodate for large turn-outs and band nights. The acoustics are typically good, which is important for a dance. Special events are quite common, which can be fun if you enjoy the social aspect, or can take time away from dancing if you are a hard-core dancer.

Light snacks are provided at every dance, and there is lots of seating off of the dance floor for socializing or changing shoes.

All-in-all, WNH is an excellent dance for South Bay residents, and even worth a drive from SF on band nights.

If you have ever wanted to try Lindy Hop, this is the place to try.

WNH works out of the Cheryl Burke Dance studio in Mountain View, the studio amenities are good. Parking is easy and the studio in conveniently located. They also have a variety of ballroom classes and such.

I started back in January '10 and it took me about 3 months to really "get" how to dance Lindy. I had never taken a dance lesson before I started. All I have to say is that I'm HOOKED! What surprised me are the friends that I have made. I know that sounds corny but it is true.

Live bands are fun as the whole floor is opened up and there is more room to dance without running into people. There are different instructors each month but I find that interesting to see different teaching styles and ways of learning.

Update (28 Jan 2008): Wednesday Night Hop! reopens on Wednesday, 6 February 2008, at The Club inside Starlite in Sunnyvale.  From the reopening announcement: "Class schedule has changed slightly -- our Intermediate level lessons will begin at 7:00pm and our Beginner lesson starts at 8:00pm. Like before, though, our dance party will start at 9:00pm and will run 'til midnight!"

Update (9 Jan 2008): Due to closure of Steppin' Out's location and last minute notice to the Wednesday Night Hop! team, Wednesday Night Hop! is closed until they find a new location.  I'll update the business info when a new location is found.  You can also sign up to their mailing list for updates.

This is one of my favorite dance nights.  Lindy hop swing dancing at Steppin' Out on Wednesday nights started by Trevor and Megan and now hosted by Donia Bencke.  The website has details about the classes, when bands are playing, etc.  Bands typically play the first Wednesday of each month.  Lots of good music for swing dancing.  A friendly crowd.  This and Swing Central on Tuesdays are the two main lindy hop swing nights in the South Bay.  There are a number of us who attend both dances.

As I mentioned in my Steppin' Out review, the dance floor is spacious with comfortable areas to hang out off the dance floor.  The classes are great.  Light snacks are always provided.  Give yourself some time to find the place on your first visit.  It's easy to miss, hidden in a large industrial building.  Down and across the street a tiny bit from Planet Granite away from Wolfe.

    - Just 1 minute off the 101
    - They even take credit cards!

One of the 1st places I danced at after moving out here from Chicago. Great vibe, dancers of all levels and everyone seemed friendly. I missed the lesson .. but if you are new- take advantage of that. Otherwise, there are plenty of experienced leads (and or follows) who will dance with newbies (me included). Looking forward to many a Wednesday night!

Wednesday Night Hop is full of friendly people!  Nice dance floor.  It is a dance studio so it lacks the ambiance of Verdi Club or Cat's Corner, but the added rooms mean more classes held simultaneously.  Teachers are great. Live music nights are fun, esp. when they enlarge the room by moving the divider wall.  Savoy Ball and workshops coming up on 2/19!

Great place to learn or improve on your social dancing skills in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere!

Every month, WNH offers a series of lessons at the beginning and intermediate level, taught by different instructors.  Some months focus on specific techniques, others teach a routine (which a group of us performed as a flashmob at various locations this summer!).  Each instructor brings a different perspective to dancing, and they rotate partners constantly during the classes, so everyone gets to know each other and benefits from others' experience.

As the other reviewers have said, WNH is held in the Cheryl Burke Dance Studio, which is behind the Gold's Gym off the Shoreline exit on 101.  When I started here a little over a year ago, they were meeting in one of the small rooms.  The fact that they moved from this small room out to the main dance floor, and on some nights, they take down the partition, making it an even larger room, speaks to their popularity among the dancing community.  They feature a live band once a month, various DJ's with great music, contests and games.  There's a very friendly atmosphere during the dance -- both follows and leads ask each other to dance.  Oh, I almost forgot -- there are even snacks, fruit, and red licorice to keep you going 'til midnight!

    Come and join us!

Everyone always tells me that Wednesday Night Hop is a really friendly and fun place to be.  We hope to continue that tradition in the new venue (not that far from where it was originally located).

Lessons are always thrilling and we keep the dance parties fun by having a wonderful selection of different deejays spinning swingin' it out from 9-Midnight, as well as throwing in mixers, Shim Shams, Big Apples, Jitterbug Strolls, and the Madison.  It all is a lot of fun!

See you out on the dance floor!

    :) Trevor

One of my favorite places to go dancing--and I've been all over the Bay Area swing scene. I was getting really burnt out on some other places in the SF area--some can be kinda clique-y, with people only dancing with those they already know, etc. Wednesday Night Hop is totally different. It's a really good mix of intermediates and beginners; the teachers there are fantastic and it shows in their students' dancing. I've been impressed and had a fabulous time every time I've gone. I'm pestering all my swing-friends to come down and try it. I think it's a great place if you're a beginner or not, and as an intermediate dancer I find I always learn something new in lessons, the music is good, the dancers are friendly, and the floor is fan-freaking-tastic. Love it!

Wednesday Night Hop is great setting for people who are relatively new to the swing scene.  The people in this scene are very open, welcoming and encouraging.  It's a very fun atmosphere where you can let loose and be silly and really explore your silliness in swing.  There's food and water too.  I'm a regular and will continue to be.  =)
