Review from Amy W.
A few weeks ago I visited some friends in DC for the first time, and it was there that I stumbled upon the world of bar-and-cafe hybrids. I don't know if I just haven't been going to the right places in Chicago, but Webster's Wine Bar is the first place that I've been that feels the closest to the places that I so loved in DC. Webster's was airy and spacious, but also felt homey with the candlelight and casual pictures displayed on the walls. I love that the vibe matched with my mood on most weekends -- laid-back, craving some good and meaningful conversations, possibly with a glass or five of good wine. You can definitely go to Webster's if you're looking for all of that.
Unfortunately my friends and I did not happen to order anything off their wine list, but we did all enjoy the bread pudding dessert, which I would highly recommend. It doesn't seem like a lot at first (the waitress brought it out and my first thought was, "I paid for this one shriveled, flat piece of toast??") but don't let that fool you! The bread pudding was absolutely amazing and actually quite filling!
I will definitely be coming back around for wine, cheese, good friends, and more good times. -

This place is just lovely. You walk in, and everyone's welcoming and friendly. It's dark, but not so dark that you think it's oppressive; it's warm inside, and the candlelight is pretty radiant.
The server was perfect! She was so kind, and although my date was running late, I still felt welcome and well-taken-care-of. She talked about the wine and didn't laugh at my butchered french pronunciation while I ordered. It brought me back in a big way to having visited the Alsace region of France, and loving it. I got two wines, the first of which was a big Bordeaux - it might have been a bit of overkill with no food in my belly, but hey, there's nothing horrible about fabulous wine (right?), no matter how much you've had to eat. The second wine was fantastic and juuuust right. Mmm.
The food was also pretty fantastic. I had the duck with pomegranate, ginger, and fig. It may or may not have kind of life-alteringly good. /Yes./ Get it.
I will definitely be back! The entire experience was wonderful. -

Cozy, warm and inviting. This place was everything a neighborhood gem should strive to be! Nestled up at a small hardwood table with 2-4 people, or sprawled out across a well worn couch that I am sure has heard way to many stories over the years.
Websters is impressive not only in its wine selection, but there carefully crafted tasting flights which are constantly changing as well as a diverse menu that is rustic, hearty and wine friendly.
The space can ebb and flow from a mere standstill to a flurry of activity and standing room only at the bar on a Friday night.
Staff is warm and welcoming and happy to provide their thoughts on the menu and some wine that may best suit your palette.
This place is not for the wine snob. It is not pretentious, no suit required and most importantly not priced into the heavens.
Websters is the epitome of what a Chicago Wine Bar can be.
Drawbacks: Websters is located on the fringe, in-between Lincoln Park and Bucktown. This can present a problem some nights catching a cab home
If you have never been, I can't think of a better time than this winter to make the trek, grab a seat and enjoy a true jewel.
Happy Tasting! -

This bar has great potential to be one of my favorite new places. The bar is warm, cozy and intimate. The service was attentive - no complaints whatsoever. Couldn't stay long - only had one glass of wine, but I definitely recommend this place if you want to have a nice time with somebody special. :)

Only stopped here before a movie for a quick glass of Malbec, but the nice atmosphere made me want to come back for a meal. Great wine selection! Will be back for sure.

I love this place always. What a gem. And all of the other joints it has spawned--telegraph, rootstock. But seriously...what is going on with the music? I think i just listened to The Police for two straight hours. And it wasn't the first time!

Just got back from a lovely night here, nothing new there, I always have a lovely night there. This was my 1st wine tasting and it was fantastic, Jeremy, the host and sommelier, was great, his talk at the start was perfect, not too technical but very informative.
My only suggestion would be to leave out a few jugs of water on buffet table.
Removing a star for the poor service downstairs before the tasting, server was pretty much MIA, although the busser/food runner was great.
Not removing a star for the couple who kept hogging the bar so they could talk to Jeremy, maybe they were friends but GET OUT OF MY WAY!
Looking forward to my next tasting. -

Beautiful hidden gem ( but thanks to yelp, its no longer hidden!). The bf and i went in there for a little nightcap. It is a lovely place to just sit down with a bottle , an appetizer and share stories.
If your into classiness, i can not think of a more perfect first date ( we actually spotted tons of what looked like first dates.. it was very cute!). They have a great cheese plate selection and the food looked great ( although we just went in for wine). Only downside , they only have 2 dessert wine by the glass and way too many by bottle ( which we were obviously very reluctant to buy b/c a glass of sweet wine is way more than enough). Wish they made some of those bottle selections by glass. Also, they need more sweeter whites. But besides that, i say, please go visit! The staff is so knowledgable, patient and it will be worth that 8-10$ u spend per glass :) -

The wine selection is extensive. Decor adds to the experience. A cheese lover delight. Just a great place to spend a late night if you're danced out or barred out but still want to drink and talk.

Great little wine bar, with a good list and plenty of affordable options. It's right on the edge of the wasteland next to the river. I haven't had a bad glass of wine here.
I ate here a few years ago, and remember some great cheeses and small plates too, but haven't eaten here recently.Listed in: Listomania

Mama likes her wine, folks.
I stopped in to Webster's Wine Bar with no expectations other than having a little pre-movie drinkie and snackie with my friend. The folks at Webster's blew me away. Not only was the service impeccable (Hi dreamy waiter Dylan!), but the wines were delicious and the menu looked wonderful.
My friend and I decided on a cheese plate with some cheddar, a bleu, and a couple of others that I don't remember. We also ordered the pate and it was divine.
The wine-o-the-day was a nice little list of three rose wines and all of them were refreshing, crisp, and perfect for our light meal on a hot summer day. -
Review from Kelly A.
I went to a wine tasting here and couldn't recommend it more highly. The wine tasting I went to was about French biodynamic wines as I recall and was absolutely fantastic. We started off the night with a generous pour of wine and some information on biodynamic wines and then continued off to taste about 10 or so in total. When pouring they didn't necessarily tell you much information about the wine off the bat but if you were more curious and asked they were more than happy to tell you whatever you wanted to know.
I especially loved that they were oh so generous with the wine and more than happy to pour you a second or third pour of whatever you were interested in.
In addition to the wine there was also a good selection of noshes (in our case, flatbread pizzas) though they did tend to go quickly. We were lucky and were drinking at a table right by the pizza so we definitely did not go hungry, but I'm not sure that those who lingered by the bar had the same fate.
Overall, it was a great experience. It was a bit crowded because they had just issued a groupon, but even though I personally didn't have one I still enjoyed the experience and considered it a good value. -

Only been there once, but I'm sold.
We wandered the night a bit looking for a decent dinner spot after a movie and chanced upon Webster's. The menu is fairly simple, and they have a few specials (sounds like a rotating schedule, but I've only been there once so I"ll find out more later!). I tried the salmon, which was very good. I paired it with a French Malbec (unorthodox, but good). The waitress was able to help us sort through some recommendations, which I was thankful for, since I'm not a great fan of white wines.
The service is definitely a thumbs up here. Good recommendations, prompt service and she came back to check on us several times throughout the meal.
Overall, a venue I'm definitely willing to visit again when I'm around. -
Review from Rachel H.
Clearly Webster's isn't a complete unknown. Nearly 200 reviews prove that. That and it's right by the movies. That said, this place is a bit under the radar, and I like it like that.
A friend and I chose Webster's a our locale for an after work, after week unwinding and had a jolly old time. Webster's is nice because you can go all out to impress a date or just chill with a pal. The extensive wine list provides fancy reserve bottles, wines by the glass, more affordable bottles, or flights. While there are indeed some chest grabbingly pricey bottles, there are choices for the more frugal wine lover as well.
Equally lovely were our snacks. The "large wedge of brie" served with a head of garlic and bread and the mushrooms with, you guessed it, more garlic, hit the spot. Watch out, vampires, you've met your match with these ladies.
I'd absolutely check this semi-secret spot out again, particularly before or after a movie. -
Review from Kensey W.
came here with a friend on night after catching a movie. in general i am opposed to wine bars. i don't like the feel of most of them and i don't enough about wine - it's all about the food to me. but that being said, there is a very extensive wine list and i can't imagine anyone who likes wine would be unable to find something to suit them.
we had the salmon, which was good. i usually don't like cooked fish, but the salmon was juicy with a crispy skin and i didn't mind it so much. what really made the dish was the spiced mango and some kind of root veggie (daikon maybe?) it was served on. the sweetness of the mango and the crunch of veggie was so perfect, and none of it overwhelmed the fish and it wasn't too heavy on any one flavor.
also had the duck leg confit and it was only okay. the duck was tender but it was served on a bed of rice that had a salty and not great gravy on it. i still like it and it was a satisfying part of the meal, but i get disappointed when duck isn't great so i'd say skip that.
the best part of the meal was the bread pudding! it was kind of different, served as a slice, more like toast. but it was so so good. moist and fluffy. i wish it had a wetter sauce on it but i guess it's fancier without it. still, it was amazing!
the service was also great - some of the best i've had. our waitress was super sweet and helpful and attentive. i'd recommend coming here if you are into wine, but at least from this visit, the main plates seem to be hit or miss. -

The Websters of Oz.
I needed:
Oil- "Oil! Darn it, my joints are old and creaky!" (eyes bar)
Courage- Of the liquid kind.
Heart- Nothing good company and food can't fix.
Brain- Intimate and deep discussion.
We followed the gray paved road to Websters. I've been here a few times and pleased but this review is for my most recent visit. We arrived at Pepaw dining time (7:20 pm Sat.) and got a great spot on the plush velvet couch in front of the picture window.
It's a prime date destination; dim, candlelite, cozy. The decor is an unique juxtopostion of modern clean lines with Victorian influences. Live piano music mixed standards, jazzy tunes, and instrumentals and it set a great tone for the evening. There are paintings on sale all over the walls. My partner didn't like them. Half were derivative of Jackson Pollock, the others resembled Death Cab for Cutie's Narrow Stairs album cover.
We ordered a bottle of Gramona 2003 "Imperial" Gran Reserva Cava which tasted of vanilla and jasmine and very smooth. Delicious.
Our waiter pointed to the label and said, "I'm going there next week."
I shrewdly determined he didn't mean the vineyard or to live in the bottle like a Genie so asked if he'd been to Spain before. We had a spirited discussion of Spain, the sites, cuisine, and El Bulli. He was a great server and seems to love food and wine.
Did I say it was a romantical spot? It is. And a couple to our left was heading past second at their table. Hey, I've been there. If you want to know more you'll have to buy the video.
We ordered:
Garlicky Hummus sprinkled with paprika and olives with warm, toasty pita triangles. Good.
TWO orders of Bacon wrapped dates stuffed with almonds. The shining star; sweet chewy goodness hugged with salty, savory bacon and a crunchy base. Order one or more of this tapas. It's terrific!
Creminelli truffle salami plate with olives, caramelized walnuts, and toasts. I didn't like this as much.
Cheese plate of Delice de Bourgogne- a soft ripened, triple cream, Brie style cheese with warm baguette size of palm, same candied walnuts, and quince jam. We both liked a lot though portions were tiny.
There's no place like (a home away from) home.
In Vino Veritas, if you don't like it kiss my glass.Listed in: Date Places, ROTDs

My book club has been coming to Webster Wine Bar for our holiday outing for years. We have always enjoyed the atmosphere, the food, the entertainment, the staff, and of course the wine. That was until last night.
As one of the first two to arrive, I settled in and ordered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon for $8.50 from our waitress. After she brought it out in a very nice and timely fashion, I took my first sip. Immediate "this is a good wine that has gone bad" taste. Just to confirm, I had my fellow book club member try and she promptly made the vinegar taste face as well. No problem, I thought, I will inform the waitress of how it tastes and send it back. Well, this part was not easy.
I was informed that they would have one their staff members taste the wine and decide if the wine was bad. If the staff deemed it wasn't, well too bad for me - they would not take it off the bill. After a brief exchange of how I was not going to accept that answer and my demand to speak to the manager, the bad wine was comped.
I have to say that I do not appreciate being treated like my taste buds are inadequate to discern bad wine. I came to relax after a long work day, not to be treated poorly by pretentious waitstaff. Webster Wine Bar, you blew it on customer service last night. DOC Wine Bar or Bin 36 ... I bet your wine is fine. -

They have a great by the glass selection and the decor is great for romance. You can tell there are a bunch of internet dates going on here. The prices have gotten progressively worse here over the last couple years and the service can be hit or miss. Pretty good cheese selection but again a little on the pricey side.

Another great place for wine! Doesn't beat my favorite place The Tasting Room, but still an excellent place to go. Maybe because we rented the upstairs for my birthday, but it seemed spacious enough. Still the place is a bit small and cramped when it gets crowded downstairs.
The service was excellent there as well. They answered all our questions about wine and beer and made great suggestions. They did deny us taking shots when ordered, but secretly I do respect that policy and that they stood by it.
I need to make my way back there sometime... -

Cozy, comfortable & romantic is how I would describe Webster's wine bar.
The decor is intimate and has a vintage feel to it, which is how a wine bar should be. When our waitress handed the menu, I thought she was giving me a book.... the wine list is LONG!! They have wines from all over the world. And for a novice like me they have a very knowledgeable & helpful staff. I thoroughly enjoyed the Merlot from the Tre-Veneto region in Italy and the pizza with robiola cheese, truffle oil and arugula. -

I'd give this place a better score, but it was very very loud in there and very tight on space. They sat 4 of us at a table that was barely big enough for 2. Granted, we did go on a Friday night, but it would have been worth waiting for a bigger table. Aside from that though, impressive wine list and the food was delicious and priced right for the portion sizes. I had a delicious salmon served over a bed of mango slices, and the four of us shared a bottle of Austrian Pinot noir that was decent. I'd go back on a weeknight or later on a Friday or Saturday.

So I've driven past here too many times in the past couple years but for some reason never stopped in. I've been once now and its a nice place to chill and have some wine (and cheese). I can't recall the exact cheese we had but it was goat and it was very good. As for the wine we had a few different ones, but mistakenly got the sherry which I wasn't really fond of. Maybe next time I'll do a little research before making a selection...

This place has been here forever, and I hope it never goes away. It is a lair. You can sit up front and yak and be loud with the rest of the babblers, you can go upstairs to the party room for an event, or you can dig into the back to dish and drink and scheme and plan and schmooze and nosh and kibbitz and nibble like the three of us did.
Wine, cheese, hummus, olives, great beer . . . what more do you need to know? Ambiance for days for whatever you have planned - a hot date, friend hangout or a fun stop on the way to further amusements as we all did on this night.
I'll never stop coming here.Listed in: Wine and Cheese!

This is where we bring out-of-town guests their first night in town, as well as clients for casual business meetings
Ambient lighting, comfy, charming decor, super-knowledgeable and non-pushy staff, impressive wine list with at least a dozen flights, and delicious bacon-wrapped dates.
It's a winner every time, and sure to impress anyone unfamiliar with the place.
Two additional hints: their summer patio is not to be missed, as are their year-round wine tastings! -

Webster's Wine Bar has found the sweet spot between yuppy fancy-pants and laid back comfort. It seems to be a bit off the beaten path, making it all the more quaint-feeling and enjoyable. Love the varied wine selections, the dimly lit interior, the dark colored decor and unpretentious attitude. It's sex-appeal without snobbery.
The BF and I come for the wine, and love to order different flights and try to identify the aromas/flavors using the detailed descriptions from the wine list. While his wine palette seems to be rapidly developing, I'm still working on broadening my tastes from rieslings and Boone's Farm. :) -

This is a nice wine bar with a chill atmosphere. They have a huge selections of wines by the glass or the bottle. They also have a good food menu (albeit it is not gluten-free). I would recommend the 10-year Tawny port here as well.

I actually liked Webster's wine bar. The place is much larger than it looks. The wine list was average I'd say but a bit pricey. The waiter we had actually knew his wines and was able to offer some good selections, although after googling them realized the steep markup. But nontheless it was pretty good.
The real standout for me was the food. The mushroom appetizer and the meat and cheese trays were just uber tasty. The worst part was the service. I was waiting for someone but sat down @ 7pm when it wasn't too busy yet and I still waiting 20 minutes for someone to come over to take my order. And that's a real 20 minutes (I timed it). I think they could tell I was waiting for someone but don't you usually like waiting better when there's a drink involved? -

Ilana and Vicki are awesome! They played Scrabble with me the first time I wandered in, and were just so nice to a fairly-newcomer to Chicago. I don't remember the name of the red wine I had when I went, but it was excellent. I think the wines are priced just right. They have rotating art on the walls. All the food I've had is on par. The first night I went there was a huge thunderstorm, and even though they closed while I was there, they offered to let me stay until the storm had passed. I declined, but thought that was such a nice gesture (something you usually only find down South where I'm from). My new favorite in Chicago!

This establishment has a very cozy feel to it. There are couches in the front and back in which you can just lounge and the lighting is perfectly dim. My lady and I mosey on down and sit at the bar. We're just planning on having a few drinks and apps and head out to dinner. It's chilly outside so we are going all out on Reds. Their wine list is sick. I like to see wines I know are awesome when I go to a wine bar, but I LOVE it even more to see wines i've never even heard of, WITH some pretty nice tasty notes. I really wanted one of each. If you are into flights, you can go that route as well. But for me, the full glass of wines chosen were still not enough for me. The cured meats and cheese selection is definitely quality over quantity. Iberico, Serrano and Truffled Salami were the winners of the meats, while the Monte Enebro killed the competition of the quesos. After enjoying the apps, I opted to scratch our elsewhere dinner plans and hit up the Duck Confit with Orzo. C'etait phenomenale! On our way out we took a quick tour of the upstairs, which was just as cozy as downstairs. Long story short, I left a happy wino. The funny thing is I work just down the street and pass this place everyday. I've just added a new pitstop on my way home.

The perfect place to meet before or after a movie at the Webster theater. It is a cute wine bar with sidewalk seating and plenty of room inside. They offer a very wide selection of wines, and several flights of wine. The menu has snacks, many cheeses, as well as full meals.

So when I think of wine bars, I usually think of dimly lit place with snobby winos and bartenders. As a non-wino myself, sometimes I am a little intimidated to step into places like Webster's.
This place was unpretentious, laid-back, and so awesome. My boyfriend & I just sat at the bar all night and downed glasses of wine. The bartenders were really friendly, and the hostess was hilarious.
Love this place! -

Quite enjoyable coming back here, with a friend I hadn't seen in awhile.
Wasn't impressed with the bacon wrapped dated. All that could be tasted was the bacon. My friend agreed
Had 2 flights of wine (I had the wintery reds) which were enjoyable and seemed to go well with the leg of duck I had.
Our waiter was sooo knowledgeable (really) I was impressed, and since the establishment supports traning the staff on knowledge, I am again reminded on why this place is awesome.
Moving to the couch was probably a poor move, as we both felt the gravity underneath us getting stronger, and I can say I slept the sleep of the just that night.
I need to go back and take my own pics...1 Previous Review: Show all »

A much anticipated and long overdue date night brought us back to Webster's Wine Bar, and absolutely nothing about our experience let us down. I had always enjoyed this spot when I lived in Lincoln Park during my post-collegiate years... the outstanding cheese and small plates, great live music, exquisite duck confit (something that I have learned to appreciate the rarity of in my adulthood), and, of course, the extensive wine list that comes with an expertly trained server who, as my not-a-big-drinker-boyfriend put it, never fails to "bring me exactly what I didn't know I wanted because I never know what to ask for." As for me, while I do not consider myself a wine expert at all, I certainly know my way around Argentinian and Chilean reds among others. That said, I never fail to be amazed when I describe to the staff what I usually enjoy, ask to be surprised, and leave my dining experience in their very capable hands. (this most recent visit presented me with the phenomenal Domaine de la Pepiere Cuvée, a French Malbec, that I will be serving at Thanksgiving this year!) In all, I recommend Webster's for an amazing meal for two or a fantastic night out with friends... make sure you check out their live music nights! Us, we will be attending some of their exquisite wine tastings to keep ourselves warm and happy this winter ;) salude!

came here for an after-movie drink at the theater across the street... the service was excellent, and the ambiance was very cozy, yet modern. there are velvet couches tucked away for a romantic date or banquet tables perfect for an engagement party. We sat on the patio, but on this particular day there was an odor coming off the river, not sure if that's a daily occurence... While we didn't eat, everyone's food looked amazing, will definitely have to come back for a pre-movie dinner or appetizers some time.

This is a great little out of the way wine bar. The wine selection comes in a large book and the staff is knowledgeable. If you don't know what to get either ask the wait staff or try one of several wine flights available. It is also quite dim lit and quiet. A great date location!

Oh my gosh delish!
Wine and cheese with two good friends to quietly celebrate my xxth birthday on a Saturday night.
Flights of wine are so fun, and generally all very good - I wouldn't buy a case of every one of them, but that's the whole point of flights, to give some new things a try. There was a particular red that had an almost cheese-like aftertaste - sounds kinda eek but it was fab.
Cheese and dates to accompany all the wine we were enjoying. Seriously amazing cheeses. Something sharp white cheddary, something manchegoy, something almost as aged as bleu but not quite, a handful of others - I get dizzy just thinking about how good they were.
The hostess was great - we started at the bar but sat us as soon as there was a table available, and it just so happened to be the coveted couch. Excellent.
One star away from perfection because it's priced a little out of my comfort zone for me to be a regular here, and because it gets ridiculously loud as soon as it gets a little full. And boy did it fill up. Arrive early (by 9-ish) if you don't want to wait too long for a table or be forced to stand near the crowded bar stools.
