10 reviews for Weathervane Tavern
I went to dinner here the other night and overall I was very impressed. This tiny place, located in an old New England style building in out-of-the-way Hamilton, was packed on a Monday night, something many restaurants can only dream about. As I perused the menu, I discovered what may have been the draw this evening--all you can eat steak tips on Monday (and Tuesday, if I remember correctly) for $14.95. Sadly, I had just eaten a very large steak the previous night, so I did not take advantage of this incredible deal, but I'll be back sometime to try it. Instead, I opted for the crab cakes. They were great! Full of fresh crab meat with very little filler and the accompanying fries were served piping hot, the way I like them. Our server was efficient and friendly, although initially I felt a slight tinge of annoyance when we didn't order cocktails right away. Kind of a "great, this tip is going to suck" vibe, which I'm sure many servers think to themselves, but the customer shouldn't pick up on that. The annoyance was fleeting, however, and didn't affect service at all. In fact, we did end up ordering cocktails with our meals. The wine pour was pretty generous and the cosmopolitan made just the way my dining companion and I like them--good and limey. Be warned, however, that the atmosphere here is more Sam Adams and less cosmopolitan, so if you are looking for unusual cocktails, look elsewhere.
As far as value goes, prices are very reasonable--I think even the sirloin steak was under 20 bucks. Drinks are also very reasonably priced. My wine was $5.50 and the cosmopolitan was only $6.25.
Concerning the atmosphere, the place seems to draw a good crowd of locals, which is good because really, I don't think there's much to do in Hamilton that would draw a lot of visitors. The architecture of the building lends a lot of character and charm to the place, but the place is cramped. Tables are very close together and the bar is small, but that doesn't seem to stop people from going. Reading some other reviews, apparently you usually have to wait awhile for a table. I guess we were very lucky to be able to walk right in. I'm glad I tried this place and will be back to try it again.
My plate barely fits the table, my seat is touching the person eating next to me and I get to hear awkward conversations with nearby tables throughout the entire meal because the space is so limited in every way.
But does this stop me from going to this place on Monday/Tuesday nights for the all-you-can-eat steak tips?? heck no. Do I feel so nasty aftewards?? heck yea. But do i go back over and over again? oh yea.
Go early (line is way too long) and as you order the steak tips, order two more so that as soon as you are done with the steak tips, you have more hot steak tips are waiting for you to consume right away.
Please order salad for your side-dish so you are not eating just steak tips all throughout the meal which could get a bit meaty....though I won't get mad if you order fries because they are MONEY!!
As far as seafood dishes are concerned, I wish I could order them all and taste how good they are....but time and time again, I failed to do so and I order all-you-can-eat steak tips and come home thinking how the heck am I gonna burn all these calories...=)
The good...
Went there with the parents one night and had all-you-can-eat steak tips. That was awesome. I was all over that for a rare treat. They are outstanding.
They had a scallop and lobster pie that my mother let me have a try of. Effing amazing.
Ample parking.
The Not So Good...
Took forever to get a seat. I understand the place is small, so that isn't much of an issue. However, they've been there forever and the only waiting areas are in the hallway, which is crowded and narrow, outside (which only works if the weather is nice), and by the small bar area. The problem with the last part is that the waitresses (more on this in a second) are constantly flying through there. I was nearly plowed over several times while talking to an old co-worker of mine.
Really uncomfortable seats. You really can't settle down for a meal before the effing seats numbs your ass.
They wouldn't let us take the remaining steak tips we had home. There were four left. It wasn't like we ordered eight skewers and wrapped them up. Use some judgment. This was stupid and arbitrary.
The Ugly...
We got a good waitress, but the others were rude. While talking to the aforementioned former co-workers we were rudely shouted by one of the waitresses when she came through. Is it my fault you chose to work in such a small place? With an attitude like that and such awesome qualifications I'm sure this woman could find gainful employment at the RMV.
We were a party of three, they were going to seat a party of seven, that came after us and wasn't a full party, ahead of us. We had to wait because we weren't a full party, but they'll make an exception for a 4 out of 7 party? Horeshit. We spoke up about that to get seated. That's just stupid, rude and, again arbitrary.
All in all, it's an OK place. Food is good, beverage selection is ok, but the cramped place, uncomfortable seating, hit-or-miss waitresses, and abitrary rules for hosting make it a 2.5, at best. If the food sucked I'd rate it lower. It got 2.5 stars on awesome food alone, so if you can deal with the other nonsense, you're golden.
It is very packed and crowded. it might be good to go right when it opens. The prices are definitely reasonable and the food is very tasty.
I loved the steak tips, because that is what I was told to order. I would love to go and try other dishes.
They also serve beer and wanted to order one but decided not to because it was so early in the day.
The service was great, the only thing was the long wait to get a table.
Ah the Weathervane Tavern, not to be confused with seafood restaurant chain. Although they do offer some good seafood dishes like fried haddock, whole fried clams, scallops, etc.
The weathervane has a good selection of beers. They have great steak tips, which you can get "all you can eat" for only $14.99 on Mondays and Tuesdays!!! They have good clam chowder, burgers and if you like reuben's, give their reuben a try.
I fell in love with this place when I walked in. Maybe I'm a sucker for local joints in 1700s style buildings, I don't know, but I loved it when I went in and I loved it throughout the meal. This place is TINY, and if you get here in peak dinner hours, you will wait in the Lilliputian hallway. Now, moving past that and into the one-room dining room, you'll find it filled with all types of people; the old-money Hamilton types, the working class Massachusetts people and the young families with their broods of children; I really enjoy that mixing and mingling of classes and generations.
I had their "all you can eat" steak tips, which were seasoned pretty well and kept coming one skewer after another. I thought their selection was pretty good, though a bit on the small side, and the selection of sides to choose from was appreciated.
I love this place.... that is whenever I can find a table without an hour plus wait. It has the old New England Tavern feel to it. Nothing fancy, but the food is excellent and you won't find a better deal.
The ultimate place to get a bite to eat. It's a 'townie' type place but even if you are not from the town the folks are really nice. The prices are incredibly reasonable and the quality of the food is superb. The Weathervane is very small so be prepared to wait but it's worth it.
This place is tiny and always crowded, though I can understand why. Lack of anything better in Hamilton, perhaps? I ordered the haddock & rice pilaf with a salad. The salad & dressing were good, and the haddock was flaky & topped with buttery cracker crumbs. The rice was dry. The menu is small, I can't really remember what was on it. Burgers, and fried food for apps, I think. I thought it was just OK, nothing special though. Definately a townie place.
Being a "local" i was told this was a great place to eat. Having heard how crowded it gets, i decided to try it for lunch. The hostess was nice, noticing I had my elderly grandmother with me, she gave us our choice of seats. I thought this was very accommodating. Our waitress promptly came over, but never told us her name. I thought that was unfortunate because for the remainder of our meal I had to basically tackle her to get her attention. I asked if they made their own chowder and she rudely replied "um yes, we are famous for it". I could see why when in arrived in a bread bowl, looking so yummy. But we all know looks can be deceiving. The Weathervane must be famous for the crappiest New England chowder, as it tasted awful. However, my grandmother's salad looked fresh. The waitress never came back to offer another round of drinks, but she did briefly ask if things were ok. There were obviously some local...um, drunks, at the bar. One even felt up his girlfriend....dinner AND a show? Nice!
