Outstanding sushi at ridiculously low prices.....

I love this place. it's a cute little hole in the wall (hidden gem). Nothing fancy about the decor, just an intimate vibe with a few tables and some bar seating. Service is above average even though there is usually just one sushi chef and one server. I have never had to wait to be sat, altough I've never attempted to go on a Friday or Saturday night. I imagine it may be a bit crowded.

I am a huge spicy tuna fan, this place makes the best, hands down! SOOO spicy!!! A must try is the mango roll, and also the salmon cream cheese roll. The edamami is always perfectly warm, just the way I like it. The daily specials never fail to please the palate.

If you're looking for superb sushi & modest prices in a small relaxed setting...you simply can't go wrong here!

I came in here last week for some much needed sushi.  This place is awesome!  I can understand how people complain about the service here, as when we were here there were only two people working; a husband and a wife I assume.  The male rolled the sushi, the female took care of the server duties.  I could imagine that when this place got crowded things would slow down quite a bit.  But, there were only about 8 other people in the restaurant so this was not an issue for us.

The fish came out pretty quickly, and it was all delicious.  We ordered a variety of tuna, some yellowtail, edamame, and a couple of beers for our dinner.  The fish cost us LESS THAN $20.  WHAT??  I think this place will become a regular dining establishment for me based on this experience.

As long as you aren't in a hurry, this place is well worth it.  The couple who run it is friendly and they know how to do what they do.

After reading reviews on this place and having a mad sushi craving I dragged my BF here on Mon night.

I am in love.

We walked in and were immediately told 30 min wait for sushi by the only sushi chef. we said no problem. had ourselves some beer and miso soup in the meantime.

sushi came after about 30 mins and was amazing. we had 5 rolls for 23.50. UNHEARD OF! spicy tuna was fresh and spicy. crab was seasoned and the shrimp was amazing. yellowtail was fresh as well.

overall, i'm in love. i think i have found my new sushi spot.

I've walked by Wayo Sushi for over 10 years and thought nothing of it until I read the reviews on Yelp.

Met a date there and no reservation was required.  The hostess told us that it would take about 30 minutes to get our order and we didn't mind; It gave us time to talk.  There are 8 tables that seats 2 and about 10 bar/counter seats.  There is only 1 chef and 1 hostess so if you're not in a hurry the sushi is great here.  It was a very comfortable place.

I have to give the hostess 5 stars alone because she is just sooo patient.  She approached us a couple of times for our order and since we were caught up in our conversation, we didn't pick anything out.  She stood there patiently with a smile.

We ordered:
spicy tuna salad --  GREAT!!
seaweed salad - pretty good
salmon sashimi -- so fresh and melts in your mouth
Hamachi - vvery good
ebi roll - very good

We ordered sake and I think she was generous about the portion.

This IS a hidden gem and I'd definitely come back here again and again.  This is my new sushi place to go to.  The price is INEXPENSIVE!!!  My five stars given to the hostess is my own separate rating aside from the five I've given the restaurant.

Small, intimate sushi establishment right on the bustling Van Ness street...easy to miss but totally worth coming to. Nothing fancy about it but the food more than makes up for the plain atmosphere. There wasn't much seating but luckily we didn't have to wait for a table on a Saturday night.

They did pre-warn us that there was only one sushi chef working so the wait for the food might take longer than usual which we were fine with. Not a ton of options to choose from but they did have daily specials written on a whiteboard by the door. Prices were definitely reasonable and I really liked their green tea too!

salmon sashimi ($9.50) - Came with 6 pretty large pieces of salmon and a side salad. The fish was super fresh and not too lean...had some fat which I like. Melted in my mouth...so delish! (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)

sea fairy roll ($9.50) - Cali roll topped with raw scallop. This was my first time having raw scallop and I loved it! It wasn't fishy tasting at all...very soft and had a nice contrast with the tobiko on top. My favorite roll of the meal!

mango spicy tuna roll special ($5) - One of the daily specials...a simple roll containing just tuna and a piece of mango in the middle. The mango was sweet and ripe and went really well with the spiciness of the tuna.

dynamite roll ($5) - Spicy tuna and avocado topped with tobiko. Just a hint of spiciness but they didn't skimp on the fish. I liked the creamy avocado and pops of tobiko. Yum!

The sushi rolls had a perfect rice to filling ratio, they didn't really fall apart when bit in half, and the sushi rice was just sticky enough but not mushy. They weren't the prettiest or biggest rolls I've seen, but were made well and above all were extremely fresh! The food filled the both of us up too. Our waitress was sweet and checked on us often...she also didn't kick us out when we sat for an extra hour just chatting.

I will be coming back!

It's about time I update my Wayo review...I eat here at least once a week and usually get the spicy tuna salad, so much so that they know me on sight and remember what I order. The fish selection isn't huge but what they have is fresh and CHEAP. They also do a great cucumber salad, seaweed salad, and the special mango rolls are a fun way to mix things up a bit.

It's a mom and pop operation so service can be a bit slow but it's always friendly and definitely worth the wait. Whether you're in the hood for a movie at AMC or a show at the Regency or just in the mood to try a new sushi joint, you really should give Wayo a shot.

The sushi here was pretty good. I wouldn't go as far as the best sushi ever but the sushi was fresh and tasty. I came with a fellow yelp friend of mines which was great company. The only thing about our visit here was that we did have to wait quite a while for our food because there was only 1 sushi chef for the whole restaurant. Luckily for us, the time seemed to pass by.

She ordered the sushi plate which had some tuna maki, nigiri, soup and salad. I ordered some different nigiri, a dragon roll and a spicy hamachi roll. I also happened to order an order of uni and let her try 1 after I did. She had a bad experience with it before and I insisted that she tried it again. She was a champ and did try it again and liked it. Uni is usually really good or pretty horrible depending on how fresh it is. It was fresh on this occasion.

Would I come back? Quite possibly.

I love Mom and Pop sushi places.  Wanted to get some dinner before hitting the Red Devil's Lounge to see some bands.  Since Mikey U has been talking about sushi on Twitter all week.  I was craving for some badly.  It is a really small sushi place and only run by the husband and wife.  When we walked in there was a number of customers waiting for sushi.  You know the sushi is good, plus they got a Yelp sticker on the front door.

We had to wait awhile for our sushi but I didn't mind since we were not in a rush.  They pretty much just serve sushi where which was great and fresh. Had some interesting combos like with Mango but I didn't try them.  I end up ordering the assorted sushi and it was good and not bad for the price.  Its a great little place to just have some good sushi and convo.  I say a good place to bring a date. Overall dinner was great and would back when I am in the area again.

A small, family run sushi place, with really high quality fish.

The hamachi, especially, was excellent.  As was the cucumber/octopus salad (which, though, is more cucumber than octopus).  The salmon was melt-in-your-mouth and the eel was super fresh.

It was empty when we got there at 7:30 on a Saturday but filled up while we were there.

I recommend.

My friend and I were in the mood for some Japanese food last night so naturally we yelped it and found this place!

It's a small restaurant with a few tables and a sushi bar. If I'm remembering correctly, their dinner hours are 6-10pm but they are also open for lunch during the week. We were the first table in there for dinner but a few other parties trickled in while we were eating. The waitress was friendly and attentive.

We ordered miso soup, spicy tuna salad, hamachi sushi and maguro (tuna) sashimi. Everything was very fresh and not too expensive. Our total bill was about $30. Although I don't personally mind, I only saw several roll choices.

One of those tiny sushi places tucked into some obscure area. Yes, it's on Van Ness,  but I blame the gigantic tree blocking this tiny place. And yes, I admit was walking on the sidewalk between the tree and the restaurant, but still. I did enjoyed the tree from the inside through the unobstructed display window.

Arrived here on a chilly weekday , and it was empty. Kinda nice to have a place with your friends. Wayo is one of those husband and wife sushi teams--service was prompt until 3 parties showed up.

As for the food, I think the mango rolls won me over. The rest of the sushi was okay. I don't know which one it was, but try not to get the rolls that have a smaller diameter. The chef seems to put significantly less; the ratio was definitely skewed compared to the larger rolls. Sea Fairy was okay. I felt the scallop on top tasted kinda fishy. Tuna was okay too. Snow leopard, nothing too exotic or special.

Mediocre sushi, slow service, average prices.

Salmon is not supposed to be chewy. Theirs was. I went here with a date and it was a huge disappointment. I was hoping for a cute hole in the wall sushi restaurant  with good food, what I got was really mediocre. And the dragon roll was pretty poorly done, I have had so much better so many times. In my opinion, you would be a lot better off going to Sudachi's - it's cheaper, way better ambiance, faster service, nicer service, and the fish isn't amazing but it is much better than this.

Also my date did not handle the sushi well and got a bit sick, so yeah, that's not good. Not coming back here, there's just too many sushi places to give it a second shot.. bill totaled $50 for 1 large beer and 4 rolls. At that price I can have GOOD sushi not this stuff.

Just got back from dinner here on a Sunday night.

The two of us ordered four rolls (3 of them were 6 pieces and 1 was 4 pieces) and green tea ice cream, and the total check was $29 after tax! Def reasonably priced! I can't remember the names of all the rolls, but my favorite was a california roll topped with scallops. They also gave a very healthy portion of green tea ice cream :)

I also liked having the brown rice option. I liked it, but the BF didn't (he said it tasted too "healthy"). I wish they had tamago bc that's my BF's favorite, so he was a bit disappointed they didn't have that.

Overall - great place!

I found this place purely as a victim of circumstance. For the twenty millionth time I tried to go to Sushi Sho in the east bay only to have the place be closed, the wait be obnoxious, two seats be separated by some fat ass who refused to move down one seat or me getting too drunk beforehand to properly behave in a place like that.

I was not drunk when I dined here. I was, however, seriously craving some good sushi, Sushi Sho had let me down once again, and I had heard this place could fill the void left in my heart and stomach. They did.

There are only two people working here on the weekend and one on weekdays so patience is a virtue, but one that pays off when you get your food. The menu is simple with the exception of a few fancy rolls, at least 50% of them including mango (the reason I could not bring myself to give this place 5 stars).

If you like fancy crazy deep fried crap and shit sticking out of the ends and piled on top of your sushi then this is definitely not the place. If you like a quiet place where the emphasis is on quality then you will not be disappointed.

EXCELLENT SERVICE.  Small place but cozy, made me want to be on a date.  Sushi was very good.  And I'm not a connoisseur or anything but the ginger and wasabi were the best I've ever had.  They have a lot of mango roll options, and they also give you the option of having your sushi rolled with brown rice- which I tried, but it wasn't my bag.  Support this place!  They are hard-working and the prices are very reasonable.

Nah.

I like hole-in-the-wall places (+1).
They were playing some old jazz in the background (+1).
This is a small independent business seemingly run by a husband and wife (+1).
The price is reasonable - I guess.

I'm sorry, but the sushi here is totally amateur, not up to my authentic sushi standards. I tried a couple of nigiris and quickly switched to Americanized rolls (aka jive-ass-rolls, per Mr. nobu k).

My brother who used to work as a cook at a casual izakaya-type restaurant in Japan years ago (note: not a serious sushi-restaurant) makes way better nigiri than Wayo's. The nigiri at Wayo is just about as good as nigiri would be if I ever made one (and I've never made one in my life).

I would not consider it a serious sushi restaurant. However, Wayo has a nice laid-back vibe, is pretty clean and cozy, and the people here seem pretty nice. I might stop by for a glass of Sapporo and a dragon roll after a long day of work.

Being from the east coast, and suffering frozen sushi even at expensive Japanese restaurants, this is obviously a 5-star review. However, in San Fran - all the seafood is better, so you then have to start comparing the butter-soft sushi restaurants against each other. This one ranks high, but not the highest. I always suggest going up to the waiter and saying "2 of everything from the specials" when im feeling saucy, but none the less ask him to go bother the chef and have him suggest a plate $40 worth of the different specials. Great dinner!

still have a love affair with wayo, though it gets more and more crowded by the second. i really need to stop introducing people to it.

standard order:
saba (just the right amount of fat in it for it to melt into your tongue)
amaebi (no fried head, sorry!)
uni (always fresh and unbelievably good)
sake (sometimes hit or miss... they won't always give you the yummy belly portion)
hamachi (soft and oh! so delicious)
shiro maguro (consistently good)
snow leopard roll(california roll topped with fresh scallops and japanese mayo-- rich and delicious)

yes, all for one person. deal with it!

love you, mamoru!

Does it matter when the owner is the sushi chef?  Yes, yes, yes!  A return visit to this neighborhood gem confirmed that it serves the freshest fish with an enthusiasm worthy of its high quality.  You simply have to ignore the small quarters as you order brown or white rice, tea or a beer with your meal.

Appreciating the speed with which the owner prepares the orders is possible only if you are sitting at the counter. Whatever your favorite:  Seaweed salads, dragon rolls, ikura or California rolls, as well as unique mango combinations are on the menu.  Be prepared, the interior is modest in this tiny wonder, though the prices run about $30 a person.  If you are visiting SF, know that this is one of the reasons people love this town.

I really like Wayo after my dinner here. I've walked by it dozens of times and have been wanting to try it. First of all, its great for a person like me on a recession budget: we had salmon sashimi, four rolls and 2 beers for $45. Second, the sushi iteself was fresh and tasty and third, the service was very attentive and friendly. Not much more to ask for than that. I will definitely be back!

Cheap sushi is an oxymoron; either that or it tastes like shit and leaves you sitting on the porcelain throne the next day. At least, that's what I thought until I stumbled upon Wayo. A very unassuming place staffed by only two employees, the wife handles the waitressing while the husband makes the food.

The crown jewel of Wayo is the hamachi sashimi. At $9 for five thick fresh slices, this is by far the best deal in town. Each slice consisted of magnificent whitish fish with a stunning rose colored tip. These were served at the perfect temperature to maximize their sweet, milky and buttery flavors. They literally melted in your mouth. Waitress, keep these coming please!

Unfortunately, the crown jewel is the only thing reliable at this sushi joint. Avoid the rolls at all costs. With dry bland rice, damp seaweed and flavorless fish, these were major disappointments. Maybe I came on a bad day, but the uni, maguro, unagi and the special mango rolls all tasted like dusty old shoeboxes. The service is also bit slow, but go ahead, I dare you to piss off a sushi chef and order uni nigiri at the same time.

Hidden gem no more! I've waited over an hour to sit at the bar and longer for a table.

This is cheap authentic sushi, when i come here I almost feel like I'm stealing. The rolls start at $5 and the most expensive one is $9.50. If you prefer brown rice in lieu of white, just ask. Fresh grade A fish melts in your mouth, no chewing required. The rolls are very traditional and they have specials written a on whiteboard, it's been mango for a while.

The inside is nothing fancy. There is a picture of geisha girls and Mt. Fiji. 3 tables along the window and a black bar that seats 18. It can get hot inside and there's one fan.

Did I mention the chef and the waitress is Japanese? I mention this because some of my friends say the best sushi places have Japanese chef.

Some of my favorite days are when instead of taking a bus, I decide to walk. Feeling the wind tangle my auburn locks, I speed walk around the city.

I like to think that my feet and those handy Yelp stickers found in sometimes the most random of places - will lead me to new adventures and on exciting turns.

My cheap flip-flops did not let me down today. Heading down busy Van Ness, I spied Wayo Sushi. It was empty, but the beaming red Yelp sticker beckoned me inside.

The adorable couple working, who I'm assuming are the owners, greeted me right away, with big real smiles. The kind of smile that make the eyes twinkle.

I sat down and began skimming the menu. Wayo's sushi selection is fairly basic, but what's unique about their selection, is that they even offer brown rice sushi rolls. Great, if you're looking to stay away from over-processed white rice.

I ordered the mango-crab roll, the shrimp tempura roll, and the avocado roll. The mango was so creamy and fresh, and the crab has not an ounce of fishy taste. The avocado was buttery and with the brown rice - tasted both "healthy" and delicious.

The sushi chef, was so quick and each roll rolled with love, that I found it hard not to bask in both the attention and warm atmosphere that moved around the place. Him and his wife, kept on eagerly looking over at me to see if I needed anything else, and to make sure I was enjoying my meal.

When chefs really care and invest themselves in their food, it's hard not to enjoy it. You can't help but taste their time and devotion.

Great little place! My friend brought me here since she lives about 2 blocks away.

The menu is pretty concise, which is perfectly fine with me. It can be quite exhausting at some other places to have to go through an extensive list of bob's roll, mary's roll, joe's roll, shaniqua's roll...only to see that the difference lies in the garnish. Concise menu also means that the chef's gotta be specialized...resulting in quick and delicious sushi! yum yum!~

Nothing's really out of the ordinary here. You get what you expect and there's no crazy surprise fusion secret sauce or over-the-top presentation. We had ordered a few rolls but what really stood out was the Sea Fairy Roll...which is fresh scallop on a california roll(?). I love, love, love fresh scallop. Oh, it was so tasty! it's hard enough to find a place that even offers scallops, alone having to find it fresh. Wayo earned my 5th star there.

I would definitely come back here again. Like everyone else has mentioned, sushi can be simple. At Wayo, there's fresh fish (& scallops), a seasoned chef and great service...all at a reasonable price. Can't ask for much more.

Went here with my brother on my first visit to San Fran and ended up having a great dinner on a quiet Sunday night. The atmosphere isn't by any means the best point, as it was sparsely decorated and rather plain. There aren't many tables at all and the sushi bar isn't all that big so I expect this place to have big waits on busy nights.

With that said, the food was really tasty and quite filling for roughly twenty bucks a head. We tried the Dragon roll, the rainbow roll, and the salmon sashimi and then added a salmon roll at the end. The pieces of salmon sashimi were cut big and very fresh and the eel was delicious on the Dragon roll. Out waitress paid just the right amount of attention to us, and, even though we arrived somewhat late, wasn't in a rush to get us out at all.

It'd probably be a good date place because its not really that loud and pretty casual; unless of course you're looking for a loud place so you don't have to listen to your date mindlessly tell you about themselves ;).

Sushi Nazi!

We were kicked out of the restaurant. Ok not that extreme but the chef/owner told us he couldn't service our group of 4 for FORTY minutes cuz he had 3 other tables. Literally the restaurant was only 30% full and he couldn't take us in.

I do want to go back but I think I need to have exclusive rights to the place to get served.

Beware if you're the 8th customer.

Wayo is good.  Quite good.  And they are cheap!  Quite cheap.  And the rice, if you like, is brown. Quite...brown.

These are the things you really need to know about Wayo, the rest is just window dressing.  But here you go anyway: this is no-frills neighborhood sushi joint that doesn't offer much in the way of atmosphere, but they make up for it in value. You're not going to get the Cherry Blossom Double Decker Firecracker roll here, but they've got all the nigiri and maki basics covered.  Their one foray into the exotic is a series of mango rolls they have on special (and have had on special for many months now).  All of these rolls will run you $3-$5.  Not bad at all.  And as mentioned, you can have any of your rolls with brown rice which may be sushi sacrilege but hey, it's a good way to healthy your dinner up a bit and they taste just fine.

Every time I've been there the staff has topped out at 2 people: a chef and a waitress.  So, if when you walk in there are a lot of people, you may end up waiting a while.

So while this place won't blow you away with creativity, it's tasty, inexpensive and a great go-to Tuesday night sushi spot.

This is one of my new favorite restaurants in San Francisco.

Thankfully, I live close enough to this place that I can call it my neighborhood sushi joint. It's authentic, relatively cheap and tasty. The same one guy prepares all the sushi, so an appetizer is recommended if you've got a burning hole in your stomach. But really, if you've got a burning hole in your stomach maybe dining out shouldn't be your primary point of focus...

Quiet. Romantic. Warm. I bring everyone I want to impress here and liquor them up with hot sake.

(Yes, I brought my mom here too.)

Nice little place, very authentic, very simple, quite cheap. We had to wait 45 minutes for food on a Sunday evening (6pm) though -- the place was nowhere near full, but it's just the one chef and the one waitress.

The brown rice sushi was pretty tasty, worth a try. The thing is.. it was good and I appreciate the simplicity about the place, but Sushi Time is still worlds better.

Bonus points to this place to being within walking distance.

Like others have said, you won't find this place featured in too many interior design award shows.  It's pretty humble inside, but not dirty or sloppy.

The food here is pretty good.  I had a couple different kinds of sushi.  I'm not Mr. Sushi, but I do like it every now and then.  The meat was tasty and tender, and presented well on the dish.  The prices are pretty reasonable too, and service was friendly.

I'd go here again.

This place is wonderful. Great service and great quality food - love it! Their rolls are simple but delicious, and the focus is on the fish. The seaweed salad doesn't taste like it has been refrigerated for days. The miso soup is flavorful and tastes like it might be spiked. I love leaving here feeling satisfied and still healthy, and not like I just inhaled a jar of mayo.

Something that I noticed the other night: I ordered a Rainbow Roll and the pieces of fish that were on it were noticeably smaller than previous Rainbow Rolls from Wayo. Actually, they were the smallest pieces of I've ever seen on a Rainbow Roll. To top it all off, there were only 3 kinds of fish on the roll (2 pieces each), as opposed to a different piece of fish per piece of sushi. I'm confused? It was still fresh and satisfying though so I'm not too disappointed.

You Yelpers are going to hate to see this, but yes...we tourists invaded your neighborhood sushi spot. Remember, though, you reviewed it, so it's all your fault!

Anyway, my boyfriend and I were delighted to see such a highly rated sushi place within walking distance of our hotel, so we hoofed it over on a Wednesday night and were shocked to find the place empty at 630pm. We were also shocked to hear "Let It Snow" playing on the stereo in July, but we won't go there.

The food was fantastic. No, it doesn't have a huge selection but everything was fresh. We loved the laid back atmosphere, and we also loved that the waitress gave us huge glasses of wine whenever we ordered one. See, in Utah the glasses we got would easily count as two drinks.

If I ever make it back to SF, I'm heading straight to Wayo.

Got my sushi on at Wayo last night and was made into an instant fan!

A buddy of mine has been wanting to go for awhile, and I had been running by it for months on my way back from the gym, so it was about time we made the visit.

Don't let the size of the place deceive you. Wayo packs a serious sushi punch.

You can tell instantly from the menu that this isn't a place where funky rolls are the highlights. Wayo is about the fish and the genuine art of traditional nigiri which focuses on the fish. Definitely a breath of fresh air and a reminder of why Sushi Rock is simply trash.

I ordered multiple nigiri pieces, and a few specialty rolls. While it does take a bit to get your order ( about 20 minutes with the place being a little less than half full) it was worth the wait.

The sake and maguro pieces just melted in your mouth. Soft, buttery, and the dash of wasabi under the sushi hood made the pieces fly off the plate. Incredible.

The service was great, and while it's only 1 person, she does a fantastic job of staying on top of everyone's orders and wishes.

Will come back often and I have to say, I was a little hesitant to write this review because I'd like to keep it somewhat of a sushi secret. However, I have to give back to the Yelp community, because I for sure read your reviews on Wayo!

First of all, if you like really good, fresh sushi and sashimi with extremely good price, Wayo Sushi is the place to go to.

Be careful though,
do not come on weekend nights,
because this place is run only by a japanese couple.
the husband makes EVERY order from scratch while the wife serves the customers.

But it is very good sushi though!
they even have uni! and for an extremely good price! $5 for 2.
the rest of the sushi choices are always fresh too.

The place is kind of small,
but that's why I like it =)
Definitely one of the best local sushi restaurants!

MMMMMM......Wayo!!

Wayo Sushi has truly yummy food at reasonable prices...and this place is run by the hardest working man in show business.  Have you ever walked by Wayo during business hours and NOT seen chef Mamoru in there busting his hump??  His floors are so clean, you can eat off of them!  I think this is one of SF's true gem of local eateries.

...and Wayo is a prime example of why we should continue to eat out during these economic hard times...to support the local businesses that deserve our hard earned wages.  One person commented on Wayo's "amateur" sushi.  Are you kidding me??  Mamoru spent many years in Japan as a finely trained sushi chef, just ask him about it.  The quite man is really quite friendly and talkative when he's not too busy creating the customer's orders.  He serves food we love...in San Francisco.  It is both authentic and delicious.  If you want more authentic, go to Japan.
