Yes, they are in a strip mall, like 95% of everything around here. They are detached (have their own building), and right in front on the street, so it's easy to spot as you drive by. There's a McDonalds on one side and a KFC on the other, so that would normally turn a lot of people off, but I was willing to take the risk (I have eaten Sushi in Idaho...so yeah, not too scared).

I went on a Tuesday night with a friend of mine and the place was EMPTY except for the two of us. There was the waitress and the chef, that was it. One guy came in near the end of our meal to pick up a to-go order, otherwise it was very peaceful. I would expect they are probably busier on other nights, but this was a Tuesday, so I'm not surprised.

The fish was fresh and excellent. They don't have much variety, but what you get is delicious. I had a rice bowl with three kinds of Sashimi on top (tuna, salmon, yellow tail) and they did NOT skimp on the fish! The waitress was a little MEH...not super friendly, or super helpful, or she might have just been very shy. But then I don't have the patience for a shy waiter (you should not be in that profession if being around new people makes you anxious!). The chef also was not very friendly, and he kept coming out of the kitchen to stand and watch a Soccer game on television.

But the food more than makes up for that, and I have a feeling they are more attentive when the place is more crowded.

The prices were extremely reasonable...comparable to Japantown in San Francisco. I think this is mine and my friend's new spot for affordable Japanese food on girl's night :)

Cute place in an empty strip mall.  I just ordered a teriyaki bowl, and the portions were big for its price.  My friends and I were the only ones there on a Sunday, so service was really attentive.  And my friends were satisfied with their entrees.

I recommend this place and definitely would go back.

living here for the past four years i've always passed by wayne's and laughed a little. how good could a sushi place called "wayne's" be? its not in the best location. and the building looks like a major buzz kill on the outside. i judged. i admit it. but after reading all of the great reviews i decided to give it a chance last night and i'm glad i did!

nevermind what it looks like on the outside, the inside is really cozy and cute. i ordered the two item combination for $11, and had maybe 8-10 items to choose from, and came with a huge side salad and miso soup. my spicy tuna roll and tempura were delicious. and the complimentary green tea was a major plus.

i love leaving a place feeling satisfied and not overly full, i'm so glad i gave wayne's a chance because i'll definitely be back!

Staff is friendly and helpful, but often mess up to-go orders. Never met Wayne. Last 2 times we've visited, our soup was not included in our bag(s). Food was basic, nothing special. House salad included with entrees is just shredded green cabbage with a generic dressing. Location has lots of parking and isn't much to look at on the outside (looks like it used to be a Taco Bell), but interior is cozy enough. Kitchen open to the eating area, similar to a taqueria vibe, so it does all seem a bit crowded and messy. Look to spend $5.50 for a California roll (6 pieces) and $11 for a chicken teriyaki plate with soup and salad. Rice is NOT included and is sold separately.

My son and I went to eat lunch at Waynes in RP on Saturday.  First, it took the young waitress 15 minutes to take our order. It then took another 30 minutes to get our food. The food was ok but nothing special.  Two items that we ordered were described as 'crab' on the menu were not crab at all but imitation crab. There was no hot oil and vinegar for the pot stickers, but I still haven't gotten to the bad part.

I gave my credit card to the waitress and she never came back. When I inquired, she said that the credit card machine was not working and I would have to pay cash. I told her I did not have $46 in cash. I told her that if her credit card machine was not working, we should have been informed when we came in. She said "I didn't know it wasn't working when you came in. You will have to wait until the credit card machine is working again."   I asked how long that would take. She said "I have no idea."   I told her I could write a check. She said "We don't take checks."   I told her I did not want to be held prisoner, so she said I could " leave my credit card number and my Driver's License number and she would run it through later."

I said, "Are you crazy?  I am not going to leave my credit card and driver's license numbers with a total stranger".

Finally, the chef, (I assume Wayne?)  said I could leave a check.

     I won't be back.

While there is no denying the quality was fine, the quantity was low - great if you are on a portion-controlled diet ;)

    We ordered:
    1) Grilled Prawns: 6 long & skinny (basically fat string beans).
    2) 2x Miso soup: standard size bowl
    3) Maguro Sashimi: 4 piddling pieces
    4) Teriyaki salmon: 3 2-bites-each steaks
    5) Beef skewers: they were out of skewers so we got strips

    total damage to wallet: $45

P.S. if you use http://Restaurant.com be sure to read the fine print or else you will get saddled with more than you bargained for.

I eat alot when we go out for sushi!! Its cute little place on Commerce Blvd... the owner Wayne is always there taking great care of his customers!! The food is always fresh and delicious!! They always have special rolls and if you asked for him to substitute a fish for another I am sure he would do it... he always makes california rolls for my daughter with no paper and gives her miso soup with no seaweed.. you must try!

Came here for lunch with a co-worker. The place is cute and small, not too many tables just enough to get by. I ordered the Wayne's Roll and Grilled Prawns, my co-worker ordered the TNT Roll. Both were really good, the Wayne's Roll had a nice spicy bite to it, the only complaint I have is I wish they'd put a little more sauce on the plate, it compliments the roll and there was barely any on my plate. My co-workers TNT roll was also nice and spicy, they do ask if you want it spicy or not and we're adventerous, we like it spicy! The fish was nice and fresh and the service was ok, nothing over the top but not bad either. The grilled prawn appetizer was ok, there wasn't much flavor to it, I ended up dipping it in my soy sauce and scrapping the sauce from my roll with it. If they added the sauce from the Wayne's roll on the side of the Grilled Prawns they'd have a HIT! All in all I wouldn't mind coming back and trying some of the other rolls and dinner options.

We really enjoyed our dinner here. Everything we ordered was tasty. The sushi rolls were properly rolled and the right size. The nigiri sushi fish topping could've been a touch bigger but mostly importantly, it was fresh and good. The three of us also shared an order of veggie tempura that was light and cooked just right. An unusual array of veggies gave this dish an interesting twist.

Service was a little slow but Wayne explained that his server was late for work and he was wearing all hats. He still did a decent job of juggling his duties and we didn't mind a few minutes extra wait. The food was worth waiting for and we will return to try more dishes in the future.

Wayne's was great and very reasonably priced. We ordered the GI Joe roll and the Wayne's roll, which were very fresh and huge! Wayne himself (I believe?) was friendly and likable; we could tell he really enjoys what he does. So yes, go to Wayne's and don't let the former Taco Bell bldg sandwiched between fast food restaurants divert you... it's beautifully decorated. Sorry, no drive-thru!

Yum yum yum!  I love this place.  The food is really GREAT for the PRICE.  Ambience is so so...but what would you expect...they had to work with an old Taco Bell building!  Maybe they could dim the lights a bit more during the evening?  Everyone that works there is so incredibly friendly.  I love the fact I can bring my 2 very young children there and they are treated like celebrities rather than scoffed at.  They always whip up something small for them and don't even charge...AND the babies gobble it up!

This is a family restaurant, not an upscale establishment so if you want an expansive menu with exotic options this is not the place for you.  However, if you and your buddies are looking for a casual bite with generous sake pours, or a parent who wants to find a sneeky way to get their kids to eat their vegetables, you won't be disappointed.

Well, this is probably the first time that a litany of good reviews mislead me, and lead me into a trap of gastronomical mediocrity. This food wasn't prepared with love or care, it was just kind of thrown together. Honestly, this isn't food that I couldn't have prepared myself for less money, and it would have tasted better.

I would hate to insinuate that the good folks of RP don't have very sophisticated or delicate palates (hence the disproportionate numbers of glowing reviews), but I guess that should have been my been my first clue. about this joint.

There are much better Japanese restaurants in the area that will leave you feeling more satiated and happy about spending money on the food.

Came in last night a half hour before closing time, honestly not expecting much because it's basically between McDonald's and KFC, and how great could it be in that location, right?  Plus it's called Wayne's.  I mean, I'm perfectly aware that not all Japanese people are named Hideo or Ichiro or something, but Wayne is pretty much the least Japanese name I could think of, so the idea amused me a little.

That being said, this place was really very good for what it was, and perhaps even better because you weren't expecting so much.  It was clean inside, plenty of space for each table.  Service was prompt and friendly.  We ordered an Alaska roll (salmon and avocado), a TNT (tempura shrimp, tuna, avocado, spicy sauce), Ebi nigiri, and tekka maki (tuna roll).

Here's where we get to the good part.  These rolls were, admittedly, slightly smaller than I normally see in sushi restaurants, but you know, we are really used to these gargantuan things you can't even get your mouth around these days, and these were simple, cleanly made, and very delicious.  The fish was definitely fresh and tasty.  Also I should note, the Ebi nigiri was NOT smaller than usual.  Here I got this small-size sushi plate with these HUGE flat, well-sauced pieces of eel.  Oh man it was delicious.

Total bill came to about $25, and I think this was more than fair.  Great job and now that I know where to come to get good, inexpensive sushi, I'll be back for sure!

Is it really any surprise that this restaurant is in an ex-Taco Bell building?

If this is 4 or 5-star sushi, then El Torito is 4 or 5-star Mexican food.  (And what's sad is that that statement will be lost on so many people).

IF YOU CARE MORE ABOUT QUALITY THAN QUANTITY/PRICE FOR YOUR SUSHI, TRUST ME, YOU'LL WANT TO READ THIS REVIEW.... so you don't waste your time going to Wayne's because of the 4-star average (which is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay generous)

If you're looking for traditional-style sushi owned and run by Japanese, this is not it.  If that's what you want, try Gohan (ironically Gohan is not run by Japanese, really, LOL, but it's definitely one of the best in the area) in Petaluma or Hana in Rohnert Park.  If you're a huge sushi snob like I am, please don't be fooled by all the good reviews.  If you can settle for any fish that isn't really that great or an Americanized roll and care more about price/quantity than quality, you will probably like this place.

Have to give Wayne credit for trying, but no.  Just no.  Again, if you don't have very much knowledge about how sushi is supposed to be made and love a California roll, you'll probably do fine here.  But if you really want a large selection of fish and perfectly made traditional-style nigiri, this is NOT, I repeat, this is NOT the place to go.

This is sub-par sushi.  The fish, on top of being not very good-tasting, is cut poorly.  The rice doesn't have the right ingredients AND ISN'T EVEN SHORT-GRAINED.  SUB-PAR.

We popped in with the BF's kids last night for dinner.  The sashimi plates were excellent.  The fish just melted in your mouth.

excellent attention from the staff, and they took great care of us and were very friendly with the munchkins as well.

two things we noticed (although not enough to take away a star)  1) there isn't any kid options on the menu.   Many of the other restaurants have a few items that are half portions for the chitlins.
    2) the rock and roll roll seemed smaller then I remember it being in the past.

She did bring us out extra miso and salad for the older one, because she thought she might enjoy it (she did!)

and let me just say I LOVE LOVE LOVE the "people on yelp love us" sticker stuck front and center in the middle of their window!

    The best things about Wayne's
    1. Walking distance from my house
    2. Fabulous Sushi
    3. Very reasonably priced for Sushi
    4. Staff are always awesome

I love sushi, I love Wayne's!!! Funky building, as it was an old taco bell or something, but you wouldn't know it from the inside. Great decor with out being to overdone. The sushi chef is great, as the rolls always stay together, the fish is never 'fishy' and its easy on the wallet. I brought my mom here for her first Sake bomb and the staff were really cool about it, not judging or anything. Wayne's will continue to be my fav in RP for sushi.

I have been wanting to come here for a while. I have heard from a number of people how fresh the fish is. Finally got the chance and WOW.

Came here yesterday and there was only one other couple in the whole restaurant. Probably seats around 40 people with little to no overdone sushi decor, big plus.

I ordered the Sushi Combo $15 with miso soup, salad, nine sushi roll slices (3 different options), six pieces of nigiri, two each of salmon, tuna and albacore.

Started with the miso soup, which didn't taste like packaged stock with a lot of salt. The salad had the right dressing mixture..not too much mayo which a lot of places do.

The sushi rolls and nigiri were so fresh...I have rarely had fish where when you bite down it separates so easily. I was amazed by the whole meal.

Most rolls were under $8 with the top being $14. Nice! Also they had wonderful friendly service and kept refilling my beer. That's enough for me. I am so proud that this place is only a few miles from my house. Already wanted to go back today!

It was just okay. Nothing Impressive. The deep fried oysters were really gross and really fishy - which can be a sign of that it is not fresh.  The food was decent, the miso bland.   I would rather spend a few more dollars and eat elsewhere. Honey cuisine on the other side of town is far better and has never disappointed.  We would have been there in a heartbeat if they weren't closed on Sundays.   I really don't see how anyone could give this place four let alone five stars.  I was so embarrassed that we brought our friend from out of town here. What a let down after all those good reviews.

This place isn't bad, though i'd rather go to Hana if i'm in Rohnert Park.

The prices are about the same as Hana, but the quality/quantity is a little lower. I'm not saying that Hana is all that great either though.

If this place dropped a couple bucks off of each item, they would probably do much better business, the service was really really good, but then again I was the only person in the restaurant until I finished my meal and some guy came in asking about take out.

I found Wayne's on Yelp, and it is my favorite restaurant in the area. My eight-year-old son and I are regulars, and the waitress knows what we'll have before we even sit down. He has two chicken skewers and a rootbeer and he steals my miso soup and salad. I have the chirashi bowl, which is a bowl with generously-sized pieces of fish on top of rice. The fish is fresh and tasty, and has been every time I've been there.
I go there with my boyfriend as well and he is allergic to -- but fond of -- shellfish. So one time I took the shrimp out of my chirashi bowl out of respect for him. The next time I came in some weeks later, they asked if I wanted no shrimp again. Who remembers stuff like that? They do.
I can't see myself becoming a regular at Hana, but Wayne's feels like home and it is my son's favorite place, too.

My son doesn't live nearby, so whenever he visits, we always set aside some father-son bonding time.  These times usually involve hiking, kayaking, food, wine, a great cigar or all of the above.

Since he is also a chef and absolute foodie, when we go out to eat, it's important that I pick places where I know he'll be proud of my culinary instincts.  That's why on this visit, I took him to Wayne's Grill & Sushi in Rohnert Park.

I've talked about the building's former tenant in my previous review, but I had forgotten my camera.  On this visit, I flashed away (at photo taking that is) resulting in several new uploaded photos for anyone to be able to get a better take on what the place looks like.

Now let's get to the substance of the review -- the food.

We were pretty hungry and so whenever hungry mongries go to a sushi place, it's best to look for combo plates -- more pieces and more selection for the price.

It's interesting that out of over 60 menu combinations, we both chose exactly the same one:  The Super Sushi Combo $15 with nine unagi and avocado sushi roll slices, six pieces of nigiri, two each of salmon, tuna and albacore.

After our order was placed, our very attentive waitress served us two complimentary appetizers which for a Japanese restaurant were unusual.  They were tempura dumplings, which is understandable, but they were filled with the most luscious chicken curry ever!  I mean these tasty treats were a better combo of curry with meat than in ANY Indian Restaurant I've ever been in.  The meal was off to a great start!

The main entree came next and it was plated and served like only a Japanese artist can do.  Perfection on a platter.  And the tastes ... my, oh my, oh my!  This sushi chef knows what he's doing!  Rice was perfectly sticky, fish was so fresh, there was not even a hint of fishiness and the eel --- oh my gawd!  I love that eel.

During our lunch, our waitress came by several times to fill our tea and after we were finished, she served us each a miniature puff pastry that looked like a delicate lotus blossom.  Inside was the creamiest and most melt-in-your-mouth goodness made from butter and eggs.

My son and I both walked out of the restaurant with satisfied tummies and he agrees that this is the best sushi he's ever had!

We've been searching for a good sushi place nearby that won't break the bank and had great tasting sushi, and we finally found it. We've been meaning to try this place for a while as we've driven by it several times, and I'm glad we finally did.

The service was friendly and expedient and the decor was very nice and inviting. I especially enjoyed the unexpected mix of music they were quietly playing in the background.

The sushi was excellent and fresh (I had the TNT Roll and Miso soup), and the soup was delicious and hot. The beef teriyaki was extremely tender and excellently prepared and seasoned. We will definitely be going back here regularly to sample the rest of the items on the plentiful menu.

So happy to have a good sushi place back in town.
The prices are very low but food is fresh and presentation is stellar. I had the TNT roll along with 2 orders of very fresh uni.  My 3 year old son had tempura shrimp & veggies with steamed rice pretty simple. The tempura was really shrimp and veggies breaded in panko and then deep fried but still good. My son devoured the meal along with a bowl of ice cream that was on the house. This place is one of the best Sushi restaurants in  Rohnert Park hands down.

I went to Wayne's Grill & Sushi with my sister on a Friday night, when we first got there it wasn't busy at all!

I was super surprised to see the old taco bell building to look different on the inside, it was well redecorated and had a nice touch, it had a bar sushi seating and about 10 tables. It's pretty small, but it's cute.

We were seated right away, which was nice. We both got iced tea, and it was really good! Our table was nicely set. The menu had a bunch of hand written changes but it wasn't too bad.  I got the Sushi $15 combo, you get miso soup, cucumber salad, your choice of California, spicy tuna or rock 'n roll roll, also with 6 pieces of nigri. (which is an awesome deal!!!) Although it seemed like enough for one, we decided to add a TNT roll, which has tuna, shrimp, and avocado, but we made some changes but some yummy changes. But you have to ask! We asked for shrimp tempura and make it spicy! It had the perfect balance of spicy. It was great!

You could also tell the miso soup was freshly made, as well as the cucumber salad, they were both fantastic! YUM! :) I'm not the biggest fan of nigri but it was pretty good. But about the time we were all done the restaurant was packed and we waited about 30 minutes for our check. I understand it was busy, considering there was one sushi chef and one waiter who was also the host. About 5 or 6 groups were turned down due to how busy they were, and the people that wanted to order food to go had to wait a while. The few tables that were larger got helped and left sooner than we did, being in the corner didn't help. Overall, it was delicious! I recommend going to Wayne's around 3 before everyone gets off work and come with their families. TNT is a must! :) If they brought us out check and if they had tempura ice cream it would've been 5 stars! Though it's the best in town!

I took my family out for my Mom's birthday and it was good my Mom and I got sushi rolls (Spicy tuna & rainbow) my husband and 2 year old had the beef teriyaki and my father and 1 year old had the chicken teriyaki.
As for the sushi rolls they were very good and fresh as well as good size.
The chicken and beef teriyaki however were very small portions my sons being only 1 & 2 finished all of theirs, my poor husband and father were still kinda hungry even with the soup, salad and rice that came with the meal.
The service was outstanding they were very friendly and attentive and we even got ice cream on the house for my Mom's birthday

    Dang.

Well, I ordered some to-go for dinner last night.  When Larry brought the bag in  the house, my maguro sushimi consisted of 4 small pieces.

I'm sincerely bummed.  I love sushi, and I really like Wayne and the gang, but whomever prepared my dinner last night cut me short.  WAY short.

    I am: disappointed.

    UPDATE:
I gave Wayne's another try tonight and am pleased to say the portions were worth the money this time.  Maybe the person making the to-go order last time was in a hurry and forgot to put in the full amount...

Wow!  Wayne's Grill & Sushi, located in a former Rohnert Park Taco Bell, is the find of the week - maybe the find of the month!  Absolutely excellent sushi.

I ordered the Alaska Makimono Sushi Roll with salmon and avocado ($5.50) and my sweetie ordered the TNT roll ($7.50) with shrimp, tuna and avocado. Perfection.

While we waited for our order to arrive, our server, a helpful and engaging Tim Lei, poured us tea and then proceeded to serve us a complimentary appetizer -- a small
tempura dumpling filled with ground beef.  Another tasty treat.

The decor and ambiance, while not romantic, still made me feel like I was dining in a classy place.  Hardwood flooring replaced Taco Bell tile.  The walls were painted a pale mint green and several pleasant prints adorned the walls. The window coverings, a sophisticated framed bamboo or perhaps reed. A comfortable and relaxing place to dine. Clean as well.

From appetizers to soup and salad, to nigiri, sashimi, makimono and main dishes served with soup, salad and rice, Wayne's Grill will be a repeat for me and my sweetie.  There's also an excellent drink menu ranging from sake, wine, beer and iced tea to soft drinks and orange juice.  And a dessert menu to boot.

The place is a must-try for sushi lovers, probably not the best offering for young children since most wee ones usually don't care for sushi and because the restaurant is small and quaint.

Probably my favorite sushi spot in Rohnert Park, and most likely in Sonoma County. No Name Salmon is to die for. The wait staff is extremely attentive and helpful. Excellent. That's pretty much all I have to say. Seriously, try it for yourself.

Giving this place two stars is me being generous. As a frequent sushi eater, I was not at all impressed. I ordered the Rainbow roll and the fish on top was not fresh. I know what fresh looks like and this was not it. As for the miso soup, it looked and tasted like it was out of a package. Again, not fresh. I was disappointed and I do not see how this place gets five stars. I will probably not return.

Been searching for a good Sushi place since I got out here from New York that won't empty out my pockets.  Wayne's has good sushi and is VERY reasonably priced.

The staff is very friendly and it has a very relaxing atmosphere, not crazy Japanesed out like other Sushi places, but nice and relaxing.

i went the other day with a friend, who is probably one of the pickiest eater I've ever met, and he asked for a roll that wasn't on the menu and the chef had no problem preparing it for him.  I thought it tasted great!!!!
