Really unique candle store. Creative and functional designs of candle, holders, etc....
A bit pricey, but it's a great place for gifts.
Candles with varying degrees of scent strength, Waxman Candles is an awesome shop with unique offerings. My favorites are the triple power variety, which come in a metal can. I do wish they were a bit cheaper, or bigger for the price but you're getting bang for the buck! Favorite scents right now are amber, and "earthen." I also bought a Frankincense/Myrh pillar, regular strength candle but was less than impressed. It needed more of that incense scent to smell the way I wanted it to smell. I can't wait til it's fall and I can get the fall like scents (they do sell them all year, but I usually only want to smell pumpkin and apples and the like from October on).
There is something for everyone here, by the way. A great place to go for gifts, as although "everyone loves a Yankee Candle," I think the offerings from Waxman are more impressive and the only other place you can get these besides Lawrence is in Chicago!
I really like Waxman candles, I think the rest of the reviews pretty much say everything in terms of availability/ambiance etc.
I guess my reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is I often cannot find something I want. I go in there eager to spend money and then there are no candles that I love. Yesterday I did find something for a Christmas gift exchange, but it was pretty non-specific. My Dad was looking for a lighthouse candle for a fanatic friend (I know - small chance) and they didn't have it and didn't think they could make it.
They also have a Waxman in Chicago. It makes me happy to have a little bit of Lawrence in Illinois!
I still really like Waxman, just holding off on the 5 stars
There are candles, and there are Waxman candles. For great smelling, cool looking candles, nobody beats this Lawrence landmark. Waxman has moved around, but their reputation for great candles has remained steady.
The hardest thing about Waxman Candles is burning them! I have a Jayhawk candle and a cool winter scene sphere both of which are from there that I've never had the heart to light. Luckily Waxman also sells plain-looking scented candles that you can burn with no remorse.
This is a whimsical, hippie candle store not for the conservative or faint of heart. Waxman puts it all out there, from genre defining candles, gender identifying candles (check out my pic of the male/female molds), or just sweet little shapes or styles.
I love how you can see their workshop from the front of the store--just makes it feel like an open studio setting. Also, the people who work here are just as hip as the candles (as it ought to be!) and nice smelling too :)
I loved how Waxman sells plain candles too that are more affordable, but just as nice.
Sure, it seems cliche to give candles as gifts (it's always that backup gift option for if you don't know what to give someone), but these would definitely make somebody happy (even if you don't know them).
This place keeps me coming back to Lawrence, although there are plenty of reasons to go.
I discovered this place when my sister was attending KU and have been addicted ever since. They make a quality product. Scented, double scented, unscented, tapered, votive, pillar......You can even bring in a container and they will fill it with a candle. I have had pillars custom poured and they turned out great. While not the cheapest, in this case you get what you pay for.
If you don't live in Lawrence, it is worth the trip.
This place has the finest candles made by hand I have encountered worldwide! I used to live in Lawrence and would love to shop here for all my candle needs.
They do it all and cater to custom orders. Their candles pack the most scent even when they're not lit!
I think I might need to purchase some via their web site since it's been far too long I've had the wonderful experience of enjoying these. Waxman is highly recommended in my book. Now if I could only find a comparable place here in NYC...
You can definitely buy cheaper candles elsewhere, but why would you do that?
Honestly, after buying votives here, other candles have been mostly disappointing. My Waxman candles have lasted longer, smelled better, and melted smoothly. They have a fantastic array of scents, colors, sizes, and shapes. I burn the votives at work because they smell great without giving me a headache, as other candles - I'm looking at you, Yankee Candle Co - are wont to do. My all-time favorite is the green tea scent, but I always check the seasonal votives too - they have some excellent ones around Christmastime.
I cannot agree heartily enough with the first reviewer- Waxman candles are THE BEST. I moved away from Lawrence after college, but have since been using their website to shop for my candles- they are simply the best candles. ever. in the world. period.
My favorite is the prairie flower pillar candles- they smell amazing and have actual pressed flowers visible on the outside of the candle.
Their seasonal candles are gorgeous, as are the multi-layered candles.
A trip to Waxman is definitely worth it if you're in the area!
i have bought some of the best candles from waxman. very aromatic, slow-burning and long-lasting. lots of scents to choose from and they are handmade. also lots of cute candle holders and home decor there. when i lived in kansas i would get my incense from there. love the smell of the place. and the location is great!
I'm not even a candle person and I love this place. The candles are amazing - they smell great and seem to last longer. There is an amazing variety also. The store caters to both the traditional and the funky. I'm also a fan of the candle holders because they are different - it's real creativity you won't find at your everyday home decor store. The staff is also great and really helpful.
I don't know how they do it, but Waxman sells the best smelling candles ANYWHERE (and I've sniffed my share, believe me!) They have a rotating collection of votives, of course, but they also make fantastic and funky candles, too - twisted, melted, and shaped in every form imaginable. You can spend an hour just smelling stuff, easy. The hard part will be deciding which scents you like best! Highly recommended, but beware: once you start, you'll be hooked.
