I toured Wattles Mansion when I was looking for a place to hold my wedding. Located up a narrow street above Hollywood, the mansion is a beautiful venue. It was built in the early 1900s and became a historical landmark in the 1980s. It's been restored and really showcases all the grace and glamour of a bygone era. The interior space of the mansion is actually quite small. The rooms are paneled in gorgeous old wood, but they're small and don't flow into each other well, as tends to be typical of older houses. If you wanted to use the indoor space, it'd be best if you had a smaller guest list for your wedding. However, when you step out the back door an amazing garden opens up in front of you, complete with terraced levels, a rose garden and stairs leading up to a very romantic ceremony location. I absolutely loved this area and think it would be a very memorable place to get married. There's also a large, sloping front lawn with a nice view of the city.
Pros: Beautiful and historic location, scenic garden ceremony spot, ability to have ceremony and reception in one place.
Cons: You have to bring in everything (rentals, catering, valet, etc.) and that can be a lot of work; Music is not allowed outside at night due to neighbors and the dancing space indoors is very limited; indoor spaces are small so if it rains and you have a lot of guests, they're going to get wet.
We didn't end up choosing Wattles Mansion for our wedding location, but it was one of the most beautiful places we toured.

Maybe you need reservations to visit the Gardens and Mansion? Because we sure as hell couldn't get in.
This place has a lot of old punk history, as it was a big hangout once all the punks got kicked out of the Hollywood Cemetery around 1980 or so. There's some pictures floating around of Tomata DuPlenty (the Screamers) having his birthday party here. As a punk historian, I think stuff like that is cool.
Nowadays it's just a narrow run down park surrounded by rich Hollywood Hills homes. I'd love to come here with a group of people, as maybe it gets more interesting once you head further up in the hills? As it were, I was alone with my girlfriend, and it felt like we would be raped and murdered at any second. No cell phone service, nobody around except the groups of voices you can hear but not see.
I'd definitely go back if people wanted to explore with me, but I'm not really in any hurry to get back there and hang out.

I'm really confused, where is the community garden? There was a bunch of brush and a long, narrow, grass corridor of a lawn extending for acres on the property. The palm trees aligning the stretch of the lawn looked really cool at sunset and walking on the pathways with the weird columns on either side give the same effect too. It's a great park if you have a dog but if not, just kind of an odd park/garden at best.
I ventured past the Japanese pagoda area and through the entryway where the park suddenly turns into brush, dirt, trees everywhere, graffitied rocks and strange architectural ornaments protruding out of the dirt. It's seriously a weird area and it's kind of spooky and scary. I guess the LA punk scene claimed the area as a squatting/hang out spot in the 70's and 80's which is cool but it's a strange.

A community garden with avocado and citrus groves, and whose members have seasonal potlucks? In Los Angeles? I am delirious.
I hardly ever Yelp these days. Too many voices compel us to buy and to wield our power as consumers. Am I the only one to remember how Americans were called upon to show the post-9/11 world their Indomitable Spirit by taking to the streets to shop? I am so much more than my purchasing power -- granted, I don't have much purchasing power to dispose of these days. But that's besides the point.
Take these lessons home:
Get out more. Realize that reality, the one offering so many more pleasures than those bought and sold ... or seen on television. Make the acquaintance of fellow gardeners in your neighborhood. Get dirty. Grow more.
