The price is definitely right for the quality at Waterstone. Haley gave me a haircut as good as one that I got for 100 dollars in San Francisco for much, much less.
The atmosphere is great, the store is clean, and the location is very convenient. I will definitely be coming back here in the future. -

For Kristin Yarmer at Waterstone Aesthetics, doing hair isn't a job, or a career. For her it's a calling; the woman was blessed with a gift, and what she does with hair is pure magic.
Since I met Kristin and handed my insanely damaged and color treated hair over to her we have gone from one end of the color spectrum to the other. We've done highlights, lowlights, single and double processes, trims, full cuts, layers, and everything else imaginable in the world of hair. The thing I love about Kristin is that when you come in for an appointment, she not only listens to what you want and evaluates what you need, but she views your hair objectively, like an architect viewing a structure needing renovation. Like a mad scientist, she sees what isn't there but could exist, perfectly and beautifully, in the future.
Just the other day, while combing her fingers through my hair, she informed me that we were going to do my hair in "quadrants"...blocks of red, dark brown, and little sections of yellow. For a simple girl like me, I looked at her with wide eyes and said "Lady, I can't for the life of me see where you're going with this, but I trust you". I left the salon with the most epic, stunning hair ever. If there's one bad thing about Kristin, it's that she'll turn you into a vain bitch who can't ever put her mirror away.
And though I could rave forever about her endless talents, abilities, and knowledge, it isn't just what she can do with hair that keeps me coming back. From the moment you meet Kristin, you know you've met a true, loving soul. As most ladies know, a new hair-do can take up to three hours or more to complete; in all the hours I've spent with Kristin there has never been a dull moment. She is a great listener, and great talker, and alway has a funny story to tell. Combine all of this with complementary wine that the salon provides and you've got yourself what I consider a fabulous time. Her prices are beyond reasonable, especially considering what she can do, and the salon itself is calm and serene.
But like I told Kristin the other day, even if she was working out of a sewer and charging a thousand bucks I'd still never dare go to anyone else. Because a good hair-do isnt just about looking good- it's a statement about who you are, it's about feeling good, it's about having confidence in yourself and your beauty. Time and time again Kristin has guided me from a dull hair cut and a bummer attitude, to a vibrant look with an even more electric, take on the world mindset. Plain and simple, hair just isn't something you can skimp on, and Kristin is the best of the best. -

So, after being burned by Birds too many times, I decided to find myself a good stylist at a decent price. I couldn't pass up the multitude of 5-star reviews here on Yelp, so I called to find that Haley was right in my price range of perfect. My hair had turned into somewhat of a shag, it wasn't even symmetrical (thanks, Birds) and my color had turned to brassy brassy terribleness. I scheduled a cut and lowlight with no problem (great assistance from the front desk AND the owner!) and they even offered a free consultation before I scheduled!
Haley took a few minutes at the start of my appointment to check my hair type, natural color, and to really see what I wanted out of a haircut. My hair is super fine and healthy, so she suggested doing razor-cut layers for more movement and volume. She also noted that my natural color was actually a shade darker than I'd thought, so she picked darker lowlights to try and get me back to where I wanted. A month later, and my hair looks FABULOUS. The lowlights haven't gone brassy and the bangs and layers are growing out amazingly well. I'm going to schedule another lowlight next month to continue getting rid of the leftover brassy color. She took her time, was super conversational, and was very receptive to my not-very-detailed desires. AND, the foil lowlight, wash, cut, and style was $95 -- cheaper than Bird's and 30x better!!
The salon is beautiful, clean, and well run. They even offer you wine! I am never looking back after this place. And neither will you! -

As a costumer of 3 years to Waterstone, I only have good things to say about the company. A Friendly and professional staff make your salon experience very enjoyable and relaxing. Also, Waterstone offers the BEST deals for their services!
Recently I have seen their stylist HALEY Macmillan...
She has done a great job both cutting/styling and coloring my hair. I'm not good at knowing exactly what I want when I come in, and Haley always takes the time to talk it over with me to make sure I get what I want. She's been helping me lighten my reddish-dark hair and put in the most BEAUTIFULLY colored highlights. My friends commented on my hair saying that it looked like the coloring of a Tiger's eye stone. ( Don't try that at home..) I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a dresser! -

People NEVER review the front desk assistance in salons. They listen to you verbally juggle your schedule, and if they're good (like AMANDA at Waterstone) they make you smile before you even walk into the place.
Along the similar vein as the Avant empire; Waterstone is swiftly building a mecca of beauty moguls. It's getting hard to discern which stylist is more talented, gracious, wonderful, and skilled. Best to just call Amanda & have her get you scheduled for whenever you're ready to be beautiful.1 Previous Review: Show all »

They do have an amazing front desk -- I called and got an appointment for 16 minutes later -- and they were totally okay with that!
Haley is great -- extremely flexible and sensitive to my very vague whims. She didn't seem in a rush at all, unlike so many other hairdressers.
Also, their have quite a price range -- even though some of the reviews on here are like "oh it's so expensive" you should just call and find yourself one of the cheaper stylists. -
Review from Leslie L.
I've never been to a more punctual stylist than Jon D. The most I've ever been kept waiting for him was 5 minutes. That has to be a world record when talking about stylists and salons. Jon's been cutting hair for 18 years and apparently has become extremely good at budgeting his time, something I very much appreciate as a client. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Jon D. is the highly talented and mustachioed stylist I've been going to for the past several months. I came to him with a bob I wanted to grow out, and he made the transformation way more stylish than I expected. At first I was afraid the cut he gave me might be a little *too* hip. But after a little time with my first Jon D. cut, I realized what a good cut it was. The cut grew out beautifully and he won me over as a loyal client. $75 plus tip for a haircut.
Bonuses: he gives free bang trims in between cuts, the salon owner is incredibly nice, ample parking right outside the door of the salon, sweet staff members -

I badly needed color correction because my last stylist left my hair lemon yellow with carrot highlights after 2 tries. I have engagement photos tomorrow and I took a gamble coming to see a new stylist. Michael listened as I explained what I would like my hair to look like. He was interesting and laid back, and I left smiling with ash-blonde hair that looked natural and flattering. I couldn't stop smiling after Michael blow-dried my hair. I will be back to see him for cut and color in the future! After seeing my new hair, my sister-in-law already plans on going to him in the future.
Also, this salon has a clean stylish environment complete with a beautifully done mural by a local artist. The sinks are actually padded so it is comfortable when your hair is getting washed. -

Understand, I am not a girly-girl. In most areas of my life I pull greasy hair into a ponytail, and come home from a dirty job with grease and metal filings caked under my nails. Think Rosie the Riveter, but minus the cute scarf and lipstick. Which makes me appreciate Kristen Yarmer and the folks at Waterstone that much more, because I've never felt that out-of-place feeling I've had other places.
I've been seeing Kristin Y. for cuts and color for probably 4 or 5 years, I actually followed her when she left her last salon to join Waterstone and I'm so happy she made the move!! She's always done an amazing job, but the whole experience is just that much more pleasant with the front desk staff, the relaxing environment, the fun music, it's all perfect!
I have long, thick heavy hair and Kristin is the first person to ever give me the real layers I've asked so many others for. Over the years she has given me exactly what I asked for, but also knew the right way to refine my request into something more flattering or suitable for me. She has a direct approach (like the time she said my hair was getting too long. I scoffed, and she said it was porn-star hair, and it was not a good look on me. I let her shorten it.) so you"ll get an honest opinion, but you know there's no BS.
Kristen's color skills are crazy. I've always wanted unnatural reds and purples, like something out of a comic book, and I could do that myself or in many other places, but she has a knack for making what I want still compliment my skin tone and she considers what it'll look like over the months it'll take me to get back in for a refresh. The result is awesome rock star hair that fits me perfectly; that I get compliments on from people of all walks of life; that still looks gorgeous when it's fading and grown out.
No, the cost is not dirt cheap, but the trade off for me is worth every penny. Where else can you call for an appointment after a 3 or 4-month hiatus, and the receptionist recognizes your voice, remembers what kind of service you probably are due for, gives you a reminder call a few days before, and truly beams when you walk in? If that all happens before you even sit down, you know the stylist will be stellar and Kristen always is! -

I have followed Michael Fenner around town for 5 years! Why? He gives me a great hair cut, whether I want it short or long, neat or shaggy. For men's haircuts, he should be recognized as one of the best in Austin. He doesn't require precise instructions because he knows what he is doing and has a great eye. Plus he is an interesting and fun character, who has turned me on to a lot of great music. The friend who first recommended me to Michael now lives in Chicago but still returns to Austin when she can for a haircut with Michael. Waterstone is also a very nice salon, with good people, a convenient location and a relaxed atmosphere.

Jon d Jon d Jon d!!! I love me some Jon d!
I have always been THAT girl that never could find a stylist/ master hair artist most likely because I have never really knew what the heck I want done with my hair and definitely wasn't capable of articulating what I might have in mind...in other words, I hadn't found someone to read my mind or just make my mind up for me...until Jon d. I've now been a fan of his for almost 6 years.
I LOVE my hair every time I leave.
As for the salon- I like it too. -

waterstone is beautiful, clean, and the people are so freaking nice... i really can't say enough about it. tim is so thorough in his explanations, and really enjoys his job, so it's fun to go see him. he remembers me and the things we talked about weeks ago. it's very personal. he really cares about making customers comfortable and happy. and i get that feeling from the whole place. the girls at the front are young and gorgeous, but not at all pretentious, the way other salons close to campus can be. they're really complimentary and hospitable.
i've really only ever had to wait once, but it gave me a chance to people watch, and everyone in the place was smiling and happy. and that's how i feel when i leave waterstone: smiling and happy. -

I have an interview tomorrow and I was in desperate need of a haircut, as mine had grown into a lion's mane ... seriously.
I'm not from Austin but I've lived here for 4 years and I have yet to find a stylist that fits my needs ... simply because it really is hard to take that leap. But when it came down to this situation, I had to pick somewhere ... and every other salon was booked/overpriced or both.
It was awesome to find Waterstone Aesthetics from none other than Yelp! My stylist was Amy who was super nice and did an amazing job. My hair looks so much better, I can't even tell you. Not only did she cut it, but she made sure it was perfect. And she used product in my hair that made it look even better!! For the price of $45, I'd say this haircut was worth so much more ... but a great deal nonetheless!!!
And also, today is her birthday and the salon's 1st anniversary so happy birthday amy and happy anniversary waterstone! :) -

I decided to donate my hair to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program which meant I was going to suck it up and enter the realm of short hair. Da da duuuuuuuum!
I followed my stylist, Jon D., to WaterStone, where he recently moved. Opened in November-ish, it's conveniently located by Mangia in the new G31 building or whatever ridiculous name the builders opted for.
Waterstone offers a TON of services that appeal to housewives (Botox), hipsters (edgy cuts) and teens (acne treatments) alike. All under one roof.
Had a great experience with friendly staff and the always entertaining Jon D. His cuts are $75 which I'd happily pay just for the phenomenal neck and scalp massage. Just thinking about it makes me want to meltttttttt...
Anyway: the other stylists kept popping by to comment on my cut and the relaxed vibe of the place was awesome. I liked that you could see other clients from your chair; the chick diagonal to me was getting a full-on mullet! No joke. The salon was beautiful and brand spankin' new. Pretty sure they use Bumble and Bumble.
I left rejuvenated, sans-mullet and about 10 pounds lighter. All for a great cause. That spells a win-win in my book! -

Jon D is a Master designer in the art of hair. I've been a client of Jon's for some time now, I always leave his chair looking my best. He is talented in designing a style that works for the individual and their lifestyle. Yes, he'll guide through which products will help create the look at home which I find very helpful. Oh, and did I mention his therapeutic scalp and neck massage...be prepared to be indulged.
You can find Jon D at Waterstone Aesthetics, a fabulous salon with friendly service, Zen decor, and easy parking. -
Review from Sydney T.
I promised myself that I would wait until my hair grew out before writing my review. But it's been a week, I still LOVE my cut, and I break promises to myself all the time (cough*newyearsresolution*cough), so here we go.
After shopping around quite a bit, I can say that WaterStone is definitely a standout salon in Austin. I called and described my hair, which is tricky to cut, and the receptionista put me with Michael. I want to point out that I was given accurate pricing on the phone, up front. Having been quoted and charged differently at other salons in town, this meant a lot to me. Now I will admit that Michael is a little pricey if you're used to $13 haircuts, (which I am, because I am poor) but please take it from me - he is WORTH IT.
I work late, so I got his last appointment of the day (7PM). When I arrived (a tad early) I was surprised to find the salon still going strong. Everything was neat and clean (including the floor) and I was offered a drink.
Michael was finishing up another gal, so his assistant took me over for a consult with Michael and then shampooed my hair. 1) What stylist that *I* can afford has an assistant?? 2) He was still energetic, if a little bitchy about having to work in the probable-snow the next day. I don't know about you, but I am not chipper after I've been working all day, so kudos to him. 3) The consult was so wonderful. I had been in a rush that morning and not blown out my hair completely, and so was sporting my usual awkward half-wave. Rather than be like "oh my god what happened to your hair", Michael immediately said "you have good wave, let's see if we can play that up." And then...he delivered. To backtrack a little, he asked me first what I wanted (my response was "hell I dunno, something easy?") and then proceeded to work his artistic genius.
Ok, let me just make the point here that he is NOT gentle - my ears got combed, my tangles got jerked, my head got jerked around, and the brush scratched my scalp. Again, it was completely worth the results.
I rarely (ok, never) wax poetic about a haircut, but THIS guy is pure MAGIC (I don't care what Randy Travis says about Moon River). The layers softened my face so perfectly, it's like he KNEW what I was envisioning but couldn't articulate! He worked quickly, but accurately, and didn't stop until HE thought everything was perfect.
I was extremely pleased when I left the salon, but also wary to see whether my laziness could replicate in 15 mins of blowout what he had just spent an hour producing. Which brings me to star number four: when I do my hair in the morning, I can make it look JUST like Michael did. Ok, not JUST, but good enough that people actually say "hey your hair looks good!' GUY people even say this to me. Guy people who are not my husband who doesn't count because he loves me no matter what (right?)
Also, I let it air dry one day (one of the rare ones when it was above freezing) and it produced the cutest little wave! It was almost like it happened on purpose! This gives me new hope for the summer laziness of air-dried hair.
Honestly, the only reason Waterstone doesn't get five stars is that I just flat can't afford to go back every 4-6 weeks for full price. But don't let that keep you from going. Someday, Michael, I will have that rockstar job that pays out the wazoo, and then my dear, I will come to you every day for a blowout. That's how much I love my new haircut. -

I followed Jon D. to Waterstone from Method. Jon D is a great stylist and I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great cut. As a bonus, he gives the most amazing scalp massages during shampoo ever!

I would definitely recommend Waterstone and Jon D in particular to anyone looking for a new salon and stylist. -

I recently had my highlights done by Ana lopez, recommended by John D( the only person I'd let come near my hair with scissors),both at Waterstone.
She exceeded my expectations.I have had many bad experiences with colorists that do not know how to properly enhace dark hair. Ana was not one them, probably because she has dark hair also. She was professional, full of suggestions, bubbly, and fast. My hair turned out great! I'm so happy! -

Everything would have been amazing if my jaw didn't drop at the sight of the bill. I am of course to blame for not calling ahead and finding out the price for a very quick simple men's haircut, but at the same time I feel that the YELP $ sign system was grossly undervalued for this establishment.
My haircut looks like a good haircut, one that my $20 barbershop gives me and certainly one that a $40-50 Aveda Hair salon would provide as well.
I cannot stress the importance of being blow off my feet when faced with a $70 haircut. I have had my hair cut by professional "movie" stylists before and I can say that the result for much less was just the same as WaterStone.
The ONLY reason I went there was because of the stellar Yelp reviews, and that I needed to get a nice hair cut for a special occasion. Little did I know that it would be so much for a average hair cut.
I am sure that if your hair requires more attention and you get other services on top of a haircut the price all makes sense, but for the guys, if you need to get your hair done for a special event and you are willing to spend even twice as much that a regular barber, just go Aveda and avoid anything over 50 bucks.Comment from Tim U. of WaterStone Aesthetics 3/4/2011

When I was new to Austin, I really needed to get my hair cut and colored. I went to a place that will remain unnamed and was sorely disappointed with both. However, after a quick scan of Yelp reviews on salons, I chose to try out Waterstone and got an appointment with Ana, who I just adore. She is so funny! I love to chit chat with her while she does her magic because she is interesting and we always have something to talk about. She makes you feel at ease and comfortable. Also, she is so, so good at her job! Not to brag, but I am used to getting compliments on my hair, but after the botched job at the unnamed salon, those were out the window. Not when Ana finished with me! I get stopped on the street now with people asking who does my hair. I am only too happy to tell them Ana at Waterstone.
Waterstone itself is relaxing and I look forward to every visit. Can't wait for my next appointment! -

If you are a GUY with CURLY hair this is the place...
I visited yelp to find the best MEN"S haircut. I narrowed it down to a few salons, but after reading the stylist bios at the Waterstone website I choose Joel Hamburger.
He said he likes texture and working with CURLS. so i made an appointment with an open mind. He talked with me, consulted with what i wanted, and added his input on what would work best for me. He listened and then worked with me to give a versatile, workable new look. can i tell you that after a week of people complimenting me on my hair i have to say ----
BEST CUT OF MY LIFE!!!!!!
JOEL HAMBURGER knows CURLY HAIR!!!!
---update---
wow so after two great visits i had the shock of a lifetime. On the 3rd visit he told me that the prices with be going up 25.00, but he will charge me the same price today since i didn't know. I will pay up to 75.00 for a good cut, but that will include 20.00+ tip. sorry man but you prices have gone up too high so bye bye... -

Joel fixed my butchered haircut (think Prince Valiant with chunks accidentally cut out of the sides and one side longer than the other - *so* not good). He managed to take it from that, to a super-cute mod-lookin' short 'do. I love it. I've got Asian hair and he was not afraid to texturize the hell out of it - like it needs. The short backside of this cut is probably the best I've ever had (I've had short hair before.) because my hair is so thick and heavy - it's hard to have it do anything more than lay really flat. But he succeeded! Plus, it was obvious he really loves cutting hair and is a bit of a perfectionist, really pays attention to detail, and works hard to understand what it is the client likes/dislikes. I'll definitely be goin' back.
Bonus - they use bumble 'n' bumble products...so you smell yummy for the next couple of days. -

Camille brightened up my appearance and my outlook last week :)
With my short hair, I've decided I need a stylist who is willing to devote the extra care and attention needed to make sure everything is clean, stylish, and awesome. Since there's not much of it, it's pretty obvious if something goes awry.
Camille did a terrific job, and I walked out of the salon feeling and looking good. She spent extra time making sure I was completely happy + she gave me a free sample of product + she told me I can come back for a free clean-up + the price was not bad at all + they offer you all sorts of bevies while you wait + there's garage parking. I don't really have one negative thing to say at all.
Oh, plus, she is really nice too :) Five star review! -

Waterstones is in a great location on Guadalupe right across the street from the Wheatsville Coop and has plenty of garage parking. It is a very cool salon and I ended up coming here because of the amazing Rudolph Leon-Guerrero - he is simply the best hair stylist in Austin. I found him after trying many, many different stylists here in Austin when I moved from Boston 12 years ago. I tend to be careful with a dollar, and Rudolph is not inexpensive, but you really get what you pay for. When everyone from strangers in airports, dog park folks and SXSW rockers compliment you on your hair...you know you are styling...

went in to see joel again, and once again he hit it out of the park. we went a bit edgier and way shorter than i have in a while. usually i avoid going that short bc its never looked good that short - but like i said, homeboy has mad skills, and i must've said it like 5 times after he had finished, 'damn, i didn't know my hair could do that!'
i've also referred my sister and 2 friends to him and they all love their cuts. one of those friends had really long hair and decided to chop it all off and go with a sexy short cut like rihanna - she was nervous, and made me come with her, but afterward, she was ecstatic (seriously, she wouldn't shutup). joel really is a perfectionist and takes his time.
it should also be noted, tim, the owner went out of his way to graciously thank me for the review i wrote, and invited me to a cool event that they had going on for austin fashion week.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Ana Castro may be the best hairdresser I've ever had (and I've had a lot). I went to her eight months ago with a terrible, over-bleached mop that was my hair, and she has worked a miracle. She cut all of the damaged hair off and into a really fantastic short cut that felt long (it's crazy but true). We're now working the great short cut back into a shoulder-length style and she's brilliant. She is fun, SUPER talented and is available for a quick, "gosh, can you just trim this little bit of hair that isn't sitting right" kind of touch-up. She's awesome. I can't recommend her highly enough, especially for a great, wash-and-wear shorter cut.

my first time to see a professional about my hair. rudolph gave me my new "style." he was super cool and fun. give me some styling tips and seemed to really like what he was doing. i am not sure how much it cost as my buddy paid for me. he did tell me it was an inexpensive haircut with a really expensive coke. they give you free drinks... and i guess free haircuts if you can get your friends to pay...
