I am a Massage Therapist...I have NEVER had such an incredible caring, warming and awesome experience as I have here..I have had at least 20+ Thai massages and NEVER have been disappointed...
No the place is not a place you see on Rodeo Drive..believe me I have PAID for the "beautiful" ambiance ...with really disappointing results...
You cannot go wrong with this place..BUT you must communicate what you want..they are not mind readers...
My advice, take a deep breath and let go...you will not be disappointed!!! -

Sadly, I'm editing my review. I think the turnover rate is somewhat high at most spas. The good ones tend to leave, or you're like me and you just forget to ask for the therapist's name. The last two times I've gone, I wasn't happy with my massage. The first bad experience the girl did a number on my feet. It hurt when she was doing it and I was going to ask her to stop, but she already moved on to the next body part by then. Immediately after my massage, I couldn't put any pressure on that toe. She also put her entire weight on the side of my leg (between knee and ankle). At that point, I told her it hurt. My second bad experience was that the girl didn't even ask me how much pressure to use, and what areas to focus on. I could tell immediately she lacked technique, and realized she was the one that almost broke my husband the first time he went.
I found a new spa to go to, but if you find a great therapist here, make sure you get their name. I know going in blind to Thai spas is a hit and miss, and, unfortunately for me, the last two times were misses.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I used to love this place and have been coming here for over 6 years. Today I had an awful experience. Seems like the girls that they are hiring are less experienced then they used to be and they let the most annoying guy in. We are all in a quiet room getting our massages and this jerk won't stop talking....LOUDLY! Then when he is finally done talking, he starts breathing super heavy and moaning. I couldn't wait for my massage to end. The worst experience I have ever had at Wat Po or any other massage parlor. I am so disappointed.

I love wat po thai massage. They always do a great job, massage just to the point that it hurts, but not too hard. The people there are friendly and if you want to go with your wife/partner you can get a room massage side by side. Once you have a thai massage you'll never get another type.

I have been going to Wat Po Thai Spa for over 3 years now. It a nice and clean place. I always ask for Neena, she is the best. I had some bad messages there but overall I like going there for massage. If you go there before 2pm on weekday it is only $42 for 1 hr massage.

Los Angeles, CA
I love, love massages and wanted to try a new place. Based on all the great Yelp reviews, we decided to come here. I asked for the 60-minute Thai Combo Massage and told them to focus on my neck, shoulders and back. A lady in scrub pants and a t-shirt walked me to a room that was closed off by curtains. I stripped down to my chonies and struggled to put on the over-sized shorts that looked more like a huge bed sheet. I confusingly stuck my legs into the damn thing at every angle. They were so big, I didn't know what I was doing! It took me some time, but I finally figured it out. Initially I felt really awkward.. being topless and all.. and I don't think my curtains were completely closed..
The massage started out nice. The stretches felt good, the lotion and oils were soothing, but then the massage took a strange turn. She put a towel over my back and began massaging me through the towel. Wtf? It didn't feel very good and actually kind of hurt like a rug burn. As I laid on my stomach, she walked on my calves and dug her toes into them SO hard.. I thought my calves were going to split in half!
In the end, I walked out of there feeling relaxed.. or sleepy.. with calves that hurt like hell, "rug burns" on my back and neck, and kinks in my shoulders and back that were left untamed. Sigh. What utter disappointment. Will not be coming back! -

SO sad! I had written an unfinished review of this place. that review, I had given it 5 stars. But since my first time there, I have gone again and had a horrible experience. The woman who gave me a massage was really unskilled and when questioning the owner about my massage, she refused to offer me a deal. Very sad. Service is so important to the customer. to this customer, at least.

Woke up this morning, feeling fussy... food, gym, music, sleep... nothing sounds right to me. My hair appointment is not until next week, and I just got my mani pedi last week... run out of ideas pampering myself.... suddenly something clicked: Massage! Then the question is where?
Wat Po Thai Massage is located 2 blocks away from where I live. Passing by it on a daily basis, I have always wondered what it is like. With all great reviews from fellow yelpers, I have decided to spend my Sunday morning getting pampered by little Thai girls.
No appointment necessary, they got me in 10 minutes after I called. Massage was relaxing... their Thai Combo massage ($70 / 1.5 hr) was as least at good as what I got for 3 times the price at other upscale locations.
Feeling great after the massage, I got myself flowers, food, candles... went home and soaked in the tub for 30 minutes. I feel fulfilled, happy and satisfied. Who needs a boyfriend? Valentines day? whatever frills... Wat Po Thai Massage, Happiness guaranteed.Listed in: Glamour Girls

This is the southwest of massages: no frills but solid service by amazingly friendly and nice people.
I got the special 1.5 hr thai combo massage with free foot scrub and aromatherapy....and it was AWESOME!!!
It was like yoga + chiro + massage + pedicure all in one amazing package.
Ask for natan. Don't get tripped up by the minimalist style. And enjoy an amazing Westside massage experience! -

After a punishing workout and a restless night of sleep, my sister brought me here. Although the exterior looks a little dilapidated, inside it's nice and clean. You walk in, take your shoes off and are led into a curtained off area for the massage. I chose the Thai combo and it really helped my sore muscles. I don't know how much privacy the curtains afford but I do know that I could see my sister next to me. I just hope nobody else did!

Review from Eve S.
Just so were crystal clear people at Wat Po as the sign says: We Do Real Massage nothing else. My friend who came with me had never had thai massage before. The set-up was similar to many of these places but I would say in some respects it was nicer than some of the other ones I have been to. My visit was actually last month on 8/31 so truth be told I am a little hazy on the details. I paid for the aromatherapy and my major advice would be to save your money. It wasn't horrible it just didn't really add anything to the experience. I believe during the hours of 10 am and 2 pm there is a price break. (In fact I know there is but I am fuzzy on the hours) Would definitely return!

Review from Christina Y.
Santa Monica, CA
There's a time and a place for frills. But when my neck and shoulders are twisted into painful knots due to hours hunched in front of a laptop, frills are the last thing on my mind. What I need is a pair of expert hands that know exactly what to do.
Which is why I headed into Wat Po Thai this weekend even though I knew it probably wouldn't be much to look at... and boy am I glad I did!
First of all, they were able to fit me in for a last minute massage. Secondly, they informed me over the phone that their prices are actually LOWER than the very reasonable ones listed on their website. That was all I needed to hear - I was in my car zooming to West LA immediately.
And yes, as the other reviews have mentioned, this facility isn't fancy. But if you're paying $47 for a one-hour Thai massage in a strip mall ($44 on Mondays and Tuesdays before 2pm), you really don't have the right to demand plush spa-like settings, in my opinion. That being said, the place is still very clean and well-kept. They nicely put my flip flops in a drawer and led me to my stall, which is separated by curtains from the other people getting massages. This means that if someone doesn't remember to whisper you may get a little distracted, but it was fine when I went there.
I should also say that if you've never had a Thai massage before, it can be a bit of a different experience. For example, you strip down and put on these weird huge Thai pants that have no drawstring, so they basically fall off your butt. But I think this is necessary because in Thai massages they pull and move your legs around a lot so just being under a towel won't do. Also, you're lying on the ground on a thin mattress instead of one of those massage beds. If you've had a massage in Thailand or stayed in a particularly scary hostel abroad this may be familiar to you but otherwise it's a bit confusing. I had to ask a couple of times which way I was supposed to lay, which clothes I was supposed to take off, etc. But once I was settled in it was just fine.
If I knew that I'd just be laying under a small towel topless instead of the full coverage that I've had at places like Burke Williams, I guess I might have requested a female masseuse, but by the time my guy started he was so amazing I couldn't care less. Besides, you're already face down by the time they come in - no awkward introductions - so it didn't really matter anyway.
Now let's get to the good stuff. I think I've decided that Thai massages are the way to go if you really want full relaxation and to ease some serious muscle tension. When I've gotten Swedish massages they've felt nice, but I feel like they often ignore some parts of my body that could use some working on. For example, who would have thought that I needed my ankles rotated and each of my toes cracked? But it felt amazing! I think the highlight of my massage was when my masseuse (I think his name was Nadhan) cracked my right wrist with a nice satisfying POP... it was heaven!
I also really felt like I got my money's worth for the hour. Often in massages I feel like there's a lot of filler time where they're just kind of rubbing you and not getting into those sore muscles enough. I was pressed and kneaded and twisted the whole time, with knees, elbows and fingers all at work for the entire hour... and I think he may have even gone over a bit. I had written in my new client form that I wanted special attention on my neck and shoulders and he really took heed to that. And I loved that he used Tiger Balm in those areas too! It's inspired me to go buy a jar so I can try it at home.. though I'm sure it'll be nowhere near the experience I had here.
When the hour was done I was sad, of course, but I didn't feel like there was more that needed to be done. I felt completely relaxed and happy and refreshed.
I am so happy I've found my new favorite massage place... and who knew it'd be the cheapest one?!Listed in: Massages in Los Angeles

This place is heaven after sitting at a desk for 50 hours a week! I have been here twice and both experiences were great.
I can't remember who I had on my first visit, but I had Pa for my second visit and I definitely recommend him. There is one large massage room separated by curtains with a mattress on the floor. They took me to my "room" and left me alone for a moment to undress and put on some scrub-like giant pants.
I told Pa that I had a lot of pain and tension in my right shoulder and he spent a lot of time working that area. After he massaged my entire back with oil, he cleaned off the oil with a warm towel and continued to work on my right shoulder with some tiger balm. I felt that he really listened to where I had pain and worked hard to fix the problem.
What I love most about Thai massages is that they stretch your legs and twist you around until most of your bones creak and pop, but in the most satisfying way.
AND its cheap - $47 for hour massage!!! -

Today is a Valentine's Day and my husband took me here for a Thai/deep tissue combo. We both LOVED it. I asked to do it harder and indicated the areas that I felt needed that. My massause did it perfectly! An hour and a half went by soooo quick. I am really enjoying the way it feels now. By the way they asked, if we wanted to lift the curtain in-between me and my husband and of course we agreed, so we had a great couple massage time.

"WE DO REAL MASSAGES -- NOTHING ELSE!" I guess when people pull up to a seedy-looking plaza and walk up to a seedy-looking massage place, and see "Thai Massage" they think one thing... If that's you, this is not the place that you'll get your happy ending...
1. Check in, get a pair of funny pants, and get led into your room
2. Take off your clothes, put on the funny pants, and lie face down on the mat
3. The masseuse comes in and gets on the ground with you and starts massaging your back like any other massage, except that they're on the ground with you!
4. They crack your back
5. They spread your legs and get on top of you with their knees pushing into your bottom and legs
6. You flip
7. They stretch your legs and continue to knead your body with their hands, arms, elbows, knees
8. Crack your back again
$40 for a full hour
Here's what the flyer said of traditional thai massages: "Wat Po Thai Massage offers the popular traditional Thai Massage body treatment for relief of stress, body aches, and pain. This treatment is a Thai art of healing which has been in existence for thousands of years. The art has been perfected over time through the manipulation of muscles, deep tissue, energy lines, energy points and body joints. Our specialists are masters of this art of healing with years of education and experience and their treatment will leave you with a feeling of relief and exuberance."
Relief and exuberance I did feel! It was sort of a mix of a massage and a yoga class. I'd definitely come back here after a stressful day of work. -

After getting massages every day last month while I was in Thailand, I started missing them. And then I noticed as I was driving around one day that there's a business above my beloved El Super Taco called Wat Po Thai Massage. This was especially intriguing to me since I was just at the Wat Po in Bangkok and am still cursing myself for not getting a massage at the massage school there. Next trip, though . . .
Anyways, when I showed up, I was given a humongous pair of pants that gives new meaning to one size fits all. If you haven't come here before, all you have to do to put the pants on is fold over any extra fabric around your waist and then tie everything together with the attached cloth belt. And ladies, you do have to take off your shirt and bra, but for the most part, you'll be covered up with a towel.
I really like Thai massages, but I agree with the other reviewer about how it might be helpful to stretch out a little first, because you do end up getting into some crazy positions. I was also a little surprised when my massage therapist put oil on my back since none of the traditional Thai massage places I went to in Thailand used oil.
Overall, I had a really great experience here. Not sure why the other person gave a 1-star rating, but maybe the other reviewer just had a different therapist. Mine was great! -

Wat Po translates from Thai to English as "Reclining Buddha." While it was definitely a transformational experience, it was far from leisurely! This was my 2nd Thai massage so I was prepared to be contorted into a pretzel and pulverized, and Wat Po didn't let me down. Amazingly there were four of us and we called at 12pm on a Saturday and all four got right in.
It's located in a corner strip mall on Santa Monica Blvd above El Super Taco, a Sushi joint, and near a Chinese restaurant and Mexican Carniceria. I suggest dining ahead of time as you'll walk out of Wat Po in that massage-induced stupor, forgetting you even own a stomach.
I was led to a small room where my girlfriend Mel and I(it was a couples room) were asked to disrobe and enter standard Thai massage garb - minus the top. At my previous massage I was offered a top, but this time my top was bare. Cool for me, slightly weird for Mel although the masseuses were female so it was no biggie. I was proceeded to be kneaded, stretched, slapped, elbowed and pulled into a drooling oblivion.
At the end she thanked me and quickly whisked away as I slowly opened my eyes in groggy delight.
At $45 the price is right, and I rolled out with a green tea and a smile, a true happy ending! -

Love the Wat Po...
My back was a mess from carrying my work papers home every day, but that all went away after 90 minutes of kneading, stretching, cracking, pulling, and popping. And at $65 for an hour and a half, it's hard to go wrong.
For people used to sweedish massage, thai isn't gentle, but it hurts so good. I always feel energetic and detoxified when I'm done.
In my opinion, Wat Po is a bit better than Thai Sabai (Westwood).Listed in: You Kneed Me

I showed up at 8:30pm on a night they closed at 10pm, and asked for the 1.5 hr combo, plus the Yelp deal. They got me in, although instead of foot scrub and aromatherapy, because of the limited time, they had me choose one. Simple setup, decent prices. I'll be back!

What a wonderful find! I never would have found/tried this place if not for Yelp.
Pros:
- $$$$$$$. I've tried Massage Therapy Center, The Massage Garage, Healing Hands Massage, etc. etc. and you simply can't beat the price of $47 for 60 minutes
- The massage itself was superb. If you can get over the fact that your masseuse will eventually use her feet to knead your back, you must try what is hands down the most thorough and invigorating massage ever. Be warned, though - "Hard" really does mean hard. No wimps here.
Cons:
- The location I visited is on the second floor of a tiny, seedy strip mall on the corner of Brockton and Santa Monica Blvd. There are about 10 parking spots for the whole building, so be prepared to circle or park on the street.
- There is little to no ambience whatsoever. Your massage will take place in a large room filled with mattresses divided by curtains. The soft music only barely drowns out the sounds of the customer getting his/her massage next to you.
- Forget the nice padded bed with the robes and 500 thread count sheets. You get a pair of blue baggy pants and a gym towel.
I'm so grateful to Yelp for helping me find this gem. I'm definitely coming here to treat my tendonitis and back tension.Comment from George and Tammy C. of Wat Po Thai Spa 7/22/2010

I make plans to come here every time I visit LA, that's how much I love this place. I got my sister and mom hooked, too.
Prices went up last time I was there - still a steal at $55/hr and $75/1.5 hr. My one mediocre experience was with a new girl, who didn't put the pressure on like the regulars.
If you haven't been to a Thai place before, I recommend this one. Lower your standards. There are no massage tables, and no incense. You lie on a mattress while they do their pushing, pulling, twisting and kneading action on you. There are a couple mattresses to a "room" which is separated by other "rooms" by a curtain. Some rooms are one-mattress only.

The massage was absolutely great.
The price was fantastic (only $47 for one hour)
The place is very ghetto though. They have one large room divided into 6 curtains with a tiny mattress on the ground.
if you are not too picky about the way things look, you really can't beat the price and service. The massage was one of the best I have received. -

This place might have no frills, but they know how to get it done.
Yes, it's in a strip mall. Yes, the interior layout is divided by curtains and standard thin mats, and yes you will be able to hear other people. But the masseuse will treat you kindly and respect your modesty. And once they get started, you will be too in the zone to notice anyone else.
If you want plinky-plonky music, cucumber water and coddling, go somewhere else. If you want a tiny Asian woman to walk on your back, put her elbows into your sorest knots and stretch you out, get a Thai massage at Wat Po. I walked in with major shoulder pain and she worked it out in 60 mins for $47. Bargain. -

Stop in if you're looking for a cheap but solid massage. They really know how to work it. WP also has a quick 15 minute stress relief massage for $15 and you can choose either neck/shoulders or a reflexology foot massage. The only caveat is that you have to print and bring in the ad from their site. When selecting the pressure of your massage, I recommend not to go with 'deep' unless you want to be abused.

ok, so i have NO IDEA why the other person gave this place 4/5. i just got back from my 2nd trip to thailand a few weeks ago. i got massages there in bangkok, chiangmai, and pai... almost everyday.
i have no idea what it was i got at wat po, but it didn't really resemble thai massage. i'm bruised and sore all over today. my masseuse said she was trained in chiangmai. i'm not so sure about it. she kept getting up to answer the phone and check the lobby. she used her thumbs mostly and put pressure on the left side of my back, never getting to the right side. she snapped the knuckles on my right hand several times, but never on the left. she almost broke my knees when she stood on the backs of my legs. none of these things are what i experienced in thailand.
don't go there unless you want to feel PAIN! -
Review from Mike H.
Santa Monica, CA
Great service but not much for ambiance.
Massages are given in a single room with mattresses on the floor separated by curtains, so you can pretty clearly hear what's going on around you, despite the soft ambient music being played. This atmosphere discourages conversation with your masseuse, which may be a good thing depending on your preference. Personally, with rare exceptions I prefer to drift away mentally and enjoy my massages without thinking about maintaining conversation, so this suits me at Wat Po.
The current location is temporary until the old (fire damaged?) location is being renovated, so hopefully they'll take the opportunity to improve the aesthetics. However, the parking situation is unlikely to improve and it's barely adequate. I often end parking up to a block away.
All in all, you can't really go wrong with any of the masseuses because they all follow basically the same routine, with variations on the amount of standing-foot massage time and intensity of massage. Be warned though, "hard" might be more than you bargained for so don't be too proud to say "ow" if you need to.Comment from George and Tammy C. of Wat Po Thai Spa 7/22/2010

I LOVE this place. They have two locations, one on santa monica blvd and one on la cienega near melrose. I always take at least one hour thai combo massage. It consists of kneading, stretching, cracking, folding and being walked on to relieve knots. I get up after and feel alive again after the stress of college work is eased away. The service is very friendly and very accommodating. The place is always very clean and quiet, and the lights are dimmed for the ultimate relaxing atmosphere. For the price, the quality and service are outstanding and always leave me completely satisfied. They use hot towels on your feet and then to wipe off excess body lotion after the massage. it feels fantastic. You can request special attention on any aching body part, as I just did today after ballet practice left my legs and lower back very very stiff. I try to come as often as I can and even get gift certificates for my close friends birthdays. (they have a special where if you buy 4 certificates the 4th one is half off so i usually keep it for myself as a little gift)
They also offer facials, scrubs, swedish massage and a bunch of different additives with your massage like foot scrub for 10$. The hour thai massage is 47$ if i recall correctly. HIGHLY WORTH IT
if i could come weekly or daily i would definitely do it -

This place is not fancy at all but you can't beat the effectiveness for the price. I don't do Thai massages here, I can't take the walking on me thing; I usually get 90-minute Swedishes here instead. Tip: there's a table in the facial room, request that if you can. Lying on the floor mats, I have to turn my head to one side or the other, and it screws up any benefit my neck, which is in terrible condition, would get from the massage if I have to lie there with my head turned; on the table, I can keep my head straight and facing down. I haven't had a bad masseuse there yet, either. Sign up for their mailing list and get coupons delivered to your e-mail! Best way to keep us repeat offenders, I mean customers, coming back.

Tammy is the best. I think she may be at a different location now but if you hurt and want to feel better find her!! You tell her what hurts and that what she works on. I have had a few other therapist and while they were OK, I always wish that it was Tammy's feet that were on my back. Not only is she a great Massage Therapist but she is also one of the sweetest ladies you will ever meet. No, there isn't any fluff to this place but it is only $47 and well worth it. By the way...did I say Tammy is the best?

one of the best massages i have ever had in my life!
this place is heaven (well, except for the dumpy corner strip mall location.. (if heaven exists, i don't think it's located in a strip mall above a taco stand and a dry cleaner)
i would advise doing a little yoga before you go, because they will definitely stretch you and bend you in ways that you never thought possible! at one moment in particular, my masseuse folded me in half as i sat forward, and then curled up in a ball under me, pulling me, arching my back, stretched out completely on top of her, my bare breasts exposed to any possible passersby that wanted to peek in my curtained partition. (in other words, don't be modest, and just enjoy. and i'm kidding, no creepy dudes are gonna peek in your little partitioned area).
and the prices are sooooo good! $45 for an HOUR! you know those cheap massage company places that are kind of hit and miss? (more MISS) well, they are no comparison to this place!
you do have to put on some crazy oversized drawstring pants (that took me 10 minutes to figure out bythe way!) but it's all worth it.

I went to the location on 848 N. La Cienega, upstairs, just north of the Beverly Center on other side of street. Parking is free and off-street. Right next to the Spanish Kitchen so why not get a massage and then walk over for a margarita? As a veteran massage-receiver with some very stubborn knots, I can honestly and wholeheartedly say this place ROCKS. Tom was my masseur, and he went above and beyond to get the job done of untwisting my various tough neck and back areas. Lots of hidden muscles to get through! The place is ultra quiet, and everyone is in a lineup only divided by curtains. That is the only tiny drawback if you are used to a "spa-atmosphere". You lay on the wooden raised floor, and yes, you must keep your UNDIES ON, and they give you lightweight cotton giant-pants to wear also. I like the sign in the waiting area that states:" WE DO REAL MASSAGE AND NOTHING ELSE". I am still feeling sore in a good way. Call first and ask what their prices are. They are lower than the website. I like to overtip because Thai massage studios tend to charge less, and they deserve compensation!
