We combined this with a visit to the museum of glass. We were a bit pressed for time by the time we got here. There was a bit over an hour left before they closed, but they gave us a bit of a discount. we basically only had time to look at their current exhibit on the history of Woman's Suffrage, which was quite interesting.
I had been here before and thoroughly enjoyed the visit, in spite of having kids who wanted to rush through the museum. The exhibits were well put together. If you are with several other adults and have kids with you, there is a huge model railroad exhibit which someone can run off with the kids to see. You can actually make several of the trains run around the track, which is actually a model of a section of real railroad in WA state.
I would like to spend a day here without kids and take my time looking at the exhibits.

First off the Washington State History Museum is FREE the third Thursday of each month from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, I suggest if you want to visit take the Tacoma Link http://www.yelp.com/bi... in.
I wasn't very excited to visit the Washington State History Museum for some reason I thought it was going to be BOOOORING. Boy was I wrong! The museum is full of information and history brought to you in a fun and exciting way. It's perfect for the young and old, everyone will be entertained while learning about the history of the state. There are lots of interactive exhibits, to keep people like me interested, I love to push buttons and there were lots of buttons to push here.
I highly recommend taking time to visit the Washington State History Museum and if you can not make it on the third Thursday of the month from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, it's well worth the price of admission of $8.00.

Maybe because it's in Tacoma and maybe because it's dedicated to history, which so many people think is dull as dirt, this world class museum doesn't get the attention it deserves. I've visited just about every Smithsonian museum and the Washington State History Museum rivals them in terms of quality and depth of exhibits.
You don't just passively look at stuff behind glass here. Today's museums feature interactive videos and hands on displays that really bring history alive and this museum does an outstanding job. Walk through a longhouse, see how people used to live and dress, hear how they spoke, and absolutely do not miss the model train exhibit and watch the exact duplicates steam through replicas of Washington terrain as it used to be, including a model of Union Station. Visit the history lab to learn why history isn't really written in stone and new things are discovered all the time. Watch demonstrations, view art, get a real feeling for what it was like to be a pioneer or an interned Japanese-American or a Native American before white men showed up.
This place is large and fascinating and not to be missed and if you go between 5 pm and 8 pm on a Thursday evening you can not miss it for FREE.
