Great value, great location. The service is courteous and professional. You also get a free continental breakfast.
I haven't experienced a musty room as of yet, but note that some of the rooms are in the back and very, very dark. So make sure you ask for a bright room, unless you dig that sorta thing.
The TVs are small, but I never watch TV when I'm there since it's my pleasure hotel spot (I stay in Midtown when I'm doing biz). Ask for the new King room with the widescreen LCD if that's important to you.

The location is unbeatable.
The rooms are good sized, esp. for New York!
The rates are also very reasonable.
There is not wifi in all rooms, so I had to hang out with my laptop in the lobby (luckily there are comfortable couches).
The wait for the tiny elevator can sometimes be lengthy, so take the stairs.
I could deal with all of this but there was one thing I couldn't. The whole place had a musty (or worse) scent during our stay there. Perhaps it was the summer, perhaps it was the humidity, perhaps it was. . .
It could have been anything but really, who wants to stay in a room or hotel that stinks?

I began staying here in the late 1980s, when I'd come to NYC on business. The draw was ( and is) its proximity to the Village, its intimacy, and-did I say its proximity to the Village?
(Not to mention the Waverly Restaurant)...
And it's still relatively cheap for Manhattan...
Long may it exist!

I stay here every time I come to NYC for these reasons:
- it's clean, quiet, comfy
- the rooms are big enough
- it's cheaper than other hotels
- it's in the village & close to great places
- there is a discounted parking rate at a garage a half block away
- it includes breakfast (well, the times I've stayed I upgraded to larger rooms for $20 add'l/night, and that upgrade included breakfast

One of the few family-owned hotels in New York City, the Washington Square Hotel, located in the heart of Greenwich Village, is an Art Deco gem that - for more than a century - has attracted artists, writers, and the bohemians who view this area as the artistic soul of the city. The neighborhood is an entertainment and cultural center, teeming with music venues, upscale restaurants and casual cafes, trendy clubs, bookstores, antique shops, and off-Broadway theaters. It's also home to New York University, which owns many of the surrounding buildings. Best of all, Washington Square Park - with its distinctive arch at the foot of Fifth Avenue - is just steps away. Although removed from midtown Manhattan's theaters and museums, the hotel is less than a fifteen-minute subway ride away. Many of the 160 guest rooms are small, some claustrophobically so. Although the property offers quad accommodations, I would strongly advise against four people sharing a room, unless two are small children - and even then, expect a tight squeeze. The twin-bedded single isn't much larger than an oversized walk-in closet and definitely should be avoided! All rooms have cable TV, a safe, telephone with voice mail and dataport connection, clock radio, hairdryer, and an iron and ironing board. Decor in the superior rooms is boringly bland, but the renovated deluxe rooms - all of which are non-smoking - have been redone in a vibrant Deco style, with rich mahogany wood and portraits of film stars from the Thirties and Forties. The beds have pillow-top mattresses, bathrobes are provided, and high-speed Internet access is included. Considering they're priced not much higher than the superior accommodations, they're worth the extra investment. Rates, which include Continental breakfast in the North Square Restaurant, start at $190.00; reservations can be made at (800) 222-0418.
