Ah, Washington Park; where do I start? In my first visits to Portland, Mr. T and I would run the trails in the Park, enjoying nature so close within the city and appreciating the many views of downtown Portland. There's something really beautiful about Portland's reservoirs, and the one in Washington Park is no exception; it is emerald green and surrounded in beautiful gray stone. The park itself convinced me that Portland was an awesome city.

Once we moved here, I became more familiar with other things the park has to offer. The rose garden, of course, comes foremost to mind. The diversity of roses is spectacular, and when the roses are blooming the colors and smells will make you happy to be alive.

There are lots of grassy hills and benches, perfect for a picnic. The Pittock mansion is cool, not sure if that is technically in Washington or Forest Park, but the grounds at the mansion are beautifully manicured and the view from the terrace is wonderful, showcasing the city and the mountains beyond.

A wonderful, wonderful place to spend a day, a morning, an hour. Whatever you have.

Where do I start?  Awesome hikes?  Check.  Awesome playground?  Check (just down the hill from the rose garden -- one of those rare places that has a sand pit and where you can join your toddler on the play structure without getting in the way).  World class rose garden?  Check (June/July at about 9:30 am when the dew is still on the roses and the crowds have not yet arrived is the best time to go).  Zoo?  Check (kind of depressing place, though, if you ask me but then most zoos are that way).  Museums?  Lots of them.  Oh, and did I mention the amazing views?

This park is HUGE!  You can easily find a new part to explore every time you go there.  Today we were fortunate to find parking right away and then walked around the Rose Test Garden and then did a bit of hiking.  It was fun...what a beautiful day.  We had such a great time.  It was quite busy today but it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we pretty much expected it to be crowded.  Where the park is so big though, you can easily find a path to escape the crowds.

We found this trail near the Rose Test Garden and wandered around on it for quite a while.  There were folks walking, running, an interesting looking woman feeding squirrels, lots of birds, several hungry squirrels, and other people just enjoying themselves.  It was a lot of fun.

Truly a wonderful place to visit, what a great park.  I am sure we will be back there soon!  I have yet to visit the zoo or the arboretum but they are both on my list!

Gorgeous views from Mt Hood and downtown from the ritzy SW corner of town, the park is the perfect place for Frisbee and croquet on a sunny day. In fact this is where I engaged in an all out sweaty 3 flies up battle against Wes, the singer of Heart for a Tinman. They also have quite a Rose Garden (Portland has a nickname of the Rose City) but the bushes were not in bloom yet:(. There was a lot more to this park that we did not get to, if you get up there, and the weather is nice, try to keep a half day open to see it all.

So when my friend who lives in Portland I was visiting from my home in CO said that Washington Park was so big that he got lost in it, I sort of scoffed to myself: lost for an hour in a park? He must have a bad sense of direction.

Well, chock one up for karma: the next day I was walking with my girlfriend from the Arboretum and wanted to get back to Gooseberry. We found a map and started walking; however, 30 min later, we are still walking and not even close to anywhere. My stomach was rumbling so I admitted defeat and turned around. Lost in the park indeed...there are so many trails and turns with heavy tree cover that I wouldn't suggest taking a stroll through it unless you have some serious time to kill.

Anyway, the side close to PGE park has some see-saws. See-saws!! Awesome! I have fond memories of being 'that couple' on the see-saws with my girlfriend laughing non-stop as we see-sawed for at least 30 min.

Awesome park which makes me really understand the appeal of PO

This park not only reigns as Portland's pride and joy - but it puts even the cockiest and conditioned runners to shame. (Yes...I'm talking to YOU Phil Knight!)

With a list of amenities that rivals a 5-star Vegas hotel, this 130 acre park encompasses acknowledged favorites including the Oregon Zoo, the International Rose Test Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden, the Hoyt Arboretum, the World Forestry Center, the Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the deepest transit station in North America.

The view from the top is enough to blow anyone away...and it's always a great excuse to catch your breath after laboring up the steep wooded hillsides!

Whether you're in for a humbling butt-kicking run, or a romantic picnic with an unbeatable view - Washington Park has it all.

What a great piece of urban planning.  Take one train from your hotel downtown, and have so many choices for your family.  They have the park, the Zoo, the Children's Museum, and so much more as other people have pointed out.  Even the train station was interesting, apparently it is the deepest train station in North America, and had information and core samples from the dig.  My son was fascinated.

Obviously one of the smartest moves that early Portlanders made. Even though we were stingy with our money in some ways (like only building three stories out of 8 on City Hall) we really knew that parks would be needed in the future.

Thank goodness! This is one of the best parks, for every activity you can think of. Plus it is wonderful sight to see from the east side (say Mount Tabor).

This is a perfect place if you want to take someone out on a really romantic date with a picnic. The park itself is huge and there's plenty of places to find to set out a blanket out for a picnic. After the picnic you can walk around the park and take a look at the variety of roses in the garden. There's a children's play area if you have kids. You can see views of downtown Portland as well as Mt. Hood on a clear day. Of course you can also check out the zoo.

More than enough attractions to entice people with all sorts of varying interests.  The Oregon Zoo, The Children's Museum, the World Forestry Center, Japanese Gardens, the list goes on...since I'm an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I wanted to share my favorite part of the park.  A 7-mile round-trip hike that starts at the Vietnam Vet Memorial and brings you up to the Pittock Mansion for some sweeping views of Portland in 3 directions. The back garden at the mansion is lovely, and free so it's a great spot to stop for lunch before the descent. It's a nice downhill trudge back down.  There are tons of hiking trails throughout this area, and I love to come up here for exercise when time doesn't permit me to get out of the city.

You guys in PDX are soooo lucky. I would LOVE to have one of these in MY backyard! Contains just about everything you could ever want in the way of nature, gardens and recreational activities. There is never enough time during our visits to fully appreciate this place. I'm already looking forward to more of it during our next visit.

Washington Park was probably one of the prettiest things I have ever seen before. For San Diego readers, imagine Balboa Park with a ton of trees and very very lush grass and a million times the awesomeness.
I really think all of the featured spots here give this place a lot of charm from the range of immaculate houses on the drive in and around, to the infamous Rose Garden, Zoo, and assortment of other attractions. Washington Park is huge!!!!
This place looks like it would be the perfect date spot to bring a bottle of wine and a blanket to.
I hear there are summer plays and mini-concerts held at the bottom of the amphitheater; definitely would be something to check out.
I've never seen so many runners here in my life, but the pretty sights of it would probably convince anyone to take an adventure to explore it's beauty.
Open your sunroof (if you have one) as you travel up the twisting road and take in exactly how many trees are in the canyons below and how high the trees go. It's intense.
In no way am I one to usually get excited about nature and such, but this place could convince me to be one.

The park is huge and 1000 times better than the Golden Gate Park. There are soo much to do in this park, for children and adults, and it is well kept. There are so many choices to choose from zoo, rose garden, Japanese garden, or just simply... hiking or strolling along the park. It's beautiful on its won with the pine and firs, especially on a beautiful sunny day where you can picnic and enjoy the nature and the city view.

Indeed a great park. I visit the holocaust memorial there occasionally, gives you a sense of what that time was like and can be quite thought provoking.
