We finally got our train-admiring son on Caltrain for the first time today. Some moms recommended riding up from San Mateo to Burlingame and walking over to Washington Park. That was a fun outing!
I only wish there were more swings at Washington Park! There were only 2 swings, and my son spent a while coveting the swings (eventually he got to swing for a bit). Other than that, thumbs up for the park. It's got a huge play area with climbing structures, plus a large sandbox and a faucet for kids to get wet and messy.

I went to Burlingame to visit an old friend from Georgia who was staying with his mom during the holiday weekend. My friend's mom informed us that there was a free concert at Washington Park and since it was a warm and sunny Sunday we decided to check it out.
Washington Park is a large park that covers about 19 acres of land and features a full size baseball diamond complete with a big grandstand area, tennis courts, a volleyball court, a basketball court, a soccer field and a children's play area. There are lots of finely manicured grassy areas and many large trees, perfect to throw down a blanket or a folding chair and enjoy a picnic. There is a large recreation center inside the park that my friend told me hosts lots of community programs and private gatherings. In fact he said his high school graduation party was held there. The free concert dubbed "Music in the Park" was held at the back of the recreation center.
Music in the Park is a free concert series that takes place every Sunday during the month of July from 1 PM until 3 PM. While we were there we enjoyed the soothing, relaxing acoustical sounds of Oscar Reynolds. Oscar Reynolds is a Bolivian Afro & Peruvian trio that specializes in Bolivian pan flute and acoustical guitar compositions. Despite the fact that the concert was well attended we were able to stretch out because there is so much grassy area. It was nice just to lay in the grass, listen to the music, look up into the big trees, see bright blue sky and see moths and butterflies float about. I don't get a chance to be lazy often so this was nice.
Concert attendees are welcome to bring their own picnic lunch. The park also sponsors a BBQ tent and sells icy cold drinks nearby. There is signage that says alcohol is prohibited, but I don't know how much that is enforced. I saw picnickers sipping on wine without any problems.
Washington Park is just a short walk from downtown Burlingame and the Burlingame CalTrain station. There is a small parking lot and an abundance of parking on the surrounding streets. (Note: The recreation center is so far from the train tracks that we couldn't hear any of the train noise.)

I really like these courts, they are nicely surfaced, the lighting is good, and I think paying a $2 bucks for an hour for lights is totally fair. The Caltrain going by every now and then can be a little annoying, but you just have to learn how to zone those kind of things out. They courts can be crowded sometimes, but even better is that there are plenty of other public courts around the area as a back-up plan.

4 nice courts. For public courts, these are as good as they come. The one at the west end seems to… Read more »
Courts are nice but many players over there hog the courts and don't respect the posted guidelines and other players waiting.
The playground here has the brattiest 2 and 3 year olds on the peninsula. And the parents are even worse. This park is VERY busy, and the playground equipment is not all that. If you are looking for a place to see and be seen with your fancy stroller, then go here.
The rest of the park is beautiful, and has great eucalyptus trees. Its nice for walking around, but don't even think of stopping for a picnic, the squirrels here are fearless.

Washington Park is apparently the oldest park in Burlingame. We went there when some friends hosted their engagement party at the park. I was amazed at how packed the entire park was; it is clearly popular. Parking was a bit annoying, but doable.
Tennis courts: 4 nice tennis courts in good conditions with night lights. Good size parking next to the tennis courts. A lot of regular players there during 1:30-5 PM daily, most everyone know each other by first name. Majorities of players are usually from 3.5-4.0
Washington Park has a lot of expansive lawns which are needless to say perfect for picnics, barbecues, and functions. We have had our company picnic here and enjoyed it a lot. There is plenty of playground equipment for kids of all ages. Everything, including the walkways and restrooms are well maintained. This is definitely a gem that will be here for years to come. Keep up the good work City of Burlingame.!
