50 Flags. Flowing free....(http://www.yelp.com/bi...). We all know what that means.

The Monument which also offers a view from the top of the huge pillar (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)  for a suggested donation of $1. That can't be beat. If you like stairs of course. There is no elevator and this place is huge!!!

In the Middle of the National Mall with superb views to the East of the White House (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). To the West is the Lincoln Memorial (http://www.yelp.com/bi...), you really get an idea of just how far you have walked.

I believe this is one of the best monuments in Baltimore.  It is the first Washington Monument too (sorry DC).  Anytime someone comes to the city I encourage them to swing by it.  During the winter, it is decorated with lights, making it extra nice.  During the spring and summer months there are various festivals held.  If you come to Baltimore and you have any interest in seeing monuments, this should be one of your first stops.

Washington Monument & Museum is located literally across the street from Walters Art Museum in Mount Vernon.  It's an interesting sight to see, but the most interesting part of the museum was closed: the monument designed by architect Robert Mills in 1829.  At the monument, you're suppose to be able to climb 228 stairs in order to reach the top.  I was looking forward to this more than anything else.  There were two problems.  First, the monument is only open from Wednesday to Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM, and 10 AM to 5 PM on weekends according to the sign in front of the monument.  I came back here on a Saturday around 10:30 AM, and the monument entrance was still chained-up.

After doing some research, I found out that the monument was closed for renovations late last year due to a car crash that damaged one of the fences.  The Monument's official website doesn't tell you that the monument itself is temporarily closed, which can throw off a lot of tourists looking to come here in hopes of climbing the historical monument.  Hopefully I'll get to the enter the monument soon, but it might not be for a while.

Latest word of the Washington Monument can be found here (March 26, 2011): http://www.baltimoresu...

Perhaps my most favorite spot of all of Baltimore.   Walked all the way to the top of the Washington Monument... the 360 degree vista is literally breath taking...  we were breathing harder than the Big Bad Wolf after the climb.  Museum is simple yet rich in historical facts and artifacts.  This is the Baltimore address to have.

Although my legs were screaming in pain for a good few days afterwards, I recommend checking out this monument.  There's something like 238 stairs up to the top, but once you get up there, the views are amazing.  The only downside is that the staircase is extremely narrow and there's not much room once you're at the top. But it's historical, it's beautiful, and it's well worth it.

The reason I decided to Yelp this specific monument was because of the guy who works there.  He is awesome!  Such a big smile and a friendly laugh.  He seemed so happy to be there, answered questions, took pictures for us, and just made the experience that much better.  He let us walk out onto the section that is a few stories up to get some awesome pictures of the near-by church and the cityscsape.  AND he even gave me a courtesy laugh when I got to the bottom of the monument and said "you should donate a $1 to US for climbing those stairs!"  Apparently everyone says that to him but he didn't get annoyed for hearing it for probably the 1,000th time.
    Thanks for that.

So I got a good workout, saw something historic, and got a laugh...what more do you need?

It still amazed me how few of Baltimore's residents have actually been to the top of the Washington Monument.  It's free (well, $1 suggested donation, but I've never seen anyone pay) and the views are superb.  It seems like the gates at the top are to keep you from going out on the ledge, although one typically is open, offering you access to walk around, just below the statue, with an amazing view of the city.  Definitely not for the acrophobic or claustrophobic.

I'd probably be inclined to give them 5 stars but I went during their business hours this spring the Monument was chained up so I wasn't able to go up inside as I was looking forward to (I wasn't the only one there with a disappointed look on their face either). The man who designed this monument, Robert Mills, is the man responsible for the more well known Washington Monument in D.C. (this one came first). The monument was designed in 1815 (only 16 years after George Washington's death) and was completed in 1829. It's 178' tall and is situated in a small but beautiful park in the gorgeous area of Baltimore known as Mount Vernon.
