Who would have thought you could find your piece of heaven on a small island in Door County Wisconsin.
This is an amazing bed and breakfast, you walk in to the small of freshly baked breads (even in the middle of winter when no one is on this island) make yourself at home and start a fire in the cozy living room , enjoy an island wheat beer from the kegerator, and a must have is the the 4 course meal privately cooked for you from the co-proprietor Chef Leah Caplan who also will give you a culinary lesson in the hotels culinary institute.
Culinary classes are only offered in the high summer season. Very reasonably priced, great service. Also this place and island are very "Family" (LGBT) friendly ... my bf and I enjoyed a great relaxing get away after the new year before we had to head back to work! -

To my on-going despair, the restaurant and culinary school of The Washington Hotel are no longer in operation. *insert loud wailing and rending of garments here*
The Hotel itself is still available for group rentals and also hosts the annual Harvest Fest for Capital Brewery. As I have not stayed on the premises, please see other reviews to assess the quality of the lodgings.1 Previous Review: Show all »

washington island is definitely worth the loooong drive from chicago, and if you're booked in a room here even more so. the washington is a refurbished 19th-century boarding house which now acts as a boutique hotel/culinary school. the owners strive to encourage the local agricultural economy and feature as many products grown on the island as possible (including house-made vodka distilled from island-grown wheat). there are only eight rooms and most use a shared bathroom, but even the smallest room is very comfortable and it's surprisingly one of the cheapest accommodations on the island.
