7 reviews for Wasabi Japanese Steak House
Great ambiance on the dining room side of the restaurant. The other side is hibachi. Service was excellent. Our entire meal was sushi and it was some of the best we've ever had, including other major metro areas much closer to the ocean! Tops in the area for sushi by a country mile.
Would recommend reservations, at least for Fri/Sat nights - it was packed.
I'd rate this somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4.
It's clearly not an authentic Japanese restaurant, as I didn't see a single Japanese person on the staff and the menu is Americanized. The decor is intriguing and aesthetically pleasing, though, and it does the job.
I ordered tuna, mackerel, and scallop, the agedashi tofu (fried tofu), and the softshell crab. The sushi was very good, with the scallop being the highlight-- it was melt-in-the-mouth fresh and delicious. The agedashi tofu, though not authentically prepared, was tasty. The "breading" is supposed to be like tempura breading- so light that it can get soft with one dip in the sauce- but it was more like tofu hush puppies with crunchy breading. The softshell crab was ok... the sauce (tonkatsu sauce) was mismatched in my opinion. The crab tasted better being dipped in the agedashi tofu broth, which is similar to tempura dipping broth.
Overall, decent place. I went twice in a 48-hour span and it was satisfying.
Just want to make an addendum to Danny K's review of the place:
DRINK UP. JUST DRINK UP and you won't mind that your chef is non-Japanese and that you are in middle of nowhere Ohio.
DRINK UP.
If you are in Akron for business and are by yourself and don't know what you want to eat but are thinking Japanese may be on the cards, then seriously don't look any further than Wasabi. I came here the day I arrived in Akron for my birthday and figured I'd have a tasty treat for myself. The entrance of the restaurant is really soothing. Water flows beneath you and to the sides and its just really appealing to the senses. To the left are the Hibachi grills where you can watch the cooks dazzle you with all their superfluous cooking skills. To the right is the traditional sit down restaurant that I opted for.
I ordered a spider roll to start my meal off with, and at 11 dollars a pop, I was seriously considering ordering another one after enjoying every bite of the first. I ordered the steak and shrimp from the entrees section of the menu and was glad to see it came with miso soup and a salad. Both the soup and salad were great and prepped me for a delicious main course. The steak and shrimp set me back 18 bucks, but paying 37 with tip for dinner on my birthday wasn't bad at all.
I decided to come back two nights later and ordered the Sushi Combo for 22 bucks and loved it. The White Tuna (which apparently isn't even tuna according to some people I overheard talking at the sushi bar) was fantastic. The plate consisted of about 6 types of fish with three slices each. it also came with miso and salad. The staff were friendly, the owner asked me what book I was reading and looked like he cared, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was superb.
Like Arnold always said, "I'll be back".
The place is really nice and quite big. I was surprised to see such a nice place in Akron area since other few places I went were not up to the mark. This is a place where you can take your date.
The food wise, I liked the sushi I had. I went with Salmon and Tuna since I like to play safe when going to a new place. My sushi and Maki rolls were fresh and tested great. Philadelphia roll had little more creme cheese than I like but it was good. They have lots of variety and plenty of items to choose from. The prices are on high side but Sushi places are always little pricey.
I will go again when I feel like eating Sushi.
As good as it gets for a Japanese steakhouse, and reasonably priced. This restaurant is easily one of the best Japanese restaurant in the Midwest.
On the sushi side of the restaurant, the rolls are tasty and fresh. And most importantly, the sushi rice is perfectly moist. Even the miso soup is better than a lot of the restaurants that I have been to. The pieces of onions they put in the soup makes it an instant and flavorful upgrade than many restaurants.
The hibachi chefs are extremely entertaining while preparing your delicious food. The meats, seafood, veggies, and the RICE are mouthwatering and almost makes you wish the hibachi chef will cook faster. Maybe I was just a little bit too hungry that day. But the show is just great too. The little pyromaniac inside of me loves the onion Volcano!
Great hibachi place. Probably best in the Akron area. Otani is not as good and Hibachi Japan comes a close second. Their sushi is pretty awesome too. $35 for their best meal, the Wasabi special comes with filet mignon, lobster tail, scallops, then you also get shrimp, rice, salad and soup. Service and show is pretty good too.
