Old. Dark. Beer. TVs. Bar. Dining. Mmmm.
Dang, the fish and chips on a Tue night in January really hit the spot. The haddock was battered and presented as about 5 or 6 nice 'n full 4-bite pieces with a side of piping hot steak fries. The fish tasted very fresh, was served right out of the oven so the innards were nice and hot, the crunch was perfect (kind of a crumb-like batter versus a battery batter), and I was in fish & chip heaven. The bottle of malt vinegar on the side was all mine and I ate practically everything. The cost is slightly higher than I would expect to pay in a tavern, but the quality and quantity made up for it. -

You've heard the spiel, and in fact, it's all true: The Warren Tavern may be the most historic watering hole in America; it is the oldest tavern in Massachusetts and was visited by the likes of George Washington and Paul Revere. The Warren Tavern also happens to be "my local".
Since 1780, The Warren Tavern has been pouring pints and dishing up grub in Charlestown. I moved to Chucktown from New York City just six short months ago, and The Tavern has become my neighborhood grub hub. I've been for brunch, lunch, dinner and beers at midnight. They host a trivia game every Monday and live music multiple nights a week. The Tavern is family friendly through the dinner hour, gives over to Boston sports fanatics during game time, and becomes a sort of shot pounding, beats thumping, twenty something singles scene Friday and Saturday nights (not my personal fave, and if they kept the quiet pub vibe going on weekends, I would likely have awarded them 4 stars).
The food is better than you'd expect it to be for a bar, but not good enough to qualify it as restaurant fare. The menu is long (which is not often a good sign), and includes mediocre barroom standards like burgers, wings and fried calamari. But dig a little deeper and you'll find more inspired fare like their Arugula & Pear Salad or the Pastrami Pretzel Reuben. My suggestion is to stick to the native seafood classics like peel & eat shrimp, lobster rolls, crab cakes and the baked cod with potatoes and green beans they often feature on the specials menu; sprinkled with a crust of buttery Ritz crackers, this recipe optimizes the the signature New England style that's been around since, well, The Warren Tavern was founded.
I would be remiss not to point out that the front room of this place is picture perfect. With its exposed wooden beams, old-growth pine floor boards and antique appeal, it's worth waiting for a table in the front room to enjoy history, if not dinner, at its finest. -
Review from Bret C.
Okay, it's old. And some of the place is falling apart. Time for a remodel.
Food was average...And it's one of the only options in the Charlestown area.
Overall, unimpressed. I didn't find a reason to come back. -
Review from Dara C.
This place is wicked cute, right in the middle of the nice part of Charlestown I will never be able to afford, even if I did start sticking up fictional banks in the North End.
It's a little old on the inside but what can you expect? It was built in the late 18th-century, and I believe that was the last time anyone bothered to reupholster or finish the floors. No problem. I have never minded my surroundings when there is cold beer on tap. And there is cold beer here! Nothing out of the ordinary, to be sure, but decently cheap and delicious beer has never angered anyone.
The food is okay, save one pathetic turkey burger that was rubbery and tasteless. (I have never before encountered a turkey burger that squeaked when you chewed on it.) A regular "Cottage" burger (organic egg, cheddar, and bacon) was absolutely delicious, while the Tavern burger (garlic-herb cheese spread, honey dijon) was kind of soggy, with awkward competing flavors that weren't marrying so much as divorcing without a prenup. My friend's BLT was yummy, slathered with guacamole on the thick white bread none of us were allowed as children but we all dream of now.
Warren Tavern is a good, unpretentious neighborhood bar with TVs, uninspired but tasty food, good service, and those heavy wooden tables that I can't move by myself. Adds up to four. -
Review from Jean K.
The Warren Tavern seems like a real slice of Boston, a local type of joint. It's a historic tavern (George Washington drank here!) but it's not all twee and historical society, it's a just a normal pub - people hanging out and drinking beer with their friends. It's pretty popular after work on Fridays. The bartenders are all friendly and can recommend local beers. The food isn't spectacular, just solid pub food. I had the pork chops and they were big and pretty juicy. Definitely a lot of food.

In town on business and ate dinner here with a co-worker. Good comfort food and cool bar/tavern atmosphere. We walked here from the Residence Inn on Tudor Wharf (only about 5 mins, but we walk fast). I had the shepards pie, which is made with beef instead of lamb and was delicious. I prefer it be made with beef anyway. Very filling meal. Service was good and fast, but they weren't terribly busy either in the dinning area. this would be a good happy hour and late night drink place as well i think.

Review from Wendy S.
My boyfriend is a rabid history buff, and took his high maintenance, urban girlfriend to Charlestown on a hot and humid summer day in the hopes that he could a) enjoy a frosty beverage in this historic tavern where Paul Revere was a regular and b) get her tipsy enough to agree to climb up to Bunker Hill. Mission accomplished!
The tavern is charming, located in historic Charlestown where you're surrounded by history. From the old school sign on the exterior to the low ceilings, dark woods, and exposed beams, the interior truly takes you back in time. Paul Revere was Warren Tavern's "Norm," which is pretty darn cool. We only had drinks so I can't comment on food, but the atmosphere was great. Sure, they've added TVs and modernized some of the space. But the overall structure and integrity of the tavern remains intact. -
Review from Damien S.
Because it's been the destination for six years of post-kickball prandials and potables, the Warren owns a special place in my heart.
The menu boasts step-up fare, with the tavern chips and wings excelling when hot. Burgers run $9-10 a patty and serve the purpose, cooked to requested temps while trying their damnedest to hold a mountain of sauteed mushrooms, bacon or whatever else you've asked to top.
I get the history, but it's not something any restaurant should hang its hat on, and the modernizations build to an anachronistic setting. Lean against original support beams while quaffing a blueberry wheat. Absorb the portraiture of revolutionary heroes over the sounds of Lady Gaga. Sit where George Washington sipped a pint, and watch the game on one of numerous flat screens. Just like the right to bear arms, some things deserve to evolve over time.
Sport the BSSC shirts and they'll knock 20% off your food bill, and during this last visit, my absolute favorite server anywhere (Natalie!) tossed a few pizzas on the team's table - just because she rules. This isn't preferential treatment; it's how the staff respects their regulars. And if I were you, I'd get to showing your face a little more.Listed in: Man Caves, Helloooo Wil-Burger!, Great for Groups, Charlestown

I used to be a regular here when I lived on Monument Ave. That was at least 10 years ago, and I'm happy to say that nothing has changed. I was there for a few drinks after dinner last Sunday, and it's exactly the same.
It's a great place to just hangout with friends, have a few beers, and enjoy yourself. nothing fancy, nothing fussy, just a darn good neighborhood bar. Stick with beer or basic mixed drinks and you won't be disappointed, (this is NOT a martini or wine bar, if that's what you want go elsewhere)
I miss it. -
Review from Scott M.
Not too many taverns can claim Paul Revere and George Washington as guests. Revere was a regular and a friend of Warren. He was also Grand Master of the Masons and held regular meetings here at Warren Tavern. So you might see Nick Cage filming the next National Treasure at Warren Tavern, who knows...
I had the Chicken Salad sandwich on the bun. It was really good. The chicken salad was fresh and very well balanced in flavor. It did not have too much mayo like some Chicken Salads can have at times. It came with a side of bar chips and dill pickle. I give the food four stars it was very good.
I took my food to go on this occasion; however, the atmosphere is really pretty cool inside. You can imagine Paul Revere and George Washington having a refreshment. I think it is a good historical stop which happens to also have pretty good food.
I'd go back. -

I haven't been to many places in Charlestown, but this is one of my favorite after work spots. I have to say, being from NC but living in Boston, I love that this bar always has regulars and people from the area in it.
I enjoy the chardonnay I get which is unusual for bars with good beer selections. And the food is pretty good as well. I usually don't eat but I did have some buffalo fingers that were quite tasty and my friend Val says it was like the best fish and chips ever! I don't know if that's quite true, but they are pretty good at least!
I'll be there a ton more as the summer goes by I'm sure! -
Review from Liana K.
I'm swinging between a 2 and a 3 star rating. I was soo excited to finally go into this old gem. Unfortuneteely I came here on a friday night where the crowd mainily consisting of the typical Woo girls and their fan clubs with awful music blasting. Beer selection is very limited as well.
However, even with a negative first impression, I would still like to enjoy this place and would like to return here during the day (to avoid the woo! crowd) and grab a bite. -

Food was great and it's a really cool location/restaurant. Service was meh which impacts the place too much to give it 4 stars.
A friend of mine lives in Charlestown and took me here when I was up on a visit to Boston.
Our waitress was not attentive at all. LOL with the menu as it appears that you get "pickle fries" which I asked about and it is just a comma issue haha.
Of course I had to try their lobster roll and some wine. The roll was huge and had copious amounts of lobster. Really really really yummy..I had to eat it with a fork and knife and then still take half home and I couldn't put anymore of it away haha.
If I visit, I would love to try this place again. It was really packed so that may explain the service, but even my friend who lives there was a little bit perturbed by the waitress....perhaps it just wasn't her night XD -

This restaurant was kinda all over the place. When you walk in, you are in a bar area with tvs and the game on. We went for lunch and were seated in the back of the restaurant, a place with white cloth napkins, tablecloths, candles on the table. I guess it's nice to be able to do both atmospheres without leaving the restaurant?
The Good: I had a bowl of clam chowder ($6) and I highly recommend it!!!! If you get the cup ($4.25), it actually comes in a cup - cute :) Tastes great.
I had the appetizer Philly cheese steak spring rolls and my colleagues had the Shepard's pie. The spring rolls (should be renamed egg rolls on account of them being fried no?) were good, but there were only 4 pieces for $8.95 - 2 egg roll sized rolls cut in half -WHAT? outrageous. The Shepard's pie looked okay but the menu stated vegetables in the pie - maybe 3 carrot pieces were found but no peas. Someone at the table said it was a bit sour for her taste.
Service was okay; I asked for a box for my 4 spring roll pieces because the bowl of chowder filled me up and I got a large Styrofoam box (waitress took plates and brought food back already boxed). I had less food leftover than the other 2 at my table and a way-disproportional box. My Shepard's pie friends got small, round, manageable containers and a paper bag. How was I to carry my leftovers? My other dining companions could just put theirs in their bookbags. I put my food in a museum gift bag so it would fit in my purse, hurmph.
Maybe I should just go for the bar scene? -
Review from Chas K.
Some places - and people for that matter - just don't look as good in the unflinching light of day as they do in gaslight. Warren Tavern is among that group. Stopped in for lunch after my son's hockey game vs. Charlestown. Yes, I get that it's old, but it's time to dust and paint; and maybe invest in some new furniture.
Decor aside, the food was OK. My wife and I each had burgers at $9.95. They were cooked medium rare, as ordered. The fries were crispy and hot. The half sour pickles were crunchy. The server forgot the "famous" BBQ sauce for mine, but eventually brought it. Liked the char-broiled flavor, too. On the down side, the sesame rolls were on the hard side, like they were day-old.
My son had corned beef hash w/ what were supposed to be poached eggs ($8.95). Problem here is that he asked for soft yolks. He got hard-over fried eggs. I figured it was the kitchen's fault, but when we got the check, we got our answer: The server entered "over hard" for the eggs.
They have a wide selection of beer on tap, including a tasty Harpoon Celtic Ale. And here's a tip: they're running some great drink specials for St. Patty's Day, e.g., a pint of Jameson and Ginger Ale for $7, and you get to keep a commemorative glass.
Despite the goof-ups, the server was attentive and friendly. Overall, we had a decent meal. I won't make a special trip there, but it's a good choice if you're in "The Town."

We only stopped here on a Sunday afternoon because my fiancée was enthralled with how historical the place is and that Paul Revere frequented here and George Washington made a pit stop. I am so happy we did.
Atmosphere was awesome! There was a live entertainment and the place felt cozy. Food was good. I recommend the Award winning Clam Chowder. We also had fish and chips which was decent.
We just loved it so much. Five stars. -

Great both times I've visited!
The best things about it:
The Chowda!
The historic environment.
Great beer on tap.
Everything else is just pretty good. Definitely a place to take friends from out of town -

Steak tips tasted great but were only lukewarm. Extensive beer selection. I asked for balsamic with my salad and the server brought Italian instead and continued to tell me it was balsamic. I wouldn't go back unless someone insisted.

A friend recommended this place to me ater having biked across the US. This place has a great atmosphere in a small historical town. The history around the bar is great.
Overall the food was good and the beer selection was nice. I found the clam chowder to be big on volume but was a little disappointed in the taste (maybe I was burnt out). -

The Tavern is a staple. I've been going here for at least a decade and it delivers consistently. A classic pub with townie bartenders who are friendly and nice and seem to know alot of the patrons. I think management has changed because my favorite ceasar salad is not the same anymore, but they've got plenty of other choices. On Wednesday nights they have live music which can be loud, but not a deterrent for conversation. Sometimes they even let you dance.
I try not to eat meat, but, I have to say they have a great selection of burgers here. If I knew their meat came from a local organic farm I would highly recommend this place because their combination of flavors is good. You can also get full dinners here and they don't disappoint.
There's a good selection of beer here and the bartender can make me a good Black and Tan. I always get a spanish coffee when I come on Sundays and that's a goodie, too.
They have TVs all over the place so, if you're a sports fan, this is a good place to go and see the game. Plus, lots of the neighborhood families are here on weekends.
The Tavern has a great history and it's really neat to know you're in the same place where Paul Revere et al planned his midnight ride during the Revolution. One of the charms of this restaurant are the low ceilings and history. This place is solid. Good salt-of-the-earth people, tasty comfort food, good beer, and fun times. -
Review from David M.
Surprisingly inexpensive (for a touristy spot), very friendly staff, and amazing food. C got the blue cheese and pecan salad - perfect. I got the steak and eggs. I would go back just for a plate of their home fries.
Also, see if you can find the portrait of a kenedy. Its hiding. -

I love Charlestown. I love drinking. Therefore, I love you, Warren Tavern.
I've been here only once. Didn't eat any food (although I've heard from a very reliable source that the food is decent). Had a few too many beverages, and had an awesome time. This place is an antique and i definitely underestimated it (cheers to you Paul Revere!)
I'd say its definitely an olderish crowd, and as a 21 year old, that means late 20s-early 30s. The bartenders were kinda awesome. Super nice, extremely friendly, and willingly played all the songs I obnoxiously requested all night. Definitely a fun place to come with a group of friends. Doesn't really seem like the kind of bar you'd get down and dance in, but oh, it was... or maybe it was just me.
Looking forward to come back here whenever I get the chance and actually having some dinner. -

My friends lived in Charlestown and this was their neighborhood bar -- and our weekly Monday night trivia. The food is fine -- expensive, but usually does not disappoint your tastebuds.
The triva is not for the faint at heart - it will kick your brain into a new dimension. Better study up before you get there or you will be very sad. Get there early too -- you will be standing if you don't have a table saved by the time trivia starts.
It is somewhat hilarious that no one seems to be able to commit to a firm story on if Warren Tavern is THE oldest ________ . It seems to be just "one of" the oldest drinking locations in Boston.
I hear there is a "scene" on one of the weeknights -- i think it is WednesdayListed in: I miss you Boston

I love the Warren Tavern! Oh, so much.
I am a complete and total sucker for super-old cozy places that are full of history. This is where I go everytime I have a craving to throw back a few in the same spot where George Washington did the same. I get that craving a lot. The Warren Tavern was an automatic win for me for that reason. I love the old wood, I love that it's always warm, I love the home-y decor. Sure, it's always consistently full of wasted townies, but that's part of its charm.
The food is consistently above average. Not outstanding, mind you, but very very good. I love the burger and the clam chowda is the best Charlestown has to offer. Once night on the way home from a sparse meal, I was jonesin' for some chowda and they were nice enough to give me some to go - so random. The entrees are a bit overpriced and nothing special (except a friend once had the mussels fra diavolo and said it was wonderful), but apps and sandwiches are amazing. Fries are delicious. I would stay away from the chicken/seafood salad. Boyfriend got that once and I have never seen a sketchier-looking meal.
For a random old townie pub, the nightlife is poppin. Sometimes they even have sweet live music.
A part of me really wants to click on that extra 5th star. If the entrees were a little more special, I totally would. It's not one of those restaurants where everything is good. I wish beers were cheaper. But good lord I do love it here. -

I am writing mainly to beg the manager/owner/employee of the place to CLEAN the walls!! I took my son here for dinner after a day at the museum. We were sat in the room to the right of the bar. The wall by the table had some food splatter, and ketchup dried on it. Really pretty gross. I think I might of been able to get past that, (would of been better sitting by the windows but those needed a cleaning too). However it took quite a while to get our drinks though the place wasn't that busy. Dinner came, my burger was really tasty, but the roll was stale. You know, like the package was open since lunch and the roll got stale from the air (now Im worried about the cleanliness of the kitchen!) Unfortunately my sons sandwich was not okay at all. He bit into a chicken sandwich to almost gag on a huge piece of gristle. We did send it back and get another burger, and probably would of liked another drink to get the dry roll down but alas, no waitress until the end. Too many choices in that area for this classic place to forget basic restaurant hygiene.

Best New England Clam chowder! Couldn't get enough. The burger was underwhelming. Service was average. Our waitress was leisurely about getting getting our drink orders, our food, and the bill. Historical bar, so very old fashioned which we thought was great, but restrooms need be updated or restored desperately. Definitely a unique & memorial experience despite the service.

Beer early on a Saturday is something I don't usually do, but hell, it was New Year's Day. I was drinking nearby and a patron at the bar had bought my fiance and I another round. I needed food fast, as otherwise, I was bound to be in pukeville or fall-down-on-face land.
I walked down the street and found the Warren Tavern. From the outside, the structure looks definitively period: historically correct colonial colors with rope and pulley windows.
From the inside, you feel as though you've stepped into a time machine. The interior of the place looks as though the pilgrims arrived off the Mayflower, looked around and said "We need a place to drink" and thus built the Warren Tavern.
The ceilings are low, as are the windows and there are a host of other architectural details, that while I appreciated, I cannot put into words.
Few places exist in this modern world that truly give you a sense of being transported to another time.
Added bonus: a guy works as either a host or manager and he looks like Matt Damon's uncle. How's that for some Irish Boston delights?
I ordered a burger to go: it came fast. I took it back to the other bar down the street to eat. It had a flame broiled taste and came with homemade chips.
The hostess who wrapped up my burger was sweet and remembered to include ketchup, but I was too buzzed to find them.
According to a plaque on the wall, Paul Revere, a frequenter of the tavern, made a speech there in 1784.
Yes.
Such places are rare in this world, dear friend. And only the wise will treasure them. -

This place has it all!!
Curb appeal, history, charm, great food, awesome music!
I love the neighborhood and the outside of the place! The inside was very charming in a historically accurate way. I wasnt starving so I ordered a crock of the (french) onion soup and it was honestly the BEST soup I have ever had. I have had french onion soup from french restaurants that cant even touch this place! We ordered a slice of the raspberry crumble (graham cracker crust, fresh raspberries and a oatmeal crumble on top) with vanilla ice cream and we all but licked the plate clean!
One thing that REALLY bugs me about Boston's "historic" pubs is the modern music--there was a musician performing modern songs (Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, etc.) but he was SO good and because it was being played right there it added to the charm and didn't seem like another pub just capitalizing on "history".
I love this place and cannot wait to come back! -

Took my history buff of a friend here for his birthday lunch. I think it's safe to say that his request for a historical tavern was more than fulfilled. This place is old. I mean old old. I also mean totally awesome. Between the exposed beams, gorgeous floors, cozy fireplaces, and great food, it was definitely better than your average pub. Go here for the atmosphere, go back for the burgers. I got the bacon cheeseburger with fries. I definitely recommend it.
We went with a group of 8. I called ahead for reservations, which they take for groups of 6 or more. It really wasn't too busy, but it was only 1pm on a Saturday and the weather wasn't ideal so that might have had something to do with it. It was pretty small, but that impression might have come more from the layout than anything else. The bar area was pretty big.
Parallel parking on the narrow streets of Charlestown was a bit annoying, but it didn't take long to find a spot.
Good food and really cool/cozy/authentic atmosphere make this a place I will most likely return to. -
Review from Andrew R.
Get the shrimp skewers with cajun seasoning if they have it! It's not on the regular menu - only on the daily menu - but so tasty.
WT is a little pricier for the entrees than I care to pay, especially since nothing really stands out as that special. SO if you're looking to spend less, go with a sandwich or burger (all under $10).
The Veggie Burger tasted great. The pepper jack cheese was unnecessary and a tad on the bland side, so maybe ask for it on the side. And get the cajun mayo on the side because only a little of it was needed. Also, the Warren Tavern garlic mustard (on the table already) is excellent. Slather it on everything.
I must say, the Tavern chips were a disappointment. Some were not crisp at all and the flavor was not as appetizing as I had hoped for homemade chips. The City Square Sandwich had a delicious flavor; however, the chicken was on the dry side. The fries that came with it were better than the chips.
And last but not least...dessert! Oh man, the Raspberry Crumb Pie is good. Here, I'll give you a peek: "Shortbread pie shell and fresh raspberries with an oatmeal/granola topping served with vanilla ice cream." Doesn't that awesome? I mean, screw the ice cream (who needs it?) but that shortbread + oaty granola was king. The raspberry pie is really like one of those fig bars, I'd say. Do yourself a favor and split it with approximately 50 people (or 4) because it's a rich one, kids. -

I was never a clam chowder fan, but, i had to have it here, i mean, i'm in Boston, so, do as a Bostonian would! I will probably never get a bowl of clam chowder as good as this! Waitress was nice, but was a "low talker" (seemed to be the norm in Boston). My husband got the shepherds pie, i got the fish and chips. Food was excellent. I love how old the place is, and the history of it. If i ever get back to Boston, i would definitely go back to Warren's Tavern!

Quite a good spot! Visited on a Monday Night Football evening, this had the usual hoot'n'holler affair, but the bartender was quick and nice, and a beer in hand makes me a happy girl!

Seriously? I haven't reviewed this place yet? Wow, my bad. Considering I live up the street...
The Warren Tavern is that bar that you love to have within walking distance. Whether you're stopping in for 15 minutes just to check out the crowd or in it for the long haul, this is a staple bar in the City of Boston. To the point that my mother, when she heard that I was moving to Charlestown (almost 2 years ago), said "oh, you'll be right near The Warren Tavern - I used to hang out there - man that place is notorious!" Yea, that's how long this place has been around. Actually... it's been a lot longer than that, but I digress.
Food is good, not amazing, but it's not meant to be. Atmosphere is perfect for neighborhood charm. You'll mostly find clusters of after work, late 20-somethings. Oh, and single dudes.... this place is walking distance from MGH's nursing program HQ, so there are tons of weekday nursing students... if you know what I mean.
I need to get to this place more often, for sure. -
Review from Hayley M.
I wish I could say I liked this place. I take that back. I wish I could say I loved it. I love old fashioned and old school decor, and Warren Tavern is straight out of the Colonial time period. You can picture the Minutemen sitting in this Charlestown pub discussing politics. The low ceilings and wood beams add to the authenticity. My problem with this place is that it smelled. Badly. I walked in there as part of a bar crawl, and everyone person I was with commented as we walked through the door. Was a toilet overflowing? Problem with the pipes? Who cares, it smelled and that's all I care about right now. I didn't eat there. I drank one drink and got the hell out of there.
I'd love to go back, and hopefully not deal with the funky smell. I have a feeling I'd love this place otherwise. -

The Warren Tavern is awesome, a true tavern with beer, liquer, wine and fine tavern food. Their menu has a perfect number of items to choose from and you can't go wrong with what you pick.
I would highly recommend their fish and chips, which is fried correctly not in a soggy bready skin like someplaces manage. -

Warren Tavern is a great local pub for anyone living or working in Charlestown. There are no shiny bells or whistles here other than being one of the oldest bars in the country where people like Paul Revere used to down pints.
The food is also pretty decent. Fine dining? No. Good bar food? Yes. The brunch is especially good.
Warren has trivia night on Mondays and can be especially packed on Wednesdays when many times they have some live music in the corner.
Great local pub to have a beer with friends.
