This is right near my house, and very convenient.  The dumplings are tremendous, and seriously I don't throw this around often, it's the BEST General Gao's chicken I've ever had.

Quick, Cheap and convenient.  I've never had them deliver, but if you live in the Magoun Square area, I suggest giving it a try.

How the mighty have fallen.

I've lived in Somerville for 5 years and discovered Wang's not long after moving here.  I was so impressed that I used to bring out of town guests here for the crazy authentic Chinese food in Magoun Sq of all places.  Tonight my husband and I wanted takeout and I suggested Wang's.  He hesitated - which he never, ever does at the mention of dumplings - and said he thought we had a bad experience last time.  It had been a while since we ordered, but I didn't remember why and thought it must have been another restaurant we were confusing it with - Wang's was always solid.  Not anymore (and apparently not a year ago, an experience so bad I apparently erased it from my memory).

Scallion pancakes were thick as wonderbread, dry as saltines and had hardly any scallions.  Easily the worst I've ever had (you've moved to second worst, Kee Kar Lau!  Congratulations.)
Hot and sour soup was also thick as wonderbread.
Moo Shi is usually an underwhelming dish, but Wang's makes it especially so.  Spinach dumplings tasted like absolutely nothing.  I swear things weren't this bad a few years ago.

Yeah, you can get cold kidney wrapped in tofu skin or whatever, but do you really want to?  Two stars because my husband's chicken with thai basil was pretty good.  I have a feeling Wang's is just terrible for vegetarians.  Meat eaters may do OK.

Located on the stretch of Broadway we've affectionately named the Cock Block (Wang's, Pini's and Woody's) - Wang's has some of the best Chinese take out I've had maybe ever.  This place embraces the northern Chinese style of cooking which seems to be altogether less greasy and amazingly delicious.
Wang's has a variety of homemade dumplings -- the pork & leek and the chicken & cabbage are my faves - which you can get by the dozen (steamed or pan fried) or in a frozen bag of 50.  The dumplings alone make Wang's worth the trip up Broadway.
Their combo meals are super affordable and (as with many take-out establishments) the portions are out of this world huge - so if you're looking for a little fried rice and some crab rangoon you will not be disappointed.  They also have a pretty extensive specialty menu which is amazing.

Alright everyone, I get it, this place isn't a lo mein Americanized greasetrap.....too many reviews of this place are similar so let me just state a few things....

The dumplings are delicious if not a tad small.  The shredded beef with hot green pepper....loved it, the amount of heat definitely had me sweating a tad but was not overbearing.  The wonton soup is a bit overseasond.  The delivery is really fast, don't go sit on the john for too long after you order because you might have to run to the door with your pants around the ankles....and the bill definitely is a couple bucks fewer than you expect, so definitely a good value....

If you like Qing Dao Garden on Mass Ave, give this place a try as well for a nice change of pace...

Really disappointed. First off $7.50 for combo seems a bit high, but I don't mind it for good food (which this wasn't). The chicken was dry. The crab rangoon was missing just one thing: crab (not even the cream cheese stuff, there was *nothing* inside these fried pouches)

On top of it, they forgot all the basics with my togo order (no soy, no fork no chopsticks) had to go back to get them.

I am definitely a backer of this place, simply because, as many people have noted, it is not just the normal Americanized-Cantonese restaurant that is so familiar in the US--- they serve more northern-style food, and they cook it without too much grease.

OK, if you are just going out for a bit of egg foo yong and some crab rangoon, then this is not your place, but to draw an analogy, you wouldn't go into a family-style northern italian restaurant and order a hawaiian pizza either, would you?

Restaurants like this comprise less than 1% of all the places you are going to find in town. In all my travels in MA, I have never found another restaurant that was run by people from Shandong, over 3/4 of the time the place is Cantonese,  and if it isn't, then the owners are gonna be from Fujian or Taiwan.

Amazing roast beef noodle soup!  My friend had the pork dumplings and said they were quite good as well.  The decor is eclectic.  Lights (many of them burnt out) in the shape of grape clusters hang around the wall.  Overall, a great, if somewhat unique, dining experience.

Yelpers!  How could you have failed me so?

Really?!?!?  I had to go back and read the reviews again to make sure they weren't incredibly old or something.  Nope.  Perhaps you are just college students that were drunk and therefore couldn't properly assess the quality (or lack thereof) of the food.

Anything that was fried (like the Crab Rangoons and the Vegetable Leek Pie) had a really odd flavor to it like the cooking grease was bad.  The insides of these items were not good either!  The Rangoons were gross and the Leek Pie even grosser.  It sounded so good on the menu but the menu would have been more satisfying if I had chosen to eat it instead.

After throwing the appetizers in the trash, II moved on to the General Gau's Tofu.  This was not an $8 meal.  It was worth $5.  It wasn't gross like the appetizers but it didn't even faintly approach good.  Too bad because I love when Chinese places have vegetarian options like that!

The boiled rice and the Diet Coke did not fail!  Yummy, yummy, in my tummy with a bowl of  cereal to round out my meal since the rest of it wasn't very palatable.  People, I was hungry when this arrived and it still didn't register as even remotely good.

Oh, and Fast?  Nope.  Took my meal forty minutes to arrive, sort of warm.

Don't waste your hard earned money.

Let me preface by mentioning how much I love Chinese food.  I do, and let me tell you about Wangs.  Don't be fooled by the hole in the wall decor or the "fast food" label.  This is not your typical greasy Chinese takeout that leaves you wanting to barf.  This is real authentic Chinese cuisine that will leave you wanting more.

My favorite dish is the green beans and the shredded beef.  As mentioned in other reviews, you need to go out on a limb and order only from the "specials" menu, forget about what your typical order has been at Chinese restaurants in the past.  The dumplings are fresh and are truly a treat.  The take out is just as good as going to the restaurant, and the BYOB is a nice way to save some dough if you do choose to eat at the restaurant!

Enjoy this hole in the wall gem in Somerville

A rare find Chinese place, with more authentic Chinese dishes than others.  I mainly go there for the following fixes:

dumplings (love their leek dumplings, i even get the frozen 50 bag to boil at home)
shao bing (pan fried bread?)
coldcut beef slices
steamed fish
shredded potato in vinegar

makes me think of home.. i appreciate the fact there's one place in boston that provides this kind of comfort food for me. orelse i'd have to go to NYC for it.

I wouldn't normally write a review that references another review, but as the topic of how vegetarians fare at Wang's was raised, I figured I might as well chime in.

I'm a strict vegetarian... and I love Wang's. Ok, I admit it... I've been twice, and as of yet I haven't tried one of the (seemingly plentiful) vegetarian entree options... I have however had the hot and sour soup (vegetarian) twice and tried the dumplings, the spring rolls, and the leek pie once. They were all excellent.

If I were going to sing the praises of anything I've tried at Wang's thus far, it's the hot and sour soup... it's somewhat thin (compared to the very thick hot & sour at one of the local pan-asian vegan places) but extremely tasty.

All in all, I've been extremely impressed by the quality of the food on offer. Perhaps I'll run into problems if I make Wang's my regular place, but thus far I can only say great things (wait, what's this if... I am making Wang's my regular choice for Chinese).

Went there recently and was very, very pleased!

Here's my advice from people "in the know". Order from the northern Chinese "specials" menu. In particular we had leek, chinese vegetable, and spinach dumplings that were $5.95 (for 12!!!) and super tasty.

And take an adventure and get the rarer leek pie over the scallion pancake.

The bottom-line is that you can go to any Tom, Dick & Harry Chinese place for Americanized crab rangoons, and General Gau, but why waste an opportunity. Sure you can get that stuff here, but it's time and small lil' places like this that challenge us to think outside the box and try some new treats.

Remember the northern Chinese specials menu. It's good!

I am getting Wang's at least twice a month, but usually take-out. They have no liquor license, but a (bad) liquor store is in the same block for emergencies. The place lets you bring in your own booze, but I prefer my own stuff at home.

What to order? Okay - First you want to skip any dish that you may recognize from most other Chinese restaurants' menu and zoom in on their specials. Watch the board or ask!!! My favorites start with their unbelievable authentic home made dumplings. Then I add
Sliced potatoes with pepper which are super yummy
Sweet and Sour Shredded Turnip (not just during the summer)
Kidney with Cucumber in Chili Sauce (yes - it tastes so much better than it sounds)
Soft Bean Curd Skin
Smoked Fish
Fried Meat Buns (surprise - I generally prefer steamed buns, but Wang's is the one place where I get them fried at least half the time)

Where do they loose a star? It is just not the place for a romantic dinner and they cannot accommodate big parties.

Hey, pretty good. I hadn't read reviews of Wang's before stopping in, so I unfortunately didn't know to order the dumplings, or exclusively off the specials menu, but mistakes aside, the food was definitely not bad.

If normal mushroom chicken dishes have a light drizzle of mushrooms, Wang's black mushroom chicken was a mushroom monsoon. Which lowers the filling metric (which greasy heavy Chinese food is usually a sure bet on), but more than makes up for it in flavor explosion. The moo shi we ordered was also fabulous, but the beef dish (yu shang, I think?) was weirdly over-sweetened, and definitely forgettable.

We ate in, which I guess is not what Wang's is really *for*, but it did afford us the chance to watch the dumpling factory in the back. Seriously, though, there was so much dumpling making going on, I'm surprised they have room for any other food. The old Chinese woman filling and folding has clearly been doing this for longer than I've been alive, and has her shit down. I'm always impressed when someone's been doing one task for so long that it's like a solved science. There is one best way to do it. I feel bad reviewing the process and spectacle without actually being able to weigh in on the final result, but the unceasing precision -- and the three people who came in just to order dumplings during my meal -- will definitely pull me back to try some.

Wang's is clearly not going to be courting a Michelin star anytime soon, but it is pretty solid quick Chinese food, and I get the feeling that exploring some of the more exotic items on the menu will raise my opinion a notch higher.

Just wrote a long review that didn't get saved or uploaded for some reason (argh!) so this will be shorter than deserved.  Bottom line: wife and I tried delivery from Wang's tonight for a change and to see how they were.  We will not be going back.  Nothing horrible about the experience, and there were some high points: yes, the dumplings are good, and the crab rangoons were crispy, but very much lacking in filling.

However, the two entrees (orange crispy chicken and cashew chicken) were both blah, with the latter being unseasoned and lacking sauce.  The lo mein and fried rice were downright awful, both having a burnt vegetable smell and taste that we've never experienced before.

We felt bad because we had a friend over and she was subjected to our experiment as well.  My recommendation: go to East Asia.  The dumplings just don't make up for everything else.

Sorry, I don't like the dumplings. Maybe they're fresh, they seemed like they were. But flavor? It was seriously lacking. Not enough soy sauce in the world could make those taste good.
Crab rangoons...still no good. There is hardly any filling--or crab for that matter.
Sesame chicken was OK, but that's a tough one to screw up. My man had the lo mein and he would give this place negative five stars if possible, since he spent the next day with food poisoning. Poor fella.

Sorry Wangs, definitely not the best of Somerville.

Sure the selection is amazing and the dumplings are great ... however, the good things have been compromised by not-so-good things:

There were big clumps in our rice!  Who gets clumps in their rice?? I've hadn't had clumpy rice from a restaurant in ages!  Actually wait ... I mean NEVER.  Small detail, I know, but kinda annoying.

Dumplings are kinda expensive.  $13 for 50 pieces?  It sounds like a lot of dumplings, but it's really not that much.  Sure they taste better, but they cost twice as much as for the same amount of pre-packaged frozen dumplings (pretty good ones, too).

We also got the fired (fried?) pig intestine with peppers and the sweet and sour pork.  The pork was kinda tough, but I don't normally order sweet and sour dishes, so I don't really know how it's supposed to be.  The pig intestine with peppers was pretty good though, but be warned for those who haven't had the dish before: they're NOT bell peppers.  They're actual peppers--I'd say it's semi-spicy ... at least for me.

I'd come back again, but just for take-out.  I'm making my own rice.  :P

I absolutely love Wangs and have been getting delivery from them regularly since I moved to Somerville two years ago.

You should know that they are closed on TUESDAY so if you're craving dumplings on Monday, you damn well better order them which is exactly what I did last night.

I always order the Chinese vegetable dumplings and sometimes I get them pan-fried, sometimes I get them steamed. Either way, they're freakin' amazing.

I also usually order the General Tsau tofu extra spicy with extra peppers. Last night I received extra peppers but it wasn't as off-the-charts spicy as I would have liked. Still so delicious though.

The delivery is insanely fast. They're not goofin' around calling themselves Wangs Fast Food.

Also, as you can probably tell from my previous reviews of late-night Chinese establishments, I have no tolerance for crappy for Chinese food since I apparently have an MSG/gross food allergy, and I have never ever been grossed out or disappointed by Wangs. And they're easy on my ever decreasing wallet.

Do yourself a favor-- buy a 50-count of their pork and leek dumplings, a half pint of the ginger sauce, and a bigger belt.

They are fantastic, especially if you toss them in a pan with a little oil after boiling. Sure, it's a little bit of work for a delivery or pick up order, but it's worth it, especially if you have a few people over.

No, there is no relation between this Wang and that Wang nor Wang Computer. As if all Wang's were the same Wang. Phesh! Now, let's get down to business.

The Barebones: Forget ambience, forget service, it's all about the food and how curteously you can get it.
Northern Chinese Cuisine - Fair assessment.
Dumplings - Pretty darn tasty. Get the green bean w/ pork or potstickers. It's a lot less doughy than Qingdao Garden. The ladies making dumplings in the kitchen reminds me of the dumpling houses back home in Beijing.
Best Side Dish - Garlic cucumbers, what else are ya gonna eat dumplings with??
Dumpling Sauce - Never. Dude, get with the locals, use the vinegar, it's already on your table.
Best Thing On A Cold Day - Dofu nao. Slightly spicy, super flavorful, warm and easy going down.
Best Veggie - Sprouts in vinegar. Traditional to the letter.
Best Out of the Ordinary - Eel with leek.
Best Meat - Chicken w/ Thai basil.

The owner remembers your face, voice and phone number...now isn't that a little scary? Last time I had delivery he wondered if I was ordering too much food for my usual...hehehe...little does he know about my hollow leg problem.

Best Advice: Ask the staff for translations and order off the Chinese menu.

Shoutout to Tom E: "Wassup roomie?!"

Last two Saturday nights I've been stuffing myself full of Wangs. It's a great feeling, everyone should try it.

Don't let the name put you off, this is home-cooked, handcrafted food and although it's bare-bones in the dining area, give it a try rather than just getting a delivery - the food comes hot and fresh and there is free tea and a friendly family to chat with. You can buy booze at the liquor store next door too. Plus it's open very late.

The dumplings get a LOT of praise here and they're good but there's more. Like with many Chinese restaurants avoid the sections on the menu labeled 'beef' or 'chicken' and instead stick to the house specials, the specials board (which is in Chinese - good luck with that) and most importantly... the back page (small dishes).

By roomie from Beijing says this is the best mid-Chinese cuisine in Camberville and I'm not going to argue. In fact I'm going to join her in that praise and give major props out to the following:
: Dry cumin lamb (spicy and salty)
: Northern-style spare rib
: Shanghai cabbage with mushrooms
: Sweet red-bean rice soup desert
: The soft fresh beancurd/tofu soup (AMAZING)
: Smashed cucumber with garlic

As a final word - try to visit the bathroom, you'll get to walk through the kitchen and say hi to the family as they wrap up myriads of dumplings.

I'm giving this place 4 stars, but it is more like 4.5.

The actual restaurant is not much to look at. Tired dark carpet (??) bad lighting, folding tables and chairs, room for about 10-15 people. Not exactly a inviting ambiance. The food, however, is wonderful.

So far, we have tried the dumplings (obvs), orange chicken, general gao's chicken, the broccoli, fried rice, noodles, and crab rangoon. We also just ordered a bag of frozen dumplings for a rainy day. With the exception of the crab dish, everything was flavorful, not too oily, generously portioned and not too pricey.

If you live in the area, there is no reason to schlep to Davis for sub par Chinese food. Take a walk and pick it up. FYI - there is a $1.50 delivery charge and a $15 credit card minimum.

No matter what you get, order a side of dumplings. You won't be sorry.

I usually judge a Chinese restaurant by the quality of the crab rangoons. Wang's rangoons are sadly subpar, but they have the best dumplings I have ever had. Several different varieties of dumplings, all delicious. My roommates and I swear by this place. Dumps ftw.

Many thumbs up and full bellied groans came from my comfy leather couches  after Emma D, Russ & I scarfed down a shit load of this delicious, hot, greasy Chinese. I highly recommend the Crispy Orange Chicken and the beef fried rice, and the spring rolls are most pleasant. Consistently delicious Sunday movie night food. Excellent delivery. Quick service and the best combination of cheap, delicious and comforting in Somerville.

If you need Chinese, get Wang's to whip it out for you.

I dragged David here one night after reading all the yelp reviews on how Wang's dumplings are amazing. Well, I truly disagree. I really didn't know what to expect and was surprised at how much of a dump this place looked like. I should have bolted for the door when I realized that this was going to be an American Chinese restaurant, but I decided to continue on my dumpling journey. I really despise American Chinese food because it's not real Chinese food.

The entire establishment only has around 10 tables at the most and on the night I came only two of them were filled. Even though it wasn't busy, no one bothered to come and greet me. We decided that we would just take the frozen dumplings to go and cook them at home. I ordered the pork and leek dumplings along with the beef dumplings. The dumplings were really small and the flavor was just okay. I could have made better dumplings myself.

Yup, probably the best Chinese food I've had yet. I found this place on Yelp too! I ordered the small size of the beef and mushrooms (I can only fathom how big the large was) and was stuffed. It was fresh, not greasy and reasonably priced. But when I went to pick it up, there was very little parking...in fact, none, when I went. I did a turnaround at the 7-11 and then hovered until someone left. So next time, I think I will have it delivered. But there will definitely be a "next time"!

I'm so glad I was able to strong arm my friends into trying Wang's the other night.  Mmmmm....

First- I can't believe they have an entire page of their menu devoted to Chinese dumplings and ravioli.  Plus a section that's just in Chinese.  Probably where all the good stuff is.  We had 12 of the pork and cabbage dumplings.  Darn good.

Second - awesome food and not the fastest but decent delivery time.  The dinner meals are a great deal.  My beef dish had nice fresh veggies and was spicy like I like.  The star was Shannon's orange crispy chicken though.  Maybe not authentic, but spicy with real bits of orange peel.  Addictive!

Wow!  The food from Wang's is fantastic, they're open late, and they deliver super fast!  My friend Meghan recommended this place and since she's right about most things (not all, mind you, but most), we decided to order from Wang's.  Not to mention Meghan's actually from Somerville, so when she says it's the best Chinese nearby, she knows what she's talking about.  (Side note: I'm trying to convince her to become a Yelper...no luck yet...)

I had a shrimp dish (sorry, I'm forgetting the name right now--I'll update this with more info) and loved it even though it was sweet (not what I usually like).  It was an unusual, perfect blend of sweet and sour and had shrimp without the tails (makes it less fishy & gives you more shrimp to enjoy!)  Very tasty!

Even better than the shrimp dish were the leek dumplings!  Wow!  Wow!  Wow!  If I lived in Somerville I would get fat on these in no time.  Little.  Cute.  Delicious.  You really could just pop one after another into your mouth.  So small!  So tasty!  Definitely get these pan fried, it's worth the extra grease.  Next time I'm in Somerville, I'm going to leave extra room in my suitcase (and an ice pack) and bring home a bag of frozen dumplings.  No, really, they're *that* good.

I'll definitely be back for more!

This is my favorite Tufts area family-owned restaurant. You would assume from the name that they'd only specialize in typical americanized chinese fast food, but you would be absolutely WRONG!

This place is great if you have the right expectations. This isn't the typical Boston Chinatown affair. You should be here to enjoy the laid-back self-serve ambiance of BYOB and hot jasmine tea in styrofoam cups. Both of which I LOVE.

Then, try the various boiled dumplings (vegetarian is avaiable) which are a specialty from Northern China. Impress your friends with that tidbit. I really fell for this place that after my first visit, I had to return the next evening to relive the gastronomical experience. I love the fried butter fish (edible in its entirety - bones and all) and the garlic cucumber salad.

What I find more alluring is that from your seat you can see the cute family in the kitchen furiously churning out all those handmade dumplings! Reminds me of my mom.

First ever Yelp "find". I have never been happy with Chinese delivery, so this time around it was time to see what Yelp had to say. Wang's came out on top, and it's a step above any other delivery in the area. Not fantastic, mind you (stale fortune cookies), but still very good. The Gen. G's is indeed yummy and the dumpings are as advertised--I am never buying frozen "potstickers" again. Next time I order from Wang's I am going to get the frozen 100-count pork/scallion dumpling order (for like $25) and freeze them for future consumption. For real. They are that good. And really, who need fortune cookies, anyway?

Thank you, Yelp people!

Just an update: I got delivery from here yesterday and when everything arrived it was still too hot too eat. And I don't mean that kind of "just out from under the heat lamp" kinda hot--this was right out of the wok hot. Granted, I live less than 5 minutes away, but the delivery is truly impressive. Absolutely delicious.

Sometimes I get home from a long day of work and don't feel like cooking. At work, we often get sandwiches or pizza, so sometimes, i just want Chinese food.

I know Chinese food snobs will disagree, but "American" Chinese food is one of the ultimate comfort foods. Unfortunately, with a new place, you don't know if you're going to get a decent meal or a pile of grease.

Wangs is definitely the former. It's fast, it's consistent, and I've never had a bad experience. It's not fancy, but I always know it will be good.  And they deliver late, which is key.

I have to knock it down for two reasons: they are not open Tuesdays and their crab rangoon have onions in them.

I like the food here but Its not my place to sit down and enjoy. Rather take away. Dinner specials are the best value. Decent food.
A big thanks to fellow Yelper Pixy I for pointing out this fine Chinese BYOB establishment. Please see my Yelp list for other fine (and Not so fine) BYOB restaurants throughout New England.

Hmmm
I dunno
Just tried one of the veggie and one of the meat dumplings with high hopes and basically had them dashed
The dough is nice and light, but the fillings were absolutely flavorless.
The scallion pancake was oily and also tasted of nothing but flour
My kids were the tasters and they ended up asking for carrots, which means that they were desperate for something palatable.
For dumplings, I'm sticking with Qingdao: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
and for scallion pancake I'm just going to keep walking down the street to Mary Chung

Been to this place twice and it was decent "is what it is" kind of Chinese food. However, while eating my leftover pork fried rice tonight, I bit into something weird. I spat it out and expected to see a fingernail, but thankfully...it was just a bent staple.

Uh...ok.

A friggin' bent staple in my rice. F--- this place forever.

Now that Zoes has become erratic, this is the best of the Chinese store-front dives in the Cambridge/Somerville area.   Mostly a take-out place, the table service is pleasant, attentive and competent.   So far, everything I've had here has been great.

Tea is pour it yourself in Styrofoam cups - a nice extra if you are waiting for take out, a minus if you are sitting down for a meal.   Tip: They will give you a real cup or glass if you ask for it.

My husband and I both had upset stomachs after we ate here. There was a funny greasy aftertaste, even to the dumplings which were otherwise good in terms of consistency and ingredients.

Food is very good -- all sorts of things you'll never see on your "typical" Chinese (American) menu.  For instance, had some dish with sea cucumber last time I was there.  Curiosity got the best of me -- I won't order it again.

Do yourself a favor though, and take-out.  The service is painfully slow and I found myself distracted by the totally awful order wafting from the dirty carpet.  Kind of place where you stick to the table.  Ick!

But, good dumplings.

Food, 4 stars
Restaurant experience, 1 star

But food trumps for 3 stars.

I had no great expectations for this place, but they are unexpectedly quite good.  They have a bunch of Northern Chinese specialties and a fair amount of standard American Chinese dishes.

Their dumplings are fresh and tasty, and they have several varieties which you can buy frozen and bagged.  They deliver and do take out. You can eat in the restaurant, too, but it's probably way better for take-out.

I am craving their tofu string with chive *right now*. yum!
