Can I please take a moment or two to tell you guys how stoked I am to stumble upon this place on Yelpniverse???

I was Ms. Itinerary for my friends when I lived in NY. I knew where to eat, where to drink and play. So when my friends were expecting an agenda from me during my quick weekend back to the city, they were surprised that I had nothing--except a must-visit to Wang Chen's Table Tennis Club.

So I dragged a couple of folks up to W100 with me, constantly letting them know that I really don't know what to expect. And when we arrived, this place is actually a well established hang out with an actual awning! I knew we would come off like a group of silly girls in street clothes crashing into a serious athlete club, so I wasn't shocked that he sent us to one of the tables in the basement. Ha.

Before we went downstairs, we noticed that KEANU REEVES PLAYS HERE. Yes that is right!!!! He was here for 5 days straight in January!! The guy said that he's not that good, but wow was I excited......... oh yeah, John McEnroe plays here too...

Anyway. Wang Chen is a local coach and top ranked women's table tennis player and former Olympian. Her club has 7 tables and you can play as a walk-in for $8/hr or $75/mo if you are hard-tothe-core. They open late until 10 all week except for Sundays. Private lessons are available. Atmosphere is very friendly so it's definitely a good place to play for kicks or to sharpen your skillz. My friends and I all sucked, but we had so much fun!  A NYC gem for sure, in my book.

P.S. Don't be afraid to come here with your gear on!

I love that this place merely exists.  I find it heartwarming that in the hustle and bustle city, there is a mom-and-pop shop whose home computer-printed signs taped to the door advertise a space for folks to come play some ping-pong on one of three tables.  I walk by this place almost every day and am charmed by the sight of old men hilariously dressed in their old men athletic clothing, young kids thrilled with their developing hand-eye coordination, and, on occasion, people who appear to be serious athletes dripping with sweat as they violently swat at balls (and then they actually get around to playing some table tennis... oh! insert comedic drum roll).  I've never even been inside.

I walk past this place several times a day on some days, considering I live down the block. I love the people inside, sweating profusely in their intricate sports gear and slamming ping pong balls back and forth. It truly reminds me that it is better to die like a tiger than to live like a pussy!
