4 reviews for Walt's Hitching Post
I went with my grandparents across the river for dinner at Walt's Hitching Post. I could tell I was in Kentucky when we were asked at the door if we preferred smoking or non-smoking seating. Although it was a Wednesday night and not all that busy, my grandfather said that you "used to have to wait outside," but nowadays Walt's isn't very busy.
Walt's specializes in steak, chicken, deep-fried shrimp but their main specialty is Walt's Famous Baby Back Ribs, "deliciously smoked" in an open pit. I ordered the regular (9) for $16.99, while it also came in whole (12- $18.99) and half (6- $13.99) orders. It came with two sides: I chose French fries (pretty good) and a side salad with Ranch dressing (okay). I love Montgomery Inn ribs so all other ribs go on my scale of 1 to Montgomery Inn. I'd say 6.5 for Walt's. They were very good, but they were smaller/there was less pork and they were tough, making me work a little harder than I would have liked.
My grandparents, meanwhile, ordered combinations of two from a list of four items ($15.99 each I think): my grandfather getting shrimp and chicken and my grandmother getting ribs and shrimp. I believe they both ordered baked potatoes and coleslaw and enjoyed their food, especially my grandfather. I don't like coleslaw but even I thought theirs was pretty good. My grandfather also got some ice cream, while I ordered a chocolate-peanut butter cake which was a little to dry for me. They also serve cheesecake.
Walt's is in its 50th year and I liked its old décor including dim lighting, wooden wall paneling, old rifles and horse saddles on the walls. The service was also very good and both the waitress and bus boys were prompt and very friendly. It was nice that Walt's Hitching Post wasn't all that crowded although it's kind of sad that it's not as busy as it used to be. Either way, I had a good experience at the Fort Mitchell restaurant.
The best ribs in cincinatti area. Service is acceptable. My fam gets seafood and steak & they'te always pleased. But u cant beat the ribs.
I read on Citysearch that Walt's Hitching Post was the #1 spot for ribs in Cincinnati, so I decided to give it a try by ordering some takeout.
After eating the ribs myself, I'm convinced that Walt himself is the one writing the reviews on Citysearch. The ribs were tough and the building is one step up from a local VFW. On the bright side, the food was hot, ready on time, and reasonably priced.
The steak was perfect - the bread was great - the salad not so much and the service was slow slow slow...If you want a steak - go for it - $13.95 for the petite ribeye was a good deal. Mac & cheese was pretty good but lacked salt.
