One of my favorite spots for music shopping in town. What they lack in size they make up for in having some of the most obscure music I can think of. I love looking through their bins for some crazy glitch record that I can't find anywhere else. The electronic CD section is one of the best in town and the staff knows a ton about music and will point you toward something new and exciting which is rare in a music store now. Lots of art and zines. Only gripe would be finding parking in the area and that everything is priced appropriately (which is a good thing unless your a used record fiend like myself who gravitates toward places that he can find hidden gems for super cheap). A must go for music lovers in the city.

I can't get in and out of here without spending a shameful amount of money!

WoS gets really rare and AWESOME vinyl and CDs - from old-school Bauhaus, Legendary Pink Dots, etc to current Autechre and other ambient, glitchy stuff.  Also, Limited Edition stuff that has packaging hand-made by the artists, etc.

Plus they have really cool in-store performances and interesting art shows (and art show openings).

Anyway, you should be on their email lists. They way you'll find out about all this cool stuff first!  And, if you see a new Ltd Ed item in the email, you can call and put it on hold before anyone else gets it!!

Love 'em.

I just walked in to Wall of Sound for the first time after only passing by and admiring their window display for a couple years. I was looking for something relatively obscure -- 20 Jazz Funk Greats by Throbbing Gristle... they didn't have it but the guy behind the counter new exactly what I was talking about, knew the year and record label it was released on even.

What surprised me was how genuinely friendly he was, he said he'd be happy to order it for me, but I was itching to get it ASAP so I declined and my hunt continued. Anyway, I buy almost all my music through iTunes and other digital outlets nowadays for the convenience and because I was always bothered by the cooler-than-thou attitude of most record shop personal.

My brief experience at Wall of Sound made me want to come back and start buying music from a brick and mortar shop again, which I just might do. So, from what I can tell, if you hate dealing with hipster creeps that make you feel unwelcome when buying music this is the place for you.

This shop used to be an anchor down in Belltown way back in the day but now has moved up on the Hill.

The staff is always super friendly and they carry an excellent supply of hard to find and experimental music.  If they don't have what you want they can get it for you. If you don't know what you want their suggestions never disappoint -

Also this shop has excellent in-store art on display (look for the opening parties) plus they also host monthly Wall of Sound music nights at the Rendezvous Jewelbox -

Go!

Jeff has done a lot with this store since he took it over and moved it from Belltown to Capitol Hill a few years ago. This is the place to shop for the latest and greatest Dance, World and Experimental cd's. If it's strange and hard to find, Jeff will have it or he will order it for you. Jeff has a lot of knowledge when it comes to obscure music and he is great to talk with.

The vinyl racks are small but what you will find here has been carefully chosen and organized properly so there is no filler.

It's hard to find parking here and you won't find it for free so feed those meters people 'cause the terminator meter-maids know no shame and you will get a ticket.

This is just a few doors up from Bauhaus Coffee which is a great place to grab a cup of joe and people watch. When on Capitol Hill, this is a must visit. See you there!

Absolutely love this place. An excellent selection of odd records, CDs, zines and more. This is where I go when I am shopping for ambient, experimental music. Definitely the best selection of modern music and sound art that Seattle has to offer. Also tons of rare music form around the world. Excellent used section as well. Not filled with a bunch of bargain-bin rubbish that most used sections consist of. If you can't find it here they can probably order it.  I used to go here more when they were in Belltown. Now that they are on Capital Hill it is a little more out of my way.

This is the record store to go to if you only make it to one record store in this city. Friendly people who know a TON about music. This is the way it was meant to be. This is my Utopian record store dream.  Just pick up a random CD that you have never heard of, base your decision on the cover art alone, and see how it will be the new soundtrack to your otherwise miserable life.

What Wall of Sound lacks in depth of selection, they make up for in quality. It's a small, boutique sized record shop on Capitol Hill that caters mainly to the more esoteric musical styles, while still stocking enough indie rock to satisfy the casual listener. This is where you wold go to pick the import version of Return to Cookie Mountain before its official US release, or to get that new Kid 606 12" single. Good but limited selection of used vinyl, and music-related magazines (think Wire and The Big Takeover, not Spin or the NME).

A small but eclectic shop with friendly staff. I have only bought LPs here so far, and both the new and used sections contain some interesting stuff. I usually don't go here with anything specific in mind, but always walk out with something good. They also have the best window displays.

Great for rare & obscure music, collector's items, and employees who know a lot about music in general. If it's a genre you won't hear on most radio stations, chances are it's here. They carry neat art, vinyl, indie zines, etc. They've been around for 17 years and migrated to Capitol Hill relatively recently.

We wandered in here after brunch one Sunday. They have an interesting selection and fabulous posters on the walls. I don't think there was any music playing, which is weird, especially for a record store. If you're walking by, it's worth a stop.

A smaller music store with a limited selection of indie and somewhat obscure music. That's not to say that this place isn't worth a visit, because it definitely is, but don't go here expecting to find radio's trendy flavour of the week, because you probably won't. It's hard to define the sort of music that they sell here, so if you're looking for something different, or something you haven't heard before, stop in and take a look.

A very limited selection of mostly obscure music. I went in looking for some jazz records and left pretty disappointed. But if you're looking for something different, this would probably be your place to go. But if you're looking for your basic record shop, go somewhere else!

My favorite place to go when I'm looking for new or obscure music. The staff can suggest cds of you're not sure what to look for. They also sell tons of strange magazines and have live shows occasionally. Go there and keep this place in business!!

Love this place - find stuff you never would have found anywhere else. I especially appreciate that they value really good music over the esoteric/unique thing. Love that you can listen to everything, too.

Jeff's selection is great, and I know I can wander in there with just a vague name of something, and he'll know what I'm talking about. Viva la small record shops! Save up your list from iTunes and go buy them in person from Wall of Sound!
