This is a great spot to grab a quick & funky gift and/or card for someone. It's small but somehow I always spend more time than i intend b/c the selection is so good and there's always one more cool book, card, squeek toy, clock, tschotchke or bauble beckoning.
ps--owner//staff have always been friendly and helpful in my experience.
This place is great! All you people who dissed the owner--I'll bet you were talking on your fing cell phones the whole time you were in the shop. The owner hates that. I hate that. Anyone with any sense hates that. Hang up, grow up, and enjoy this very cool store and its unconventional owner.
Sheesh! Retail is tough, so lighten up.
Over the years I have gotten good gifts here but have to agree with others that the owner and the tall guy are unpleasant. I was going to stop by there tomorrow, before going to the Uptown - so I will see if the recession has changed their attitudes: less arrogance and more humility, perhaps? We shall see...
I'm torn about this place because on the one hand the gifts are fun and unique, but on the other hand, the staff (esp. the woman who owns it) is downright rude and condescending. I always feel rushed and unwelcome in the store. If I pick something up in the store, the woman immediately yells across the store about how great the item is. If it weren't for her I would go more frequently.
Oh, and yes, the prices are steep but considering its prime location and being a local business it is understandable. Rudeness, however, is not!
This is a great store!! Every time I'm in Washington DC, I make sure I go in and see what's new and different and I always leave with something fun. They have a wonderful selection of jewelry and gifts and baby stuff and fun, silly things. It's the perfect place to find unusual gifts because they really do have something for everyone. I just bought myself a "Dust Bunny", a dusting mitt in the shape of the cutest little bunny!
I have never had a problem with any of the staff, they are friendly and helpful and have always been pleasant to me.
In response to some comments here about the store being "pricey", it depends on what you consider affordable. This is a small store, not Target or Wal-Mart, and much of what they sell is handmade which naturally comes at a higher price. I would say they sell quality merchadise at a fair price. If you want cheap junk, go elsewhere.
I always wind up browsing here if I am in this hood to go to a flick at Uptown or chow down some sushi at Spices. I found an espresso mug here a few years ago that I love, and I use it every day (the mug is huge and it is perfect for a bowl of soup or ice cream).
Suzie has a good selection of handmade jewelry and other fun gifts such as unique finger puppets and nostalgic metal lunchboxes. There's also some cool light switch covers here as well as unique mugs and plates -- like my espresso mug -- that serve multi purposes.
I love this type of store. There aren't enough of them in this city. I kept on telling myself to go in but never did until Friday when I needed to pick up a "future Democrat" bib I'd seen in the window a while ago. Unfortunately they were out, but they did have baby hats and onesies that proudly exclaimed the baby's future political affiliation. $25 was a bit steep, I'll admit, but this declaration is of utmost importance, so I went with it (ok I also promised the dad that I'd get it, so I was trapped!). I was also so happy to find THE perfect Christmas cards to send out. There's all kinds of entertaining stuff to look at and I laughed out loud at a few things. Anne Taintor gets me every time. The guy who was working was really nice; I guess I didn't have the joy of meeting the dreaded owner everyone else is talking about.
I love the uniqueness of the stuff found at this store. I mean, where else in DC can you find pink flamingo plant ornaments?? But the prices make me not love it. Things are way over priced. The one great advantage this store has over all the other stores is it gathers all the eclectic crap that you have to venture to several places to get, all in one store.
I do agree that the sales-persons are a little uptight. I felt rushed and completely unwelcome, it was mere days before the holidays, and the store only had a few shoppers.
I live right near this place, and while I initially thought it was a store for cracked-out grandmas (and, well, let's face it... it kind of is), it's also pretty friggin' cool.
They've got a ton of useless junk, useful junk, fun gifts, odd decorations, and other random things. I like to go in and browse every once in a while, usually when they change the theme (varies from season to season, holiday to holiday).
The sales associates can vary in their attitudes/personalities. Some are abrasive and in your face about your time there, as in borderline rude unless you're going to buy something, while others are incredibly helpful and nice about what you're looking for.
It's a great place for gift exchange items, or really for anything random that you'd like to send in the mail to a loved one. I like this store and what this store represents (http://www.clevelandpa...), and I will gladly patronize them instead of a Target or Hallmark store.
Amusing, cute gifts. Overpriced of course, but I guess if you need a funny little trinket in a pinch, this would be a good place to go. The older lady (the owner?) is a little bit snippy and cold, but it's easy to ignore her with so many cool items to look at.
Cute! Cute! Cute! This little shop has some adorable gift giving potential. Baby clothes and items, dishware, jewelry, and really unique items without a category can be found here. What can't be found here, not easily at least, is parking. This cute shop is along the same strip as Ardeo/Bardeo, Lavandou and Vace where parking is at a premium. I highly recommend it though when you are shopping for that certain something for that certain someone who is hard to shop for.
Love this store, although the staff scare me. Great place to find gifts or just have a laugh at some of the crazy products (12" Post-its, what?). For a while, the store carried Matt & Nat bags and shoes (Matt & Nat is my fave vegan handbag company) but those are sadly gone. :(
If you are looking for a gift for that quirky off-the-wall person in your life, or even for someone who you don't know that well, then this is the place for you to find that gift. You have a great time shopping around and are bound to leave with something that will make you laugh, generate memories, and/or just make you feel like you found something unique that no one else will own.
This is definitely one of the best gift shops around -- jewelry, household items, stuff you don't need but can't help but want, and more. Similar to Chocolate Moose, ArtCraft, and LaMuse.
Love love love this little gem!!! Such a neat variety of gifts, jewelry, homewares and accessories. Every time I pass this place they have a new line up in the window of eye catching items that always get me in the door. If you are looking for a gift or card that will stand out from the other someone gets, this is the place. The staff can be kind of weird at times, but what do you want for a store full of odd items.
I absolutely adore this place. It's full of fun, creative, unique gifts and I'm so glad I was able to discover it last weekend. I just purchased a cute set of salt & pepper shaker for my friend's wedding gift (a bit pricey though) I'll be going back as often as I can for friends weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and etc.
