Honolulu, HI
If Happiness was a food it would be shave ice from Waiola Shave Ice :D Why do I love this shave ice more than the rest? It is because of the light fluffy snow they shave at this establishment that makes all the difference. There is no chunks and since it is so fluffy it holds the syrup so much better too! The ice just melts on your tongue!
My favorite flavor here is Anything (rainbow most of the time) with condensed milk drizzled on top and vanilla ice cream/adzuki beans on the bottom. The strawberry cream is also great! I know I am not the only one who thinks this place is gold because there is always a line out in front! -
Review from Maggie C.
Bookmarked for years and I was disappointed It was the worst shaved ice ever for me.
You get 2 flavors instead of 3 and the LARGE cup is small.
Ordered guava and haupia.
Texture: the texture is very soft. I would probably rate this higher if I never had shaved snow. LA's shaved snow is much better than this. I also found a big chunk of unshaved ice and almost choked on it.
Flavor: I couldn't taste any guava or haupia. It was flavorless shaved ice. They really need to fix these syrups or maybe I got the wrong flavors.
Mochi: I added mochi toppings for $.50 and got 7 tiny mushy balls. I like soft mochi but this was ridiculously mushy.
The lady was so impatient when she asked for the money. Don't worry lady, you would get your $3. I wouldn't run away with your shaved ice. There was nobody behind me anyways. She wasn't friendly too when she took my order.
Easy parking. This place has more seating area than Matsumoto and it's nice to have the seats separated for more privacy. The place is not crowded and it's very relaxing.
2 stars!!
Waiola is not yummylicious!!Listed in: Oahu with Maggie C

Best shave ice, according to Sara P.
I'd say it's a very, very close second to Matsumoto's shave ice, but only because I like the texture of M's ice better.
Waiola's shave ice is literally like eating cream, because it's so, so finely shaved and nicely packed. I'm not sure it's possible to get a "bad" flavor of shave ice, so my rainbow concoction was perfect with vanilla ice cream.
Dear Waiola, please make your "large" size bigger for fatties like me. Thanks.Listed in: On a vacation HI

Too bad not better bc close to home. Street parking a hassle. Lines are long. Prices high for small portion. Not enough syrup - naked ice is a shave ice sin! Eh. Try Shimazu http://www.yelp.com/bi... & make your own conclusions.

No need to go to Matsumoto on Haleiwa. You dont have to fight the lines, flies and bugs that tend to visit Matsumoto. It's "da spot" in town. -

Best shave ice on Oahu.
Been going here since I was 5. Amazing how the workers still look the same.
I've never seen snow before, but I would imagine it's almost as soft as the shave ice at Waiola, not as delicious of corse.
If you think that Shave Ice from North Shore is the best on the island, then you're wrong. -
Review from Lai T.
If I lived closer to Waiola, I'd probably end up with diabetes. Yes, the shaved ice here is THAT good :) In fact, I have a no sharing policy when it comes to Waiola simply because the fatty in me cannot get enough of the melt-in-your-mouth shaved ice. My favorite flavors are lychee, lilikoi, & POG.
Oh, and have you ever tried the Azuki bowl here? It is like a magical love song composed by someone who knows just how to woo my sweet tooth! I substituted the syrup flavors for strawberry and lychee because I'm not a fan of milk flavored shaved ice, but everything else was perfect. The best part of the bowl? Personally, I loved the mochi balls because they are not like the typical mochi balls you find at other shaved ice places-these reminded me of the mochi balls you'd find in che xoi nuoc (a Vietnamese dessert) minus the ginger sauce. For some reason, they taste fresh to me :pListed in: It was love at first bite!

I have been going here ever since I was kid, and Waiola's has stayed exactly the same:
Run down, hole in the wall, no gimmick, DELICIOUSNESS.
If you are looking for the best shave ice, come here. (Went to Matsumoto's...nope, way overated imo). It melts as soon as it touches your tongue. No chunky, icy, crunchy, watered-down, flavorless mess (aka the stuff they serve on the mainland)...instead, you get smooth delicious flavors because they pour the syrup on heavy and the flavoring is actually ABSORBED by the ice because it is shaved ever so fine!
There is a huge range of flavors and add-ons (ice cream, mochi? I'm in love.), but my favorite combo is an ice cream bowl with the flavor "Obama's Rainbow" (Lilikoi, Lime, and Strawberry I think). YUM. And the bowl is huge for under $5! Nowhere else have I tried that can get anything even close to this perfection. NOM. -

One of my first shave ice awakening experience happened here. Never cared for shave ice in my life until I had tasted their custard ice. Thank you for my old friends who convinced me trying this gem!
Always people around this corner.
Parking could be a challenge.

Review from Lily B.
Went to the temple this morning and then had lunch at Ray's... needed a dessert to top off our lunch so I came. I had been thinking about Waiola Shave Ice for a looooooooooooong time. I always wanted to try it. So, since we were already in Kalihi, I thought we could drive down 15 more minutes and try it out.
I had the BF drive while I got the directions and we were there in no time. We luckily found parking on the curb next to the store. There were a few people lounging around eating shave ice. There was someone ahead of us ordering so we took our time to look at the menu.
The guy (short, Asian, glasses, young? maybe 20's) behind the little hole in the wall asked us if we were ready. I explained that we were still looking. More people came, and I kindly told them to order as we weren't ready. Again, he asked us if we were ready. I told him again I was still looking This time, he chuckled and said "you're still looking". Not in a friendly chuckle, but in a "what are you looking at it?... kinda sarcastic chuckle". Yes, I said, for the second time within a 2 minute period, I'm still looking. ONE: I'm indecisive; TWO: I've never been to your establishment before; THREE: I'm listening to what other people are ordering,; and FOUR: oh, did I mention, I'm STILL LOOKING AT THE DAMN MENU!!!
I finally (probably what he was thinking) was ready to order. [after a LONG 4 minutes]. The woman ahead of me ordered 7 shave ice. The older gentleman next to this young man (who was seriously lacking any ounce of proper customer service skills) was cranking out the shave ice one after the other. This woman hadn't even gotten all 7 of her order and the man practically yelled "NEXT" so that I could order. She abruptly moved to the side and I placed my order which I had to repeat twice. Gggrrrrr. I could go on and on about this guy and how he needs some interpersonal skills as well as a course on the use of facial muscles to smile... but it would be a waste of time. I noticed he was the same to each customer ahead of me and each customer after me. SMH just thinking about it. I read Nelson Q's review and I agree but will add a few things. SERVICE, yes, Waiola has SERVICE. EVERYWHERE DOES. Waiola DOES NOT have GOOD service, and here's even a stretch, Waiola does not have MEDIOCRE service. They have HORRIBLE customer service! Rushed rushed rushed with no appreciation for business. (this is ONLY for the young Asian gentleman with glasses that helped me!)
The BF and I got the same thing. Rainbow (strawberry, vanilla, and banana) shave ice with ice cream, mochi balls, and condensed milk in a bowl. Total for both: $9. Kinda steep to me. Got our shave ice and sat down. Put my spoon in... moved some shave ice away... and saw that the center of the shave ice didn't even have syrup all the way through! CARDINAL SIN!!! The ice is VERY FINE... it doesn't take much syrup to saturate through the ice because it's SO FINE!!! Ggggrrrrrrr. Getting more irritated. The shave ice was nothing spectacular. The mochi balls were probably the best thing about it.
MINUS ONE STAR for rushed and unfriendly service.
MINUS ONE STAR for over priced shave ice.
MINUS ONE STAR for not saturating the ice with enough syrup!
At least I can say I tried. I'm glad other Yelpers have had positive 4-5 star experiences here. I'll be staying away from town and will make the trip to the North Shore to Matsumoto's where I normally get my shave ice... if it ain't broke, don't fix it! -
Review from Adam L.
One of the best shave ice since i've been to Hawaii. The shave ice is PERFECTLY ground. It is very fine and has a great texture. Other places usually have larger shave ice chunks. This was really perfect. Their syrups were added in good amounts, so really this is a MUST stop. I have found this and one other phenomenal shave ice places here in Honolulu.

How I miss you, even during the cold, San Francisco winter. It's been months since my boyfriend and I came back from Oahu, but I still can't kick the craving. I love how finely the ice is shaved. No crunch, which I enjoyed, and so many flavors and toppings. We tried out Matsumoto after and there was no comparison. The first taste and my boyfriend and I looked at each other like, "Uh-uh."
If you want some damn good shaved ice, don't fall for the hype. Go to the hidden gem: Waiola. -
Review from Cintamani A.

I don't come here for the service, the cleanliness or anything of that nonsense because all you need is the shave ice! So smooth in your mouth, always. Never had to worry about a sudden shard of chunky ice assaulting the roof of my mouth like far too many of the popular stands. Good solid flavors with a pretty extensive choices, great toppings and the classic vanilla ice cream buried under all the lush cold syrupy goodness. Never thought shave ice could sort of verge on the orgasmic and I don't care if that makes me sound horribly weird because I'm in bliss.

One star for your soft ice...
One star for your flavors and combinations...
Why you don't get 5 stars?
SHAPE: Fugliest shave ice ever...almost phalic-looking...wth????
STICKS: Take those out of your okoles(BOTH locations) so I can knock you off your high horses....your shave ice ain't all that...
SERVICE: Something Waiola definitely lacks...I don't care how good your product is(or you think it is) without service, your total experience is totally shot
Oh, the trash cans sure looked like they could use your over-rated shave ice, so we let them have it....ALOHA!!!!

Azuki bowl (comes with Azuki beans and condensed milk)!!
I really like not having syrup in it and just let the sweetness of the condensed milk flavor it. It's the best, yummm! They've also got my favorite mochi of all the ones we tried in Hawaii on vacation.
The texture of the shaved ice is on the mushier side, super fine, i.e. it isn't like super small sheets of ice, so when it melts, it is a bit more like a smoothie. -
Review from Lina O.
i dont know what it is about waiola's but this is the best shave ice EVAR! the ice is soooo soft. even though it comes in a small cup, its not about the size :)
waiolas is located down a small residential street (isnt everything in hawaii located down a small residential street? lol) on waiola street of course! theres a small parking lot next to waiolas, which probably fits less than 10 cars. waiolas is a tiny local market that has drinks and snacks and ice. you order your shave ice through a small window to the side of the market next to their colorful menu. if you're lucky you can grab a seat on a bench along the wall or next to the fence by the parking lot. waiolas is a definite must go to place in oahu. must go to, more than once! :)Listed in: You don't have to ask me twice

Waiola Shave Ice is definitely the best shave ice place I've been to in Oahu. I love the Azuki bean with mochi shave ice combo.
It is absolutely delicious and the texture of the "ice" is like snow--probably even softer than that.
I prefer the shave ice here way over Morimoto's.
I've been here through the rain and the sunshine. And, I've been depressed before when I found out that I had been late and the store already closed. Not many places have that effect on me! -

Azuki bowl w/ lychee and haupia FTW. Hands down this is the best shave ice place on the island!! Not only do they have A LOT of flavors, parking, and long hours, but the ice is super fine and they are located in town!! Don't waste your time driving to the north shore to get shave ice -- get it where the locals go! WAIOLA !!!!

Fremont, CA
Waiola is located in a residential part of town and they have a parking lot next door, but it gets busy so you might have to park on the street. The shave ice is as soft as Utah snow, unlike the "ice" you get at Aoki's and Matsumoto's on the north shore. The variety of syrup choices are good and flavorful. After a long day at the beach, nothing hits the spot better than a shave ice from Waiola. Add vanilla ice cream and/or azuki beans if you prefer.

Review from Patra B.
This was the best shaved ice I had in Oahu. Granted, I only went to two places, but this was my favorite.
You can get a large shaved ice for about $3, and there's no wait! We added ice cream, mochi, condensed milk and azuki beans. The ice here is very finely shaved with a very smooth consistency, so it doesn't feel like your chewing on ice bits. The mochi helps make this place better than all the rest. Those chewy little morsels are a nice little treat at the bottom of your Styrofoam cup.
They have a parking lot, and there are a few benches outside where you can enjoy your sweet treat. This is definitely on my list to visit again next time I'm in Oahu.Listed in: Hawaii Adventures

The best shave ice I have ever eaten! Oh my this was so so so so good. I came here the other day and it was closed. You should've seen the sadness on my face. It wasn't crowded or anything here. It's also located near peoples homes. They have a grocery store inside as well that sells drinks, candy, and other goods. This place is a MUST try.
I ordered the small cup. For the toppings I got it with condensed milk and li hing mui powder. The flavor I chose was the rainbow (Strawberry, vanilla, and banana) The ice here is so soft. It's like eating flavored clouds. It melts right away at the touch of your tongue. The ling hing power is the best thing ever. Condensed milk helps bring down the syrup sweetness. It blends together perfectly. This place is the winner. I love Waiola.
Recommendation: Rainbow shave ice with ling hing mui powder and condensed milk. -

The BEST shave ice on island. Hands DOWN like Dashboard Confessional. Speaking of music, oh man, does this cold treat make you want to sing when you take your 1st bite. *tra-la-la-laaaa!!*cough*brain freeze* -_o doh!
The syrup is perfect. Not too sweet but just enough flavor to please your palette. The ice is smooth and not crunchy. The toppings I've yet to try BUT I heard that the mochi balls and azuki beans are a must!
The 1st time I came here was with my friend Renee after a long day of passing out flyers for our job. She was all like "WHAAA?? You NEVER had Waiola shave ice?!" and dragged my clueless bootay over to the window and treated me to a strawberry and lilikoi (if memory serves me right) flavored icey cone of bliss. Awww the memories =)
I think my next visit is long overdue. Anyone down for shave ice? :D? -
Review from Earl G.
The only place I've tasted softer and finer ice was in Lake Tahoe where I'd lick freshly fallen snow. That's how good the ice here is, like man made snow flakes.
Tons of different flavors! I felt like a little kid on what to order. While Obama's rainbow sounded good (Cherry, lime, guava) went with the Hawaiian classic, POG ,(Passionfruit, orange, guava) with condensed milk. Mrs G had the guava with mochis. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
The shave ice experience set us back $7 and was perfect for a cooling down snack/dessert.
-- notes --
* Since WSI is in the middle of a residential neighborhood with it's own parking lot, parking is easy for this Oahu food institution. They've been open since 1940 and it looks like they still use the original ice shaver. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
* Make sure you add condensed milk (it gives the ice this awesome and unique sweetness and texture)
* The mochi is real mochi! Not like the mochi you get at froyo shops. (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
Didn't try Matsumoto's but did try Aoki's and this was easily the best.
A highlight of the vacay. A definite MUST VISIT if you're in Oahu.Listed in: Adventures in Oahu

Great south shore alternative to Matsumoto's shave ice. This is a low key neighborhood shop located in Moilili off the beaten path. In some respects it is better than Matsu's with more options, better spoons, more seating and less roadside riff-raff and crowds. You also don't need to drive out to the north shore or Kailua (Island Snow = not that good).
The Waiola ice is shaved fine and silky and the syrup is just right. Azuki beans and mochi are both good. Highly recommended. -

Heard lots of great things about this place, so I couldn't wait to try it out. It was a short walk from our hotel, and a nice change of scenery from busy Waikiki. We went on a weekday afternoon and there was no line. I ordered a large cup with coconut, pineapple, and banana syrup with condensed milk and mochi balls. The size was a lot smaller than I expected, and the syrup flavors were indistinguishable. Maybe the condensed milk overpowered the other flavors. The best part was the ice itself, which was a perfect soft texture. Other than that, it was just ok. Maybe I overhyped it in my head...I hate it when that happens.

Review from Alan B.
Dang Waiola can you please move to a bigger place that has a decent parking lot? For real, talk about wishing you had a smart car to fit in some of the spots your left with. Anywho after I found my parking spot eight blocks away, I finally got to try out the renowned shave ice. Again, Damn Waiola, can you please work on your customer service? The chic who took my order must've been the sister of the lady who "helped" me at Rainbow Drive-Inn. Another rude unapologetic person who didn't give a damn. But after I got my shave ice everything was beautiful again. The ice was a lot softer and smoother than any other shave ice place I've ever tried making it almost like cold cotton candy. IMO it's the perfect consistency for shave ice and just hope that they open another shop with better parking and with people who smile.

There's only one shave ice store, which proves to be the most dominant compare to any other shave ice store there is on this island and it's none other than Waiola Shave Ice. Although Matsumoto's and Aoki's have delicious shave ice, nothing can compare to what you can expect at this shave ice place.
Only a few times have I been here to this shave ice place and I must say they know how to make the perfect shave ice that'll make you wanna have on a hot muggy day. I've tried the chocolate sundae shave ice twice and it tastes awesome. It's good how they add Hershey's chocolate syrup to the shave ice to add more chocolatey taste to it because being a chocolate fanatic that I am, a chocolate sundae shave ice wouldn't be what it is without having Hershey's chocolate syrup added to it.
As for the other shave ices, they're all worth eating as well especially the azuki beans shave ice. I've tried it before once and it tastes really good. I mean come on, how does not having azuki beans complete a shave ice especially an azuki beans shave ice?! It doesn't get any better than that folks.and it simply never will as long as this shave ice place remains in business. Besides the chocolate sundae shave ice and azuki beans shave ice, there're other shave ice flavors that's offered and if you haven't tried other shave ice flavors, then you're definitely gonna miss out on the fun.
Not only is this a shave ice place, it's also a convenience store but a very small one. I've seen how busy this place on a daily basis but the most busiest time is during the weekends where there're so many people standing in line wanting to eat shave ice ranging from kids to adults. Occasionally, there're tourists that come here to eat shave ice as well amongst the locals and you can tell they absolutely love eating the shave ices.
It's no wonder why this shave ice is so popular; it's located in a quiet neighborhood where only the people that know about this shave ice place come here regularly and not many tourists don't know where exactly it's located. The best thing about here for me is I live right by it! If I wanted to, I could walk over to the place and get myself a shave ice without having to worry about driving and trying to find a place to park either in the parking lot or on the street.
Basically, Waiola Shave Ice has already proven that Matsumoto's Shave is nowhere near their league and that's just how it is when it comes to determining which shave ice place on this island makes the best shave ice. -

Not in the greatest area, but the hole-in-the-wall spots tend to be the best spots! Their shave ice is the best I've had - the ice is shaved so fine it just melts in your mouth! Get the condensed milk flavoring with condensed milk topping & azuki beans, or try something fruitier if that suits your taste buds! The price is unbeatable too, will be back here!

I for one, made the mistake that shaved ice was just a fancy word for snow cones..until I came to Waiola's. This place changed my point of view on shaved ice and made me a fan. Their shaved ice is super fine and almost has the consistency of ice cream.
Not the most easy menu to navigate through (even after a long line, I still didn't know how to order and the people behind the counter didn't seem like they wanted to help me figure out what I want), but luckily I stumbled across a creation that actually turned out decent. I got an ice cream bowl with azuki beans with lilikoi and vanilla syrup. It as definitely more than one person can handle (hello brain freeze!) but it was definitely a refreshing snack after sitting out on the hot beach all day. Waiola's will be on my list for my next Oahu trip! -

Straight up. No frills and right in the middle of a neighborhood flanked by houses and apartments.
The ice here is shaved to a powdery-like fineness that would put fairy dust to shame. This is why I prefer 8 times out of 10, Waiola over Matsumoto's. I only got to try this place once while vacationing in Hawaii but something as simple as green tea, condensed milk and azuki beans topped on your fluffy ball of snowflakes is all you need to be convinced this spot is legit.
It's a treat that should be savored and enjoyed whilst lounging in the shade and watching bikini-clad girls. Hawaii makes my heart flutter. -

This tiny plantation days store is the absolutely BOMB in shave ice. Tourist go to Matsumotos, but locals go here! The shave ice is so smooth and the tropical flavors are so ono-licious! Trust me, I've had shave ice on every island and the moon and bar-none this is the supreme in shave ice! My fav combo is haupia with vanilla ice cream/azuki beans and cream poured on top! Mmm.. I'm salivating! Don't expect anything fancy here... benches to eat on... and crack seed in the store, but if you want the best shave ice... you go here!
The only draw back is that's it's hard to find and located in a very old Honolulu neighborhood, but it's worth it!Listed in: Best Shave Ice!

Now that I have had both Waiola and Matsumoto's Shave Ice I can declare that this place is my favorite. It's a little more expensive than Matsumoto's but it's closer and overall tastier.
The Shave ice here is much finer and as other reviewers have said it literally melts in your mouth instantly. It's crazy good. I liked the condensed milk drizzled on top as well as the ice cream on the bottom. I'm glad they use real ice cream instead of the soft serve ice cream at other places. It makes the overall experience much better IMO. My boyfriend got the beans and I thought it was a nice touch. I enjoyed it but I don't think I would order it all for myself. The ice cream is just too good.
Parking was a pain for me but that might have been a fluke. After circling for about 5 minutes I finally found a spot. When we finally walked up to the shop the parking lot emptied out. Bummer.Listed in: Oahu Trip!

Waiola has some of the best shave ice on the island. The ice is really fine and almost melts in your mouth. The mango, lillikoi, and lychee flavors are delicious. It is usually crowded but don't be intimated by the line, it goes by pretty quickly. The only problem when they are really busy is that they gip out on the syrup. I once had them pour more syrup because the second spoon I took was plain ice. Its not super expensive but not super cheap, around $2.25 for a small cup with two flavors..
