I love this bank!  I opened my account here after closing my Bank of America account because that evil corporate beast was charging me all of these hidden fees and I'd had enough.  It's a long story, but one day B of A charged me 4 overdraft fees!  They wouldn't wave any of them.  I guess sometimes it takes 10 days for my purchases to clear.  Whatever.

Wainwright is great.  They make an effort to hire women and minorities and give back to the community.  You can tell the employees are happy from the excellent service.  Once I overdrew myself and the bank manager called to let me know!

There are obvious downsides to a small, local bank but my experience at Wainwright has been stellar.

this bank rocks. plus they give so much back to the community. and on top of all that, they operate with a moral compass. for example, they don't invest in evil places with evil regimes.

Its sad to say but despite the tag of "socially responsible" and "green"  Wainwright isn't  all that.  The customer service I got in both Back Bay and the main branch were lack luster at best.  The manager in the Downtown Crossing Branch ignored me one day to talk to his co-worker about fantasty footbal.  It took me well over a month to get my account setup right and I had to move to another back becuase i was so ticked about the "challenges".

DO NOT try to apply online for an account.  I did this when I found this bank before moving to Boston, it took me over a month to get my bank cards and even longer for checks.

To top it off, you cant supress statments and get them by email and they send me cancelled checks.  How does this make them a green, socially responsible bank.  Its a shame.  Hopefully someday they'll get it right and I'll come back from sovereign which is OK but still not the credit union I miss so much.

This is the best bank around. They are friendly, local, the online banking is great  (recently upgraded), and if you use automatic deposit, there are no fees. Excellent.

If you're using Bank of America or some other megabank, do yourself a favor and make the switch.

They are also a public company, so I bought some stock: it has performed very well over the last 4-5 years so I am a happy customer in more ways than one!

I have been a customer of Wainwright Bank for years - I don't know why it took me so long to leave the banks that were jerking me around and never cared about my needs.

I was cared for really well with Wainwright, from the very beginning. I opened my account at Central, but did most of my banking in the past few years (due to where I was living) and they always remembered me, and helped me out with whatever I needed.

I refuse to open another account elsewhere. I get free checking, free ATM stuff with the SUM machines (which are everywhere) and the personal service is astounding in a day and age where it is usually so infrequent. They have gone out of their way to save me from overdraft fees, ecc.

Bank at Wainwright - do yourself a favor.

I am proud to say I left Bank of America to do my banking at Wainwright Bank.  This is a great bank with great personal service... you can get a live body on the phone if you need to and the branches have hours that people with jobs can actually use.  Their on line banking is less sophisticated and pretty but works just the same and pays all my bills on time.  I love their community minded, service oriented, one love approach to doing business.  Yay Wainwright Bank, you rock!

I realized this was no ordinary bank when I went to a ribbon-cutting ceremony for an affordable housing development that Wainwright financed in Somerville. The President of Wainwright spoke at the ceremony about how misguided the War in Iraq was, and suggested the impact that all the money spent their could have in reducing or eliminating homelessness in the United States.

The service at Wainwright is great, not only with the number of branch locations around Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville, but also with the plethora of SUM ATM locations all over the region. The employees are always helpful and pleasant, plus most locations give out free coffee and Dunkin' Munchkins. Who could ask for anything more?

It might be OK for individual accounts, but for a business account it has been a huge waste of time

-  opening an account took almost an hour, and they were not very familiar with the paperwork be familiar with the paperwork, also there was an unbelievable amount of typing stuff into the computer.  This should have been a clue.
-  it took over a month and a half to get a PIN for my ATM card
- ATM card equipment was broken at the Kendall Sq branch when I tried to resolve it in person.  Also there were no other customers, but they seemed annoyed that I was there.
- No Swift number, so you get double-charged fees for international money orders, one for wainwright, one for the bank they have to go through.
-
-online banking interface only stores the current and previous statement --  I can't believe I'll have to type this stuff into quickbooks from paper statements!
-online bill pay is through a third party with a bad interface

I opened a business checking acct. at citizens and have had none of these problems.

Love Wainwright Bank!  I joined up with them when the venerable Cambridgeport Bank closed its doors.  They have a number of well-placed locations, and their ATM card is on the SUM system, which allows you to withdraw money from other small banks on the system.  The fees are neglible (I'm not sure if I even have any fees), and their CD rates are competitive.  They also are great supporters of community groups.  If you'd like to be part of a bank that does more with your money than fatten their executives' purses, check out Wainwright.  I have four different accounts iwth them, no kidding. : )
