i'm way too old for the water slide, but it was fun! so were the drinks of the day for only 5 bucks.
pretty decent hotel for the price, so you obviously aren't going to get the beautiful flower arrangements in the lobby like at other hotels. the loco moco at bfast was pretty awesome. too bad i couldn't finish it.
really enjoyed the location being away from kona. seemed secluded.
We spent 5 nights at the Marriott Waikoloa, courtesy of all the Marriott points we rack up traveling for work. The building is nothing to look at, but our room was clean and spacious, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The concierge did their best to help, but didn't seem to have any more information than our guide books. The resort isn't too big or overwhelming - you can walk around the whole property easily and is didn't seem that crowded.
They have several pools, hot tubs and a water slide - seems to be mostly "grown up kids" using the slide :-) There are plenty of chairs for catching some sun, but precious little shade - maybe 3 or 4 umbrellas - unless you're willing to give in to extortion and pay the Marriott $50 for day use of a mini-cabana. If you're lucky and creative, you might be able to find a spot to drag some chairs in to the shade - the staff doesn't seem to mind. The beach is great as well - just steps from the pool, really, and not very crowded, though it didn't seem like snorkeling was particularly good there.
The restaurant and luau both seemed overpriced for the most part. The luau with tax was over $80/person, and from what we saw of it (we did the "free" version by sitting at the pool where we could see it), it was campy. Still, open bar... not bad. The drinks at the bar were around $10-$15, kind of like being in NY or SF, but at least they were strong and came with little umbrellas. The breakfast buffet was $21 (it said $28, but I guess it was on sale?) - a decent spread that includes rice, fish, meats and omelets plus the usual fare.
It's in a good location in that it's sunny all the time, but there isn't much nearby other than the resort village itself. Most anything else is at least a 15-20 minute drive. Kailua-Kona is 30 minutes, as is Waimea.
All in all, it was relaxing and non-stressful - especially if you're using points and don't have much of a bill at check out!
This hotel has an awesome location. Its close to the Kona airport, has lots of shops and food just outside the property, and the hotel looks newly updated and impressive.
The rooms are updated too, although the toilet / shower room is kind of closterphobic. Otherwise it was a great stay. We got the $20/day resort fee to help pay for the hotel self parking, plus use the snorkle gear, and some other things.
Right outside the pool area is the famous "A" bay. Its a beach that is in the guidebooks as a nice place to go for the beach and some snorkling.
Overall this was a solid hotel and centrally located. I would stay here again.
Just checked in yesterday September 22nd. Got one week via Priceline for $850 for seven nights. Had to pay a $20 resort fee per day but that covers internet, parking, phones etc....a good deal.
Staff has been very kind. Rooms are nice. We upgraded to a larger room for $25 a night.
Housekeeping is top notch. Management is responsive to questions.
Grounds are lovely, pools are nice, not sure what more you would want.
Very nice.
This place was great- the prices were great for what we got-- not the nicest Marriott, but up there and the decor, service, etc is everything you want out of your tropical vacation. The pool is great and the beach access was worth it. AND they make some of the best pina coladas I've ever had. We also checked out the luau. It was fun-- not the nicest or biggest (don't' think they roast the pork on site) but was good entertainment and an open bar which you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.
BEAUTIFUL resort! I got a great deal for this place so I can't really comment on what it usually costs to stay here...
Immediately when you walk through the lobby, you see an amazing view of the resort and the beach. You are greeted by extremely friendly people! The rooms are clean and tastefully decorated, service is on-point, they have beautiful pools, an amazing view, and the beach is walking distance! If you stay there, you can pay a $20/day resort fee and it gives you free internet access in your room (not wireless tho), and half-day snorkel rental for free. This is about 20-30 minutes away from Kona where a lot of the tourist attractions are, but it's only about 5 minutes away from Hapuna Beach which was my favorite beach! Nearby, there's a shopping mall and the Queen's marketplace. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!
I got a great deal at this hotel...and I mean great so even having a room that has a kiddy corner view of the ocean was totally fine. The rooms are nicely decorated and very modern. For a $20 resort fee, you get two free mai tais, free parking, free internet (of which I'm using to write this review) and 1/2 off snorkeling. The rooms are tastefully decorated and all have lanais. I like the bathroom area and it has a credenza with a refrigerator and coffee machine nook. The beds are super comfy and although you sink in, it's really comfy. The beds appear a bit short though...
The main part of the hotel is nice and they did a good job remodeling. The pools area is really cool and I enjoyed going down the water slide. It wasn't crowded either and everyone here is real friendly.
This hotel is also located across the street from Louis Vuitton, Macy's and Tiffanys...although I had no time budgeted in to shop (that will be on Oahu). There is also the Queens Market Place with other shops and an ABC store.

This was a great hotel! From the moment you drive in, you know you're in paradise! The grounds are beautiful and everyone is so friendly. Everywhere you walk, you're always greeted with an "Aloha!" All rooms include a small sitting area with a couch/love seat and a lanai. You do have to be careful when picking your room though because a partial ocean view can mean a view of the ocean if you lean really far on the railing and look to the left! The rest of your view can be nothing but black rock. But other than that, the room is great. The bed is extremely comfortable and the bathroom and sink area are separated.
The hotel does charge a $20/day resort fee but I think its actually worth it. The fee includes daily self parking, internet access in your room, 2 mai tais at check in, 1/2 off snorkeling gear at the beach, and some other things that I can't remember at the moment.
The property is also within walking distance of the Kings Shops and Queens Marketplace which has both high end and budget shops. There is an ABC grocery shop in Queens that is a good place to buy cheap breakfasts to store in your room.
If ever I'm back on the Big Island, I'd definitely come back here!
As a travel consultant at http://cre8adventures.com, we've found this hotel is the Big Island's most improved property, having recently surfaced from one of the best makeovers in the state. Great pools, a terrific golf course, a superlative sandy beach, and colorful, sophisticated accommodations.
We thoroughly enjoyed the properties lush landscaping and colorful large-scale art, along with its bold, modern architecture. The superb new modern design blends elegant regionally-inspired accents with creative lighting fixtures, chic angular contemporary furnishings and warm sea hues.
Possibly our favorite feature was the lovely beach and the historic royal fish ponds. A well-marked walking path wends through the property's numerous historical features that include the ruins of a small village as well as the engineered ponds once used for aquaculture. The broad sweep of beach is better than the one fronting Kona Village and Four Seasons Hualalai! Everywhere you look water is in view, and the new pool complex adds a fun, fashionable and family-friendly area that combines four pools with a trio of 12-person whirlpools.
The focus is on the large, landscaped, free-form pool with a 90-ft slide and plenty of chaise longues. We even splurged on the first day and rented a cabana, which was well worth the $50, as this came with juice, bottled water, and snacks for the day!
Below the second-floor reception area is the main restaurant that serves all meals, a breezy, tropical spot that proves popular. Prices are expensive, but relatively low when compared to other full-service island resorts. The only on-site alternative is the poolside snack bar, but a number of dining options are available at the new Queen's Shops, five minutes away in Waikaloa (ironically the greek restaurant was so fantastic we visited it three times!)
Guests sip drinks beside the pool and in the main bar, which provide nightly entertainment. Extravagant, twice-weekly luaus entertain guests, while slack-key guitarists and local talent provide diversion. Recreational offerings include tennis courts, snorkeling and pedal-boating in the calm lagoon. There are also glass-bottom boat rides, sailing, sailboarding, hiking, riding, petroglyph viewing, lawn bowling and a Parcourse. The gym is full of new state-of-the-art equipment. The hotel's Mandara Spa has reopened with a sleek Asian-Pacific aesthetic and a long roster of treatments. Tennis courts are unlighted, but the pools never close.
Some guests complain of the mandatory $20 per day resort fee, but its relative value is undeniable, offering self-parking, free Internet access, two cocktails, free local and long distance calls (mainland) and access to the gym.
All of the accommodations show stylish new decor, which is a sophisticated blend of contemporary and Pacific flavors. Regional art creates a lovely backdrop for the well-proportioned rooms, although for many arrivals the focus is the new Revive Beds set on custom-built platforms with white leather padded headboards. The beds are backed into shoji screens that filter light into the adjoining baths. Sensuous green and blue color schemes add elegance. Amenity rosters are packed with goodies, including cable-accessible Internet, phones with speakers, data ports and voice mail, clock radios with MP3 capabilities, well-disguised refrigerators, big-screen TVs with one free movie per stay, video games and laptop-size safes. The large baths have excellent cabinetry that expands storage capabilities, large mirrors and good lighting. Large vanity areas, massaging shower heads, hair dryers and toiletries are standard. The abundance of white keeps housekeepers on their toes, and they do a great job of keeping everything in order. Room service, turndown and complimentary newspapers are standard.
Family-friendly, yet romantic, this place provides a good mix of clientele in an exceptional setting. This is the best in its class on the Big Island.

I've never done too much "staying" at this Marroitt per se, but I have done a lot of swimming in its pools and 'cuzzis, whilst drinking fruity drinks from their near-bar pool.
Try not to go out during the heat of the day, not only because of the prohibitively high UV index, but because that is when the most irritating, football throwing, midwestern tourists are out. They usually leave the pool at around 4pm because their ordinarily pasty skin has turned purple from all their drunken gallivanting in the hot Hawaiian sun with no sun screen. So 4p-5p is the most peaceful time. PLUS you can see the sunset through the trees while you relax in your cabana with a book, or bubble away your vacation in the jacuzzi with a drink.
ALSO: the Midori 'Coladas at the near-pool bar are absolutely delish. Its like a melona bar smoothe that'll get you drunk!

So I went home today and took a lot at my once glorious swimming pool. I can't step in it anymore because for 2 weeks I was so used to the clean, amazing, pool at the Outrigger. Also I don't have a bar, the ocean, cabanas, and staff at my pool. I just have a lot of dead bugs, leaves, and chlorinated water.
Ok, so I didn't really stay here either but my boyf and I would sneak in every night when we were visiting his parents. Don't worry, we were completely inconspicuous. Not like those loud hicks who have to play football drunk here.
Oh, also ladies you'll be glad to know that I got a nice kick of self-esteem while here. Not only did I develop a killer tan that makes me look 5 pounds thinner while laying on the nice beach chairs, but the abundance of overweight, pasty, cellulite-y, women in too small bikinis made me realize that it could be worse.
oh, and do have the midori colada, you'll thank me later.

Kapio at the concierge is the man! He has all the good local restaurant recommendations. He won't send you to a touristy place.
4 stars for the staff service, beds, room view, decor, and pools.
Every contact with a staff member was pleasant. Room service was the only complaint (they forgot our oj and then didn't set up our table with salt and pepper!) Beds are SUPER comfortable. Decor is nice and modern. The hotel has like 3 or 4 pools and jacuzzis including a water slide and an infinity pool. Walk a few steps and you'll be on the beach for a perfect view of the sunset.
Oh yeah, be prepared to pay a $20/per night resort fee on top of your room rate. The plus to this is that you get 4 hrs of free snorkling gear daily, 2 mai tais daily, $10 credit towards an in room movie, 1 hr of tennis court use, and unlimited calls.

This is day 2 of a 7 night stay so things may change.
The resort has been very nice so far although there are a couple things that are less than stellar. On the first day, within 4 hrs of arriving at the hotel, my flip flops were stolen whilst at the pool. Seriously, who steals cheap ratty flip flops? If you have my flip flops, please return them. Thanks.
The morning buffet is good but expensive at $25 per. However, I was bummed by the lukewarm coffee and the curdled milk (yes, curdled milk) when I tried to have a cup-o-joe. To their credit, they did not charge me for the breakfast but that's still kinda nasty.
I was upgraded into an "Ocean View Room" based on status but I think it is also a fairly slow season as there are not too many people around. That said, the bed is FANTASTIC. I can only say WOW and resolve to try to replicate it when I get home.
I also attended the luau with Michele but it was too touristy for me with attempts to push the pictures (too expensive at $40!). They also decided to go ahead with the luau even though it started to rain. So it turned out to be somewhat of a soggy luau. Your mileage may vary.
If you do decide to visit, Lani at the concierge was extremely helpful and gave us some great suggestions. I'll give it 3 1/2 stars for now and update later.

A very nice tranquil resort near the northern coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. It has finished it's major renovation that provides a lot more new amenities that will surely knock your socks off.
The resort has a great pool with water slides and various hot tubs. Towels are available by the dozen and they'll even allow you to take them to the beach that's within walking distance. Near the pool is a courtyard that holds luau's or other outdoor activities. They also have a lovely flower garden in their courtyard that showcases a lot of exotic flowers, especially the lovely plumeria.
While i never envision spending that much time in a room when I'm in Hawaii, the rooms here are beautiful. They have a Polynesia/Asian decor to them with the super soft 300 count thread sheets and the new 'revive' beds. The bathrooms are spacious and amenities plentiful.
The location is perfect, as you're close to the Hilton resort next door (which is the best around in this area, thus the four stars here), there's a lovely set of shops across the street, and you're just a twenty minute drive from downtown Kona.
The Marriott staff is very pleasant and attentive and they will go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay. It's definitely one of the finer resorts on the Big Island.
Nice place that has just been remodeled, the grounds are very, very nice.....they were finishing the construction of the meeting areas while we were there....this was an Outrigger Hotel before.....
We had an "Ocean Front Room" that was incredibly small, we couldn't even get around between the desk and the king bed....with some luggage in the room it was Very Very small and cramped....
I keep it at 4 stars though for a couple of things....the property location is fantastic, the beach in front of the hotel is one of the best in all of Hawaii (the state and the Island)....Also the staff was especially good....we had a red eye flight back so we hung out at the hotel (after checking out) and the shopping center across the street.....they let us use a "hospitality" room to freshen up in before we went to the airport that night.....The people were great.
Hubby and I just spent a week at the Marriott Wailkoloa. My hubby travels frequently and has accumulated lots of Marriott points which allowed us a week at this Marriott using his points. The hotel was recently renovated and has a clean, modern, open air feel. Compared to it's neighbor, the Hilton Waikoloa, the Marriott is tiny, even tinier than tiny. But I appreciated the fact this was not a mega hotel complex. It was more quaint and as the other reviews mentioned, the location is wonderful. Positioned directly in front of "A" bay (I'm not going to bother to consult my travel book for the 76 letter spelling of the full name of the bay) you have access to the ancient fish ponds that trickle out into the ocean and are surrounded by the beautiful black lava rock. We saw several sea turtles in the ocean just in front of the hotel as well as down the beach a little. The beach is not overcrowded with people and is an excellent place to watch the sunset on one of the lounge chairs right in front of the water.
The rooms are nice with modern chic decor and just a touch of Hawaiian. Each room has a mini fridge (so I HIGHLY recommend stopping at Costco located a few miles south of the airport and stocking up on supplies such as water and snacks--the have the best prices you will find). Giving credit where credit is due, I got the Costco recommendation from my travel book--Hawaii The Big Island Revealed by Andrew Doughty. The book is excellent and it is a MUST have if you are going to the big island.
The staff, especially the concierge and valet, were great. Very friendly and always accommodating.
They get minus a star for having only one restaurant....food was ok but not worth the hotel prices. The seating area is entirely outdoors and is flooded by scavenging birds and even the cats come out at night to beg for food. Unfortunately the staff doesn't do much to keep these creatures from encroaching on your dining space. Also, the pool area could have used more umbrellas and more staff servicing the area for food/drinks.
The hotel is also located in walking distance directly across the street from the King Shops where a variety of dining and shopping can be found.
Overall the Marriott Waikoloa gets a solid 4 stars.
