8 reviews for Wah Kue Cafe
Sometimes I have a craving for old school chinese food, the kind you would get before they things like lettuce wraps. They still make the chow mein with bean sprouts instead of noodles. The quality of the food is very good and they pour one of the stiffest drinks at any restaurant.
The place has been here forever and hope it always is.
How can you not like the older lady and gentlemen that work the place? Anyone thinking they are creepy just cannot appreciate someplace as good as this.
Why the heck are there little bits of pork in EVERYTHING?!?
The food was not good & it averaged out around $15.00 a plate. Creepy old guy was circling us the whole time... My B/F's Family had been going there for like 20 years or something, so he finally took me... The eggflour soup was the OK part, but it was $11.00 just for the soup & there were still those damn little chunks of weird lumpy pork...
At least I didnt get sick from it.
Let me start with saying that I am not very fond of Chinese food. For the same reason I don't like spaghetti. I have been forced to eat it too often growing up. With that, even I must say this place is pretty darn good. It's a bit on the expensive side, but I figure food is one of those places where it's OK to splurge once in a while. The last time I was there, the food was great. Especially the almond fried chicken. Oh yummy!
Also, the little old lady who is there sometimes is the best. My mom mentioned once that I was the only person she knew who ate and LIKED fortune cookies. The lady told me to wait and brought me an entire small paper bag full of fortune cookies. Any place that gives me cookies can't be that bad!
Well those are some pretty bad reviews! But as the 3rd generation of my family (and my kids being the 4th) of eating here..I say its some of the best around. I moved pretty far away from Burien and have tried MANY chinese restaurants searching for the same yummy food I get at Wah Kues. With NO luck! I mean...sweet and sour chicken isn't supposed to look like it has cherry pie filling on it, right?? It seems Wah Kues is the only place who knows this! We always get BBQ pork, pork fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. They always bring my kids noodle soup at no charge and tons of cookies and candy after. And there are no creepy guys there. They have all worked there since it opened and they are all nice. I love the parents who run the front. Always nice to us and remember us even though now we only make it in once or twice a year. I would recommend to anyone. Some dishes are better than others. Oh well. I love it. :) But yes, I do agree that it is overpriced.
ouch - that previous review hurts me.
Well - I'll admit, I'm a whitey who must not know my chinese food. Considering, however, that I refuse to order slimey concoctions like chow mein and what not - I'm not that hurt ;).
I have three main staple dishes - fried rice, mongolian beef, and almond fried chicken.
Wah Kue's has nailed them as far as I'm concerned. True - they're expensive, more so than a few places I've been. But I'm ok with that because I don't eat there often.
The place has the same red/black motif as is expected of most chinese restaurants and the service is decent. They're also great with kids - my son gets a free sucker every time (I think it's just because he's so darn cute
We love this old school Chinese American food! Huge egg rolls wrapped in actual egg, and the sweet and sour is the best I have ever had, not gooey sticky, just sweet and yummy! Oh and the wonton soup is quite flavorful and nice, served family style. The sign outside is my favorite, "serving take out since 1948". I am hoping they get that order out soon, because it will probably be cold when it gets there.
This place has been open for 50 years now. Out of those 50 my family has been eating at Wah Kue's for 47. This place has been a tradition in our family for some time now.
We have 4 dishes that we stick with-
Almond Fried Chicken
Sweet and Sour Chicken
Chicken chow mein
Chicken fried rice
I've tried other dishes but they just don't seem as good.
The little old lady up front somehow remembers me even though I only go maybe once or twice a year. Pretty amazing.
Food is served hot and fast. Pricey but for me it's worth it.
Wow, my girlfriend and I are totally dissatisfied with our experience there. For a chinese restaurant in Burien, this place is WAY overpriced. $10-13 dollars for basic chinese dishes like fried rice and chow mein, are you kidding me? My pork chow mein had way more bean sprouts than noodles, I could hardly see any in that swimming sea of sprouts. I wanted a noodle dish mofos, not a bean sprout dish!!! I ordered BBQ pork chow mein and got some grey chunks of mystery pork in it as well, sheesh. This place is a disgrace to chinese food, I was actually offended. They have american dishes too but $8 for a basic egg and cheese sandwich on wonder bread? How could this place be so popular? I guess all the white people I saw there don't know their chinese food.... Well, we're never going back....
