The Wadsworth Atheneum is a great local resource for anyone in the greater Hartford area. As a current University of Hartford student, I have visited the museum on many times, especially for the showcased exhibits.
We went here on one of those free museum weekends that Bank of America does, and it was worth every cent!! Actually - this is a great, historic museum, and it was surprising to me to see this much internationally well known art in one place, here in CT.
When we were here there was an interesting quilt show from the 1800s, and a large collection of Stickley arts & crafts furniture on display, as well as tons of modern and classic art ..
one thing that is unfortunate about this museum is that it is in Hartford, and parking sucks in Hartford.
I want to check out one of their "after dark" art gatherings with DJs etc .. i think they are on the first thursdays of every month!

A gem indeed. You can see great pieces there you won't see in NY or Boston. Evidence that once upon a time Hartford was a glorious place, ( and no, that doesn't mean like chichi l West Hartford.)
People who rag on Hartford are so not aware of the Wadsworth. With a great collection, plenty of exhibits traveling through, and neat events and movies all the time, the Wadsworth is, as another poster put it, a gem. If you're a UConn student with an ID, free admission. Worth it.

Great place to visit if your in Hartford. The building itself is beautiful and it has a very diverse collection of art. I think theres something there for everybody to enjoy: photography, classical paintings, asian antiques, 18th century furniture, modern art, pop culture art, egyptian arifacts, there was even a real mummy! The place is very well kept and the people there are very friendly. If you look young enough you can say you are a college student and pay $5 =).

I only had an hour at the Wadsworth as we went through Hartford, but boy am I glad I took the time. It's a spectacular collection, with a little bit of everything, from all over. It's like a survey class in the history of art. Lots of large scale paintings, and interesting themed collections. The modern art exhibition that was there when I went was comparable with anything I've seen at MOMA or SF MOMA. Beautiful building, and really worth the time.

This museum has an excellent 20th century art collection. Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, Dali, Ernst, Chagall, etc. etc. etc. If you are an art lover this is a definite must-see while in Hartford. It was one of the highlights of my trip there.

A gem in the middle of Hartford. This is one of the best museums anywhere and is America's oldest public art museum. The first time I went to the Wad (she said with an affectionate smile) I was amazed with the beauty of the building itself. From the outside the Wad looks like a Medieval Castle. The inside is just as amazing with marbled floors and winding stair cases, ultra high ceilings, stained glass windows, and a section with a Tiffany stained glass ceiling. Alexander Calder is my favorite and the Wad has the best collection of his work including the enormous orange Stegosaurus located just outside the building. They also have my favorite Max Ernst Painting "Europe After the Rain." Salvidor Dali, Matisse, Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, Degas, Klimt, and more than there is room for in a review. You can see some of their collections on their website: http://www.wadsworthat.... Also take the time to eat in their cafe. Last time I ate there it was amazing and pricey. If you are in CT make the time to go to this Museum.
