Boston, MA
For a fairly newbie snowboarder I am happy with the trails at Wachusett Mountain Ski Area.
For starters the lodge area is big, open, plenty of seating. There are several food options inside, including a bar area (score). The trails are pretty well groomed. Some of the people in on the slopes need to learn some etiquette and have respect but you get that everywhere you go so I am not shocked.
One thing I will say is beware of your board being stolen. I noticed this past week 3 people complaining about their boards being stolen at the same time, at the service desk.
Overall for newbies it is a great place to learn and practice.
I am investing in an annual pass soon :) -

As a tiny mountain with mostly artificial snow, this is basically the Snooki of ski mountains. It's basically one run carved up into several trails with a beginner area towards the bottom. Even if skiing the same run three times in a row doesn't bore you, skiing it six times in a row probably will. And it won't even be lunch yet.
I guess the appeal of this place is that it's close. About 90 minutes from Boston. But 30 more minutes will take you to vastly better mountains in New Hampshire.
I guess the other appeal of this place is the beginner programs. But it's much closer and cheaper to head to Blue Hills. -
Review from Becky M.
Wawa is a very family- friendly place, which has its highs and lows (as someone without kids).
Pro:
- great variety of easy trails for true beginners to get their "mountain legs"
- night skiing option is not available everywhere.
- about an hour or so from PVD
- new faster quad lift.
- discount available if you are a AAA member, or if you join the text mailing list.
- the lodge bar has the local Wachusett beers on tap.
Con:
- a little expensive for what it is (but skiing ain't a cheap hobby)
- smallish
- gets crowded quickly on ideal days (hence why I like the nighttime option)
If you can play hooky and be there during the weekdays (non-holiday), you'll have great space to yourself. Especially good if you are practicing or trying to improve a skill. Also can't beat the easy drive from PVD. -

Wachusett's is a great family mountain. It has enough trails to keep an intermediate skier satisfied for a day trip. There is truly something for every level of skier. If you a first time skier, I sugguest starting off on " Ollie's Area" on the " Magic Carpet ". For intermediate skiers, Ralph's Run is a long, winding trail but just enough of a challenge. For experts, Wachusett's has nice moguls on 10th Mountain Trail.
As an added bonus, they have a waffle cabin! The waffle cabin has the best waffles on the earth!
Wachusett's offers a varietty of ski lesson too. Whether your a first timer or seasoned skier there is something for everyone! -

This place is pretty good for first timer.
This is the first mountain I have went. I went for two days. First day is snowboard. 4 beginner and one trainer. it is decent the trainer is super nice. Second day is ski, there were like a lot of people and only 2 trainers. The trainers was only busy with the smart ones and doesn't really care about the slow ones. Only learned few things from the ski trainers, it is just overpriced for a ski trainers but so worth it for snowboard trainer. I guess it depends when you r going and how many people are in the training section.
I went there in the morning the parking was pretty good.
The "learn to turn" package was pretty good even though it is unless for me because i didn't go up the lift. I only went to the lower ones.
"learn to turn" package includes equipment (the usual), lift ticket and a trainer. pretty decent.
IF IT IS YOUR FIRST TIME. BUY LEARN TO TURN PACKAGE so worth it because i went two days and I saw a girl was trying to learn how to snowboard herself on the first day and one the second day she still doesn't know how to do it. SO IT IS SO MUCH BETTER WITH A TRAINER. -
Review from Julie A.
I haven't been to Wachusett in many many years. I learned how to ski here when I was 11 and even learned how to snowboard when I was 14 at this mountain. There's a certain level of nostalgia for me to come here!
And guess what?! They were open on Christmas! Granted it was man-made snow, since we haven't had any yet this year, and there were only a handful of trails open, but I had a grand time.
They didn't charge me the full price for a lift ticket (due to the above fact) and service at the booth/rental hut was fast and friendly.
On a regular day, Wachusett isn't the most versatile or challenging mountain in New England, but it's close to most who live in RI/MA/CT and it's a great mountain for families, leisure skiing/boarding and learning.
Overall, Night skiing was a blast, with a trip to the Waffle Cabin for waffles and cocoa/cider mixed in between. -

Summers at Wachusett Mountain are a fun, secret western Mass.
Hike, Drink, and Family fun just not all on the same trip, that would be dangerous
Hike: No need to drive to New Hampshire just 40 mins outside boston is a great hike awsome views, and tons of secrete spots. Like a lookout cabin, and balance rock.
Drink: They have a ton of festivals including Musicfest and other beer festivles in August and September.
Family fun: If they play to much xbox you can take their lazy ass's up on the lift. They run it for festivals. Check out Kidsfest sure bet for the little guys.
If their is some useful check marks on this review I will do a winter update, enjoy. -

Wachusett is a pretty decent ski area. I mean, as far as big hills go. I tend to like it better in the summer for hiking and music festivals.

Three stars is generous.
Spent a day here skiing and lt was like rest of Massachusetts came too.
KIDS and PEOPLE EVERYWHERE!!
So many people and not enough staff, tables, lifts, changing area, bathrooms, lockers, you get the picture.
The lift lines you wait 30 minutes, unless you get in the singles line which we did so we could get more then 5 runs in.
The trails were mostly intermediate to easy. Only 2 black star trails which were decent.
They do maintain and groom here. Plenty of snow and snow-making.
Not a big mountain but okay for families that are learning or just getting started in skiing or boarding. -

Positive: Close by for MA residents, Cheap, Bar, Night skiing
Negative: Too crowded, OK slopes (nothing interesting)
If you don't want to spend too much money and get to hit the slopes, this is the resort for you. However, if you are looking to rent a place (getaway place) for a weekend for a nice ski experience, I suggest other resorts. -

*WARNING* This a review of their Black Diamond Restaurant.
Their food is excellent and being regularly mauled by Boston pricing, anytime I find entrees sanely priced, my brain does the MC hammer dance complete with square pants and gratuitous hip thrusting. They used to have a Chicken Paisan sandwich that was good enough to have gold plated and worn on a chain around my neck. The new favorite since they retired that champ is the Banh Mi sandwich. Interestingly Banh Mi is "sandwich" in Vietnamese so my current favorite is the "Sandwich" sandwich. This is NOT the $3 sandwhich you can buy at many a Vietnamese noodle shop, but a tribute to said sandwich.
Their sandwiches are really good. I've heard report that the steak is tragically not awesome. -

So, Wachusett Mountain is good. not great, not horrible. If you were an avid pot smoker, Wachusett is the stuff you'd find circulating the high school. It's easy to get (to), it's quick, relatively cheap, it's enough to take the edge off.
I've been going since the start of the season, and have not had any major issues. I did almost have a brief run-in with a chair lift but that was because of a newb.
I'd recommend getting there for first chair, or for night skiing. There are a lot of 'kids' so be prepared to be surrounded by teenie boppers.
Other than that, enjoy the hour drive, get some hours in on the slopes and ditch the teenie boppers at the bar, cause that's only 21+. -

Brookline, MA
Hmm, skiing is an expensive activity, and coupled with what seemed to be an overabundance of people for an early-Sunday run, I'm not sure how I feel about Wachusett.
The lower lift operates extremely slowly, to the point where we had to leave after waiting 20 minutes without moving.
However, the staff are friendly and effective in the equipment area if you are renting, so it is quick to rent and quick to return. You do have to take a shuttle from the parking area to the base of the mountain but this is a non-issue unless there is a question of accessibility for people who use mobility aids.
Excellent snow base & good (adults) area in the lodge if you need a bit of respite from the children.
Best plan is to arrange to spend as much of a day here as possible and pony up for the helmet because brain injuries are no fun! -

Nearly 10 years living in Boston, and I'd never bothered with Wachusett. I'd always written it off as being too small and too far south to be worth the visit. But on a lazy Sunday morning nearly the end of the season, it seemed like a pretty good option.
As I had assumed, the resort is tiny - only 4 lifts (one of which only services the bunny slopes), a couple dozen VERY short trails and 1,000 feet of vertical drop. The resort claims to have advanced trails, but they're really not. I didn't see a halfpipe or terrain park, or any backcountry trails. It's a tiny beginner and intermediate mountain.
That being said, we still managed to have a blast while we were there. I was ecstatic to find the resort nearly empty. I often found myself alone on the trails, and I never had to wait more than 60 seconds in line at the lift. Lift tickets were much cheaper than the bigger resorts. And at an hour away from Boston, it's so much more accessible. I figure we saved $20 each on our lift tickets, $35 in gas and about 4 hours of drive time.
And the staff at Wachusett was really cool too - everyone had a smile on their face and a kind word on their lips. Every time I got on the lift, the attendant had something nice to say. And hanging out with some of the instructors in the bar afterwards was a blast.
I don't think Wachusett will ever be a destination resort for me, and it's probably a nightmare when busy. But the next time I have an itch to do some riding without the driving, or if I have a new person to teach, Wachusett will definitely be on my radar. -

Went to the "mountain" for October Fest, an annual event at Wachusett.
They had a great selection of harvest and German beers, an interesting assortment of traditional food and an owl tent. Yes, an owl tent. There were like five different kinds, very cool. They had one that looked straight out of Labyrinth.
I'm sad to report that I did not partake in the sausage or the kraut. I plain couldn't find it even though there were signs everywhere. I did however try the apparently unrelated Wachusett Jack Pumpkin ale and that was my favorite beer of the day. Sam Adams tastes like vegetables to me, always has. I just can't love it.
The cider donuts on the way out were very good and even better after popping them in the oven the next day. There was a craft fair and a man with a trained monkey on his shoulder. I didn't check out the fair as I was distracted by said monkey.
Little too windy for me to ride the lift but that was available as well. -

My girlfriend and I got totally gnar gnar aggro and shredded the shit out of some sweet pow pow at Wa Wa this past Sunday. It was totally radiskins bo bo, dude! FO!!!
As a novice snowboarder, I found this mountain to be perfect. Yeah it's small, but when double black diamonds = certain death, the trails they have are totally sufficient. Not only that, but it's close, cheap and the french fries were delicious. And for all those hippies who don't have cars, cause it "pollutes the environment, man", you can pack up your bongos and take the commuter rail there! Yeah the lift lines are somewhat long, but the staff does a great job at moving people along. Only downside, lots of kids. So when you fall on your face for like the 100th time and some pimply faced teenager who has never even seen a real live vagina before, does this sick jump over your lying on the ground limp body, it hurts inside a little bit.
TRIPPENDICULAR! -

Although I'm a novice skier and I've only been to a handful of ski areas, I found Wachusett to be pretty average. My girlfriend and I came during a holiday weekend and had an enjoyable time. All the trails were well groomed. Being a novice, some of the trails were pretty challenging for me. The green trails were packed with kids and lessons though, to the point where it took us 10 minutes to get to the top of the trail with the lift, it took us about 2 minutes to get down it and there were countless beginners and kids we had to navigate around. Be warned that around lunch, the lodge gets packed to the brim with families and kiddies running around. We ate at the sit-down restaurant upstairs since there was no room in the general dining area. All the employees though are really friendly and helpful. My gf's lift pass fell off her gortex and the front desk staff gave her a replacement immediately.
I'd come back here again to tackle some of the tougher blues and blacks this place has to offer. Just stay away from that bunny slop if you can...place is like a war zone during peak times. -
Review from Nik B.
Even on one of the coldest weekends of the winter, I had a great time here.
OK so I'm from the midwest and we don't have great ski places. Wachusett was a great intro to East Coast winter sports. Personally, I'm a beginner/novice snowboarder and I was glad to see that Wachusett had a beginner package. For $85 I got a lower lift ticket, snowboard, boots, helmet and free lesson. I didn't actually ask for the lesson so I can't comment on that.
The slopes that I ran were great. Very spacious. The chairlift for the lower lift was pretty slow, but worth the trek. By the time you get to top, you are freezing.
Luckily, there is Waffle Cabin at the bottom with Belgian Liege waffles. These doughy waffles with caramelized sugar are delicious, and pair nicely with a cup of hot chocolate.
There is also the Coppertop Lounge, where you can get all sorts of great bears, or spiked coffee, hot chocolate or mulled cider.
Overall, I had a great time at Wachusett. I can't wait to go back. -
Review from Sasha B.
For a super-close option to get in a quick day of skiing, Wachusett is the best! The runs are novice, as you would expect for a Boston suburb, but it's fun for a day. There is a ski in apple donuts shack which is amazing! Probably worth the trip out there alone. For more experienced boarders/skiiers, you can try out the terrain park, which is easier and not intimidating. For apres ski, the bar is great and often has fun events. Basically, Wachusett makes for a fun and relaxing day of boarding.

Review from Jeremy K.
Although I was originally supposed to hit up Waterville Valley in New Hampshire, we settled for Wachusetts instead because a) we didn't want to be in the car for a minimum of five hours total - b) because we got lazy - c) I had to be back in time for the elite event at Teatro
So yeah, we slept in a tad later and then hit up Wachusetts. The drive wasn't bad, about an hour from Boston and we managed to arrive there at around 9:35AM on a Monday morning and snuck into one of the last available spots in the main parking lot there. Had we not gotten one of those spots, we would have been stuck into a satellite lot and would have had to wait for the shuttle to bring us up to the main skiing area.
We purchase our lift tickets and our rentals, each being quite expensive compared to what I've seen in other resorts and once we got all geared up, made our way to the lifts. The snow was pretty good and some of the runs were cool. There's a great view of the lake and the valley from the summit too!
The staff is friendly and efficient but there's a lot of beginners at the resort which make it tricky to ski or snowboard without having to dodge the few that fall off the lifts or on the slopes. It can get annoying.
Is it worth it? Well if you don't have a car, sure, why not. Beats driving to New Hampshire or Vermont - it definitely has the convenience factor. But if you do bother to drive to New Hampshire or Vermont, chances are you will get a bigger mountain with more runs and less traffic in one area as everyone will be more spread out.
Without food, the total costs were of about $85 and I had a good time, especially when they opened up one of the lifts early in the afternoon which relieved traffic and gave us access to some really good snow!
The food available at the resort is mediocre, just like in most resorts. Be warned!
So if you ever do consider this place to go skiing be warned that it does get very crowded because of its proximity to Boston and it's also a popular place for beginners! They do have night skiing though and although we didn't participate in that, it seemed better lit than other places I've seen and could be worth it. -
Review from Maria V.
Eek! Super-close to Boston means SUPER CROWDED! It's tiny -- basically everybody tries to crowd onto the same lift -- and freaking DAMN is it icey! This is where I learned to snowboard, which was more like ice skating. We got here the second the place opened and yea, groomed or no, it's ice. Considering most places a bit further north and much bigger are considerably LESS icey and about the same price, just plan for a longer day and go somewhere else. As much as I love the Wa-wa-wachusett jingle (as do most locals who grew up hearing the damn song) I wouldn't recommend this place.
I've been to Wa-wa on a good day -- fresh powder from an overnight storm. Unfortunately most of New England was there too. I'd consider this place really a last resort, I mean, you're going to be waiting in ENORMOUS lift lines. Gah.
Only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one is that it IS ridiculously close to Boston and it is public transport-accessible, which means you can get there even if you don't have a car. And that beats not being able to ski or snowboard at all, so a star just for that.Listed in: Ice or snow--out I go!

Hit up night skiing, that is where it is at. Shorter lines, closer parking, and a little cheaper than during the day. You just have to deal with a grip of teenagers.
The boy and I are learning how to snowboard this year. Wachusett is close, cheaper than most, and pretty big for being only a 45 minute drive. The greens are great for beginners and there are some really fun blues. Not up to the black diamonds yet, but there are some. There is also a pretty awesome looking park for the kids who like to do flips and sh$t.
Food is standard mountain fare, but a little cheaper and Polar drinks are everywhere (I had no idea Polar was even from MA). Also! They have sensored everything in the bathroom and use pond water to flush the toilets, go green!! -

Apple Festival / Octoberfest review. Stay away. Stay far away. This place has been putting on an apple festival for 16 years now and they still don't know what they are doing. Not only is the festival really a small sized craft show but almost everyone that works there is clueless and completely disorganized. Cost of admission was way too expensive for this shabby little debacle.

Wachusett Mountain isn't just a winter destination. It's also a great place to have a company summer outing.
March Communications recently had their annual team building day at Wachusett and we engaged in outdoor activities, like hiking, volleyball and horseshoes.
Afterwards we enjoyed lunch and drinks in one of the private dining rooms and the food was delicious.
The staff is very helpful and I recommend working with Missy Banks for all of your event and catering needs.

Boo to Wachusett who wouldn't let me go skiing on my birthday after I drove 2 hrs. The scenario goes like this:
I have the day off. I have new boots and skis that I want to try out before going to a large resort. I decided to go Wachusetts because it is closer and isn't as bad as Nashoba. I battle all the idiots on Rt. 2 to Wachusett.
As I pull up to the gate I am told, "Dude, it's too full come back at 4." Well, I would have loved to come back at 4 but I couldn't figure out how to waste 3 hours in Princeton. For my efforts I am given a $5 coupon. Nice.
When I have skied at Wachusett the conditions were icy and generally poor. Also, my fiance was bundled (by bundled I mean crashed into and had her head run over) last year by some Asian skiers who spoke no English and couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the coefficient of snow. Unless you live near there, spend your 2 hrs driving north or just resign yourself to going to Big Blue. -

Wachusett isn't bad for a small lil' mountain. It's crowded, so you have to get here early. Most places on the east are icy after 2pm, especially if you are riding the green trails. So I mean...what else do you expect when riding a mountain with 30 trails for eleventy-billion people?? At least there are fun parks to play on. Plus the pro-shop staff is really good here, especially if you want to demo a new board or talk about what boards are good for ya.
This is where I go to teach people who have never been riding before. The bunny slope has a nice magic carpet, so real beginners can get used to riding before they have to conquer a lift.
I also think the cafeteria style food here is better than alot of ski areas. They have fresh made sandwiches to choose from, and sushi rolls, both made right in front of you. -
Review from Jessie Z.
Cheap, convenient and not too crowded. You are gonna get exactly what you expect about a smaller ski area. Honestly - its great! Its nice to spend an hour in the car, fly up and down the mountain for the morning and then get back to the city at a reasonable hour. LOVE that they have half day skiing - either morning or afternoon or evening. We were out on New Years day and it was great! The price was right and it wasn't too crowded.

Review from Kelly Z.
Wachusett Mountain is small, but pretty good for beginners and intermediate social skiers. S and I enjoyed a day of skiing. I probably would get bored if we stayed for a second day, so it's a good thing that it's easy enough to get to and from Boston (commuter rail from North Station or Porter Square up to Fitchburg, free shuttle from station-- just check the shuttle times!).
It's a bit of a bummer that you can't ski between lifts-- have to hike or skate from the bottom of one to the next.
Very crowded-- long lines at lifts, and the lodge was PACKED.
The cafeteria had great healthy, veggie, and vegan options (soups, sushi, pasta, veggies, yogurt). I had a tough time deciding what to get! The restaurant looked good too, though we didn't try it.
The limited arcade had Big Buck Hunter, so I was happy. The bathrooms were quite clean. -

Today I took my boyfriend to Wachusett to "teach" him how to ski. Now, I haven't skied in about 14 years so it took me a few tries to figure it out. But, luckily, Wachusett has a spot for people just like us! I love Ollie's area, even if the ski lesson people showed up soon after us and took over the area. It was a good, no pressure spot to remember how to ski, which I think was stored in my brain right next to "How to Calculate the Angel of an Isosceles Triangle" .
Anyways, there were few issues with today. The prices are alright, the ski rental equipment worked just fine, and the food wasn't too expensive.
Also, it seems like every employee I ran into and talked to (briefly) was in a great mood. That is always nice.
But, be warned. Stupid people abound on this mountain. We accidentally almost took out a mother and child because they parked right in front of the end of the ski lift. Go early to avoid such people. -
Review from David Y.
If you live in Boston metro and need a nearby place to snowboard or ski, you should check this place out. I think its a decent place at a good price. Its not as good as resorts at NH or ME but its close. There are only 3 lifts and a limited selection of routes. So its better for beginners to intermediates. If you want the best riding, this isn't your place. If you want the most convenient, this is right up your alley. I get a season pass and find that's the best value. Otherwise, get a 3 peat which is also a pretty good deal.
The resort food/drink prices are average as well as quality. -

I've only been here to ski at night, and it was:
1) CHEAP: $49 for list pass and equipment rental

Got to go riding this Saturday and it was really coool!
There were many people that night for night skiing and was a big o line but it worth it.
this place is good for kids or if you wanna go ride quick and go home the same day.
if you are used to riding somewhere in VT or bigger mountain, you will definitely feel the trail to be a bit short but good enough to keep going up and down! Now they have park ticket separately so if you gonna rip that area make sure you get that ticket too... -

I'm not a skiier so this is a summer-fall-hiking review. I had a blast hiking Wachusett. It was fairly easy except for a couple rocky parts towards the summit. Most of the hike was easy and quick. I got up to the summit in 1 1/2 hour stayed on the summit for lunch for 20 min then back down in an hour. Allow about 3-4 hours for a round trip depending on the trail you take. I parked on the North Road Pahhhkin' area. (you can tell I'm from Boston)(Bahhsstin) area, right? :-) Anyway The North Road is pretty easy to ascend and there's a picnic table about halfway up with a great view of foliage and Mt. Monadnock in the fall. and green trees with Mt Monadnock the rest of the year. You'll come to a "T" junction with the auto road, cross the road and walk left, and then a quick right will be the Semmuhenna trail. Follow the Sem trail (Yellow Mid State trail blazes) (yellow triangles) to the next wooded picnic table junction. Turn Left onto the West Side trail (there'll be a sign across from the picnic table). Follow West side trail through a beautiful fall foliage section and then you'll come to the "T" intersection (also signed). for Old Indian Trail. Turn Right onto the Old Indian trail continuing to follow yellow and blue triangle blazes up the mountain. There will be a few steeper rocky sections toward the summit. And then it levels out on the summit, and you'll come out at the Ski chair lift. When you come out here, look for the rock that honors the 10th Mountain Division military. Head up the next set of stone "Steps" to the actual summit. There's picnic tables there where you can have lunch or what not. Facilities are at the park HQ on Mountain Road. You can pick up maps there or in the bin of there are any at the Gate by North Rd.
Overall this was a great hike, with pleasant surprises at the top, overall pretty easy hike. North road would be a great hike for dog walkers to if you didnt want to go all the way to the summit, or you could go up North Rd. to Summit road and follow summit road up to the summit. If you had dogs. Make sure dogs are leashed at all times. -

Over a few visits to Wachusett Mtn. I've really learned to like the place. The mountain is small, and they don't get a ton of snow, but you can have a good time here. The spring skiing this past weekend was great, they brought out a grill and set up a bar on the deck. The staff seems to be very cool. Sadly another ski season is over, but def check check out Wachusett if you are nearby.

LOVE this place!!! We came here for Octoberfest, not expecting snow in mid-October, but that's what we got. The festival was fun - with authentic food, bier and music. Also, they had plenty of activities to keep kids and families entertained as well as plenty of vendors to check out. We will definitely be back this season to learn to ski!

We had our wedding ceremony and reception here and it was perfect. Missy, the wedding coordinator, was attentive and very helpful during the planning process. The food was delicious and many of our guests said it was the best wedding food they'd ever had. The staff was great. Our goal was to have a relaxed wedding in a beautiful outdoor setting (and not spend our life savings) and Wachusett exceeded our expectations.
