I started staying at The Tuscany by accident and I'm glad I did (I meant to book a different location) If you're looking for the party, this isn't it and it's not even geographically close to it.  This is definitely the smaller of the W Hotels in NYC and in the quieter Murray Hill neighborhood, but I fell in love with the staff and suites and have now stayed more times than I can count.  I saw Shane mentioned in other reviews, so I thought he was still there.  Very sad that he recently left.

The Tuscany was converted to a hotel so the rooms and suites are all different, but large by NYC standards.  If you're staying in a suite, I would recommend Rm 1600 for the size and layout over most of the others.  It's not the "presidential suite" or even the largest suite in the hotel, but I always remember to ask for that room because of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

The room I stayed in was VERY spacious and very comfortable. Liked everything about the accomodation.

HOWEVER...The service was pathetic! The morning of our checkout, the hotel had a power outage. It was planned and they did NOT communicate it to their guests properly. The elevators were not working, so I had to haul my luggage 8 stories of stairs. Not fun! I complained to the staff (and manager on duty) and they didn't seem to care.

I should really be giving this place a one star because of that, but I did like the room, so 2 star is being generous.

It's one fo the smaller hotels i've been to but it's very nice and the staff was quite friendly. The continental breakfast in the hotel bar is convenient but I found the bagel joint on the corner to be much better.

Likes: Location was great. The Murray Hill area is very close to shopping, time squares and the subway. Easy to grab a cab and head downtown or uptown to the shopping of 5tyh ave or Central Park.

Dislikes: Both the sink and shower experienced slow drainage. The sink was really bad whereas the shower was just a minor annoyance.

The only major thing I expected that we didn't have was a full length mirror. The only mirror was the one above the bathroom sink.

Little did I know, the last time i stayed in NYC was a block away. I'm starting to love staying int eh Murray Hill area.  I would definitely stay here again.

If you are going to stay in a W, this is one of the better ones.  My room is a little cramped by a weird desk.  But otherwise nice.

This is the first time I've stayed at this hotel and I would not stay here again. By far the worst night sleep (or lack thereof) I've ever had... I think I would have been better off at the Holiday Inn.  First off, I come home late and try to log onto the Internet to do some work and find that even after repeatedly trying to connect, I cannot get on for some reason. I tried the ethernet, the wireless, everything. After about an hour I gave up in frustration. For the prices you pay here, the Internet access really should not be third world. But that was just the beginning.

As I am getting ready for bed, I go to deadbolt the front door and find that there are two exposed screws where half the locking mechanism should be. Are you kidding me?  How can you not have a deadbolt on the door? I mean sure, I can put up a privacy sign but still anyone with card access could get in. This is very disconcerting. At this point it's 3am, I'm tired and jet lagged from having taken the red-eye from SF the night before and I just want to go to bed. I prop a chair up against the door under the handle to make myself feel better, not exactly a great barrier, but might make someone who is confused and has the wrong room think twice. Seriously, at the W? Seems crazy but these things happen, where people end up going into the wrong room.

I'm ready for bed and I notice that the door to the bedroom in my suite has a deadbolt on it. So I think to myself, great, I can just bolt that door and feel safe and secure in my nice little bedroom. I close the door to try this, and bam it's stuck. I mean really stuck. I am pushing and pulling, jiggling the doorknob, but no, I am basically barricaded in my room on the 15th floor where you can't even open the windows. I am trapped and I am FREAKING OUT so I call the front desk in a panic, they send security up to my room to break me out. WTF. I cannot believe this is happening. So 15 minutes later, I am free... but so stressed and agitated that I can't sleep. And my bedroom door is open, but remember there's still no deadbolt on the door to the room.

Now the next day, things get worse. I finally fall asleep but then wake up at 8am to people pounding on my door, to come in and fix the deadbolt. Evidently they called and I didn't answer so they just decided to come up. Um, maybe I didn't answer because I was sleeping?  I guess that didn't occur to them. I try to ignore it, but they stand outside my door talking for several minutes and then start banging again. I get up to go to the door, extremely exhausted and annoyed at being woken up and tell them to come back later.

It gets even worse. I met with the hotel manager Candace in the morning who offered to comp me for my entire stay (3 days) to make up for the trauma and distress that I suffered as a guest here last night. Considering what I went through, this seemed reasonable. I then explained that I would rather be issued a voucher for 3 nights stay in the future, since I am currently on business travel. She offered me 10,000 Starwood points instead, saying that this would allow me greater flexibility for other properties.

She also offered to put me in a different room, but only after I had packed my things and moved locations did I discover that they were putting me in a small room rather than a suite. Not a good surprise. I didn't have time to deal with it then, I had to go to a business meeting.  I find out later that my original room has been promised to someone else arriving later in the day. And besides, they take me up to the 1st room and I see that at 4pm, the deadbolt still hasn't been fixed. It was either that or a smoking room, so I said no thanks.

I followed up with the manager in the afternoon, who was very defensive. I told her that  I am not happy with how this matter was resolved, since not only have I been pressured to switch to a smaller room that is in no way equivalent to my previously booked suite, but also, I've now learned 10,000 points is not enough to book even one nights stay here, much less 3 nights as was initially promised. She basically argued with me at the front desk, saying that she never promised that and that clearly I must have misheard?!?!  I KNOW what I heard, and now she is essentially calling me a liar to my face. This is not the kind of customer service I would expect. What ever happened to the customer is always right?

Not only am I feeling sick from the stress of this incident and the lack of sleep last night, now I feel even worse that I have been taken advantage of in how they downgraded the compensation originally offered because I didn't know any better. I hate being a bitchy New Yorker, and I think anyone else in my situation would have been livid to begin with. I was trying to be nice, and I feel like they took advantage of my ignorance and good nature, and I now see that I was too trusting in assuming that what was offered were equal options

The common tread is, for New York standards their rooms are HUGE!  Plenty of closet space.  Even the standard rooms are pretty roomy.  This W is tucked away from the bustle of the city which is fine with me.  Just as long as the transit is located within walking distance I'm fine.  The staff is always super friendly and accommodating.  The Court and the Tuscany is on short list of places to stay.

4.5 stars. I really liked the location since it was not on the busy, noisy main streets, but within walking distance to 5th Ave for shopping or to Grand Central Station, and where the Express Bus stops so I didn't need to take a cab from JFK airport. Across the street on Lexington from it is a family run bagel shop for that AM bite.

When you first walk in, you'll notice the modern, yet vintage feel of the place. All the staff were friendly from doormen, front desk to concierge (concierge located at the other W hotel Court next door) where you can get a free Acura drop off's to places from 10AM-7PM.

We stayed on the 15th floor which had a view. My only complaint is that the toilet seat didn't feel sturdy.

For drinks, the lounge area at the W Court maybe worth checking out.
Would definitely stay here again.

Biggest rooms in NYC for the money. Staff is great, friendly, and accomodating. Hotel is on the small side, almost boutique, but this makes the experience all the better. No annoying tourists, or NY wannabes. Bar is cozy (closes too early for my taste, but...) and you can hear yourself talk to the people you are with. If you need a more clubby feel, you can always go next door to the W Court, which has a bar open late, and gets crowded.

Location is easy from all areas (except NJ). Decent stuff around, close to Grand Central.

I'd recommend the suite.

We had an awesome time in NYC celebrating my husband's birthday this past week. Staying at the W made it even better!  The staff was amazing - courteous, helpful, and not at all pretentious.  The hotel is beautiful - modern decor, smells great, and very clean.  I love how they have water and fruit in the lobby in the mornings, and juice and coconut/chocolate bonbons in the afternoon/evenings.  They even offered us an umbrella to use on the last day since there was rain predicted in the forecast.

The rooms here are smaller than the rooms at the W Union Square but it is also significantly cheaper per night.  This W has more of a homey feel because it's smaller, so it seems like everyone knows and remembers you.  It's located in a quiet neighborhood, yet it is walking distance (about 3 blocks) to Grand Central Station, so it's not in an inconvenient location.

I would definitely stay here again.  Thank you to the staff at the W.

I have stayed at the W Tuscany for the past 3 months and now it sucks going anywhere else because it just simply cannot compare!! I consider the Tuscany my home away from home and all the staff is so nice and treat me so well.

It was unfortunate that THIS week, my reservations got screwed up and they couldnt accomodate me. I moved over to the W New York on 49th and Lexington, and I am so annoyed. The staff there is the exact opposite, they are rude, into themselves, slow to care/solve any problem. They billed me wrong and it was like I was bothering THEM to reverse the Amex charge. UGH.

Back to the Tuscany... how come I think it deserves 5 stars? Not only did I become friends with the staff, where they greeted me as I went in and out, but I would say the Tuscany is very unique. It is a smaller boutique hotel and the traffic is much more low key. This is what I prefer when I come home after a long day's work. When I have guests visiting me in nYC, I usually move to Times Square W, just because theres more going on there and more to see. But M-F Tuscany is what I prefer. The General Manager has also taken the time to write me emails and thanks to make sure I am taken care of. I have received gift bags, been invited to open bar, so I definitely value being noticed and taken care of.

The rooms at the Tuscany are not the MOST modern, but they are huge. I have been able to lay out to do yoga, on the floor, tons of walking space, TONS of closet space, and the room service and cleaning are very consistent. I have been to too many hotels where those services have just completely turned me off.

The gym at the Tuscany is always empty! it's awesome! although I've only gone a few times, it is kept sooo clean and everything is always in place. The best part of the Tuscany is my friend Shane. He works on the weekdays and in the evenings at the front desk. Ask for him if you ever stay there! i heart shane :)

The W Tuscany is hands-down one of my favorite places to stay in NYC. It is low-key and less pretentious than other W's. The rooms are spacious and the water pressure in the shower will blow you away (literally). Bliss products are always a win, and the location is very convenient to all modes of transportation, being just a few short blocks from Grand Central.

Do not miss the opportunity to utilize the superb fitness center- brand new equipment, including cardio with iPod docks so you can view your playlist on the touchscreen. This hotel has fantastic amenities and that's what you are paying for, so enjoy!

This W certainly lives up to it's swanky reputation.  Both the lobby and bar are very cozy, albeit smaller than most W's that I've stayed at.

Surprisingly the room I got was very spacious - especially for a hotel room in NYC.  It's in a more quiet and low key part of town, so I enjoyed that.  I've stayed at the one on Broadway which I also like for other reasons (see more on my review for that hotel).

Overall, I enjoyed the impeccably decorated rooms, the friendly staff and general positive experience at this hotel.

I'm starting to think like Tony S, you can no longer expect good service - you have to be persistent which is really exhausting to do.  I'm giving this W 4 stars only because relative to the sad state many of the other Ws are in, this one looks pretty darn good and the service was certainly above the rest, but I do find you have to ask for a few things that should just be there, and you have to stay on top of your bill.

This W relative to the W Times Square, Lex Ave, and the W Court is much nicer and cleaner.  The room is quite large for the size and its far quieter.

Also the service was VERY prompt when I called down asking for something to be brought up to my room- like the TV remote that was missing from my room.  Usually I wait like 30 minutes in other hotels.

I stay at a lot of the W properties and I'm building up a little database of favourites.  The W Tuscany in any other city would be on my no go list, but in New York it is more than acceptable.

The rooms are massive for this city, as a frequent guest I often get an upgrade and found myself in a corner room with the usual lovely W bed and ameneties.  Very impressive.

Sadly the hotel has seen better days as one of the older properties in the brand the room and surrounding parts were looking pretty shabby.  My bathtub had cracked enamel which actually felt pretty uncomfortable when you laid down in the bath and could cause a nasty scratch or graze if you caught it in the wrong place.

In addition to this every time my air conditioning started or stopped it would rattle, annoying at 8pm but really frustrating at 3 in the morning when you are trying to sleep.  Turn it off and I would have baked in the summer New York heat.  I had to ask five times for someone to fix it and spent two largely sleepless nights.  Once they did fix it, it was fine.

The food is very expensive but no more so than any other 4/5 star hotel but $45 for a pancake breakfast delivered to my room still seems pretty ridiculous.

The hotel is well equipped with a pretty reasonable gym, a snack bar and you also get full access to the neighbouring larger property W The Court which was a nice bonus.

I made use of their complimentary Acura service for the first time, they have brand spanking new MDXs that will take you anywhere in Manhattan during business hours.  I love this service as it saves me (and my company) taxi fees a plenty.  Not all the advertised services work as well though, I stay in Starwood properties a lot and one of the benefits I get is free bottled water each day.  It is by far my favourite amenity as the Voss water they give you is $6 a throw from the minibar.  I only ever recevied water the day I checked in and I ended up having to ransack the minibar, but to their credit they did knock it off the bill with no argument.

So why the three stars?  The stay was far from perfect and I don't mind running into issues in hotels but the lack of response or interest from the "Whatever/Whenever" service was disappointing.  I don't expect to have to call for maintenance 5 times.

I'd definitely give this place a go with the caveat that you have to be persistent to get any speed of service here.  I mentioned this to the front desk on check out and they promised to get back to me, I heard nothing.

Absolutely love this hotel.  Charming lobby and staff, gave us an upgrade, lovely.  The bed and bedding are fantastic.  The room was so cozy and comfy, a perfect oasis when visiting the NYC lifestyle.

Also have to mention the 6 different types of complimentary Bliss beauty products found in the gorgeous all marble bath and the huge flat screen TV (not my personal huge turn on but I know people dig that stuff.)

Finally, the crowd staying here looked pretty cool AND gorgeous so if you are single or getting in the mix, this could be a GREAT choice for you.

Expensive as hell but I think it's the going rate in Manhattan.  My husband's company paid the bill so I didn't complain.  I'm way too cheap to spend $400+ a night anywhere.

Rock star hip.  I was a bit blown away.  Not the typical business-type hotel.  Hip dudes.. hella hip.  I could imagine Bret Michaels from Rock of Love staying at W Tuscany.

The room was gi-normous.  Bliss organic bath products galore.  I-pod docking station.  King size bed.  Furry chic blanket.  Bangin' decor.  Doormen that are clearly models.  Elevator with blue lights -- club-esque.  Day passes to the Equinox.  Kick ass customer service.

The location was amazing.  Walking distance of Grand Central and my BFF's apartment in Murray Hill.

Not many amenities.  No breakfast included or cocktail hour.  What's up with that?

Good sh*t.  I'd stay there again, ONLY if someone else were paying for it.

This hotel has the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on.  Also, the rooms are enormous by New York standards and they use Bliss toiletries.  What more can you ask for?

The service is also very good.  We were traveling with two cats and were given complimentary litter, a litter box, food and bottled water plus cute bowls to put them in, toys, and even treats.  What in the world?  I LOVE pet-friendly businesses, but these people take it to an extreme.  Awesome!

My only complaint is that the room service food could be better, but whatever.  I still really really really like this hotel and would stay here again just for fun.

This is my second favorite W Hotel in NYC.  The service is NOT quite as good as the Court in my opinion, and I've stayed at both several times.  I will say that the concierge service is great, and I really enjoy the hotel bar for a nightcap.

Oh, the doormen are eye candy.  GORGEOUS.  Now that was a smart marketing decision ;).

My husband proposed to me here, but that's not why I love this place so much.

Largest standard rooms in the city.
Great service.
Modern & clean.

What more could you want?

We've stayed at all the W hotels in the city except for the one on Lex. This is one of our favorites. It feels more like an apartment than just a hotel room. It's more warm and cozy. It's also very close to Grand Central so great for people who need to get on a train.

Soundproofing is not so great. It's very quiet at night unlike the Times Square & Union Square locations which is nice if you actually want to sleep!

Overall Impression:
The W Tuscany was a nice, friendly place.  This location has a much more manageable scale and far less ostentatious vibe than some of their other properties.  However, it was incredibly pricey.  Maybe it was just bad timing [week of September 24th, or Advertising Week, which wasn't actually the reason for my trip], but prices were about twice what you would usually expect to pay.

Staying here felt like staying in a Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware:  a big wood framed leaning mirror against one wall; a country style door with an 8-pane window door separating the main room from the entryway / bathroom / mini-bar area; black and white photos of random landscapes and still lifes on a ledge built into the wall; bedding and furniture all done up in rich browns and reds.  It really was like stepping into a catalog.

Highlights / Lowlights:

What was great
- The TV set up and channel selection.  Nice flat screen that you've come to expect from the W [maybe a bit cramped on top of the work space], but the big bonus was BBC America and Current being among the available networks.

What wasn't so great
- The price.  Seriously, I felt like I was paying rent when I checked out after just a 2-night stay.

Random note
- It's not a dead ringer or anything, but from your peripheral vision as you walk in at night, the bar area in the lobby reminds me of the Mexico City bar where Pierce Brosnan meets Greg Kinnear in Matador

Scorecard:

Would I stay here again?  Yes, but only if prices returned to 'normal' NYC levels [i.e., anything less than $400/night]

Did it seem a good value?  Um, no.  Not this time.

Essentials
Service - pretty good, helpful; I actually walked into the neighboring W Court, which is two doors down and they did allow me to check in there.  I just had to walk in and pick up my key at the Tuscany.  Instead of making me feel like an ass, they kept things smooth for me.
Bed - very good, per W norms
Bathroom - good, but not the typical W luxury spa effect
Work space - good, maybe a bit cramped with the TV, but the internet connection remained solid at all times
Storage - very good, lots of space

Amenities
Room service - fine, but I didn't really challenge them, just getting coffee each morning
Concierge - n/a, I didn't use them
TV / Entertainment - very good; love the BBC America / Current options

Alright, so everyone's just a little tired of the whole "W-Hotel" vibe and experience.  I, however, keep coming back to this place for several reasons.

1) It's fairly quiet seeing as how it's on an "off" street.
2) It's conveniently located.
3) The rooms are huge by NY standards.
4) Fantastic service.  I have had several strange incidents (i.e. injuries, travel problems, illnesses) happen while staying in NY and the W-Tuscany has always been overly accommodating.

The biggest room of all the W's I have stayed; clearly a renovation from an old apartment building.  Bed is comfortable, room size is decent, but the bathroom is ultra small with either original or retro fixtures.

Bar is not as pretentious as Wetbar at the Court, but that is not saying much when you are discussing W.  But you can still enjoy the almost cheesy modern decor, the expensive drinks, and the ever snobby New York professionals with cooler than thou attitude.

I do have to comment on how nice and friendly the doorman and the front desk staff are.  Anybody working at W that deals with clients is always young, energetic, and good looking.

What is not to love about New York!!

When you stay at The W, you know you are livin the good life.

The Tuscany confirms this without a doubt.

It's pretty cool The Tuscany and The Court are next door to each other, and the bars in the bottom of both are absolutely amazing - I enjoyed my reserved table almost as much as I enjoyed being in the same bar as andy roddick, which was almost as much as I enjoyed the bouncer kicking out 2 ugly people for making out hardcore (nobody wants to see that, even if we are drunk).

No 5th star since there are nicer W's in New York, and I blew the fuse in my "spectacular room" twice. But any hotel that dedicates an entire room in your suite to the bar is fine by me.

Holy humongous rooms, Batman!  I've stayed at several W hotels, and this one has the biggest rooms I've seen. Colossal for NY standards.  Love the featherbed and the BlissSpa products.  If I need to stay in Midtown again, I'll choose this hotel first.

Maybe it was because we were next to the elevator, but our room was huge (it was an odd shape with a long hallway that wrapped around the elevator shaft, but wasn't noisy or otherwise disturbing).  This was one of my favorite hotel experiences I have had in NY.  The gym was great.  The staff was super friendly.  If you are staying in Midtown, this is a wonderful choice.  I've stayed in other Ws and prefer this one.

i love this hotel AND the freakishly hot doorman (shawn? shane? call me!).    Nestled on a calm street in midtown, this hotel has the cozy charm of a neighborhood hotel with all the amenities of a trendy boutique hotel.

When i first was searching for hotels in NYC,  The Tuscany caught my eye because 1) it was $100-$150 cheaper than the other W hotels, 2) it has nearly twice the sq footage (rooms are about 500 sq feet while others were at 250-280 sq ft. (which i think in itself already deserves 4 stars)  I booked the room immediately.

Nice hotel? check.  Fancy dinner reservations? check.  New outfit? check...we were ready to take over the city.    When we arrived,  the girls and i were in store for more than what we paid for..... Incredibly , freakishly hot eye candy!!! yes...the men that check you in, open your doors, greets you at the door are all HOT HOT HOT (from what i hear, they do their recruiting at modeling agencies)... I almost wanted to tell them, " i don't mind paying  more for our rooms, its not fair that all this eye candy is for our viewing pleasure... how much do you want? 50 more a night? a 100? ok fine 200 it is".. I ALMOST wanted to tell them but i refrained.

As for the rooms...Heavenly!!!  Decor is ultra chic and the beds were so comfy, i WANTED to stay in bed all day.   Nestled between 410 thread count sheets, goose down pillows,  goose down feather bed and comforter... I never slept so well in my life.

The rooms are the size of an apartment. Seriously. I could have lived there. The bed is definitely one of the best I've slept in. The staff was very helpful as well. I wish I didn't have to pay for my internet access, but oh well, it's what the expense account is for!

I love this hotel. The service is outstanding and the rooms are big and comfortable for Manhattan. W  Hotels are generally consistent and this one holds true to that. Room service can be a bit of a wait - but heck its NYC, get out and eat at any of the great places right in the neighborhood.

Dreamy feather bed, nice view of the Empire State Building, centrally located by Grand Central Station, awesome huge shower head, great smelling full collection of soapy incidentals, big room and nice staff.  Only thing I would ask for is free internet and an on location hot tub or steam room.  For the price comparison to the larger hotels in the middle of the more lively hoods, it's a good trade off (quieter neighborhood, but still very convenient, maybe even more so if you're headed all over town.)  They had fresh PB cookies upon check in, too.  mm!  And if you don't want to go far for dinner or drinks, there's a restaurant in the W Court Hotel next door, and a bar in each.

i'm trying to move over to starwoods b/c of marriotts declining customer service. this was my first switch, and it was a good one.  nice hotel, tucked away in murray hill.  the car service was not really available and the guys out front suck at hailing a cab.  the food is SUPER expensive but the veggie burger i got from room service was AWESOME!!!! the room was HUGE and the bed was heavenly (they ain't lying).  five stars bay-beeeeeeeeeeee.
