Food is delicious and good service. Upscale Vietnamese place. You pay more here but the food is wonderful.
I usually get the #50 rice plate dish: lemongrass chicken, pickled veggies, rice and imperial rolls. The chicken is so flavorful and the imperial rolls are amazing. They are what King Eggroll aspires to be. Very close to the HP Pavilion in San Jose and fast. -

A nice San Jose restaurant!
I ended up getting the Heo Kho To, which was a pork carmelized in garlic, fish sauce, and black pepper. It had a mild flavor that was just delightful.
There's a nice, simple, understatement in the ambiance as well. Not overly decorated, but it feels comfortable.
Overall, a wonderful spot if you're looking for a good bite in San Jose! -

mmmhm, hu tieu ba nam sadec with clear noodles! Always a winner.
I can't get enough of the succulent broth... and the fried cracker/shrimp pocket whatever of course!
Items are priced higher than at other Vietnamese restaurants, but you have to understand that they are targeting a more upscale clientele and have taken many steps to become a more elegant restaurant. And $8.95 for a bowl of hu tieu isn't too bad considering no other restaurants even come close to offering such a tasty bowl. I probably wouldn't get the banh khot again though.
Parking is pretty good here.
I have to come back and see how they do with more traditional home-style dishes.Listed in: VIETNAMEHH., Lifetime Membership

Nice, quiet, well-decorated asian-style interior keeps the noise level down (important factor when you are coming by on weekends and you see families nearby). You can use this restaurant for any occasions. Clean service and one of the nicest restroom.
Food is great. One of the best Vietnamese restaurant. A lot of variety and I've always had good experience trying a new thing on the menu. -

I'm new to the Pho game. I know I know, what the Phock?
I searched Yelp for restaurants in my vicinity and this one came up with good reviews. I like that it looks like a nice, normal restaurant inside not some greasy taqueria like other Pho restaurants I've tried.
I ordered the spicy beef soup and it was quite good. I wish I could've asked for no onions though. My baby ate all my bean sprouts too so that was a bonus. He is a picky picky eater. Dude ordered some seafood concoction that he gave 2 thumbs up.
We'll be back pho sho! -
Review from Chris L.
It's funny, because I can't help but utter an apprehensive groan any time a friend suggests VT for dinner.
-I like that this place is clean, that their staff is relatively plentiful (but still slow and quasi-attentive), that their menu is huge and diverse. but...
this place just doesn't feel the same at ALL from the old VT that I grew up with in the 90's. after the remodel, the flavors also changed. it's far too sweet now, literally every dish and every part of the dish is sugared-up. I definitely think this is to appeal to the palettes of more americanized diners.
-the prices are ~$2 more than what you would see at a more casual pho/com tam restaurant but with really no appreciable improvement in taste or complexity.
-the dishes are not presented in any sophisticated manner, nor is this restaurant truly gourmet by any stretch.
what I've ordered in the past and recently:
1) bun thit nuong - over sugary glaze to the pork.
-nuoc mam is too sweet so that = 2x the diabetes and tooth decay.
-they use thin tenderloin pork instead of pork butt (thus not as tasty or fatty)
- portions are consistent w/ a hole in the wall place. but keep in mind +$2!
2) banh hoi - the banh hoi noodle sheets are very good quality here, but again, I made the mistake of ordering the grilled beef, which was sweet also.
3) bun bo nuong (wrapped around onion) - this was one of the better dishes here, as the onion took away some of the sweetness that normally over powers the meat.
4) my fave: cafe sua da + kalhua! - I'm not sure how much kalhua they pour into this drink, but it works really well! perhaps its just the alcoholism in me that makes this such an amazing idea for a drink. this one costs $7 while a regular cafe sua da costs $3.99, so $3 for some alchy isn't a bad deal !
**really, there are many vietnamese restaurants with better dishes for people who know vietnamese food. but if you do already know, then you probably won't mark this as your first choice. Its really a good place to get people who aren't used to vietnamese food, to start falling in love with it. nothing is cooked poorly here, but then it just doesn't taste the way it Reealllly should. -

To be honest, I am not sure why this place was so hyped up.
The staffs are friendly but really awkward.
My girlfriend and I ate here because we noticed the many great reviews on yelp. The food was decent but we found hair in our food so that was pretty disgusting.
Just not worth coming back to. -

When I think of Vang Tau, the first thought that comes to my mind is "FANCY SCHMANCY Vietnamese food refined to the American palate". I love the taste of authentic vietnamese dishes, but Vang Tau somehow can manage to mellow out their extreme flavors and still make it taste good.
I usually start of with the banh khot as an appetizer. It's pretty greasy but I haven't had better banh khot anywhere else in San Jose.
I've never been served Bun Bo Nuong (Vermicilli noodles with grilled beef and vegetables) the way that they serve it here. They wrap onions and been sprout inside of a beef slice then grill it. There are about 8 beef rolls that come in a bowl of your vermicilli noodles with fresh greens. You toss it in a little bit of their mild nuoc mam and enjoy. They even give you daikon and carrot pickles for more flavor. It's my favorite.
My boyfriend loves the com tam thit nuong with bi (broken rice with grilled pork and shredded pork).
The ambiance of the restaurant is superb, it isn't like most Vietnamese restaurants. Vung Tau has restaurant hosts, modern decoration, and good service. It's clean and the lighting makes it great for a casual date. The prices are a bit higher than other restaurants but you are pretty much guaranteed consistency and attentive service. -

First the price for this place is a bit above average. Not alot but at most $1-$2 .
Second is the food is above average but not outstanding. It's taste and has a wide range of options.
Third the setting and environmental of the restaurant is really good. Great place to take date. Very big place even though it looks a bit small.
Overall I was very happy with the place and do plan on going again. -

I love this place. I would consider it a little more up class than the traditional Vietnamese restaurants. Very clean, actually has "service."
Would have gotten 5 stars if they were open all day and a bigger parking lot. -
Review from Andrew C.
They have some of the best Banh Khot in the area ("Crisp rice four cupcakes w/shrimp and scallions. Served with mixed greens" not my pic http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Wrap 'em up with some mint, lettuce (the mixed greens) and nuoc cham. Delicious.
Higher prices vs. most other Vietnamese places, but clean with updated decor and probably some of the better service you'll find at a Vietnamese restaurant. I was sad when their more fusion-y SF outpost Bong Su shut down because it gave Slanted Door some much needed higher end competition, but I digress.Listed in: What the Pho-ck?

I love this place. Quick story. I went here for a friends birthday party. Group of 15 of us and 14 of us ordered #64 (obviously). The last guy, even though he had been there before and knew the power of the #64 tried something knew. His came out it and looked really good. Afterwords we asked him how it went. He said, "I'm really glad I ordered it." I said, "yea it looked good." He said, "No, it just reminded me how much I missed the #64 and will never order anything else ever again." Moral of the story order #64.

Best Hu Tieu Kho ever!!!!
I came here a couple of times and only for one reason, their Hu Tieu Ba Nam Sa Dec Kho. Everytime I try to order something new, I always back out in the end and order the same thing everytime. This review is based only on the only dish I usually get.
Well, one complaint is their side soup because the bowl is a little small for the spoon they gave us -

I really love this place. They have great food and desserts and I have been going here for hella long since I was a kid. The remodeling of the place makes the environment much cleaner and I am definitely a regular at this place so I am seated every time I come to this place. The only thing I do not like is the expensive price of the dishes and there is no large size for food anymore.

We normally ate at Vung Tau 3 on Mowry, but this time because of work schedule, we decided to come to Vung Tau on Santa Clara.
The menu is the same, so we are navigating in known waters here. Party of 18, so we ordered plenty of food. Service was awesome !! That's why I wanted to write this review. The main waiter was so polite and efficient, checking on us very often, warning about the delay ( not too bad at all, we were 18 pp after all ), changing plates, refilling rice and water... Absolutely perfect!
Highly recommend this place. The food and the service are excellent! -

I believe this must be the original Vung Tau, I've been to Vung Tau II before this one. Lets just say that Vung Tau is probably my favorite vietnamese restaurant. From what I can tell it serves more traditional vietnamese food outside of the normal Banh Mi or Pho. It is definitely a must try since it is rare to find a vietnamese restaurant that does so.

Review from Leanne P.
I've been to Vung Tau 2 and 3, but I've finally made it to #1!
My friend took G and I here on the day after Thanksgiving for lunch. It was really empty and we got to stay on the right side of the restaurant (the prettier side in my opinion. I went back here and they sat me on the left side of the place, but that area has a much more diner feel to it). After looking through the extensive menu (and getting confused by all the options), my friend ordered for me :)
This is not a pho place. Let me emphasize that. THEY DO NOT SERVE PHO HERE. They do, however, have some excellent soup dishes (served family style) or noodle dishes (single serving only, and its not pho. Again its NOT PHO.) haha I get so tired of people saying that a Vietnamese restaurant sucks because they don't have pho... but its because they're not a pho restaurant!
Anyway, back to my review. I got the rice plate with grilled shrimp and chicken with a cup of broth (which is complimentary, you just need to ask for it). They serve this with a cup of nuc mum (my spelling sucks, its fish sauce). They do put pepper flakes in the nuc mum so be careful if you're anti-spice (like me!) My friend taught me the most awesome way of eating this stuff... Eat the pickled veggies first (similar to the veggies in your standard banh mi... yum!) then smash the rice, and pour some nuc mum over the rice and meat. Don't use all of it, it may become too spicy... But feel free to use around half the cup. It gives it a nice tangy flavor. The shrimp and chicken are grilled to perfection!
G got their house special fried rice which is really yummy, but tends to be a small portion. Being the nice wife that I am, I let him have some of my chicken (because they give you two pretty large pieces).
We really loved it and we've been back already, but we'll definitely be back again!Listed in: I swear I'm part Vietnamese

Review from Janice C.
I was a bit skeptical when I heard that there was this "fancy" Vietnamese resto in San Jose that everyone goes to because let's face it, I've never been to a fancy Vietnamese place before!
Imagine my surprise when I walked in and found a very clean, warmly lit, spacious place!
Our friendly server was so efficient, he was already positioned to take our order right then and there. We sent him away disappointed, only with drink orders for the meantime. (but he proved to be really quite nice and on point with his service)
I strongly advise to do family style dining to maximize your tasting options, I mean, you'll already have a hard time figuring out what to order from the 100+ items on the menu! We tried the Banh Khot (crispy rice flour cupcakes with shrimp and scallions), Goi Tom Thit (shrimp, pork and jellyfish mint salad), Shaking beef, Tamarind soup with catfish (a sweet-sour soup with tomatoes and celery) and Grilled pork over rice. I think we all had our quiet moments throughout this meal because everything was just so, so GOOD! Personally, I really liked the jellyfish salad, its a nice alternative to your usual green papaya salad. The jellyfish brought back memories of my childhood in Manila when my family would go Chinese banquets. I would always HOG all the cold jellyfish salad off the plate. (I was a weird kid, I liked foods that were slimy and squishy)
Wash it all down with their not-too-sweet Thai iced tea and really, your night is just complete.
Now, I know why everyone I know has been here. If I'm craving to eat Viet food in a fancy setting and don't want to pay hundreds of $$ at Slanted Door, I'll definitely come here. -

Nom nom nom nom nom nom nom.
I have been bummed recently and it's been nice to see old OG yelper folks. Tonight I went here for the first time and I am mos def a fan!!
The fried egg rolls were delicious.
Super fresh lettuce and fixings
The pork meatballs totally hit the spot
The calamari was also good (perfect breading.. super light and crispy).
The wait staff is incredibly friendly, helpful and made some suggestions. They totally take the time to explain the dishes to make sure it is what you want. Additionally the food was out super quick... yeahy buddy!
Overall.. will be back!
Other than the Santa Cruz Diner, I have never seen a menu with almost 150 items... CRAZY -

4.5 Stars
Vung Tau has a beautifully designed restaurant and is conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Jose. Don't be doubtful of the food quality because of the nicely decorated interior. This restaurant thoroughly delivers on some quality, tasty Vietnamese dishes!
I suggest not to order your typical dishes like bun (rice noodle salad) or pho (rice noodle soup) here because there are a lot of other Vietnamese restaurants in San Jose that serve these dishes and sometimes even specialize in them.
During my last visit I was able to try these various dishes:
Banh Khot
*Crisp flour rice cupcakes with shrimp and scallions served with mixed greens (lettuce and mint) and nuoc mam (fish sauce) on the side.
*7 pieces.
*You can wrap these little half domes in the accompanying lettuce or eat them by themselves. You'll be able to taste a variety of textures with this dish. The outside of the rice cupcakes are perfectly crispy, but are contrastingly soft once you reach the center.
*I highly recommend this appetizer.
Canh Chua Ca Bong Lau
*Tamarind soup with catfish, tomatoes, celery, bean sprouts, and rice paddy herbs.
*Serves 3-4 people.
*This soup will take your taste buds on a sweet and sour journey. This isn't the same as hot and sour soup so you won't find a spicy flavor while enjoying this.
*The soup is accompanied with a medley of vegetables and my stomach couldn't be happier. The catfish was also cooked perfectly and was very tender. I could barely taste any fishy flavor while eating the catfish.
*This soup is a must order on a cold winter night.
Ca Tuyet Kho To
*Seabass carmelized with garlic and fish sauce served in an earth pot.
*The sauce in this dish is SOOOOO GOOD and tastes even better when eaten with white rice. I can probably just eat rice with this sauce and call it a meal!
*The texture of the Seabass was buttery and even more tender than the catfish.
Banh Tam Bi
*Shredded pork & coconut milk served with big rice noodles & chopped mixed vegetables (diced greens and bean sprouts).
*This was the weakest dish after having some really outstanding ones before it.
*The shredded pork was slightly dry, but pouring the coconut milk over it and mixing it together with the noddles made the dish a little better.
*The dish was also somewhat cold so it probably made it less appetizing.
*The menu describes the noodles are big rice noodles, but they were actually thin and round with a soft texture. The noodles tasted fresh.
Vung Tau is a great restaurant to bring family, friends, and even a date. The price is a little more expensive than your typical Vietnamese restaurant, but what you get in return are delicious dishes in a nice, upscale dining environment.

Review from Marie N.
Mountain View, CA
I have absolutely no complaints here (except that I wish their location was closer to where I live (Mountain View/Palo Alto/Sunnyvale area).
This is not your typical Vietnamese Pho restaurant that you see in almost every city in the SF bay area. This place offers many traditional Vietnamese cuisines and everything I've tried here so far has always been pretty amazing in taste, quality, and presentation. Yes, this place is pricer than in most Vietnamese restaurants in the area, but in comparison to the high end Vietnamese restaurants in San Francisco, this place is worth every penny.
Recommendations:
1) Appetizers: Banh Khot (crip rice flower cakes served with greens and a dipping sauce) and the Cha Gio (eggrolls). YUM. The outside of the both the cake and egg rolls is perfectly fried. They can be eaten plain or wrapped up in lettuce and herbs than dipped into the sauce.
2) Noodle Soup (Hu Tieu): Ba Nam Sadec (w/ jumbo prawns, crap, & lean pork loin). OK, so if you're a crab lover, just note that you only get one craw in this noodle soup bowl but the broth is quite tasty without being to heavy or salty (like in some of the hole-in-the wall places for Hu Tieu).
3) Shrimp (Tom): Tom Cang Kho Tau (Jumbo water prawns simmered w/ garlic & onion reduction). When I have a salt craving, I make sure that every drop from the rich sauce makes it to my plate w/ my rice....soooooo GOOD! Otherwise this can be quite the dainty dish to savor as the flavor is pretty intense. A little goes a long way w/ your rice on the side.
I've never made reservations here but if you want to avoid problems with parking, waiting, and big crowds, I would come here during a weekday or week night. -

This place is yummy and not your average PHO place. It's a really nice Vietnamese restaurant. They have a lot of good appetizers and dishes. I can't remember the names of the items but I will def be coming back here. We ordered take out, but one day I will make it there dining in. It gets crowded a lot and parking lot isn't super big but try it out you won't be disappointed

San Jose, CA
In my book, this place wins best "date spot" for Vietnamese food. Not only is the outside and inside beautifully decorated, the seating is intimate and comfortable. Don't be fooled by its decor...it STILL manages to deliver QUALITY food at very reasonable prices. Mileu= 5/5
The service is always great...from the host/hostess taking you to your seat to the waiters serving your food. They do the perfect job of making sure you are catered to, but not to the point where it is overbearing. Service= 5/5
Vung Tau is not known for any "signature" dish, BUT I have NEVER EVER been disappointed in something that I ordered. All the foods had been a 4/5. Sure, there are other pho restaurant with better pho, or other hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese spot with better rice plates, but this place does an incredible job in making EVERYTHING good.
I definitely recommend the Com Dia Dac Biet I (grilled onion beef, green salad, egg roll & fried rice). Just look at the picture uploaded, and DON'T tell me that it doesn't look gorgeous! The salad is incredibly fresh; it's topped with their own specialty dressing that's like a buttery but less acidic version of balsamic vinaigrette. A+! The fried rice is very good too! The ONLY critique that I have is that the eggroll is a bit soggy and the grilled onion beef seems a little overcooked. But still, the beef tasted like well-marinated Korean BBQ, and overall, the food was just so good that it outweighs the texture issue. You get the enormous plate for $12.50. Com Dia Dac Biet I= 4.5/5.
I can't wait to go back again. I will update you soon about the reviews of Com Dia Dac Biet II (carmelized chicken, shrimp imperial rolls, steamed veggies & fried rice). -
Review from Dung N.
I remember coming to this restaurant as a kid and then I've watched it transform to something even greater than it was before. Yes, the prices have went up but I wouldn't mind paying the extra couple bucks for the ambiance. This is the nicest Vung Tau location, and it's not just an opinion, it's an actual fact. I've lost count of the items that I've tried, but neither one thing off their menu has yet to disappoint me. My favorite has got to be their tom kho tau. You were always see this dish at our table when we dine here.
Whenever friends or coworkers are interested in trying out Vietnamese food, I always recommend them to Vung Tau. I was actually born in Vung Tau, so extraaaaa points for making the name of my birthplace even more wonderful!! -

Last minute dinner recommendation from a friend. He's still my friend!
Just what I was looking for when I was in the mood for Vietnamese egg rools. Lots of leaf lettuce, herbs and pickle to wrap around hearty, crispy rolls. Not to mention a spicy, tangy, sweet fish sauce for dipping.
Had a spicy chicken stew for entree. Nearly blew my eybrows off, but that's the way I like it.
There are a number of vegetarian options too.
I tasted almost everything our party ordered. All good, all quality.
It's a bit "up market" price wise, but worth every penny. -

This is my fav viet place
It's clean
It's famous
It's clean.
I usually get clay pot catfish and salt and pepper shrimp, sometimes with and sometimes without heads.
Everything on the menu is special here,
It has a mention in the Michelin guide.
It was because of this place I foundd vegan house across the street, it was so packed in here, and the cue was so long, I went across the street.
Thisis def worthna check out, be prepared for them to be very busy and def gonna be a wait on the weekends and prob at lunch too.
Give takeout a try, I have been know to do that many times and be very happy.
Oh, and it's clean....

I've been to this restaurant a few times and so far, I have not been disappointed. Their cam tam has more pork meat in their bi. They are known for that. It's delicious. My mom even bought some last time to take home. Their canh chua (sea bass or catfish) and clay pots (pork or sea bass) are delicious. I'll definitely be back to try more dishes.

Vegetarian Point of View.
Not at all impressed.
Co-workers raved about this place (their vietnamese).
I got some veggies with noodles (pan fried noodles) drenched in some thick overly salty soy sauce.
Disappointing.
Could taste only salt...and I had some funky after taste in my mouth...which tells me the veggie entree wasn't completely vegetarian. :( -

Came here because of the reviews of other Yelpers. Wanted to show some out of town people what San Jose Vietnamese food taste like. So ended up coming here.
The place was clean and service was nice. The menu had over 200 items to chose from.
However; the prices were higher than normal for Vietnamese food. The portions were small. And who really needs that many options when most are just have one ingredient instead of another. -
Review from Andre N.
Damn this place gets packed! Just a note, i didnt have the hu tieu. My family and I have family style dinner. We ordered the sweet and spicy soup, some fish dish that i forgot about and some other seafood dish. Just goes to show that you can pass on those dishes since i dont remember them. The spicy soup however is really good. It seems like alot of places makes that dish pretty good. All the dishes are pretty expensive but id say its worth it given the quality of the food and how nice and clean this place is.
The overall decor of this place is really nice. Fancy in a way. When you walk in the counter is large and sort of reminds me of a hotel counter. Kinda awkward waiting area when it gets packed because theres a smal bench and people are just standing around int he waiting area while there are tables less than 2 feet away. Thats one thing i didnt like about the place is the structure. The place has a seating area where it curves around and another area which is typical with the booths and all. I dunno i just thought that was a little weird since the waiting area gets supper packed and i dont like if a whole family is standing right behind me as i eat. -

This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE place for vietnamese food! The Bahn Khot is to die for, as well as the onion rolled beef. The bun, soups and broken rice are all amazing! I have never had a bad dish here, even when ordering to go. The place is clean, staff is friendly and it's always busy.
Parking is a hassel if you go during the lunch hour so brin change for the meters. -

I went there a few times. This restaurant was nice in terms of decor relatively compared with other Vietnamese restaurants. Why the two stars?
I ate out with a staff member once. While we were eating, a small Cockroach came out of nowhere. I told one of the server and he swatted the thing in front of us. Well unfortunately the roach got away but the server left. The roach came out again and I call another waiter to point this out. He got rid of the bug but by this time, all my appetite was gone.
Have not gone back since. -

It is a nice Vietnamese restuarant but the food is overpriced. The quality/taste does not live up to the price. We ordered chicken fried rice and the meat was not even cooked so we had to send it back. We also ordered curry but it was nothing out of the ordinary. Would not be coming back.
