Otis is my new favorite downtown bar! Simply it rocks up and down and all around.....
From reasonably price drinks to soul stealing music to the scene, you cannot go wrong with a visit to Otis.....Get there early as after work most evenings it can get crowded, but you will never be disappointed!
Otis is my new favorite night spot.
BUT ONLY UNDER THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:
_Its the second Friday of the month, when "STEP" is happening
_Vinroc is spinning
_Ample amounts of clear liquor such as vodka or soju is running through my system
It honestly makes for a great combination.
[This place is tiny!]

I work upstairs from Otis and their newest drink is named after my company, and Mike is an awesome bartender and always says Hi in the elevator, but all that aside, this place is awesome. it's chill, it's a great place to hang out with a new friend, it's a fabulous place to meet up, the cocktails are usually good, the music is just loud enough to muffle the conversation the guys next to you are having but not too loud to have to yell to the person you're trying to have a conversation with.
I love Otis - but two questions:
1. What's with the flatscreen with sports on all the time? that's not a cool change.
2. What's with you guys closing early last night? That was messed up.
Otis is a warm and comfy space to go with a friends after work or a pre drink with a date. The low key bar has 2 levels with a capacity of about 100 to 120 people in the touristy union square location on Maiden lane. They have good DJ's through out the week from Hip Hop to House music and the space is great for a private party.
The bathrooms are clean and the bartenders aren't so bad. They made some changes on the decor over the years, but its still pretty tasteful. The sound system needs work, but that's about it. I usually make it out to happy hour on Wednesday for my friend DJ Sergio's night. If you like spaced out disco, italo, or boogie check out his happy hour
I came here for an ad:tech party. There really isn't much to say except the decor is lovely and the drinks are good abut the prices are retarded. I guess that is what I should expect at a FiDi/Union Square bar but really, $11 for a vodka collins? With well vodka?
I suppose if I were to come here again (or go to any FiDi bar that sounds like it could be pretentious for that matter) I'll make sure I dress to impress. But then again I could just back out and go to my local bar where the dressiest I need to be is have a decent pair of jeans and a newsy hat.

A co-worker found a flier for this place--it has $2 drink specials for 2 separate hours on Tuesday. Cool...and it's close to work.
A week ahead, we planned to go to this place, and it couldn't have been a better day for a martini.
After finding this place (look for the heavy wooden doors), I was very cool. It's decked out gorgeously like The Peacock in Austin. White leather plush seating, a dim, but wonderful decor, good bartenders, and a laid back crowd. Luckily, this place wasn't crowded, but comfortable. I can't stand sardine-packed bars, especially after work. This place was perfect. The music was good until right when I was leaving when it went from a lounge groove music to some harder hip-hop. Ugh... that was the only inappropriate part of the experience, but I was walking out the door anyway. Let me clear one thing up--hip hop is fine, but it just doesn't fit this laid-back and posh place. It felt just wrong for the space. Save it for a dance club.
Anyway, I will be back. I had a great time, the drinks were right-on, if not a little expensive.

Stopped by for a pals shindig and fell in love with the space. I'd love to see a band like Rilo Kiley play here...or have a small scale art show in the space followed by a private party for San Francisco's finest? I cannot attest to the prices of drinks as I didn't pay for any, but the space alone is worth raving about. Here's a thought, instead of going to a club on your next birthday, rent out Otis and have the bday of a lifetime. I know I will.

10 minutes was all I needed to decide that this place is not as cool as it's semi-secret alleyway entrance might lead you to believe it is. Picture this: 4 cute girls dressed up for a night on the town. We're laughing, having a good time, strolling through Union Square, giddy with excitement that it's Friday and we are going to check out a new bar. We walk in with a whoosh of energy and .... ::crickets::. or actually more like the noise a record plays when it's scratched to a halting stop. The approx. 3 people who were there, including the bartender, looked up, frowned, and looked back down. It was DEAD at 11pm on a Friday night. We tried to make the best of it but the place absolutely killed our energy and the smiles we had on our faces.
What I could make of the decor in the too-dim lighting was very cool, and the upstairs seating area was nice, but the place reeked of pot and getting a drink at the bar even though we were the only ones ordering took way too long.
I *will* try it again (because I'll try anything twice and I've been told I must have gone on a randomly bad night) but in all honesty, I already went through my drink-in-the-darkness in a pot-filled room where everyone chills in silence to some trippy music during my hippie phase in college.

I remember when Otis opened I thought it must be uber-cool since it was billed as being all exclusive and shizz. Fast forward three years and Otis looks like it's been through a battle or two. Wallpaper's coming off, graffiti in the bathrooms, dirty carpet. I think the pretense of exclusivity is gone.
I've only been in here for Happy Hour, which is an undeniably fantastic deal. Their sangria is pretty good and it's only $5.
The crowd-size is doable. I can imagine it's hell on a weekend night, packed to the gils with annoying pretentious people.

I can't say that I'm a huge fan of Otis...but then again, I went here on a weeknight and maybe I wasn't in the best mood for the vibe that Otis was giving. The music was very loud and it very hard to have a conversation with the person sitting across from me, which is kind of the opposite of what I was expecting from this place. I mean the common descriptions of this place that I've heard or read include the words "nook", "intimate", "private", "secluded", "exclusive", I was expecting something a little sexier and quieter. However, the decor and hanging art was nice, the cocktails were stiff and tasty, and the bartenders had a sense of humor. I guess I'll try this place again when I'm in the mood for something a little more club-like. Maybe I'm getting old? It happens.

Avoid at all costs.
Major problems with staff and owner here - total lack of class and do I dare say completely unethical people?! Yes, I did - I said it. This is my experience with them and I am sticking to it!
What has always turned me off about this place to start with is the level of 'exclusivity.' I understand having standards but in all reality this place at the very least needs to clean their bathrooms regularly if they are going to be consistent with promoting an exclusive 'members only' clause.
Secondly, the owner and his security staff are the most lame, unethical, condescending, scam-artists, downright foul restaurant people that I have ever encountered while living in San Francisco. Needless to say, buyer beware before choosing to work with them for a private event.
You may have a good experience here but trust me when I say that if you don't - the attitude is almost laughable in the way of compromise. It's almost as if they feel some form of religious entitlement to screw you over.
In the meantime, I would recommend saving your good times for those who deserve your pleasant company AND fair patronage.

Dripping with swank...I felt I could slut it up and get away with it...I was dressed to the nines! I was here for a friends event which meant open bar and strangers galore...I was ready for anything!
Instead I drank way too much and ended up going home alone and hugging the toilet all night!
The place is uber-hip although not as sexy as, hrmm, Harlot. The bartender was unsure what a Skinny Cuban was (my new favorite drink) I gave up Tom Collins' for lent! Unfortunately I had way too many Skinny Cubans that night. The cocktail waitress was so sweet and a little too on top of the drinks; she was right there as soon as your glass was empty to get you a new one. That's probably why my night ended the way it did.
I'm anxious to return except this time I'm limiting my drinks to TWO skinny Cubans and hopefully I'll go home with one meaty Latin! ;)

I love Otis.
I think part of my love for Otis may even stem from all of the initial buzz of rumors which surround it.
All of the past articles that used to discuss the "exclusive" aspects of Otis got me and I guess there's a sliver of the Studio 54 diva inside of me - because it made me want to go. (I think the exclusive part of Otis may have changed since...)
My first experience with Otis was actually a small Yelp event that we hosted here. I loved the interior right away. The charm of the cozy upstairs is unmistakable. The interior is different from anything else in San Francisco. The reindeer lights like Kirst S points out are intriguing and the peacock above the bar, cast with just the right light, is nothing short of regal.
My favorite part of Otis is the crowd on a good night. Everyone seems to have a unique style, and story. Some of them local bar owners, artists etc. It all seems very New York. Hip. Chic.
Every time that I've been, I've found the bar staff to be attentive, and the music to be happening. There's been a number of times that I've stopped by and found the place to be pretty empty, but I'm sure later on in the night it must fill up very quickly - especially considering it's size.
If you haven't yet checked out Otis - go, but you may want to consider:
1.)stopping by on the earlier side to grab some seating room
2.) Coming a little buzzed, since drinks can get pricey.
3.) Getting out your hoop earrings (cause hoop earrings just rock) or rummaging through your clothes for a styish hat.
4.)Making sure there is not a closed event beforehand.

came for happy hour last night, and it was alright. they had a dj and live drumming after happy hour, which was cool, but there was absolutely no one there.
Of course this place is great because the owner is great. I don't believe that everything driven by passion is always great. But, I do believe that passion, endless energy, devotion, and the ability to always CREATE and learn from mistakes gets you the attention you deserve and after a few years Otis deserves it. After all "it ain't easy being a one man show"!
Obviously if you read all the reviews you will have mixed feelings yourself and that is why yelping is a starting point...the ending point is seeing for yourself what makes or breaks a spot.
Come to Otis with a great attitude and great people...especially at happy hour...and you'll find that this is truly a great place.
Exclusive has 14 (maybe more) definitions and if you really feel the need to use this word...you should be a little more explanatory. Here's a few, pick which one suits you best:
1. not admitting of something else; incompatible: mutually exclusive plans of action.
2. omitting from consideration or account (often fol. by of): a profit of ten percent, exclusive of taxes.
3. limited to the object or objects designated: exclusive attention to business.
4. shutting out all others from a part or share: an exclusive right to film the novel.
5. fashionable; stylish: to patronize only the most exclusive designers.
6. charging comparatively high prices; expensive: exclusive shops.
7. noting that in which no others have a share: exclusive information.
8. single or sole: the exclusive means of communication between two places.
9. disposed to resist the admission of outsiders to association, intimacy, etc.: an exclusive circle of intimate friends.
10. admitting only members of a socially restricted or very carefully selected group: an exclusive club.
11. excluding or tending to exclude, as from use or possession: exclusive laws.

Okay, I pretty much blacklisted this place when it first opened because it was supposed to be "members only" (oh no, another one of the many places trying to be "exclusive" opening in sf, but just end up being filled with a bunch of lame yupsters). So, needless to say, I didn't go. Recently, a good friend of mine started up a little happy hour thing on Wednesday here, so I finally gave in and dropped by, mostly to support her. It is actually a pretty cozy bar. I like cozy bars. We all decided to go there last night for birthday drinks for a friend. Basically, we took the place over, and we had a great time. The drinks were flowing and tasty, and someone even ordered one of their pizzas, which was surprisingly good. All in all, a good after work bar, good place to unwind. Two thumbs up.
Oops, forgot to add that the reason for the 1 star off, was the super stopped up toilet. Why is it so difficult for bar staff to keep their toilets working?

This could be one of my new favorite spots downtown, hands down.
The intimate and secluded setting makes it a really fun little place to go with a group and mingle. I was here because my friend Nick threw a party, and he did a fantastic job picking this as the location. I was blown away by the decor, I don't know what it was, but it just struck a chord with me. Might have been the red walls with the white coral in the shadow boxes...Hmmm that sounds familiar....
The drinks were pricey, yes, but what do you expect these days; it wasn't the most I've had to shell out. The upstairs is really small, but cozy. It was great for chatting with old friends and there was plenty of seating to go around. All in all, I would definitely come back here, maybe throw my own party while I'm at it.
Love the location, and I can totally see how this would be (or could have been) a members only club at some point.

I guess it's because of the intimate setting, the smokey yet soft ambiance and more importantly, the great-looking females that come thru LOOKING VERY VERY SEXY...yeyah! All in all, I never get tired of coming here which is why I frequent this establishment on a savory-type- level! Maybe I'll see some of you SEXY SEXY LADIES there sometime...cheers!

Happened upon this bar one lovely weekday night. It is a quite strikingly beautiful space, to me at least. I love how it's decorated, the layout, the bar itself. It was not too crowded, which I love, because you can actually talk to the people/person you came with. Saw some folks who looked like they came from work, basically it was a mellow scene. Sophisticated bar and crowd. Can't wait to check it out on a weekend.

Came here last night and was instantly impressed by the design and decor. The reindeer lights along the entranceway have, according to my date, won several design awards. They sure caught my eye, but for better or for worse I still haven't decided... the rest of the place seems centered around feather (peacock, specifically) patterns. A huge peacock even rests atop the bar space.
Love the low lighting, dark walls, white couches, and small, intimate size. My date recognized a few regulars and there were some pretty damn fabulous people there. Lots of fashion-forward, designer and artist types.
Good, clean gin and tonic. Had a few glasses of red wine as well, but it still seemed a little young and bitter. Whatever; it did the job and I was buzzing real good. They also have my new favorite shot: Fernet! And Damon gave us a ginger ale chaser which was nice.
Upstairs room is sort of neat, with some tables and more seating, as well as a dj booth. GREAT WALLPAPER. You can sort of peek over the wall of this upper loft space from above (or see in from below) . I liked people watching from the bar, even if just the tops of their dancing, bobbing heads. haha
Otis is definitely a cozy place with good people, and a beautiful setting I would return to any night.

Once rumored to be a "members only" establishment I have never seen evidence of this in my time. In fact, I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone at the door of this place...checking for membership or IDs of any kind for that matter.
Love the little alley location. The place is nearly unnoticeable at night. Great lounge atmosphere, very relaxed with a DJ spinning some tunes later in the evening. Upstairs area has some serious patterned textile action from the floors to the wallpaper.
Overall, a very cozy little place and it doesn't hurt that it is a few blocks from mi casa.
One warning, in case your vision is too blurry to catch the sign, the bathroom door does not lock very well. Great for impromptu meetings.......hello there.

I like the location, walking down the small quiet ally has a sexy appeal. The door was propped open when we arrived, so the main bar area was pretty chilly. We went upstairs to find a warmer spot, but a large group took up most of the seating. The decor was sleek downstairs but felt like an old upholstered living room upstairs. The peacock above the bar had seen better days, but overall the space felt clean.
I am a big fan of small bars, so I might try it again another night at a later hour.
Otis has been one of my favorite sneaky spots in Sf for the past couple years. My friend had her bday party at Otis utilizing both the upstairs mezzanine and the downstairs, white leather swank couches. The bartenders pour heavy and are personable, a plus compared to places like Vessel, which is around the corner who's bartenders are complete snobs. I would recommend Otis on any night to check out the diverse musical sounds and the ever-changing art hanging inside the peacock feather embellished walls. This place is discrete, classy but not shi shi.

I went to my mom's office party here. I had heard it was a sleek, sexy lounge.
So I wore my sleekest, sexiest teacher outfit that is still wholesome and professional enough for school. I had a number of students ask if I was going on a date. It took me an hour and a half to drive here from Pinole on a Friday night, so perhaps I didn't come in with the perkiest mindset. I am jaded at 23, and was surrounded by bubbly PR twenty-somethings who were sexy and sleek effortlessly. I was jealous, to say the least.
But enough excuses. This place just isn't that great.
It would be an excellent secret little alcove for making out and whatnot, but too many people in too small of a space ruin the ambiance. The irony in all of this is that the most spacious place in the joint is the unisex bathroom.
The bartenders were amiable folk, but the lemon drops had no hint of sweetness and no real lemon flavor. We wound up sending them back and were more impressed with the re-do. Snacks, which include paninis and open-faced Swiss broccoli rabe covered crackers, were good but not memorable.
This might be a nice place to go for happy hour with colleagues if it's a small group, but otherwise there are far better lounges in the city.

I love bars without signs above the door. A good 3rd date place. Drinks are a little pricey but tasty. Great Palomas. Good Sangria. My favorite was the Blood Orange Margarita.
They have and upstairs with tables. That is a good spot to hang out with a hand full of friends. The stained glass windows are a high point. They have music playing but you don't have to yell to be heard across the table.
Its a little bit posh for my taste, but a good time. Kind of artsy (white tiger print, red ceilings, art that's so bad its good) but not a total artistic fart like some similar places. Like I said the drinks are a little bit pricey and small, but you are paying for the peacock over the bar and the buffalo fur armchairs.
Oh yeah and the waitress and bar tender were nice.

Could the bartenders be SLOWER? Really... is it in the realm of what is physically possible? Because frankly, I doubt it. That being said we arrived drunk so by the time the champagne arrived we'd lost track of time, probably even where we had our watches.
My advice: Avoid the place. Not worth the time, energy, or effort. The lounge upstairs is carpeted plywood and NOT comfortable.
Otis is such a cute place; my friend had his 30th birthday party and rented it out for a portion of the night. I was surprised that they didn't monitor the door to find out if people were on lists (at least early in the night), and I think the space was over capacity. I'm not sure what the optimal number of people is for Otis but it's not many. The space upstairs is nice and cozy but without a bar, it's not a particularly appealing place for people to sit. The downstairs is nice but there isn't much room between the bar and the couch/tables area which makes it challenging to navigate, especially since you have to pass through that area to get to the restroom. The couple of times I've been to Otis, the music has been good as were the drinks (although a bit slow). A good place if you're planning a party!

I was there with a bunch of people for happy hour. It is a pretty nice place. There is even a DJ upstair later in the evening. I like the decor and it is not so dark that I have problem walking about. I also enjoy those little pulled pork baby burger. They are really good, or maybe I drank enough that food just tasted good to me.
I think this was the place I went to a couple of week before. It's not that bad. The place was somewhat empty although there were people there. I guess a Wednesday night will do that. The DJ was playing some good, loud, danceable music. Even some new Bay Area rap hits that seemed to get those wearing a Giants jacking "going" and generally good hip-hop/rap mix in general. The drinks were alright. Not to my liking, but nothing too bad. There is an upstairs area with tables and stuff where you can sit down and chat or whatever and that's were the DJ is playing from also. I'm not sure how much dancing you could do though if it gets crowded. It's not that bad though when I went.
I would've never known there was a lounge hidden in this area because it just looks like a fancy alleyway during the daytime.

I think this is a private little club, so I'm not sure if everyone is able to check it out, but regardless here is the scoop:
Super sexy sleek and cozy. Nicely decorated with lots of details on the glossy dark red walls, including a peacock feather theme. Everything else though I remember as being unique and sexy, I can't remember what it was, probably because of the focus on the company I was with and the buzz I had.
Anyway the crowd here is super friendly and hot and fashionable, and the vibe is high energy and fun. People look like they are at a super high end club, but you don't get that packed like sardines feeling, since its a tiny place. Upstairs is quieter and more intimate, but doesn't have a bar so you have to run back down for a drink, which only gives you another reason to enjoy the scenery around you!
I love this place, I think I've found my new favorite lounge.

After overcoming a mild case of clausterphobia at Barney's grand opening, my girlfriend and I headed over to Otis to have a private little lunch in their upstairs room. Neither of us were that hungry so we decided to share one of their flatbread pizzas and have some beers. In the middle of our conversation, we smelled something burning. Minutes later, our spacey but kind server came up and brought us another round of beers on the house and apologized for the wait. We asked him if the burnt smell was from our pizza. He said no, but we weren't entirely convinced. A few more minutes passed, and our pizza arrived with edges slightly burned. Hmm... coincidence?
The pizza was tasty, but nothing spectacular. Fellow diners were having panini sandwiches which looked good, so I might go back to try them out.
It is a nice little hidden spot to have some privacy during lunch. I wouldn't be surprised if people came to have secret rendezvous here.

it's a cozy bar but the two levels makes it feel not tooooo crapped feeling. we all threw our coats and bags upstairs and took the party downstairs.
the bartenders were attentive and we kept them plenty busy. i'd give it another star if the place was a touch bigger. though the music was groovin' and we danced just where we were standing like it was any 'ol night club.

Tucked away in shi shi Maiden Lane, this bar is adorable! You heard me right... an adorable bar! Otis is teeny but it doesn't feel cramped. The bartenders are friendly and attentive, and don't leave you wondering if you actually have alcohol in your drink. The upstairs area is good for lounging or dancing (and also where the DJ is hidden - but don't worry, he won't take your requests, so don't ask!) 2 for 1 drink specials on Wednesday nights. Oh, Otis you sly little devil! You are so small and tucked away it has taken me a few weeks to even figure out your name.
I was taken here on a first date, and I must say I was impressed. I just had some wine which obvs isn't hard to mess up. But for some reason I really liked the bartender. He was just the right mix of cool cat and nice dude.
So, the date and I sat downstairs and chatted- the ambience was quite romantical- maybe I might have had to kiss him back when he kissed me... Anyway!
Fun times at Otis, except for the one bathroom door that doesn't lock- I totes walked in on a guy! Awkward!
Make shift lunch place so you eat upstairs in the lounge area on Ikea patio furniture. Not very comfortable but I get a kick out of eating lunch at Otis.
The menu says pizza, I ordered pizza, and I expected pizza. Instead I got a crispy baked cracker with sun-dried tomatoes and cheese on top. I would be mad, but this stranger cracker thing was not bad.
