This is such a treat.
It's a must go while in Seattle as a tourist or for a pleasant day in parks and appreciating our city. SAM right by it and Broadway and 15th E right nearby.
Lots to see with nature and then go eat a a lovely restaurant.
That hike up the stairs was fun! So was the hike down! Very narrow stairs though, so hard for people who have walking problems.
Upstairs, the view was nice. Aside from the grates, you got a pretty decent view of Seattle and Volunteer Park.
The historical information was interesting. I didn't know that Olmstead designed the park system; they also designed the Emerald Necklace in Boston. Enjoyed finding out why there were so many parks in Seattle.
I used to use this tower as my own personal gym with a view. Four rounds up the tower, and down the tower...makes for a big huffing good time. Kissing tourists at the top might think your odd...but who cares what they think anyway.
Word to the wise: don't attempt this when it is raining out, one slip and your dead. Also if your female, and its near dark I would be extra cautious...you don't know what sort of bush bunny, addict, or common bum is lurching in the shadows.

Oh, my lungs/quads. While the hike up the 108 steps literally took my breath away, it was worth it for the breath-taking-away view from the top of the tower. You have a completely panoramic view of the city, and don't have to pay for it (monetarily speaking)!
bars ruin the view! oh well, it's free to climb so might as well do it. The most you lose is some breath
A cool view! There was snow on the ground when I went, and that was pretty cool to see from above. There are really nice old houses in the area, which I also quite enjoy looking at.

the water tower to the space needle as vivace to starbucks.
oh, and it's free.
here is how to make an adventure out of it, in 12 easy steps:
1. bring a friend or a visitor (tell them they can see the space needle later, with other tourists).
2. park someplace else, walk towards the park. get lost. find your way. repeat.
3. when right outside, say, "oh man, what is this?!? can we get in?"
4. find the entrance.
5. climb up the circular-ish staircase. run. run out of breath. rest. repeat.
6. when on top say "holy spaghetti!!"
7. enjoy the awesome views.
8. take terrible pictures
9. read the exhibits on the wall ("oh, wait, so back in 1901... the park commissioner... so is that why seattle is such a sweet city now?!").
10. inhale the fresh air.
11. take the stairs back.
12. say: "dude, that was sooo cool."

Inspiring for its views, fascinating for all the stuff up at the top about the Olmsteds and how they created seattle's park systems.
Also apparently not that well known; I've been to volunteer park a few times, but never really understood what that big red tower was.
A must-visit. Bring your out-of-town friends.

A fun place to climb and get a look at the area around you. A nice view of downtown can be had from here too.

My mom made me climb it once... and I'm glad she did - beautiful view!
Better Views than the Space Needle and Free!
This is where I prefer to take out-of-towners instead of the Space Needle. It's not very well known, you get you exercise (99steps up), it's got a spectacular view and....it's FREE! You can't miss it from inside Volunteer Park. With eight windows, you get a 360 view. It's pretty awesome on a clear day.

Great view
When I was young my job was to secure this tower so I had to climb to the top to make sure no one was upstairs but I loved the view
