So happy that Vital Mind & Body is in my neighborhood!
Melissa is the BEST. She's thorough, knowledgeable and is the perfect person to guide through your first colonic or spa session at Vital. She takes the time to explain the process and answer questions to make you feel completely relaxed and able to get the most from your treatment. I highly recommend a visit to see what all the talk is about.
And, I can't say enough wonderful things about Michael as a massage therapist. He's extremely strong and very intuitive about what he needs to do to make the most of your time with him. I always look forward to getting on his table after a rough week or a stressful business trip.
Check out Vital if you haven't. Well worth stopping by!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Renee gave me the best massage I've ever received.
4 hours later and I'm still floating on cloud nine from how wonderful the experience was.
As someone who has had quite a few massages, I was expecting a standard, run of the mill sweedish massage. Instead I found someone who could work out the knots in my back, relieve every pressure point, and left me so relaxed that I left Vital grinning ear to ear.
In fact---I was so relaxed that I forgot to leave a tip the last time I was there so I owe Renee extra.
The only downside of Vital is that it is a little pricey at $95 a session. -

Rennee is AMAZING. I went to Vital on a groupon whim after having severe back and neck pain for several days. For $50, I didn't really expect much and was just hoping for a little relief. I have had massages before and this was by far the BEST massage I've ever received. She used very different techniques to get right to the point of pain in every area of my body that hurt. Even though massages are normally $95/hr I will definitely be back again. I can't imagine going to anyone else after my experience with Renee!

Scheduling a massage for the day after running a half marathon? BEST IDEA EVER!
I found Vital Mind & Body Therapies on Yelp by searching for massages in the Old Town Alexandria area, and I was persuaded to come here by the excellent reviews.
I booked with Kristen, and when I called I explained what I was looking for (a sports massage/deep tissue massage). What impressed me most is that she didn't even offer herself up first to book with, she recommended another practitioner. I liked this about her, so I booked with her, and let me tell you, that was a GREAT decision.
I've only had a few massages in my past, but this was by far the best. She not only concentrated on the areas that were sore from my race, but also stretched me out and worked out some kinds in my neck which were work related. I cannot tell you how much better I felt coming out of this massage then when I went in, and I was not sore the next day in the least bit! She definitely was essential in my recovery from my race!
I would absolutely recommend that any runners in the area consider booking with Kristen for a sports massage/deep tissue massage after a long distance race. Trust me, you will NOT regret it! Compared to other spas/massage therapy places in Old Town, the price is very reasonable. I WILL be back! -

I saw Melissa for my first colonic today.
The room is very private and sanitary.
At first, I was uncomfortable with the idea of having a tube placed up my butt, however it is not at all what I expected- its done by you and is pretty easy given the way its done and the angle etc.
I had all sorts of questions for Melissa, How far does that tube go? My waste goes where?! She was very easy to talk to about and open to my questions. the first ten minutes were kinda weird.. getting used to the water, the next hardest step was knowing that you 'release' into this tiny tube, so you're like will my poop fit through this tube?!!! Dont worry it will!
It was kinda fascinating/gross at the same time to see what came out of my large intenstine (open system)
I'm going mainly to assist in my parasite cleansing as well as skin issues. It was $95 for one.Melissa was very accessible by email as well as phone.
Also, Vital b/c does not charge you to meet with yet another doctor for this colonic unlike most places that I called around too in Springfield and Vienna. -

I saw Melissa for colon hydrotherapy for a number of times over the past couple of years and she is wonderful. I have brought family and friends because of her professionalism, care and knowledge of the services she provides. Thank you, Melissa. The only thing that stops me from coming back is the price...$90 is a lot for me when insurance is not an option. But I will try to make it a more regular occurrence. What a wonderful location, simple and beautiful facility and excellent customer service.

I don't know much about massages other than does it feel good and am I better than I was before I had one. I came here after reading all the amazing reviews. The place is easy to find and it has available parking. I got a deep tissue session from Kristin and it was second to none. She listen to my body and applied the right amount of pressure to those parts talking back to her. Her stretching techniques felt great on my legs and hips. I will come back for sure!

I've seen a few of the massage therapists here, and would like to share my experiences so far. I would recommend Paula if you want a relaxing massage that still manages to work out your tight muscles. She has a really calming demeanor. Louisa's massage seemed very nurturing and I felt grounded and deeply relaxed afterwards. Michael's massages are fantastic if you need to tackle a problem area or like really deep work. His massages are intense (you have to Breathe like you've never Breathed before), but I was able to turn my head without pain after a after having a stiff neck for days.
Overall, I've had a wonderful experience there! -

After a bit of trepidation, I called Melissa at Vital and scheduled my very first colonic. (I recently switched to a raw/vegan diet and was interested in unloading some "debris"... Out with the old, in with the new!)
Melissa is extremely knowledgeable about a lot of nutritional and holistic therapies, which was very comforting. She is easy to talk to and answered all my questions. She is also great at giving you privacy, but also making sure you feel like she's there for support too.
It's a little tricky getting settled into a good position, but once you're used to the flow of things - it's not bad.
I experienced some minor cramping in my intestine, which is normal as it fills up with water, but that didn't last long at all. You also get to see all the junk that comes out, which is one of the gruesome curiosities... While it's nasty to look at - it's comforting to know that all that stuff is no longer residing on the inside!
Once the flushing was done and I was back in my clothes, Melissa sat down to chat with me and answer any other questions. She recommended a great pro-biotic and also recommended I look into doing a liver/gall bladder cleanse in the near future, which I am currently researching.
As I was walking out, I noticed I must have formerly been harboring a couple of dumbbells in my midsection. The difference was immediately apparent. You definitely notice how free and clear you feel afterward.
I highly recommend Melissa. She totally put me at ease during what could have been a completely awkward situation.
I will definitely be going back and I strongly recommend this to others who are interested in some cleansing and detoxifying. -

Vital Mind and Body can be considered a destination spot for wellness and healing. The sheer number and variety of practitioners available represent an incredible array of choices for someone who is searching for an alternative solution to a variety of health and wellness issues. As a customer who pre-dates the practice, I can attest to the strong, family-like relationships amongst the staff. The simple fact that the individual practitioners are willing to refer people to the other practitioners at Vital speaks volumes for the quality of service provided by all of the people here.
Specifically, I can highly recommend the strong hands (and sometimes elbows) of the founder of Vital, Sara VanderGoot. Sara delivers not only the best deep tissue massage I have experienced, but she is the driving force behind the nurturing atmosphere and healing nature of Vital. Over the last four years, Sara has taken good care of both body and spirit.
One final note -- many of the services provided by Vital are covered by your medical Flexible Spending Account. You should check your provider for specifics, but I am able to get money back from my FSA for massages with a doctor's note. After a short explanation of the procedures at Vital, my primary care physician provided a note. Whether you are looking for a wide array of choices or a specific service, it would be hard to make a bad choice from the broad menu provided by Vital. -

Paula Goldman is fantastic. Highly recommended. She's gotten me through a sprained ankle, a bruised tail bone, pinched nerves, body aches and stress. She loosens me up, opens me up, and helps me relax.

I have been going to Paula for massage even before she worked out of Vital. After a session one day she said that the thing she loved the most about massage is how you are so present in the moment. It was weird because I had earlier thought that one of the things that makes her so brilliant at it is that she is so present and can respond to the resistance and responses from you body so well. I don't think everyone is like that I think its a sign of someone that is doing something they were meant to do. I am still trying to find mine :) Vital also has other types of therapists/aestetitions like facialists, chiropractors working from their site.
