I love this zoo. Even though they don't have the exotics the D.C. Zoo has (Pandas and such) it is a much nicer environment. You get closer to the animals, don't have to fight busloads of tourists and can relax and not be jostled and shoved by the person behind you. The animals are well taken care of and seem genuinely happy. The enclosures are surprisingly large for such a small zoo! I love the petting area with the goats - which is always a favorite of kids - and the price you just can't beat.

Sure the D.C. zoo is free, but good luck getting there on the metro, walking through the crowds and getting nothing more than a peek of a tiger's rump through a wall of heads and camcorders.

Give me the Virginia Zoo any day. :)

I just didn't like it.  I didn't like the fact that I was looking at the Elephants and, without even *trying* I could see the neighborhood surrounding the zoo... the beaten up cars, the overgrown yards, the chain-link fence. I felt like I was in project X.

Seriously, go to D.C.'s zoo.

This place is just a stuck in the middle of urban sprawl and, frankly, I was depressed when I left.

The Virginia Zoo is fabulous.  I know one reviewer mentioned seeing the neighborhood and houses by the elephants, but be real!  The place just expanded, and the bamboo is still growing.  It can only grow so fast.  Soon, you will see nothing but a wall of bamboo!

The zoo is beautifully landscaped, with so many delightful and unexpected exhibits.  It is a great way to spend the day.

The prices are very reasonable.  They also have annual memberships which are a great bargain.  Many other zoos will accept Norfolk's Virgina Zoo's membership cards.  I often go to the zoo in Louisville KY or the one in North Carolina.  What a bargain!

We are so lucky that our children have such a lovely zoo, where they can see animals in natural-looking habitats.

The zoo was a pleasant surprise!

We saw lots of interesting animals and the landscaping is beautiful.  The elephants and giraffes were some of the highlights, and also the prairie dogs!  They also have farm animals you can feed, lions, a zebra, a rhinoceros, some cool birds, and some more exotic types I can't recall the names of.

Be sure to bring water and sunscreen in the summer - it was extremely hot the day we went.  There is also a water area that you can splash in to cool off.

Overall, this zoo was a lot of fun!
