Review from R W.

As a 24yr old, the record store is something of legend. With Christmas coming up, I decided that I would surprise my parents by filling in their vinyl collection for the past 30yrs. Without a clue, I first went to the internet. Amazon was convenient and inexpensive. Then I remembered that Amoeba in SF was still around and went exploring. Upon expanding my Google Maps search, I discovered Vinyl Solution Records just minutes from my office. Rushing over after work, I became entranced in the collection of records. Grabbing as many $2.99 vintage records that I appreciated and knew my parents would also. The whole experience was great and I look forward to investing more time and money into it.

I wish that I lived closer to Vinyl Solution, because it would earn a weekly visit just to see what's new. It has a very good selection of used vinyl, all at reasonable prices, with lots new every time I stop by. The CD selection is smaller, but generally well priced, so I always find something from both formats. They also have movies, 45s, bootlegs, and all sorts of stuff in this good-sized store but I'll have to admit I rarely have time to peruse everything. Suffice to say that I have found dozens of titles on my wish list here plus quite a few releases that I had never seen anywhere before. If you ever find yourself bemoaning the fate of the record store, stop whining and visit Vinyl Solution. I'll be amazed if you don't find something that you want or something that you didn't even know you wanted.

I've been coming here for my vinyl fix since I was a teenager. I remember when Tommy first took over the store mid-80's, and he's always run one of the most amazing independent record stores around. The Vinyl Solution has always been a friendly place for music lovers to get their geek on. It's not pretentious, just full of people who respect and love music.
They have a big selection of used as well as new music, and it's always a treat to troll the used bins and find a cool gem at a bargain price.
In my travels over the past 25 years I've visited countless independent record stores all across the country. The Vinyl Solution is still one of my favorites. It ranks up there with the best of 'em! -
Review from Emily M.
I'm amazed this place still survives when no other independent record stores can! Walking in here is like walking back into the 80s; I doubt it's changed much since it opened. Even when I used to come here back in the mid-90s in high school it was dated. Not that I think this is a bad thing.
In high school I bought a lot of my old vinyl here - I remember picking up a bunch of Simon and Garfunkel and John Lennon. I also remember buying the first U2 single here (U2-3) which is rare, for only something like $10. I had my mom buy The Velvet Underground box set for me here when I turned 17. That was a turning point in my young life!
I've been in sporadically over the last 10 years since moving back from college, usually buying used CDs. I should probably go in and drop some dough to support a local business. It's been a while. -

It's crazy how things come full circle. Think of all theifferent audio formats that have come and gone and yet vinyl somehow has stood the test of time. I guess it's back en vogue again. When you see the cd for $10 and the vinyl version for $19.99, you gotta wonder. However this place is cool for keeping the nostalgia and format alive. Lots of crazy weird stuff you'd never find anywhere else plus modern stuff being put out on vinyl for collectors.

I'm a wannabe audiophile trying to set up my Pioneer PL-50 turntable and Luxman L-480 integrated amp with no clue how to operate a record player.
I brought my turntable to Vinyl Solutions today because it wasn't working. Tommy took a look at it and said it's because the belt was broken; it's been sitting idly for 30 years so it had turned into this sticky, tar-like substance. He cleaned it up with rubbing alcohol and was able to find a suitable replacement belt for me. I'm waiting for him to replace the stylus too. Hoping it won't be too expensive!
A few weeks ago, I bought 25 LPs from the clearance classical section 5 for $1.99. If you go now and you're looking for Debussy, you're out of luck, because I bought them all. Hey Yelpers, please go sell some Satie LPs to Vinyl Solutions?
I can't wait until my turntable is in working order and I can finally listen to all the LPs I bought. :)
-----
The stylus took longer than expected to come in, but the maintenance, parts and labor were $40 just like I was quoted over the phone. I'll definitely be back for more LPs and will bring my turntable here for any repairs in the future. -

Wellll....My previous review somehow vanished. I can't explain why. I thought it was heart-felt, honest, useful and above-all, mild-mannered. This site is not merely for suck-ups so I will continue pursuant to my goal of enlightening others. I mean, when I read some of the fawning one-liners here, I wonder if they are referring to the same store as me?? Very perplexing to say the least.
Anyway, here we go again...I have been visiting this entity (Vinyl Solution) since its inception, when it was much smaller...Remember, bigger isn't always better...
You get the feeling you're being watched the entire time shopping. The selection is so poor, it's depressing. I almost feel guilty when I leave there empty-handed. I said "almost."
To have had the doors open for this many years, I think the owner must've inherited a lot of $$. I never see his 'Happy Face' on and he should work on being more approachable. (Yes, I have interacted with the guy)
The only plus is location. Otherwise, receiving positive written feedback on Ebay will beat any productive visit to this store.
One more thing: Must the clerk transcribe (with pen and paper) every item sold? It is very tedious, indeed.
Some businesses have just run their course. -
Review from Amy J.
If I owned a record store, it'd be something like Vinyl Solution. The owner really is passionate about music - he's like a real life Rob Gordon (from High Fidelity). He was telling my friend and me some stories about the bands he had seen. If I were a teen, I would definitely want to work here and learn about music from him. Prices are pretty reasonable for a mom & pop type shop especially for the used stuff. The new stuff is pretty high but it's expected because there isn't as much inventory as a big box retailer.
Vinyl Solution has a great variety of vinyl, used & some new CD's, tapes, music books, posters, equipment and so much more. Oh yeah, there's also a selection of DVDs and videos as well. If it has to do with music, he probably has it here.
They even clean your vinyl here. This is the peninsula's best kept secret. If you are a music geek, like me, you must stop in here at least once in your life. It's a fun place to browse even if you don't buy anything. Support your local record store.Listed in: It's all about the music

Wow! I didn't think music stores like this existed anymore.
The store is a big, spacious room filled with records, CDs, some DVDs and cassettes, random music store paraphernalia -- even some 8-tracks. It's full without feeling cramped, and there's interesting music playing without blasting.
It is very possible that shopping at a brick & mortar music store is a lost art, but if you still have it then this is the place to do it. You might find a few specific items cheaper online or at a thrift store, but it won't be as much fun. -

CED: Okay store that has a lot of music in vinyls, cassettes, cds, etc. Not so many movies, but i was lucky enough to find a cool dvd set. The deal of buy 2 get 1 free was awesome. Didnt get to look around much, but it was an alright experience. Quick and simple.

This place has it!!! Not only is this place, where you get some really good, classic, vintage and new music, but it's serves more than that. This place sells old VCRs and has one of the biggest collection of posters as well.
The store is 60 % made up with records, you can be surprise how many different kinds of music is there. There is even records for newer set album. I was in shock. Then there are the CD's in the back of the store, where you pit it in the disk player and play it. This place plays really cool background hits. If you enter the cassettes area, you will find a sign that shows very rare CD's or music. A good example would be Nirvana. Closer to the near of the door, you will see new CDs that just got out.
If you don't anything, it's still worth checking if you want to see history. -

This is a great independent store. Tommy is extremely knowledgeable and is a nice guy. They have a good selection of vinyl, Cd's, and imports. The customer device is top notch.
Stop by and check it out. You will be happy you did. -

I'm not going to take too much time on this friendly neighbourhood store. A place like Vinyl Solution must be taken at face value. Its a small store, located on a long street of mom-and-pop shops in San Mateo. The kind of store that you would expect in it's location.
Their jazz and classical vinyl sections resembled the bargain used bins and most Amoeba and Rasputin stores, but seeing as how there are no other stores in a close proximity, this will have to suffice for people living around it.
They do have a CD section, though a small one at that. One rack for jazz and one for classical and both carrying the cutouts from the stores mentioned above.
To put it bluntly, I would probably visit this store a few times a year just to see what is going on. -

Ok, this place is F-N Rad. Always has been. Been coming here since the early 90's. Back then I use to come and buy tapes, then CD's and Vinyl. What strikes me about this place is that you can usually find what you're looking for but what can get you into trouble is the fact that you can fine what you aren't looking for. Yeah, I walked out the other day spending more than I wanted to. But that was my fault. It was for a couple of new sealed vinyl. Although the used stuff is really fairly priced. Also I may add that the quality of the records is pretty high. I've never bought anything that was sub par.
Ok, another thing I dig about this place is the fact that it's such an old school record store, I feel right at home! Also... the stereo system in the store sounds really good. It's an older set up that really does some of there stuff the play justice.
Ok go check it out! It may cater to the audiophile but it also caters to people who seek what they are looking for.
BTW, one can still buy tapes and the CD selection is not to shabby. But the Vinyl rules their inventory. -

I can't remember the last time I bought a CD. A friend gave me his old "iPOD" so I packed away the sony walkman and my eight track player and decided to give it a try.
Now, I'm buying some CD's from my youth and loading up my iTunes. Vinyl Solutions has a decent selection of music and if they don't have it, Tommy will order it. He's really old school, knows alot about music and is a great guy.
Prices are pretty reasonable, service is great and they have an amazing selection of Vinyl. Personally, I like to support the 'mom and pop' stores and prefer to get my music here rather than download them or go to Best Buy. -
Review from Walter P.
I'm so bad when I find a used vinyl and CD shop. I can't help it. First I start with the clearance bins. Second I'm lugging about 30+ vinyl records and CD's around the shop. Third I'm realizing that the longer I keep looking around, the more my arms and debit card are screaming... "STOP ALREADY!"
Prices: Kind of expensive compared to Rasputin's
Sells poster boards from the record companies: Yes
Listening stations for both records and CDs: Yes
Well organized music categories: Yes, except for the clearance bins. You spend most of your time digging around.
Vinyl clearance bins: 99 cents each or 20 records for $9.99.
Sells 45's? Yes. It's always a joy to remember what it was like to put these nostalgic records on a turntable.
Special note: If you're looking for a turntable that connects to your computer (turn your vinyl into MP3s), they sell the Audio Technica turntable for less than $100.00.

Love this place. Cool, friendly people. Tons of records. They have plenty of new vinyl which is always nice. Fair prices on records. For a smaller, local place it rocks. But that's my kind of record store.
Even if they haven't had a record I wanted (which is rare, and they're usually OOP) they've offered guidance as to where to find it, or offered to order it. I've also found plenty of good stuff in the back of the store that had just arrived. The store is not overwhelmingly big so you can browse it all. Good import CD section as well, especially rare Nirvana stuff.
I always wind up spending more than I intend, but I walk out with a five pound bag of stuff. Give this place a visit. -
Review from Ken K.
Amoeba's this is not, but certainly a remarkable relic for vinyl and Beatles fans alike. Why Beatles? They have a section towards the back, and one glass counter dedicated to Beatles themed music memorabilia. Nothing fancy or super high end, but it is a mini shrine in itself.
There's a picture vinyl display on the wall, remember those cool album artwork prints on the vinyl itself from the 80s? They have a few of those there.
Some bootleg CDs and DVDs, some likely are CDRs but at least they carry them for those who are into these things (though I dunno why when you can grab a lot of them free from torrent sites).
You can also buy LP vinyl cardboard mailers here! A rare item if I may say so myself.
Good and modest selection of used new and some import vinyls too.

Out of the three used CD places I hit over the weekend, this place is the most expensive of stores but no scratches on the used CD's so didn't have to do any returns/credits.
Used prices start at $4.95. No multi sale deals like Rasputin in MV and Streetlight in SJ.
Street parking, meters are free on Sunday. -

tommy is still charging like $7.99 to $9.99 for used CD's.
Get real and be thankful they are still making record players cause you would have gone the way of the dodo (er.. tower) if you had to rely upon something other than vinyl...
I dont know how he's kept that place open thru the years. Either he owns the building or has extremely low overhead.
How much are you paying the 5 dudes working there? They must have sold their souls to you long ago...
now that tower and warehouse are gone there is nothing to stop Tommy's empire from taking over the music world. -

No attitude, friendly staff.
I have found clean used vinyl for $3. New and audiophile pressing recording I could never find at Amoeba.

A very good record store that has provided me with some lovely purchases over the past decade. Their strength is the wide range of music paraphernalia that is attractively set up for sale around the spacious store. They have sheet music, turntables, music DVDs, vintage magazines, 45s, cassettes, and other collectible crap like stickers, buttons, and posters. You can spend a cool hour in there just looking at the variety of stuff.
Their weakness is that they really do not stock that many CDs and vinyl. What they do have is meticulously alphabetized for easy searching but their selection is tiny compared to the Bay Area giants.
Their obvious love of music should entice anybody into the store and you will find many things that you will want to buy, but the smallish stock on the floor will frustrate you if you were looking for specific items. -

This place is a very pleasant find. They gave a very good selection of both new and used pop and rock cd's. Too bad it seems they don't have a classical section unless I totally missed it. I gues the real treat is the selection of LP records for those who are still into those (and it does appear they're making a small comeback). Even the cassette selection (for those still into them) seem pretty good.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS PLACE STILL EXISTS!!
I used to hang around here when I was a no good teen after high school. Of course, we had no money and would rarely buy anything but we'd look around alright. Ahh.... good times.
Selection's pretty good and it makes me happy that a place like this has survived through all the shit that's happened to record stores. It really doesn't deserve 5 stars, not nearly as good as Amoeba or anything. But for San Mateo, it kicks ass.

Vinyl Solution is the best.
They have the best selection (so much music + DVDs, VHSs, TV series, posters, etc)., nice employees with a good taste in music, amazing prices (with sales on top of that), they'll order in anything they don't already have for you, they're fine with you going in and looking around without buying anything.

A wonderful local venue for vinyl, cassettes, and CD's. Has a limited selection of records in some regards, has some gems in other regards.
Also sells other music minutia.
Great place. Old school community record store.

They have a super selection of vinyl and CD's, not as great as streetlight but pretty fierce none the less. The store is much bigger than I expected and lit very well so you can really see while you are perusing the stacks.
I would go here more often but that is a 45 minute drive from my house and I just can't get up the energy to poke through a bunch of dusty old records. Maybe I'm getting old but now I just keep sneezing as I flip through the discs. And how many Dan Fogelberg records can I look at? I mean that guy sold a ton of vinyl didn't he?
And I know myself, I would get here around noon and spend all day going from box to box, aisle to aisle, bin to bin. Once I get into a record store, you can't get me out until I have bought so much I can't carry it all out at one time.
PRICES ARE KINDA HIGH HERE. Hate to say it but they are unless you are on the disc hunt because they have a 20 for 9.99 special. That can't be beat anywhere, even at streetlight. -

Great record store!
Excellent selection of used LPs.
They even have new release LPs.
I like their selection of other odds & ends such as stylus cleaners, turntable accessories, used laser disc, 8track tapes, reel to reels, 45s, posters and betamax players.
Every time I've gone inside this place, I end up buying something I didn't expect to find. -

Have you seen the film High Fidelity? I keep wanting to call this place "Chamionship Vinyl" because it reminds me a bit of the record shop in that movie. In fact, the last time I walked in there, they were playing the album Sandinista by The Clash. I kid you not. I expected John Cusack to lope out any moment.
There are so few places like this around anymore; it's refreshing to go into a used "record" store and be able to browse around.
Vinyl Solutions has a good selection of music from all genres. My tweenage daughter was so happy to get a used Gwen Stefani album from this place. (Well at least she has good taste).
You always feel so cool strolling the aisles and scoffing at bad albums or "hmmmm"ing something esoteric, like the an old album by The Durutti Column.
You can listen to a CD before you buy it, which is good, because ya just never know.
The prices are pretty good, and the inventory is constantly getting turned over. It's a nice impulse alternative to ebay or amazon used cds. It's nice that the internet hasn't killed this place and places like it.

Review from bardot c.
Menlo Park, CA
Ahhhh, the smell of dust and vinyl. It's a comforting smell to quell the addiction for those thrift store / record shop junkies in need of fix. And Vinyl Solutions, while not Amoeba in grandeur and scope, has that "smell" firmly entrenched in the racks and racks of used (and some new) cds, tapes, vinyl, dvds, vhs, import singles, and whatever else for the music lover.
This neighborhood record shop is a rarity, and a damn fine one at that. I wasn't expecting big things when I entered the store, such as a diverse selection or new-ish releases. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find the store had a nice, organized layout, it wasn't dirty and cluttered, and the sales associates were NOT snobby!
And their store name is no fluke-they sell all things record related: plastic and paper record sleeves for 12" records AND 45s, as well plastic sleeves for laser discs (for a price waaaay cheaper than Streetlight. They don't even carry the 45 and L.D. sleeves), record adapters, records players, vinyl cleaners (how long have I been searching for that???), dividers, and who knows what else. All for a decent price.
Music-wise, Vinyl Solutions is the place you go as a destination, not with a set list of musics to buy or if you want to sell your used cds. If you're willing to spend a decent amount of time rifling through the racks, then you're set. Other than that, going there to get the newest Nickelback release isn't a good idea (though the may have it used. But why would you be there if you love Nickelback??!!).
As for me, I look for easy listening, lounge, and pop vocals, which usually exists in the cheapie bins. Here, the cheapie records are $0.50 or 5 for a $1!!
Overall, Vinyl Solutions is a great place to spend a Saturday afternoon. Open everyday 11 to 7, check it out and have fun.
P.S. Did I mention I found a lot of Chuck Mangione??? Him and his flugelhorn! On vinyl! -

When I worked on The Peninsula, I'd visit Vinyl Solution once a week to rifle through the New Arrivals section of the used vinyl album bins; it was a nice way to kill a lunch hour. I'd always finish my visit with a quick sprint through the $1.00 vinyl album bin to find some cheesy 60's or 70's album that I would buy simply for the cover art.
Every once in awhile I'd find a used CD, but I really only visited for the easy vinyl fix. I'd often end up having a conversation with the owner since he's old school and *knows* music; his knowledge and awareness of new bands always impressed me.
I still try to visit the place as often as possible; cool that it's still around. -

I agree with Sam C. about the Championship Records-esque feel of Vinyl Solution. I loooove going here! I always stumble across sweeter finds each time I go. Right now they have a huge clearance on LPs and CDs. 10 CDs for $9.99 and I don't know, 5 vinyl records for 2 bucks or something?
Sweet deal. It's cool just to walk around the store too, lots of posters and wall slicks..
The employees are chill and leave you to do your thing. What I love is that you can listen to used CDs before you buy them so you're sure to know that you're not buying crap.
Low prices and mellow feel. Last things I bought were a vinyl record of Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain and a Tahiti 80 CD for 5 bucks.
I guarantee your visit to last more than an hour.. -

Excellent suburban record shop. Sure, for a Bay Area store the vinyl selection ain't huge a la Amoeba, but its respectable and I always seem to find some cool stuff when I go there that makes the drive worthwhile. The prices are consistently fair and they've got a nice sized bin of 50-cent records that always seems to be overflowing. Actually I've found some great stuff in it, so don't pass it by.
Oh yeah, they've got a decent CD selection too, but that's not really what I'm there for so I won't comment, other than that they are stacked so you have to browse by looking at the spine which could get tiring. And I have to give them props for the classic record store vibe, there's all kinds of memorabilia, instruments and other stuff for sale. -
Review from Lance P.
Pacifica, CA
It's too bad this is the only game in town, as far as a walk-in CD/record store goes, now. I used to bounce between this place and the Tower Records at Hillsdale. Once Tower closed, I would frequent this place to order CDs that you couldn't find at retail music/movie stores.
Anyhow, you could order whatever your heart desired at the front counter; they have a big, thick catalog, and they could look up and (attempt to) order a CD. I should have learned my lesson after the first couple of times I did this. I always made a down payment for each CD that I ordered, but I had to wait for an inordinant amount of time for them to come in. It wasn't a hassle for me, so I would check in the store weekly to see if my order came in, and the clerk would always insist that they would call me if it ever came in. So, after that not happening a couple of times, I didn't think much of it and I continued to do business with them.
The second-to-last time, I ordered an "import" CD that cost me $25 + tax, which I later saw somewhere for the normal $13. So, I got screwed on that one. Then on my last order, I made a $10 down payment for 2 CDs. After a couple of months of them telling me that the first distributor was out and they're getting them from another supplier and they're on the way, and they promise they'll call me when they're in, I got fed up and ordered them online for $12 apiece, and got them in 3 days.
I imagine the CDs never came in, and I never got a call either way. I still have the business card which shows my down payment that I never cared to go back for. I doubt they would honor the payment or refund it after a couple years--they don't keep track of the orders that they make, and you have to keep visiting the store to track your own order.
The vinyl selection is ho-hum, and don't expect to find anything special in their new/used CD section. And don't forget: availability is NOT an issue!! Aside from that, the storefront always has tables of VHS tapes and other cheap shit sitting outside. VERY cosmopolitan. -
Review from Elias F.

I really like this place. I've been to a fair amount of record stores now and this place definitely comes close to the top.
Bads first since there aren't that many. Their metal and electronic selections are practically non existant. I have found some metal and electronic stuff here, but it is really rare to see, so don't count on it still being there next time if you don't buy it. Also, I bought a record for priced at 17.99 for 17 flat since the corner was a bit messed up, and then saw the same record in perfect condition for 16 the next time I went. That was lame. I would say that some records are a bit over priced but I haven't tried bargaining with them.
Goods. Their selection of rock is spectacular. You can find a new copy of many rock albums that I haven't seen in other places. In addition, they have used copies and box sets of a ton of bands. They get most of the newly released albums on record and they are the same price as if you were buying it on CD. They have some great rare records that I've never seen anywhere else. They have tons of stuff for storing your records, including cardboard boxes, plastic crates, and once I saw plastic tubs. They also have plastic sleeves, paper sleeves, and plastic dividers for your collection to look a bit neater. The staff is all very friendly. I've had conversations with about all of them, and they will often comment on records you are looking at.
Great place. If you like a friendly neighborhood record store, check this one out. -

This is one of my favorite stores to shop for music as they offer used cd's that are new quality for discount prices with a buy 2 get 1 free ongoing deal. Today I picked up Tribe Called Quest, Cheap Trick and Metallica, all for about 15 bucks.Had a nice conversation with the owner who reflected on a Rolling Stones concert he attended. Friendly, courteous service. A+
