20 reviews for Vino Restaurant and Lounge
From the outside, Vino appears a bit more fancy than comfy. However, the inside feels precisely the opposite. Wood floors and huge TVs around definitely secure the lounge feel.
The personnel was a bit quirky. When our first waiter arrived to offer tap or sparkling water, I asked what beers were on tap. He said he wasn't sure, he'd go check. He returned and said "we don't have any beers on tap". I wasn't really intrigued by the lack of draft beer so much as the nice young man's oblivious nature. He was so polite and nice to us though, it was almost cute.
The pizzas were nothing to rave about, but decent. I had the Chianti, which had a delicious chianti balsamic reduction drizzled through fresh greens topping the pizza. Two noteworthy points though... Although appearing huge, the pizza was thin enough that I finished mine easily and ate three slices of my girlfriend's. Didn't leave feeling full. Also, the prosciutto was put on my pizza after it was already cut into slices. My butter knife and I struggled as we hacked through the perforations.
Had those pizzas been their full price ($14), I would've been disappointed about the portion size. We'll probably head back sometime if we need something different. Otherwise, it's just alright.
Vino is very chic and probably the most "forward" restaurant in NoLibs. My husband and I have been to Vino several times, both solo and with friends. We usually have gone with appetizers and drinks, and we always end up with a hefty bill. In the times we've gone with friends, entrees have been ordered, but we've found that though the meals are great, the portions are lacking.
Definitely a good place if you want to do it up a bit. The wine selection is nice, as is the liquor selection. I wish I could say a bit more about the food....
Portion size, my friends... after sharing an appetizer and eating an entree, you want to leave satisfied. I was not entirely. This and a drink cost me about $40.
I would give it bonus points for the service though. And, there is nothing like outdoor seating at the end of summer/start of Fall. Also, the outdoor events at the Piazza were visible from the restaurant's outdoor seatings. Bonus points for free entertainment with food and drink.
The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because it's in the piazza and that would be against my knowledge of what it means to have the piazza in our neighborhood.
But...having said that, I think that Vino is really phenomenal. I've been there three times.
Once to have cheese and wine on a Saturday afternoon. We ordered a cheese plate, some bruchetta type of dish, and a bottle of rose. It was all delicious.
The second time to just have a glass of wine and read in the early evening.
The third time to have brunch with our brunch club. Brunch was the highlight. $10 brunch!! You can order pizza type breakfast dishes, omelette esque dishes, frittatas, french toast, etc. All priced at $10. Plus they of course have brunch cocktails (which we sadly did not sample). And they could accomodate our group of 10 with no problem.
I think this place is really reasonably priced, has an excellent wine selection, and the service is really friendly.
Also - I've brought my friends dog there twice and we've sat outside with no problem. They even bring a dog bowl with water. Bonus points for sure.
Came here after a yelp event to have some dinner. It was close, and figured why not.
The place is really chic and cool. I like what they have done inside, although I didn't take a picture. They have clean lines, the bar is nice, and the seating arrangement isn't crowded. There is plenty of outside seating. The prices on the menu are very reasonable, ranging from $10 for pizzas (fairly large) up towards $20 for some entrees - good prices for a place that looks like this.
I ordered the vodka linguine and an arugula salad. Now, I cannot say I am a fan of arugula, but the quantity given in the salad was not worth its $7 price. I might've had 30 leaves. The dressing wasn't oppressive and wasn't a lot (how I like it). The presentation was very nice. The vodka linguine wasn't the best I've had. The linguine seemed a bit firm, but overall was alright. I'm not a foodie by any means. In fact, I might have the cheapest taste/mouth ever. But don't let that sway you when reading my review! haha.
The atmosphere of the area is very inviting. There's free parking, the Piazza is awesome, and Harrison the waiter was great. Overall it was a fine experience, I just wasn't a huge fan of the food.
I was extremely satisfied with the food at vino. We had cocktails, appetizers, entrees, and desert. All of them arrived very quickly and the waitress was extremely polite. I highly recommend this place to locals. I was kind of confused to see the reviews only giving it three stars when the service was impeccable, the portion sizes were perfect. The only thing that is expensive is coctails which you would expect from any decent restaurant. For it to have an average of 3 stars would put it in the same class as places like PYT which is a horrible excuse for a restaurant and has absolutely terrible service. If your in the area give this place a try.
Vino was absolutely phenomenal. I would have rated last night's dinner six stars if possible... definitely one of the more memorable meals I've had.
There are so many good things I could say about the night. First off, the free parking and location in the Piazza was great... very accessible and easy in-and-out. The staff was exceptionally friendly the whole night. The decor was so cool... huge black and white vintage portraits up on the wall under dim lighting. They were playing a very eclectic mix of music... from Gypsy Kings to 40s big band to mellow techno music. The tables all have these wonderfully comfortable tall leather chairs. All this and we didn't even get served dinner yet!
We did order though... glass of house cab for me, which was good; and Jill had a Stella, off a surprisingly long beer list for an Italian restaurant. I cannot recommend their bruschetta enough... it was made with a sweet bread and brown sugar on top... absolutely the best bruschetta I've ever had (Italian restaurants in Italy included). I had their ribeye w/mashed potatoes and pom frites. Jill had their stromboli with prosciutto, ham and other tasty meats with a butternut squash dip. The meal was out of this world.
I hope to return here again and again in the future... you certainly can't go wrong eating here yourself!
Ok...Still think the spot is cool, but beware the Piazza!
Was eating and having some drinks outside when we noticed that it was raining a bit, yet the sun was still shining...It was then that we noticed the people looking up in fear...
Lo and behold, an entire plate glass window on the top floor of the Piazza had shattered, and the rain was not water...it was f*cking glass.
Yes, the whole place was showered with shards of falling glass...Not the best thing. No idea how it happened. Nothing hit the building. There wasn't any wind. It just broke...
Be careful of falling glass!!! But come back for the vino...Mark my words. The Piazza has bad vibes. Something stupid is going to happen here. It's Philly...Something always ruins good things...

Went here late on a Friday night and sat outside. Great location, good pizzas, decent wine list (though the markup is quite steep). Service was pretty bad though. Had to ask for water about a million times and it took ages for our drinks to come out. Then the appetizer (charcuterie plate, which was stellar) and entrees (two pizzas) came out at almost the same time. So, timing and service not great, food is pretty good. Atmosphere very nice.
This place is great. High quality food. Great service. Nice decor. Great location. My only recommendation is that since the place is called Vino, they could have a better wine selection. They have a couple good wines, and I don't think they need 100s but a few more would be nice.
Anchored on the corner of the new Piazza at Schmidts in Philadelphia's hopping Northern Liberties neighborhood is the new Vino Restaurant. General Manager Dave Steiger (formerly of Vintage Wine Bar in Center City) has assembled an impressive culinary offering with only weeks of prep time before opening.
First the ambiance: The full window wall are actually sliding doors that permit full open-air exposure. A few tables have been set up outside on the Piazza side of the building. Inside, the simple rustic look of the tables is complemented by the more modern structural design of the building. The bar is centrally located in the room and deftly managed by the lovely Erin.
Beverages: Vino offers a full bar but the name of the restaurant tells the main story. Nearly 50 wines by the glass are offered, ranging in price from $6 to $32 per glass. All of these wines are also available in full bottles as are an additional 20 or so wines. Dave's prior experience working at Vintage is evident in his great selection of wines. Both domestic and foreign varietals are available.
Food: Among the 11 appetizers on the menu, my favorite would have to be the Calamari Fritti which comes with some tempura-cooked broccoli rabe and a hot pepper. Not to be missed! The Risotto Con Zucca with butternut squash is a bowl full of warm love! There are four panini offerings including lemon basil chicken. I usually go straight for the brick oven pizzas. You can choose one of the 5 predefined items or build your own custom pie using one of 30 gourmet ingredients including artichoke hearts, capers, goat cheese, roasted eggplant and broccoli rabe. I have tried 3 of the listed pizzas and designed one of my own. All were thoroughly delicious.
This is a great place for a date or happy hour after work. If the weather is warm and the ball game is on, sit at one of the outdoor tables and watch the game on the Piazza's jumbotron HDTV.
The menu looks great upon first read. Too bad looks don't help taste at all. The food was bland and overpriced. The wine selection is ok but I expect more of a wine bar. Overall, you could do way worse as far as restaurant choices but I wouldn't put this in my top choice list.
Kudos to Vino! I had to find a venue to host a women's event on a Saturday night at the last minute. The owner, GM and staff accommodated my every need from private lounge space to great food and service. The Prosciutto con Fichi al Forno and Baked Eggplant were out of this world! Mmmmm! I'll be back to try some of their amazing wine selection when I'm not on the clock, for sure!
My friends and I had a great brunch there this past Sunday. Outside seating, awesome, hip setting. Food was YUMMY! try the breakfast pizza on a wholewheat crust..:)
Visiting from NYC, I had Sunday brunch here a few weeks ago with friends and had a great time. Food (had a fritatta) and Bloody Marys were delicious. There was 5 of us and was happy to hear they could accomodate us outside on the patio. Combine this with the friendly staff, great service and the Sunday Brunch prices, Vinos was a great way to end my weekend visit.
There are not many times that you can sit at a new wine bar in Northern Liberties and glance out the windows to see Raab Himself (of Jackass fame). And while you imbibe, Raab himself is up to no good with some man in a red Elvis getup.
Vino Restaurant and Lounge, sitting on the north corner of the new Piazza at Schmidts on N. 2nd Street, has an incredible selection of 22 red and 15 white wines by the glass ranging from $6 - $12. Not to mention sparkling and rose selections, as well as dessert, port and grappa. The impressive 30 bottle beer list is almost overshadowed by the full bar; a third option drinking option that is a satisfying change from the strictly wine and beer bars throughout Philly.
It is a restaurant as well as bar and lounge but I am a bar sitter. Starting out with a dry Beefeater martini while waiting for my friends to peruse the menu, I decided upon the Panzanella (Italian bread, cucumber, red onion and tomato salad) paired with the Tariquet Sauvignon Blanc (France). The salad was light and fresh, enhanced by the crisp and peppery Sauvignon Blanc. The next dish of Prosciutto con Fichi al Forno matched perfectly to the recommended Cannanou. The smooth tannins and brooding red fruit opened up the flavor and texture of the grilled stuffed blue cheese figs wrapped in prosciutto. To think that I was allowed to taste a Nebbiolo before deciding upon the Cannanou is a fantastic side note. While inhaling a fresh Brick Oven Margherita pizza that I watched being made and then fired up from the bar, I finished off the rest of my Birra Morretti...when in Rome.
Sit outside, inside, relax at the bar or in the open air lounge; but defiantly imbibe.
like a lot of places on the piazza, they're learning the ropes so I can't be too hard.
Our waiter was nice and friendly, as was everyone. Ordered some beers and a pizza to start. The pizza was GREAT. Maybe one of the best I've had in a while.
BUT as things got busy the wheels seemed to come off. Every time a runner came out with food they stumbled around looking for a table that seemed like they were waiting for it. We got food placed on our table 3 times. It was never ours...
our tab would have probably been 3x more if we got our drinks in a timely manor. we would order a round and it would take 15-25 min. most times one or two drinks were missing, beer was warm or we got the wrong drinks all together. After having this happen a few times we gave up on ordering more food...and paid our tab.
Pros: great atmosphere, prime location , VERY tasty food,
cons: no service bar so drink service can be painfully slow at peak times. crew still a little green...
BUT, I'll be back and look forward to seeing the place when the kinks are gone! I still think about that tasty pizza...
:
the worst pizza I have had in the city. nay, ever.
i split a pizza with my friend - i have a thing for goat cheese, so i went for the farmers market pizza, which on the menu is described as a veggie pie (no mention of cheese) so i ordered this with added goat cheese. It came out with mozz AND goat cheese. this was not what i orderd, so i sent it back. Then they rushed the fix-it-quick pizza, and the crust that should have been crisp and blistered because we WERE there for brick oven pizza, was doughy and underdone. there was NO sauce ANYWHERE on the pie, there were no onions as described on the menu, and when we ATE the pie, i realized there was no salt, garlic, or spices of any kind. it was literally a few vegetables with a few smidgeons of goat cheese on half-raw bread, and there was a good 2 inches of nothing between the edge of the crust and the toppings.
UGH.
I am never eating there again - sLice is my spot - no one has beat them in my book.
but we'll see if gianfranco or mix can bump sLice from my topspot. I'll keep on posting.
While they have ample outdoor seating which is great, I have two complaints: small food portions and even smaller wine pours. While the food and wine are good, the portions are tiny and not cheap. The pizza is good and is your best bet here.
This was an amazing experience. The food was surprisingly sophisticated and the servers were amazing. I haven't been to many restaurants where the help was so at ease and yet so on point. My girlfriend and I shared four plates because we were told they serve in a family style tradition. We had the Prosciutto Figs, the Seafood Pasta, a Hot Sausage pizza and the melon gazpacho. All were amazing. We will be back very soon. Delicious!
