There was me, that is Deez "Dassnachocheez" Nuttz, and my three droogs, that is Fever, Luna, and Greg. And we sat in the Vine Bar, trying to make up our rassoodoks what to do with the evening. The Vine Bar sold beer, wine, and well drinks with yarbles, which is what we were drinking... all of the above. This would sharpen you up and get you ready for a bit of the old Ultraviolet. Not ultra-violence. Ultraviolet. Some people get those confused.
Anyway, "Ultraviolet" is a dobby British TV series from the 90's. Real horrorshow. I had just kupetted it on DVD and we were all looking forward to a viddy at my flat later that evening. But right now our nochy was young, O my brothers, and sitting at the bar watching all the sexy soomkas goolying about filled our gullivers with the single most important thought of any given night: indulging in a bit of the old "In-Out, In-Out." Most people call it "In-N-Out Burger" because that's what it's called, but for some reason, we call "In-N-Out Burger" the old "In-Out, In-Out." Don't ask.
Anyway, we were starving like Marvin and we couldn't wait to make our way over to the old "In-Out, In-Out" on Sunset for an animal style double-double with cheese combo, and then on to my abode afterward for a bit of the old "Ultraviolet". But as the night progressed, it was clear that neither would be realised; as we ended up staying at the Vine Bar until the wee hours of the morning - reveling in the unexpected song & dance and laughing and govoreeting with the friendly Devotchkas on the dance floor. My only quibble with the play selection was that it contained no bits from the glorious 9th by Ludwig van, but still, it was gorgeosity and yummy yum yum.
We've been back a few more Fridays since then and it's as clear as an azure sky of deepest summer that when me and my bratties are low on cutter and we need a malenky mesto filled with clockwork lewdies who appreciate firegold and warbles of the highest order, then Vine Bar does not disappoint.
This place is cool. Not cool, like "rad dude," but cool like yesteryear, Sinatra Rat Pack.
It's a neighborhood bar, but doesn't feel like a neighborhood bar. It's clean, it's comfortable, it's cool (temperature), it's spacious in a way, which is strange to say because it's L shaped.
The bar itself is gorgeous dark wood with gilded huge mirrors on it. There are lovely bejeweled chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. And not only do comfortable bar stools align the bar but Vine Bar also has a few booths for bigger groups of people. And ladies, the restroom is also clean, well lit and roomy.
HUSH on Thursday nights at Vine Bar is a great place to go if you want to chill out, relax, have a drink and listen to some great music. No cover, by the way. DJ Miss L. spins an eclectic mix of downbeat, darkwave and trip hop. Last night, she played Sneaker Pimps, Bitter:Sweet, Fluke, Siouxsie Sioux, Depeche Mode, Cibo Matto, Portishead, Exillon, The Cure, Peter Murphy and others I can't remember just now. There is a dance area, it's small, but you can still move if you want to. Also, they have drink specials and show movies on a big TV too.
I know I'll be back.
It's hard to breathe at the Vine Bar. I only come here for "The Bullet" mod nights and every time I am here claustrophobia sets in approximately 1.5 hours later - "Time to go. Gotta get out". Or is it the naff "psychedelic" DJ set that kills the mood for me? ( Dear Bullet, some late 60's music is great to listen to but simply not danceable. )
The Vine Bar is narrow, dark-ish and the dancefloor at the back is tiny. There's a door at the back which opens onto the smokers' area but that doesn't help much. There is an "upstairs" if you want to sit back on couches, people watch down below, whatever... curiously, this room was empty last night while everyone sweated below.
And yes, I'll probably be back for another round of dancing.
The place was so little and cute. I would recommend coming here with a group of friends to take over the entire bar.
The music that night was hip hop/rap not my thing for a bar but it was fun.
I didnt get a chance to go to the bar to see how the bartenders work but other than that the place is really awesome inside!
Awesome little bar that served good stiff drinks. Well at least that's how I remember it. I came here years back for a going away party for Kat Von D before she left for Miami Ink. So that must've been a few years ago. Got the meet Bam Margera and the guys from H.I.M.. All cool people to share a drink with.
The interior was pretty cool but one thing that stood out was a random wall of TV's that were hidden in the back. I stood out like a sore thumb though since I was dressed all in Abercrombie (I just got off work at a law firm) but never got any negative vibes.
Need to come back here and check it out again.
YAY!
When I heard this place changed ownership and went through a makeover, I was worried and sad. Sure, the old place was sticky, seedy, and wouldn't trust sharing a communal pot of fondue with others, but I remember it to have the best second Saturdays for groovin', eclectic music to dance to. Sure, its latter days was rife with hipsters, but it always held a special place in my heart, and I was worried the intimate space would fall victim to another ultra lounge with geometric sitting-places and overpriced cocktails.
Instead, the place looks goood. The once sea green interior has been replaced with black, as if a wave of darkness hit, even the chandeliers. The bar's been expanded to run along the whole side wall upon entering, which is great, and it's very impressive to see their large selection of liquor behind it amidst HUGE mirrors to make this narrow area appear larger. The loft area was still a work-in-progress when I visited, but from what I saw, it's destined to be a nice little (and undoubtedly stuffy) mingle/lounge area to escape any ruckus from below.
I happened to visit this place on a very slow and freezing Tuesday night, and when we got there, the place only had two patrons aside from one of the owners' boyfriends and the bartender. Teddy, who is a recent LA transfer from Canada, was manning the bar that night, and he whipped up some tasty, heavy-handed pours. Say hi to him, he's a sweetie.
From what I was told by everyone involved with the bar (basically, everyone besides my friend and myself), they've got some great things planned for this place. I'm rather excited to see how this new place in a familiar space shapes up!
Do note: Price of the drinks were moderate, and that's perhaps the one thing I do miss from its former life. Despite what another reviewer mentioned, I do kind of miss the PBR on tap, you know, for those tims when you just have to keep it real. ;) And whatever you do, DO NOT park across the street at the El Pollo Loco parking lot. It may be closed, but towers cruise the area looking for a car to take away.
Less hipster, more cool.
That is the nutshell of this place and I definitely enjoyed it. When I first came to Vine Bar it was during its first incarnation in 2006. I thought it was okay and I even made out with a hot guy against the back wall of TVs who might have been wearing a white belt and drinking PBR. Yes...so scandalous.
I tried to dance in hipster indie rock fashion to tunes too cool for anyone to know about because they were sooo underground and only on mixed tapes floating around town. Yes...so cool.
I tried to blend, I tried to look socially acceptable in skinny jeans and tops with a sorta kinda 80's flair and act like I didn't look like a total tard trying too hard like the rest of the clientele here. Yes...so sad.
I tried, I tried and I tried again until I remembered, "HEY! I'm not a fucking hipster!"
Since those handful of times I never put it high on my list as a place to return to until a few weekends ago when the Dream Team (Aunny D, Edgar C and Winfield H) and I had come from 3 of Clubs and heard rumblings of it being a new bar now. We strolled up the street and walked into a somewhat empty bar that looked like it got a makeover from the grimy look of its past.
Where there was darkness before, there are chandeliers now, along with comfy booths where the TV walls used to be and a very friendly and welcoming owner who was more than happy to chat with us and made us feel very happy during our time spent here.
I'm hoping this place does well and picks up a bit, because the music was cool, the location is great and they get automatic points for not serving PBR on tap!
Hehe, bitter, party of one?
better known as the arrow bar..and the arrow basically means "please oh please come in, we're lonely." Honestly, every time i've been here it's like you're walking into the saloon at the OK Corral. A ghost town basically. however, there's something quaint about the joint and if they could actually keep a customer it'd be a decent place to drink.
Update 1/7/08: Obviously I reviewed the old joint that used the occupy this space. The new spot is just called Vine Bar.
And after returning to Vine Bar with the sexy Yelp mistresses Stephy and Aunny, I'm giving this place another star since I ordered four drinks and was charged the normal price of $28.
==============================
Boo-yah! Another find for me. Ha-ha. That's right! Uh-huh.
(does the chicken strut)
Okay. I'm a dork. On with the review...
I feel conflicted about this place.
Plus 1 star - it's close to my domicile (you know - for my conquests)
Plus 1 star - it's not the 3 of Clubs (which is kinda beat by now)
Plus 1 star - great service (the owner Rick gave me and my date a tour of the place like a proud papa)
Plus 1 star - it's spacious with its separate bar / lounge / loft areas (b/c I like to roam like a sex panther)
Plus 1 star - loads of parking on Vine at night
Minus 1 star - I got charged $9 for a Dewars (in all fairness, Rick didn't charge me for the Diet Coke my date drank)
Minus 1 star - I got charged $9 for a Dewars (redundant I know, but I feel pretty strongly about this)
I know this area of Hollywood is becoming more and more high-falluting, but Gadzooks! $9 scotches are quite expensivo even for a mack daddy high roller like me.
I'd like to visit Vine one mo' 'gain, but maybe next time I'll do a preheat first.
Vine bar oh vine bar you are quickly becoming my favorite watering hole in LA. And why you may ask? Its not crowded. It's a a lovely space with lighting that neither offends nor obscures to the point of frustration. There are large mirrors and wrought iron chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The bar's configuration and design is pleasing to the senses and the staff are all friendly... this isn't a dive bar, a few steps up from there, I'd call it a hidden neighborhood gem. I know nothing 'bout the neighborhood, but I do know I like this bar. Added plus... when we arrived they were playing Trespass on the LCD, when we left Reservoir Dogs was playing... gotta love a place with a sense of cinema!
Hidden but great bar. Look for the arrow pointing down, just south of Santa Monica. Great space! Burgundy walls, giant black baroque mirrors, black chandeliers, long bar that runs the length of this place. Some booths in back, and a private room on the 2nd floor. Best part - cheap drinks AND a jukebox that means you control the music! $9 grey goose drinks (it's $14 everywhere else in Hollywood) - nuff said. Really nice bartenders - no hollywood attitude. Definitely going back with a crowd - I'm bringing the party!
I Love this bar!!!! I hang out there at least three times a week and drink the Samuel Adams Winter Lager all night. The place has three new owners who are totally cool and the price's are very good. They have great beers on tap. They have their own parking lot at the "Paragon dry cleaners" lot right on the corner of Vine and Fountain. So you don't have to worry about getting towed. GREAT SPOT!!!!!!!
I go here Wednesday nights for Lies, good music (techno, house, minimal), good beer, good vibes, I really like this little spot. Oh yeah and the bar tender, if you're nice to him he'll hook you up!
