Breakfast, malasadas, spam musubi and PIES!
In the two weeks we were on Kauai, I lost track of how many times we got food from Village Snack. Everything is really good. Their malasadas are right up there with the K-Mart lady, spam musubi was excellent, you can get Loco Moco with hashbrowns, brown or white rice. For $8.50 they make a 3 egg omelet (you pick up to 8 items) it comes with hashbrowns or rice and toast - I didn't need lunch. Also bakery items (brownies, choc cake, pies). We picked up a whole Haupia (coconut cream) Pie - $14.00. You can order Lilikoi Chiffon for the same price.
I tried their famous Chili Pepper Chicken plate - spicy, but not hot, juicy chicken, rice and potato/mac salad - YUM!!!!!!! -

Four of us stopped for lunch based on Yelp raves. Three of us were very disappointed.
It's a nice shop in downtown Hanalei with friendly staff and a fast kitchen. We had a cheeseburger that was called "fine", a loco moco that was pretty salty and basically "meh" and two Filipino specials of "not bad" noodles "grossly overcooked" mixed veggies and pretty badly done chicken and braised pork.
Maybe would go back to try the chili chicken everyone talks up, but not for any other reason. -

We went here to get some cheap breakfast eats, with a Hawaiian twist.
From the look of the other Yelp reviews, I don't think we fully took advantage of this place, as the specialties seem to be of the lunch/dinner variety.
This is a little hole in the wall in the inside of a shopping center in Hanalei. The service is your usual diner-greasy spoon-prickly. You order at the counter and are called when your food is ready.
I had the macadamia nut waffles, which, while very simple, definitely hit the spot. They didn't skimp on the macadamia nuts in this Hawaiian twist on an old favorite. Yum!
Next time, we'll have to try one of the plate lunches. Go for the inexpensive prices and good food; don't go for the ambiance. :) -

The absolute BEST hole in the wall Hawaiian restaurant in all of Kauai! We discovered this restaurant way too late during our stay here, but whatever we did try, we absolutely loved.
Try the chili pepper chicken and the haupia pie. You WON'T be disappointed! -
Review from Gary W.
First off, the map location is misleading and is located north of the marked location dead center in Hanalei. You can't see the business from the street and must go into the "Ching Young Village".
That said, don't hesitate to park close by and go here as this is the perfect breakfast and lunch spot (lunch starts from 11AM - 3PM) on the north shore.
Why perfect? Well, I didn't know how much I loved fried chicken until I got to Kauai and couldn't find a decent place to eat for a reasonable price. Then, I found the "Village Snack and Bakery Shop" that fits into the sweet spot where you can find good food at a reasonable prices.
Of course I ordered the chili pepper chicken and I really liked that they chop the chicken into chunks (with bone) instead of the normal chicken pieces (breast, leg, thigh, etc). Each piece was perfectly deep fried and not a hint of grease (cooked with high heat). The chili sauce was in the bottom and the chicken placed on top so not to be covered or overpowered by the sauce.
Save room for the Haupie pie as it's the perfect complement to the meal to clean the pallet. -

Drove all the way from Hanapepe because we heard so many things about the "Amazing Chili pepper chicken!!"
It was good but not worth the drive :(
We could have got teri fried chicken at Imu Hut which Is just a 2min drive away.
In the end it was worth the drive because we hung out at Hanalei bay and jumped off the pier. So overall I'd try it again if I'm in town but I wouldn't drive all that way just for chicken again. Oh well you live and you learn. -

This little place is a great find. Not only is the grandma that runs the store super cute and friendly, but the plates are cheap and pretty yummy.
I had the loco moco (yumm) and my friend had the chili pepper chicken. We both really liked our plate.
I would have to say, this place isn't the best plate lunch I've ever had, but if you're in the area and in need of a cheap good bite, check this place out. You can't beat a cheap, yummy tasting, grandma laughing behind the counter and joking with you sorta place. -

cheap cheap cheap food and desserts. Get your food to go or dine in either way you will be pleased.
Had the honey chicken and the combo.EVERYTHING tasted wonderful and the best part is it didn't burn a hole in my pocket. -

Love this place for the chili pepper chicken! This place is a must stop for us during our annual Kauai vacation. The skin is so crispy that I cannot resist and gobble it up (normally, I would pass on the skin on fried chicken - cuz of the high calories - but this one is truly irresistable!!!!)
I also recommend their Haupia pie - its a short-bread cookie crust, coconut gelatin and then some pudding and whip cream. I like chocolate but they also offer vanilla. -

While on vacation (July 2011), dropped the family at Tunnels and came back here to pick up some lunch.
The fried chicken was delicious and the chocolate haupia pie was a great finishing touch......all while sitting at the beach and watching the tourists eating sandwiches and chips. Soooo much better than that! Yummm... -

We were on a Polynesian Adventure Movie Tour and we stopped off to have lunch in this cute little town.
The tour guide recommended this place for lunch and it seemed very authentic and the people working here were very friendly. The place was packed and the line went all the way out the door.
My whole family and I had the special which was a "Chinese Plate." It included short ribs, rice, and teriyaki roasted chicken. The chicken was exceptionally good but the rice and short ribs were just mediocre. The short ribs were covered in an orange sauce and there wasn't much meat. There were two giantic scoops of rice but one would have been sufficient - it tasted like it had been sitting around for a while but complimented the short ribs well.
They had beautiful desserts in here that I would like to try the next time around. The menu available was so ecclectic - it seemed to cater to everyone.
I like the pizza place better across the way but a solid option in town. -

This is a place you don't want to miss when in Princeville. It's a small place with seating or you can sit outside. The girl behind the counter was super friendly.
Hubby and I both had the chili pepper chicken! Oh my goodness! It is really hard to explain. Let's just say it's awesome. The flavor explodes in your mouth. They serve white or brown rice or a half and half- their Hapa rice.
Another not to be missed is their desserts. We took home a piece of their haupia pie - actually two- a vanilla and a chocolate. I would say this was the tastiest dessert on the island.
You know it's a great place when you see the locals having lunch there. -

Chicken was too dry.
The pepper chicken was okay, kind of spicy to me. -

Best place ever! No need to go anywhere else, this place is the best for breakfast and lunch. Pies are awesome!
The mac panacakes are the best. Chocolate cake with cream cheese is delicious. Highly recommend the haupia pie. They emoyees have so much aloha. The best place to go on Kauai. If I could give them ten stars I would. -

I swear on everything that is holy that I have to hear about the chicken at this place, on a weekly basis from my other half. I think if he could steal the family/employees from there and keep them in our spare room he would die a fat and happy person.
Chili pepper chicken....everyone rants and raves and rants and raves and with good reason, it is frigging delicious. Piggy that I am I chose the three meat combo and had a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I really loved the Macaroni salad, reminded me of childhood days on the old Indian reservation! Throw in some of that pie and two diet cokes (yes the irony I know) for under 20 bucks and you got yourself a delicious, artery clogging lunch. -

Don't make the same mistake we did. Yelp reviews steered us wrong. This place was terrible. My wife is Filipino and so were the girls behind the counter. Can't believe they didn't warn us to go elsewhere! Where's the loyalty?!? Terrible terrible Loco Moco that made me borderline ill. PASS ON BY!!

Having a place like the Village Snack and Bakery Shop in almost every town should be a law!
A variety of items are on the menu, but if you haven't heard already...'The Snack Shop"'s main winner is the most delicious, most awesomeness, able-to-eat-anytime, CHILI PEPPER CHICKEN! This plate 'hits-the-spot' for sure! Even if you aren't a spicy person, no worries. The chili peppers are very mild, and the flavor goes all the way to the bone, mmm! I'm getting so hungry just writing about it! To top things off, having a banana cream pie at the end of your meal will just make you the happiest person alive! Even the chocolate haupia pie is a great choice :] Some, if not most, of the menu items are prepared as you would expect at this kind of locale, but in my healthy opinion, some of it may be a bit oily; just estimate with your choice on the menu.
The service is really great; friendly and local-style warmth surrounds this older food destination, which is great to find in Hanalei, being that this is pretty much a tourist destination.
TIPS:
-order the chili pepper chicken (w/ Arizona Iced Tea :] )
-take-out and drive to Hanalei Bay, it's 'the life'
-try some of the banana cream pies (delish)Listed in: STOP

If you are staying nearby this place is a must-have. We had the chili pepper chicken and the Chinese mixed plate. The pork ribs that came with the Chinese mixed plate were excellent but bordering on too-sweet. The chicken was crispy, not very spicy, and delicious. Noodles and rice were well done. A nice family-run place, well worth a visit.

The Village Snack & Bakery Shop is located in the Ching Young shopping center in Hanalei. I saw Pierce Brosnan there once! Well, the shopping center, didn't see him at the Diner. The place is in the back, and there are some picnic tables set up outside so you can enjoy the beautiful Kauai weather.
Haupia Pie!! It's amazing! Like the most delicious coconut cream pie you will ever EVER have. The crust on the bottom tastes like a macadamia nut shortbread, haupia (a firm coconut gelatin?) on top of the crust, then coconut cream pie filling, then whipped cream, and finally coconut shavings. I have a picture of it saved to my phone!
May be the best dessert on the island. Dare I say it, better than shave ice from JoJo's??
Enjoy! -

One of the few Mom & Pap local snack bars still in business on Kauai, I always stop here when in Hanalei for my favorite chili pepper fried chicken and chocolate haupia pie.

ONO, da kine brahddah...Absolutely do not pass up a chance to get you some of the local grindz at Dah Snak Shop. Everything is good, I mean everything. I have tried most of the menu and can tell you that you won't be disappointed. My favs are the tropical pancakes with coconut and mac nuts, the loco moco and the chili pepper chicken. Daily specials rock too and can range from curry stew to stir fry and everything in between. For dessert get the haupia.

Stopped at Village Snack and Bakery twice during the vacation to Kauai. The first visit I split the famous chili pepper chicken w/husband. I like that you had a choice between mac and green salad. Chili pepper chicken consisted of very good fried thighs in a pool of sweet, thin sauce. The chicken wasn't very spicy. Good and crispy, but not spicy. There wasn't enough hint of chili pepper. Did I already mention the chili pepper chicken was not spicy?
What made us come back a second time was the vanilla haupia pie. We had the haupia pie on both occasions. The shortbread crust was nice and crunchy. Haupia was solid, literally and figuratively. Layer of vanilla pudding and coconut sprinkle topping added a bit, but would be even better if it was real whipped cream on top.
If I was on the island again, I'd go back for the shortbread crust! Skip the chili pepper chicken and fill up on pie. -

Good local place for lunch. The line gets long around 11:30, so try to get there beforehand. The chili pepper chicken is good and not spicy at all. It's basically fried chicken with a sweet pungent sauce. The rice and mac are excellent as well. You can also get brown rice. There is also a plate lunch of the day. The fried noodle plate lunch looked scrumptious.
The chocolate haupia pie is also very good. It's a layer of chocolate cream, another layer of coconut cream, topped by whipped cream, all on a thick sugar cookie crust.
This is a good place to stop if you need to carbo load for an afternoon of hiking or swimming/snorkeling. It's located in the Ching Young shopping village. -

Studio City, CA
The food and service were mediocre. A bunch of locals ordered after we did and they got their food promptly while we lowly tourists had to wait more than 15 minutes for our food to come out. The fried chicken was dry and chewy. The teriyaki chicken was pretty good but greasy. Prices were OK for Kauai but I wouldn't call it cheap...8-9 bucks a plate.

The chili pepper chicken is to DIE for. Super crunchy & the sauce compliments the dish perfectly. I could eat this dish everyday & have a heart attack & it would be worth it! The BF & I went one day & it was closed! I think it might have been a Sunday, can't recall. The haupia cake was really tasty! They've got vanilla or chocolate! We tried both! YUM

Chili Pepper Chicken. What more can I say? If you're ever on the North Shore and want to grab a bite to eat I would recommend trying the chicken here. Really good. Almost worth driving there from Kapaa just for the plate. Almost.

Uh-oh. Yelp alert. The food here does not live up to the existing Yelp rating. The favorite chili pepper chicken is just a couple of pieces of fried chicken with a spicy flavor. Please, just mediocre!! The other dish we had was the open face roast pork--less than average-very chewy and dry. This would only make the second time a Yelp rating let us down. Best to pass this one up and try anywhere else in the area.

Village Snack Shop was definitely a local secret! We might have to fly back to Kauai just to return to Village! It is very hidden in the shopping center and it cannot be seen from the road, so walk behind the front building to get to Village. I had a delicious breakfast wrap and my fiancee had some of the best banana pancakes we have ever tasted!! After leaving we were disappointed we didn't get another change to return but we certainly will on our next trip to Kauai!

A local divey breakfast and lunch spot I'm so glad we stumbled upon. The egg and bacon sandwich is delicious and if you're into a carb overload meal - this is the place for you. They'll stack your plate with rice, toast, eggs and mac salad if you so fancy.

This is a little mom and pop shop which serves up delicious local favorites in Hanalei on the island of Kauai. I would consider it a crime to go to Kauai without eating their chocolate haupia pie (coconut pudding, chocolate pudding and whipped cream pie on top of shortbread crust) or their macadamia nut, banana and coconut pancakes. They open early (6:30am) for breakfast and have a constant stream of locals and tourists lining up. Be patient because delicious food takes a little extra time and bring cash since they don't accept credit cards. Their pepper chicken is tasty as well but I am a bigger fan of their pancakes and sweets. My recommendation is to take your food to go and eat at one of the outdoor tables or run across the street and sit on the grass in front of Bubba's burgers.

This is my kind of place. Casual, lots of meat on the menu, and you get a good meal for the buck. Sure beats the $4 tiny slice of pizza across the courtyard. I had the daily special roast pork with gravy for $8. Tender meat, with lots of gravy, and a side of rice, and green salad. Very filling, like home cooking. I always find something new to try in here, and the food comes out pretty fast. Plus you can kick back at the cafeteria like tables and watch tv!

Not much to say about the decor or ambiance (or lack thereof), but this place has superb local food as should be. I often find the crappier the interior, the better the food in Hawaii. And it was the case with Village Snack & Bakery Shop. They're well-known for their apple crisp, which I unfortunately didn't have, but their loco moco is possibly the best I've ever had. Perfectly runny eggs, delicious gravy, hamburg steak that actually tastes like REAL hamburg steak (not just fried-up hamburger patties), all accommpanied by 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop of mac salad. Highly recommended if you're in Hanalei!

Very yummy baked goods and pastry items. The haupia is to die for. The apple cobbler is very good also. I want to go back and try everything in the case. I have not had a meal there, but have seen mostly locals having lunch, which means it is probably a great place to go.
