Mike is the man period.
When I was a kid he sold my family on buying me these Bavarian Fritzmeier skis back in the late 70's -- at least one old ski buddy still teases me about them! But -- hey man, they did the trick!!! Mike knew what was up. This year I picked up a pair of Volkl Katana's with Marker Baron's which I believe could be one of the most important set-ups ever made. So far this season those skis have bombed more powder lines in Wyoming, Utah and Tahoe that I can count and have lived up far beyond my expectations in all conditions. Mike was right again 30 years later!
Seriously local or not, I doubt you will find a more knowledgeable staff to answer you inquiries from beginning novice to expert. They carry all my personal fav brands and cater to the summer sport action as well. I don't know of any other shop that has lasted this long with as much integrity.
Sorry to be brief, but I was only in this shop for 20 minutes. Needed to borrow a shock pump, and the owner didn't hesitate to hand one over for me to use outside. They've got a great selection of bikes (santa cruz, trek, & specialized) including bikes from 500 (rockhoppers) to 3k+ bikes (stumpjumpers, blurlt2s, nomads, madones, ect...). Stocked to the wall of accessories, including a lot of gloves, jerseys, helmets, and supplies. The other side is their ski/snowboard area filled with mainly clothing. Got some sweet sunglasses for 30$.
Nice, clean (very rare in a bike shop), and friendly service. If I need to rent something, it will be here! Helps that it's on the main street in Incline, and its a 20min drive to North Star.
I, or actually my Dad, bought my first ski gear here in 1972 (Harts). Here I am thousand of ski runs later and I still come by the shop for the best gear, ski tunes and boot fitting in the region. My last pair of boots took hours to fit, I am very picky about ski boots, and I came in four or five times for adjustments and tweaks. These guys did not complain or after buying the boots charge me once for subsequent fit sessions.
Skis are expensive and they have rehabilitated more than one pair of skis I thought ruined for ever. This is also one of the few ski shops that will hot wax your skis with an iron, not just on the machine, custom mixing wax types. These guys are masters of ski tuning. They should be Mike and Steve still ski regularly and the staff is very excited and interested in talking about skis and skiing.
The rentals here are first rate. I bring all my Bay Area friends here because the gear is of much higher quality and in much better condition that what is available at ski resorts.
If you love skiing, or I guess snowboarding, this is the place.
Ski Loft has been in town forever. There is something to say about that. They are probably the best sports source in town. Skis to biking and a huge section of al gear in between. They also have great sales on Memorial day for ski gear. Mark your calendar.
Village Ski Loft is definitely the best Ski/Bike shop in town. They have a good selection, but what makes me like it so much is they have a great group of really friendly and helpful employees. Customer service is key in this industry and they do a great job.

Established in 1974
Village Ski Loft has been under the same ownership for over 30 years. The owners, Mike and Steve, are very involved in the business to this day. The day to day players have been working together for almost a decade as well.
