This place has been around for ages and I don't really know why.
The Pasta is OK but the pizza is sub par. Somehow it's half cold by the time it gets to the table and the crust is floppy, you can't pick up a slice without half of the toppings sliding off.
I was drunk and the pizza still wasn't very good.
Since I moved to the City, I've been on my quest to find SF's best pizza.
I've tried numerous different places, and am waiting to circle back with each of them one more time before reviewing them. With Village, though, I don't really want to waste my money, so I'll be short and simple:
Food: It's average pizza...I had a slice of cheese and a slice of the Combination....3 stars for the food.
Way overpriced for the quality, though, so I have to drop it a star...and I hate to do so, but I can't find any reason to give this place 3 stars.
Service: Waited 15 minutes for my slices; guy making the pizza looked angry, but honestly, he was in work mode, so who cares....lady working was super nice as well...All in all, no issues with the service.
Overall: Like I said; very average pizza, too high of costs. You may as well walk down the street on Polk and pay the same for a slice at Victor's....
Per yelp's description: "Meh. I've experienced better."
I had two slices here. One, the special of the day which was Hawaiian BBQ. It looked like they made a slice of cheese pizza before and then just added the pineapple, meat and bbq sauce. You could tell mostly because of how quickly everything fell off the slice, and the fact that the bbq sauce was cold.
I also ordered a slice of the prosciutto special to go and ate it later. Big mistake. You can't serve ham to a large Italian man and tell him it's cooked prosciutto. It just doesn't work that way. Call it ham please. Slice tasted like salt, that was the only flavor.
Nice enough staff and a cool inside decor, but really sub par pizza.
We have a few friends that rave about Village pizza being the best in the city. It's been book marked for me for a while to try. So the other night when the hubbs and i weren't in the mood to cook and wanted to veg out we thought, let's try Village! Bleh, we were totally disappoitned. It wasn't bad - but I don't think i've ever had a pizza i thought was actually 'bad' but it wasn't anything I'd ever have the desire to try again. I guess I'm glad we tried it as we're always like trying a new spot, but village wasn't impressive in any of the tastes, crust, toppings, sauce, cheese all totally bland.
If there was a half star option I would have choosen that. The absolute worst pizza. I was so disappointed. I have had the Village Pizzeria in the inner Richmond and thought it would be the same in Pac Heights. What a shock. Not only was my order wrong I asked for Pesto sauce and instead got red sauce but the whole thing tasted like it came from the freezer section in a grocery store. I will not order from them again. And to top it all off I ordered this when we had guests from out of town and had raved that they were going to love it and then we all hated it. Such a nightmare.
It's solid. It's good. It's tasty. It's not the cheapest however it shouldn't be because the ingredients actually tasted fresh, particularly the mozzarella which I think ALOT of pizza shops over salt. I've lived in this neighborhood, for roughly 8 years now and always passed it by tagging it as a tourist trap. I tried it out a few nights ago via delivery and it was good. Thanks Village Pizzeria, I'll be back!
The whole pie cheese is the only pizza I've had since I moved here over 30 years ago from NYC that actually looks, smells, tastes like and feels like in your hand a NY pizza. A slice even folds like a NY slice and just like a NY slice, if you angle it down, the olive oil drips off. The best in SF hands down. No contest here.
I've never been inside so this is only based on their delivery service.
I'm pretty sure the pizza is supposed to be huge, thin crust, NY style, but I didn't like it. . .It was super greasy and not very warm when it arrived.
I've also had the pasta (penne with a creamy tomato sauce) and it was great! My friend has ordered the calzone, which I liked much better than the pizza.
Delivery is fast and it's convienent for me.
Let me just say this:
I'm from New York. I grew up watching my parents take a big slice of pizza, fold it in half and eat while the oil dripped from the edges. I loved the smell of a good, cheap New York style pizza. When I moved to San Francisco, I refused to eat Pizza until I smelled this place..
Great pizza. New York street prices. Love it.
TIP: Don't try to complicate this pizza with too many toppings. I know, I like to complicate life too but when it comes to this pizza a good old cheese is always a winner.
Sicilian style pizza at its best!! Whats not to love!
Here you will not only find the tastiest slices of thin crusted, mouth watering, pizza in the Bay area (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). The crust was perfect. The sauce was evenly spread and the tomatoes were cooked to perfection. Fresh Basil added that flavor that I always seek in my Margherita pizza and certainly found here.
Some of the biggest servings of Antipasto salad (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Which I fell in love with at first bite! Loaded with Italian salami, sweet red onions, juicy black olives, sweet and spicy pepperocini, mozzarella cheese with crispy greens and a house made vinaigrette dressing.
Not only was the food amazingly delicious but the entire restaurant is a history of San Francisco area. Pictures adorn the walls and take you back to an era where life was simple. Exposed red brick (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) warms you and makes you feel at ease. The staff here are extremely friendly and accomodating. A family owned business at its best!
Although they have a huge * t e a s i n g * platter of fresh homemade brownies (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) I was already full.
Come in, sit at the counter, take a break from the hectic world outside and watch the master at work(http://www.yelp.com/bi...). You'll be glad you did. I know I was;)
Thank you!!!
Its really too bad I can't give this place a better rating...the pizza is great!! I love their thin crust NY style pizza. This last time I went in, I tried a slice of combo and another of pesto, both were delicious!!
The part that really backfired was the service. My friend and i walked in and sat a table for 15-20 minutes with no service. Not joking...I don't even think they realized we were there til one of the managers pointed us out. We ordered and the waiter offered us glasses for our drinks but she never came back with them. I'm not sure if they were just short handed that night, but it was a hassle for people that were trying to eat quick and go. Next time maybe I'll just take to go...
My visist to villlage pizzeria, was similar to the other review. I ordered the combo slice, and half the ingredients fall off upon consuming it. Prices are not cheap. The combo slice and drink with tax come out to $7.11. The pizza is made quickly. I recommend either for cheese or meat pizzas only. It was weird. Even though I paid all this money for the pizza, they had no to go boxes for pizza slices. They put it on a paper plate and toss it in a bag.
This place has perfectly passable pizza. I've had much better NY-style, and I've had much worse.
The pizza is decent, as is the pasta. They don't do a bad calzone either.
It's convenient before a show or a movie, and the service is usually pretty fast.
Overall, it's not going to be your favorite place, but it's an okay addition to your rotation if you live nearby and don't feel like going far and waiting forever to get a table at a top pizza place.
We had a ton of out-of-town guests coming into SF for our wedding weekend. We arranged to have a pizza night on a recent Friday night.
I made reservations at the restaurant for 25 people for 6pm, and when we got there, the tables were already set up. We pre-ordered the salads and pizzas the day before. Sue really helped our party out by giving us a voluntary discount for the salads and helped put it in a GIANT salad bowl for people to help themselves.
Slowly, our giant party started trickling in, and before we knew it, we had much more people there than we expected. Try 40.
Nevertheless, the restaurant responded perfectly! The servers were really patient with us (a lot of kids running around) and kept our beer and extra pizza orders coming. This despite being busy with the take-out and delivery orders from others.
The pizza itself was fantastic. It was piping hot and the it tasted fresh.
So kudos for the drinks, pizza, service, and staff! A 40-person party on a Friday night isn't a stroll in the park, but they pulled it off!
When: Saturday, 12/6/08, right before watching Milk (such a good movie!)
Who: Me, BF, BF's BFF
Why: Because Victor's on Polk was being rude and we couldn't sit down if we were only getting slices. And Village Pizzeria let us sit down even though we were only ordering slices...
What we ordered:
Me: Slice of mushroom and a Caesar salad
BF: Two slices of pepperoni (more like 1.75 slices since I bummed a few bites)
BF's BFF: Two slices of cheese, a garden salad, and a soda
The service was great. The restaurant was clean and had a great atmosphere with it's brick walls and old pictures and newspaper articles. It's good for singles and groups.
I'd definitely come back again. (Note: If you've ever been traumatized by the Village Pizzeria @ Rincon like I have and are worried about trying Van Ness out, I totally understand. You won't be disappointed with this location though.)
I went in late-ish for a slice and a beer... slice was undercooked, the sausage and pepperoni had a past ripe flavor and the beer was stale.
nice owner, nice setup and close enough to home that I might give them another chance... but first impression was gross.
Hands down the best slice I've had in this city. Grabbed a slice in the restaurant w/ a friend and it was crispy on the bottom, had a good taste and hit the spot. We felt the slices were a little light on sauce, but otherwise very good. Later that evening I wanted to share this pizza w/ my husband and order a pie online. great choice of options. For the issue of not enough sauce, they have a drop down menu giving the option of more or none. For the crispiness of the pie, they have a drop down option for that too. My husband and I enjoyed the pizza and will ONLY be ordering from here. Its a must for any east coast transplants like myself, my husband and the friend I went w/ earlier in the day. Good service to boot.
I've gotten delivery from here to my workplace plenty of times and have tried just about everything off the menu and yet cannot for the life of me recollect what their pizza tastes like. It doesn't leave any impression no matter what it's topped with. Not bad, not good, okay enough to keep eating.
Strangely their pasta is much more memorable than their pizza, even though they call themselves a pizzeria. Whenever news gets out in the office that we're ordering from Village Pizzeria, I make sure to place an order for their fluffy chicken ravioli smothered in creamy pesto and freshly diced tomatoes. Just what it takes to lighten up my day.
"Bipidi bopodi!!! ,"the great Peter Griffin, Family Guy. I went here before the Jaguares concert. This pizza was delicious, fresh, tasty better than anything I had in New York.
Its hard to mess up a pepperoni pizza slice and this place managed to do it during a workday lunch last week. There were barely 4 other people eating their lunches here which means that everyone else knows that the simplest of pizza slices is beyond this pizzeria's reach. Burnt, unsavory, dry, unappetizing describe the slice and the service. The coke on the other hand was good hence the two stars but at almost $6 for drink + (bad) slice this place isn't a bargain.
My go to Pizza place, yeah they are a little bit more expensive than victors down the street but its worth it.
Thin crispy crust, perfectly seasoned tomato sauce, and plentiful toppings.
The delivery can be a little bit slow, but nothing too bad. They have some of the best hot wings i have ever had from a pizzeria. I am knocking a star off though because today for the first time they screwed up an order, but they did send out another pizza so its all good.
I have tried all the pizza's people recommended to me here, then I stumbled across this place, and WOW! Great crust, fresh toppings, superior flavor, overall great pizza, the best! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Overpriced, SLOOOOW, and not terribly tasty. These are my three bones to pick with Village Pizzeria. Sauce tastes canned, slices are small, and the crust is inconsequential, as I do not care for that part of the pizza. More importantly, the salads are chintzy and just as overpriced as everything else on the menu.
On the upside, service is excellent and the woman manning the register is a joy to chat with. It would be delightful if I actually HAD that much time to hang out and talk. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to get even the simplest order to take out here. I mean, even a slice takes upwards of 10 minutes on a good day.
So. Two stars for the charming company while I wait and the comfortable, clean environment to wait in. But that's where my praise for Village Pizzeria ends. If you live or work in the area, order from CPK down Van Ness and get your excercise walking to pick it up.
Village Pizzeria is about a 45 second walk from my office, so I am there pretty often for a slice. It used to be a good, serviceable slice.
Now, they've raised their prices so that a cheese slice costs more than $3. This is ridiculous when the quality is considered.
Won't someone else put a pizza place less than a minute from my office?
My slice of chicken supreme pizza was just so-so. If I were a judge on Top Chef, I'd say "Good concept, but you failed on execution. Please pack your knives and go."
I mean, chicken, broccoli, roma tomatoes, garlic, and green onions on a pizza?? I couldn't think of a better combination. But the chicken was that fake, rubbery, processed chicken. The crust was too crispy, even for me. The cheese, sauce, and the rest of the ingredients were tasty, but for $4.50 for one slice, I want a bigger slice! Plus, chicken is really the main attraction on this pizza... and I scraped most of mine off. (When meat is so processed that you start worrying you'll bite into a ground-up bone... that is not high quality chicken, folks.)
The reason for 3 stars is that I liked the ambiance of the exposed brick walls, and the service was very good. Of course, the place was totally empty, so who knows about the service on a busy afternoon. All I know is, if I do patronize this place again (seeing as it's right down the street from my boyfriend's work), I will order a slice of pizza sans chicken.
Really? Really?!?! I'm sorry, but that wasn't pizza. I looked at the clock and realized it was 3pm, a mere 2 hours since I had ordered the pizza via their website. Now, I know that if you're a pizza place and it's New Years Day, you're probably slammed. 2 hours, though? I must go back to the time for a moment. You see, it damn well could have been 3am, and that pizza damn well could have been Mr. Pizza Man, and I damn well could have still been drunk. Mr. Pizza Man would have tasted better, actually. That was the kind of pizza you inhale without tasting at some ridiculous hour. Unless you're eating deep dish pizza, a fork and knife should not leave the drawer. I had to use mine, and I was none too thrilled.
It was soggy, the toppings literally stayed in the box as you pulled a slice out, and although one of the toppings was allegedly meatballs, they more closely resembled meatball shavings and not actual chunks of meat. The sauce was literally poured out of a can and the crust resembled that of a bike tire. I had to douse every slice with Frank's Hot Sauce just to make it edible. Add to all of this the fact that I rented "Harold & Kumar 2: Escape from Guantanamo Bay", only to turn it off some 14 minutes into the movie....what an unbelievably horrible film. I'd like Village Pizzeria to give me those 14 minutes back, because even if it wasn't their fault that I ordered the movie, it actually was.
Save your money and order Escape from New York. You'll thank me.
P.S. - I tried to post this review with no stars, but Yelp is making put at least one.
Hark! Yelpers have spoken and, lo, they have spoken the truth.
A pizza is not composed of a single entity. Like the Holy Trinity, it contains multiple parts out of which a pizza is made whole. At Village Pizzeria, the perfection to which those parts are blended is what determines how good your experience will be. I tried Village Pizza and found that its strengths and weaknesses are almost exactly what Yelpers said they were in advance.
1) The sauce: Bland and probably canned. 3 stars at best. If you come across a spot on your slice where bare sauce is revealed, by all means make sure to steal a mushroom or onion or some topping from elsewhere on the slice to cover that bald spot. It's the pizza equivalent of a combover, but desperate times demand desperate measures.
2) The toppings: Excellent. They have my favorite type of pepperoni -- the small, quarter-sized slices that crisp up around the edges. The veggies were fresh, too. Four stars.
3) The crust: Primo. Light and chewy with just a tinge of crispness. You can watch the chef expertly fling and flip the dough for hour after hour, so he's certainly got the method down. You better hope he doesn't play ultimate Frisbee, because he'd surely whomp your ass. Five stars.
Of course, I ordered a custom pie. Walk-in slice buyers might experience slight quality variations.
Coming from New York, I am admittedly a huge pizza snob, but this place lived up to my expectations. Nice cozy atmosphere, with cheap beer by the pitcher, and good pizza both by the slice and the pie. Not the best slice I've ever had, but definitely a standout in San Francisco.
I have walked past this place more than 40 times always wondering how the pizza is.
Tonight I noticed them on http://delivery.com and decided it was time.
Noticing their prices are slightly more than say...Nizarios I expected more class in my pizza. This was not the case.
My total came out around $18 for a 14" pizza. I got my order about 45 minutes after, but the price was $3 higher! I called them and they said their prices were wrong online. This is no problem if they would CALL you and inform you of this rather than trying to pull a fast one. Nothing was offered for my grievances, even though I explained to them I wouldn't have bought the pizza if it was that expensive. I want my 45 minutes back.
Ok, I was hungry enough to dish out the extra money. The pizza was not very hot. I had a pesto chicken, the ingredients were good but there was hardly an pesto on it. Now the crust was what really ruined the taste. I don't know if they have other crust options but their hand tossed is horrible.
I will never eat from here again.
This place is great!
They make it the way you like it, crispy and consistently great. The delivery times can be a bit long if you wait until say...8pm Friday night, but worth it.
Calzones are filled just right and the hotwings have just enough zing.
If you are looking for place for your goto pizza joint, then look no further.
I'd give this 3.6 stars...better than average, but not great. Its a great thing when you can tell the guy how cooked you want the crust, I like mine slightly under so its perfection when I heat it up in my oven at home.
Having moved here from Brooklyn...I know Brooklyn pizza. This is close. But the price for a slice? Fhagettaboutit!
Ok, so I work in the area and eat here sometimes...I say sometimes because....1. The food is just "OK". Its not horrible but its not gonna be the best pizza or sandwich ever. 2. Its overpriced...a meatball sandwich and a soda is like $10 (remember, the food is just 'ok').
But the service was friendly and but the girl seemed a little confused and messed up my order...its ok. I'd still eat there every so often tho. But its not my first choice. Try the brownies there though. They are better than the pizza.
Went to this place before a show at the Grand Ballroom. It wasn't amazing pizza, but it was handy, cheap, and quick to get a slice of pizza and a beer before a show.
The veggie pizza was a little weird - it should have been called "pepper pizza" because that was what most of the veggie matter was but it was good.
Also of note was how nice the guy at the registers was - he was very friendly and not just a cashier-drone.
If I go to another show at the Grand, I would definitely go back here to get dinner beforehand!
This was the first place I ever ate at in the city. It was right across from our hotel and made for a great bite to grab at a decent price. My mom fell in love with their home made vinagrette dressing. Now I live here and order from them once in a while. I live way closer to the one on clement so if I order online it comes from this one which is a little odd. Might be helpful if they had one choice for delivery from each location (other than the phone, but really...who uses a phone anymore haha)
Village makes a solid slice of pizza that doesn't offend my east coast sensibilities. It's delicious.
But really, what's the deal with pizzerias in California charging $3+ for a slice of cheese pizza? In NJ you get a whole large pie for $8-$12.
i haven't ate here in a very long time, but it does bring back nostalgic memories of my childhood. as a child into my teens i used to work at my dad's shop on saturdays. saturday was also the day he'd treat the whole staff to lunch; our pick at that!
we would often order a sicilian pizza at village pizzeria. i remember the pizza shape and slices were squares. i would always come along for the ride to pick up the pizza, and would anticipate biting into the tasty pie as we took it back for lunch.
i have to say that i learned about many great restaurants and whole-in-the walls working in the city on those saturdays...
yummy taste, nice pricing and variety.... i love the calzone tasty as well as all the types of pizzas they have
I love this place.
They have some of the best pizza, hot wings, and service in the city. It's also a great spot to eat right before or after heading to AMC 14 movie theatre since it's across the street.
I suggest heading in here after work, grabbing a beer or two, some hot wings to start, then followed by a specialty pizza. The cheese/artichoke heart combo is good. Then just mosey over to the old Cadillac building to catch a flick!
One of the closest to authentic NEW YORK SLICE in ALL OF SAN FRANCISCO.
If you, like me, are an ex-New Yorker, and cringe every time someone orders some thick slab of mushy doughed, too much cheese and some pinenuts bullshit they call pizza out here in San Francisco then you need the plain cheese slice from Village.
Their buffalo wings are the best on the planet. I don't even put ranch or blue cheese on mine (I never to anyway, but that's beside the point) they are so good just by themselves. Unlike other wings - they have a crunch to them, and the flavor is unbeknownst to any other wing flavor I have ever tried.
My friends and I always make our own pizza. Their crust is always perfect and always made the same. How do they do it?!
Fabulous.
