Now this was my idea of a heaven. Tons of old stuff neatly organized but with ample amounts to look through that made it seem overwhelming. The sifting through things that stirs up the old dust is my idea of happiness. I love hunting for treasure and this place certainly has tons of it. I just wish we drove rather than walked here. We stumbled upon this place while in route for the Hawthorne district.
Tons of furniture.
Tons of little things to look at.
Tons of clothes and awesome prices!Listed in: I love vintage good spots both…

Review from Jess K.
This place is fantastic... what thrift stores used to be. None of this Goodwill crap... where a shirt might cost you fifteen bucks just because it is in good condition. The prices are completely reasonable, and there are sales practically every day.
The place is TINY. But never fear.. there is more crammed into that "tiny" shop than you could possible imagine. And that isn't even counting the back patio area, or all of the stuff they put out front everyday. You can get everything here.. from vintage [cool quality old vintage, not crappy vintage] lampshades and record players, to everything you could need in your kitchen, to jewelry and clothes. To top it all off, they have all sorts of local handmade crafts that are sold on consignment... from hats to place mats to jewelry. Again, at prices that are completely reasonable.
OOOH! You can also bring in your own stuff and sell it [on consignment] in return for cash or store credit [you get more store credit than you get for cash]. e
Definitely worth a stop, just make sure you give yourself time to peruse... and don't forget the back porch area. I come here probably once a month, and have found some seriously awesome and unique things. Last week I left with a $5 dress, two pairs of earrings, a neat wood sculpture thingy, a houseplant in a cool ceramic pot [$4].....hmm what else, oh yes! A fantastically sturdy and big metal box for my tools. Score!

Finally got my butt into Village Merchants. WOW! What a great place. So great i'm hesitant to share this review. If you are looking for a one of a kind vintage gift for yourself or a friend for a great price, this is where you need to go!

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE VILLAGE MERCHANTS!
Can I please live in here? I said please!
The one thing I will say though is be prepared that there is a strong smell in here. It obvious didn't bother me, but it drove my husband up the wall. -

This store looked so small from the outside, we almost decided not to stop. Dad said "Well, we're already here." and "You never know." So glad his wisdom prevailed!
We had so much fun looking around this store. "Exploring" is probably the more correct term. It's hard to believe that they got so much merchandise into that little place. And it's all easy to browse.
They literally have something for everyone. I found some used art supplies, we got a cute shirt for my young nephew, and we also got some hand crafted items. Total mixed bag, and totally fun.
The staff was very friendly and very on point. I wanted to visit the outdoor patio area, but there was a sign on the door saying you couldn't bring unpaid store items out there. Instead of going to the counter with my item (my knee was hurting), I just hung the little shirt for my nephew on a rack near the door... figuring I'd be right back out and I'd grab it then. When I got back inside, the shirt was gone. Lo and behold, a staff member had picked it up and returned it to the kid's area. I didn't locate it right away, but a staff member heard me lamenting to Dad that the cute shirt was gone, and she went and grabbed it for me.
This store is definitely on my list of places to visit when I'm in the Portland area again. -
Review from Misty S.
I go here mostly for kitchen stuff, linens and kitschy stuff. I love seeing the huge variety of stuff and how it changes all the time. Their clothing section never has anything for me and the kid's clothing section is tiny BUT that's what consignment stores are for. I've found some neat toys and books for kids and sometimes they have a good selection of shoes. I've gotten a nice wet/dry hardwood cleaner ($10), a wallet, a beautiful copper hanging fruit basket ($10), books ($5ish), kitchen utensils and the list goes on. I've never sold anything there but that's next on my list!
The staff here is super friendly and accommodating as well. It's always a great shopping experience! -

Went back last weekend and picked up an unopened 1000-piece puzzle for $2 and a Zenith CD/clock radio for $12. Then, yesterday, I went in to sell some stuff. Took in a shopping bag full of random stuff I've been hanging onto for no real reason, and they wrote me a check for $32! That's about equal to what I've spent at Village Merchants thus far. The women doing the buying were quite friendly, and it was kind of fun to see my stuff going out on the floor even as I was still standing there finalizing the deal.
The turnover in merchandise here is tremendous. I imagine one could quite easily get addicted to checking it out at least once a week .1 Previous Review: Show all »

Love this place. The prices are kinda inconsistent, but usually pretty reasonable over all. Most of all, this place is just plain fun. I have found some really unusual finds here. I take out of towners here and they love it.

Review from Jarrod S.
8 bucks is what it came to... A 5 pound scrapers pack and a salt and pepper shaker. Freddy's wanted 6 for the latter and that did not inspire my latest round of art. This 6 buck scrap pack had so much inspiration I actually changed clothes before my latest art project!
They have similar things to other second hand shops, but the layout and assortment are arranged in a way that I want everything to come home with me! This deer antler...Yeah I could make that into a post modernist rant about fabric softener but I gots my eyes on the wildebeast call complete with plasma balldisco curtain with glitter.
They may have that....call first
Awesome shop! -
Review from Erin K.
I pretty much fantasize about this place. I have only visited a couple times, but I am always trying to plan the next time I can visit, particularly with a car (which I only have access to a few times a month) just in case I find some amazing furniture instead of my usual kitchen goods and small decor items.
I love it's cramped feel, the way it seems tiny but as you wind your way through the narrow aisles to the back "patio" you find that it seems endless and no amount of browsing will allow you to see everything in this store. I love that it feels like the most awesome grandma's basement and that you may need to get a little bit dirty to find items.
It has pretty reasonable prices and a little bit of everything. This is a great place to visit in the winter when garage sales are in short supply, and this is way better than a garage sale anyway. -

Pretty nice store which is full of junk with hard to find gems mixed in. The prices are not the best, but if you try hard enough, you are bound to find a sweet deal on something which most people consider garbage. Great deals on books here, I don't recall any book being over $4. There is a lot of kitchen gizmo's and weird little trinkets which any grandmother would love to display on their mantle.
EVERY time I come here I find a new treasure! If you see something you like, GET IT! It won't be there when you come back for it the next day!Listed in: FUN FUN FUN

Review from Anna B.
This is a fun thrift store with a true Ma and Pa vibe to it, and they seem to move merch quickly, so go often to catch new deals. Best for: linens, furniture, kitchen stuff. The price tags are color-coded and they rotate discounts on two colors at a time - 25-50% off.
If you want to sell your things here, be advised that you can either take straight cash or consign to potentially get a little more money. Typically, I just do cash, but I am always surprised at what things they do and do not buy from me. For example, they have turned down oodles of really nice, brand-new clothes (with tags on) over the years but when you browse the clothing racks, you will spot the usual thrifty blemishes like stained or torn clothing. So they must be buying those from someone!
The staff is really nice, but I've heard some terse conversations when people try to return things. There is a sign over the register that clearly states all sales are final, so I would probably be terse as well if I worked there and had to deal with that.Listed in: Hiding Spots

For $20 I got: a cupcake pan, a silverware organizer, an electric mixer, a (new!) cake carrier, 3 mason jars, a mug, and a huge glass container. Yeah!
If you need to outfit a kitchen and Goodwill isn't cutting it, try this place. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to what they carry (knickknacks, ahoy!), but you'll surely find something you can't live without, as long as you don't mind washing the dust off when you get home. Though I'm not too keen on buying someone else's towels, they've got those here, too, as well as linens, shower curtains, and basically everything else you'd spend a fortune on on move-in day. -

Pretty much your standard issue consignment/junk store. Similar in theme and scope to Rerun in NE Portland, except this place has kind of a weird hippie vibe to it (incense burning and dreadlocked employees). Not a big deal, but...
Most of the stuff they have is pretty crappy, but I have found some decent things (although not in a long time). If I was passing by (like I was today), I would probably stop and take a spin through, but not really worth going out of your way for. -

Don't waste your time or money elsewhere for art supplies and kitchen gadgets.
Any given Saturday you will find me deep into cooking something delicious and time consuming in my kitchen.
If you too find yourself drooling at gadgets well above your budget, even if it is as exciting as a food processor, here is your place to buy it. Don't waste your time or money elsewhere.
Great prices on hard to find or expensive pieces. All in great shape and of course the high turn-over rate from us foodies constantly perusing this section.
Among other things you will find:
Artists: Tiles, paints, spray adhesive.
Screen printing stuff, glitter, stamps galore.
Sewers: Sewing boxes, one whole shelf of ever changing fabrics.
Many of which are rare and hard to find.
Bathroom items, Linens, Beautiful curtains.
Whole room of kitchen appliances: New, used, hard to find, vintage.
From a kitchen junkie: Don't even bother kitchen shopping

My house and closet are pretty much furnished in stuff from this place. The staff are always helpful and low-key, they even offered to deliver our ridiculously heavy couch after work and didn't bat an eye when they found out all we had to tip them with was a half full bottle of booze.
It may not be the best place to go to if you're looking for a specific thing, but if you're a little less mission driven you'll always find something worth the trip. Especially good for furniture odds and ends, kitchenware and small giftable items (at least for friends who aren't mortally offended at being given something used).Listed in: My Neighborhood

Goes on my list as one of my favorite places in SE. If you like off the beaten path stuff at excellent prices don't miss Village Merchants. They have a hands off approach, you can just wander around and be mesmerized by the great stuff, but if you need help just ask and they are right there for you. I am going back soon. I think was to overwhelmed my first time to see everything!

This is a great place to find cool knick knacks, cheap furniture and kitchen accessories. There is a lot of new stuff coming in on a weekly basis, so you have to go on a pretty frequent basis to grab the good stuff.
My husband and I were on a mission to find cowboy/ western themed items and found a fantastic leather wrapped table and faux leather rocker here for cheap. -

Definitely love this place. It's a veritable treasure trove of goodies. I advise anyone looking for great things (particular or just in general) to check this place out at least once a week if not more. Things are always changing in there! The other night, just driving by I saw a papsan (not sure on the spelling there) chair out front. You know, those comfy, curl up like a cat in a soft, cushy bowl kinda chairs! Yeah. I grew up with one of these in my house and it remains one of my favorite childhood memories. Anyway, I saw the chair out front and had to run in. How much? Only $50. Sweet deal for one of these! Plus I find sweet little odds and ends in this place every time I go!
Seriously. Check it out -

I love VM!!! Great prices, great selections, great staff...and because they have such competitive pricing the goods turn over fast, which means I enjoy going back about once a month!
Best finds for me are art supplies, kitchen ware, aprons, household decorum, and table linens. They also have a kick-as* selection of affordable furniture, much of it placed outside under covering by the front entrance, Not just reasonably priced, but priced to sell! I have picked up two kitchen chairs from VM for less than $20 each when I needed more chairs. And they are solid and being lovingly used everyday in my busy household of teenagers.
VM is my FAVE thrift store in Portland. Worth the drive from my north Portland home! -

Good thrift store. I scored a pair of Diesel sneakers here for $5! The main bonus is that it's right next to the excellent taco cart "Lindo Michoacan" so you can shop there while you wait for your tacos.

This is my favorite thrift store in town. They have an eclectic mix of really high quality stuff. They don't have a lot of clothes and the furniture is on the expensive side but it's really nice. Where I always score here is with the smaller items--kitchen stuff, fabric, really cool small gift items, shoes, wall hangings, sheets/tablecloths etc. Even if I don't find anything I love to shop here. It's just such a beautiful place, it makes me happy. I want to live here or work here.

This is a unique thrift store, because I think it is a quasi-consignment store. There is usually a good selection of well priced items, including clothes, toys, dishes, and furniture. I found the most beautify tapestry fabric here.

Village Merchants is a great thrift/resale store if you are just browsing and aren't looking for a specific item. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking to buy small furniture--coffee tables, shelves, magazine racks--and the prices are always really reasonable. They also have a decent selection of modern and some vintage clothes (in a variety of sizes), shoes and bags. Look here also for unique linens, dishes and housewares--they have a really big mix of styles and items. They keep building on to this place and it is packed to the gills, but the merchandise gets turned over fast! Best to go during the week when it isn't so crowded (especially around the register area). A final tip: be sure to browse the outside clothes racks which offer something for just about everyone and are half-off. I recently got a 70's era raincoat in perfect condition for $2.50!

I always find what I am looking for at this small but packed resale shop. They allow the public to sell their wares, which makes for a great selection. I found powder blue shoes for six dollars and a lovely wool throw rug for $18.00. The kitchen area always has great stuff, fiesta ware plates and fire king pyrex for the right price. Their craft area is always delightful. The clothes can use improvement, but they seem to be limited in space. Go in the outside back room, this is where the gems are found. I found a fifties poodle lamp for $ 5.00 on sale, she needed fixing but works fine now, I call her poo-poo. Support this store. Oh yeah last week my roomie and I walked a fifties chrome kitchen table home for $15.00- they said it was stained, a table cloth has worked just fine, I have also bought better items, which are abundant for the size, such as a comfy chair for $100.00. There is a variety of great stuff. Staff is mellow and will help if needed. Go and enjoy this small mecca of wonderment.
