This place is the best divey breakfast diner in Colorado. They make the crispy hash browns in front of you and it feels very welcoming, like you just joined a club by eating there!

Yummy greasy spoon diner food.

Good greasy spoon diner. Don't go expecting linen tablecloths, and wear something you won't mind getting some grease on. Breakfast fare is solid, but nothing special. The hash browns are good, and so are the pancakes, but nothing extraordinary. Coffee is passable but if it's important to you, bring it from elsewhere.
Fine for a fast meal.. -

I can see it now., this place should be on Diners, Drive in and Dives if that show ever comes to Boulder. Not many of these places survive in Boulder so that's something to note. It's steps away from CU and in the heart of Boulder's Downtown, maybe even the heart, probably not the liver though.

Don't let the five stars fool you: this is not the Ritz.
However, it is one of the best greasy spoons I've ever been to. Exceptional breakfast for not a lot of money. Do not miss the hashbrowns.
I hope you like clarified butter. -

Last week I had the Cheese Burger at Village Coffee Shop. It was really quite good. It was big tasty and came with a lot of good french fries. There are a lot of places in Boulder who tout their Burger, but most of them are terrible. I wasn't even expecting a killer burger here and Bam! Perfect. and the price was right too. Like five bucks or something.

Village Coffee Shop deserves to be noticed for extending the frontiers of breakfast science. Pancakes with bacon in the batter? Oh, yea.
Truth is, everything I've tried here has been high-fat, high-flavor, high-comfort breakfasty goodness. -

So its kinda funny that they scream "virgin" if you haven't eaten here before......therefore I added a star. The food was terrible. My hash browns were literally floating in oil.........FREAKIN GROSS. If I was super hung over.....maybe........ but most likely I will go break my fast somewhere that I don't feel like vomiting afterwards.

THE Boulder diner, breakfast burrito=filling & delicious!! Friendly folks everywhere, and awesome, straightforward diner breakfast. Never had a bad meal after half dozen visits.

Boulder, CO
Foodies beware! Great service, but no flavor. Went for a hangover brunch on New Year's Day and left feeling worse than before. We ordered biscuits and gravy, hash browns, and blueberry pancakes.
The biscuits and gravy were disgusting. Very sour, too much black pepper, and unimpressive biscuits. And even though the hash browns had great texture and color, mine were cold. The pancakes were HUGE, which is good, but they were on the burnt side.
On a positive note though, excellent service and a refreshing atmosphere. Oh! And they have awesome, little ice cubes! The place brings together every kind of person. I'm willing to try give the place one more shot if a group of friends pressure me into brunchin' there.
This review is probably too nice... -

I would risk a heart attack to eat the pancakes and crinkle French fries evey day if I could. Plus, it's cheap and there are always awesome specials. It's really hard to choose between breakfast and lunch.

I'm skeptical of people that don't like puppies, music, and sushi. I'm also skeptical of anyone that would not give this place 5 stars. Yes, it's a diner type breakfast joint, but the best one you've ever been to. If you want to eat light, don't come here. If you like crispy, brown hashbrowns, fast service, everything cooked perfectly every time, green and red Tabasco on the table without having to ask, cheap prices, and lots of down home choices - come here. It gets busy on the weekends, but tables turn over fast.
Come in with a hangover for an extra satisfying experience.
Make sure to tell them that it's your first time eating there! -

We were ordering food to go and the lady that was working there just wouldn't take our order. I think she was upset we held the door open for a second.
Then when our food was ready, it was just sitting behind the counter for 5 minutes. Almost just went behind and grabbed it.
Bad attitude, rude service, sub-par food (nothing special).. I'm sure there are plenty other places in Boulder u can get a cheap breakfast. Don't go here! -

Denver, CO
2 1/2 stars.
I went w/three versus two stars b/c customer service is top notch.
The ladies behind the bar are incredibly hospitable and attentive! My cup of coffee and water were constantly filled.
Now for the food.
Not sure where everyone else has dined in the past. Most of the reviews seem to be coming from a point of nostalgia versus unbiased opinion. I grew up in New Jersey- the home of Diner's so, I know what consists of good diner food *and* bad diner food.
Most of the food I have had at the Village Coffee Shop is okay. After two visits, I probably won't return. At the same time, I wouldn't adamantly refuse to go if a group of friends were headed that way.
The eggs were a bit runny.
The biscuit and sausage gravy is *awful*! All I tasted was salt and pepper. The sausage looked OLD. ew.
The home fries were bland. I dumped salt, pepper, and hot sauce on them so that I'd taste something.
The coffee was Mmmmm, Good.
Dear Yelp Readers: Diner aka "comfort food" does not have to be super salty or thrown together as it is at the Village Coffee Shop.
I'm still in search of that Boulder Diner 'hole in the wall' which offers tasty, reasonable priced breakfast.
For now, Ill stick w/the slightly higher priced restaurants: Foolish Craig's, Turley's, Q's and/or the Buff. Where tasteful plates are standard, not optional. -
Review from Sam H.
After reading the most recent review of the Village Coffee Shop by Terry, I felt obligated to finally write my own.
I have eaten at this restaurant no less than 20 times. Anytime someone visits, I always make sure to drag them, hungover, to the Village Coffee Shop.
Yes, they do use a lot of grease, on everything, but specifically on the hash browns. If you do not want a lot of oil on your plate, skip the hash browns and get one of their delicious pancakes or some other substitute.
This restaurant was actually featured on The Food Network; where they followed an egg from conception (?) through consumption in a Village Coffee Shop omelet.
The omelets are very good, as are almost all the items on the menu. The breakfast burrito disappoints, but the Country Fried Steak here is amazing. Consistently the best Country Fried Steak in Boulder and presumably beyond.
Service is prompt, friendly and has an old-fashioned feel to it. All the cooking is done right in the open, which might be why some people get freaked out on the oil. If you saw how most restaurant meals were cooked, you would feel differently about those also.
There are two things I do not like about this place.
1) If it is your first time eating at the Village Coffee Shop, the waitress will scream "Attention everyone! We have a Village virgin here!" The fourth time you hear this you want to punch someone in the face. Screaming at 10 AM on a Saturday should be forbidden.
2) There is limited seating. I believe the back of the staffs' shirts list the size of the restaurant as 900 square feet. I typically will avoid this place on holiday weekends or CU home games. There will often be a line out the door.
Overall, excellent breakfast/lunch greasy spoon. Great food, good prices, solid service. -

Talk about a truck stop!
This place is hands down awesomeness. You can get a huge awesome meal for about $6 and since I flew into Denver from Houston I was hungry and wanted a huge meal.
The special for the day were these chocolate chip pancakes which were to die for and then the biskets and gravy was so delicious! I also got sausage and eggs which were perfect.
Looking for a small gem in boulder? This is it and this is the only breakfast place your going to need your entire life. Yum!1 Previous Review: Show all »

First things first, if you're in the mood for French toast DO NOT go here! I was SO looking forward to french toast but sadly, it was pancakes just folded over. I don't see why everyone is ranting and raving about their hash browns, yes they are crunchy in some spots, but they are also soggy in others. They are pretty bland and plain. We had to wait for about 5 min or so, which was surprising it being a Tuesday after 11am but that's no biggie. My husband got the blueberry pancakes which he loved. The apple juice was some of my fav apple juice, the tropicana simply apple. It wasn't anything great but wasn't anything nasty. I don't think I'll be going back and I don't think I'd suggest it to anyone either.

Review from Hannah E.
When I get so angry when I think about how in Boulder you have to practically pay $15-20 to get breakfast in a sit-down place, no matter where you go or how shitty the food is, and then on top of that you have to deal with some nearby patron screaming that they have to know immediately whether their hash browns contain trans fats, I SCREAM!!.... and then I go to Village Coffee Shop.
The food is nothing remarkable, but always tasty and filling and GREASY. And served in big portions. And cheap. And the atmosphere is unpretentious.
You can watch the cooks make your stuff and track your meal from beginning to end, if you're so inclined. I love the hash browns, even though they could definitely benefit from some onions or something, and their biscuits and gravy will power you up for practically the entire day. I'd avoid the bacon, though, which is practically just shriveled black twisted husks. Also don't order anything that sounds like it might be trying to be gourmet. Just don't. It is a greasy spoon and it does greasy spoon exactly how greasy spoon should be done. Nothing more.Listed in: Like Being At Home

Of every place I miss in Boulder the Village Coffee Shop has my heart. A Saturday tradition for years this place is a legend when it comes to breakfast. Order anything, I promise it'll be good.
What's even better is the most amazing staff on the planet. Always greeting you by name with a huge, genuine smile - can't be beat.
I MISS YOU!!!! -

Even with all the health-nuts in Boulder, you will still find people lining up to eat at this greasy spoon. There's a good reason for this... well, actually, two good reasons:
1) The food is good old traditional greasy salty breakfast fare.
2) The place is super tiny, so you have to queue up outside to get in.
This place is so small and jam-packed with tables, it's really a wonder the fire marshal allows it. But I'm not complaining, the place has a personality all its own. The open kitchen with the extra long griddle, the stacks of eggs in flats, the sachrine sweet/grumpy-ass waitresses, the old-timey booths from another era altogether: it's really the epitome of what a greasy spoon ought to be.
Things are pretty straight forward here. They use real eggs instead of those nasty powdered eggs some diners use. They have a selection of all the yummy breakfast meats you can thing of. Pancakes. Waffles. Nothing fancy. Nothing catering to the newest fad diet.
If you've read some of my other breakfast reviews you know I'm super picky about hashbrowns. In my book, they need to be shredded and super crunchy. I like them with tons of salt, no ketchup, but that's a personal preference. These guys do great hashbrowns, just the way I like them, just the way hashbrowns are meant to be. And you get a lot of them too. God-bless-you Village Coffee Shop! -

Yet another great Boulder breakfast joint. The Village is more traditional, less fancy, and it's got great diner kitsch. I used to live by here, and this was a great place for a hearty breakfast (and yes, believe the hype, it's like a Mecca for the hungover!).
The downside is that the Village is small and popular, meaning that sometimes you can find yourself with quite the wait (and with no real waiting space inside, this could mean a cold wait in the winter). But it's worth it.
My favorite part is the exposed grill and the coffee counter. You want the true Village experience? Sit yourself at the counter where you're so close to the grill that you could flip your own eggs if you needed to. You'll leave with a full belly and a layer of grease on your skin, as if you'd been grilling the hashbrowns yourself. It's like short-order cook fantasy camp!Listed in: Fresh Starts

I hate to say it but I really LOVE this place... Total greasy spoon, taste great while you are eating it - then it sticks with you all day and packs enough calories to last you a week.
It's traditional breakfast fare without a hint of the stereo-typical Boulder, whole-grain, organic, fat free, froo froo, fluffy foods. Bacon, sausage, eggs, buttered toast, jam, jelly AND AND AND best of all - the most amazing, crispy, crunchy hashbrowns.
You can only stand to eat here once in a while but taken in moderation - it's worth it. -
Review from Steve K.
Broomfield, CO
I've been going here for almost 15 years, and I always order the "Egg Burrito". We nicknamed this place simply "Grease", and they use a lot of oils in cooking . . . but it tastes so good. The Hash Browns come out golden brown and flaky!
If it's your first time there, please mention it to the Server and ask her about "Village Virgins".
The Good: Egg Burrito and of course, the wonderful Servers--some of them have worked there for 20 years!
The Bad: Get there before 11:30 on a weekday or you'll be fighting for seats with the CU students.
The Ugly: It may not be "pretty to look it", but the place is genuine, the food is fantastic, and the meals are cheap! -

Great breakfast spot. I arrived and only had a short time to eat, so I was pleased when my order arrived just about minute after I ordered. You know these counter-top breakfast spots just keep the main ingredients rollin' all morning.
This is the kind of breakfast spot that an individual man can walk into and feel respectable. You got your spot at the counter, quick coffee service from a smiling waitress, newspaper there on the counter for you. Great portions, and as a bonus, they have the oversized bottles of Green Tabasco right there for you. -

Ouch, "tdog T."
Sure there are flies buzzing around, and sure this is not four-star dining (well, in my book it is), but this is a greasy spoon. This is what you expect from a greasy spoon.
Hash browns are greasy and crispy. The pancakes are decently sized. I always eat too much here, probably because I order the pancakes breakfast with a side of hash browns. Gotta work on my self-control.
Sandwiches are what you'd expect from a diner. This is breakfast, friends. -
Review from Terry C.
Boulder, CO
I'm sorry to have to bring down the score, here, but I have to give it a resounding "Meh."
The menu is amazing. The service is fast. The food is even quite good. But it is cooked in such a profoundly amazing overabundance of oil that it TOTALLY grossed me out to watch them cooking.
Seriously, I understand that it's good to keep things from burning and sticking to the grill, but that doesn't mean I want my food cooked on a lake of grease. I got serious indigestion from the quantity and quality of oil used. Everything was soggy.
This is a greasy spoon, yes, but I like every other greasy spoon I've been to. Maybe I got a bad cook that day. Then again, maybe they're a greasy lake. Either way, my stomach has warned me against eating here again.
That said, if you can handle incredibly greasy food, they have all the charm you could ever want from a place that advertises themselves as "900 sqft of reality surrounded by Boulder."
I may have gotten the square footage wrong in that quote. I don't want to steer you away from this place. I just want you to know what you're about to experience. Can you handle it? -
Review from Max S.
Boulder, CO
I feel like I'm missing something, because everybody else I know loves this place.
It's just not my thing. I like greasy food, but to what end? I love flavor, and there is none in the dishes here. I find it bland, uninteresting, loud, and super crowded. Oh, and I'm tall and I can't really fit at the super hard plywood booths.
I had a couple questions for the waitress one morning and that pissed her off like crazy because they handle so much volume, and we were having trouble hearing eachother.
Definitely not pretentious.... and I guess it's cheap... I'm trying to say some nice things, can you tell? -
Review from Melissa H.
Broomfield, CO
I've been to the coffee shop more times than I can remember, it's a greasy spoon sort of place. Seat yourself in the mornings when it's packed... and it often is... with the line extending out the door. It's fantastic when you've had a long night. It's a no frills atmosphere and the staff is frank and straightforward, but not rude :o)
I think that the breakfast is standard, but the pseudo hubby loves to get a single cake, hasbrowns (crispy), and a side of sausage gravy. And one of the best parts about the restaurant is that they have the good ice... the kind that is in tiny little chunks that sort of press together between your teeth when you bite it. You don't find that very many places anymore!Listed in: PMS Heaven

Honestly, I almost socked my friend in the face when she told our server that I'd never been there before and was thus welcomed with that "village virgin" nonsense.
After that though, the food is awesome. Classic greasy breakfast fare. Especially the HASHBROWNS! None of that seasoned home-fries crap. -

Ok, I'll admit it I have an affinity, no a fetish, for these hole-in-the-wall greasy spoons. I stopped by this little gem during the DNC. Living in the melting pot that is the Bay Area it was oddly refreshing being the only colored patron. I ordered the special: beef with mashed potatoes on toast for I think $5.99. Simply delicious. For desert I had a pie, apple I think. anyhow, it was excellent. The waitresses were all really nice and attentive. I think the total bill was $10 or less.
Good grub at cheap prices...my kind of thing! -

Best Coffee Shop Ever.
Ever.
LA.
San Francisco.
Ever.
Highlight, if that isn't enough?
Best Blueberry Pancakes EVER.
Ever.
The syrup cannot penetrate the perfect exterior, therefore remaining crunchy the entire time.
And they helped put some runner friends of mine through school.
But I knew the joint first. I remember destroying the back taillight of a car with a moving truck... and calmly put a note on the car, walked in to the Village, and proceeded to have one of the most delicious and peaceful breakfast's of all time. And that is after I destroyed a car.
I love you Village. I love you.
I miss you and need a shirt too. -

GREAT Greasy Spoon. If you love Waffle House (I do) and are craving greasy good breakfast, while still being able to see the kitchen (to make sure they do it right) - this is the place in Boulder.

A friend in Denver told me this was the "best breakfast" I would ever eat. I was skeptical...so I checked out the Village Coffee Shop.
My friend was right! This is the BEST breakfast of anywhere I have eaten. The hashbrowns are the specialty, but everything on the menu is great! I make special trips to the Village Coffee Shop whenever I am in town.
Make sure to tell them it's your first time eating there! -

Clue #1: Their house phone is a pay phone hanging on the wall. Seriously. I watched the waitress answer to take a to-go order.
Clue #2: There is one bathroom with one potty for all customers at this joint.
Clue #3: Everyone was either shoveling food in their mouths or laughing loudly.
This is a non-Boulder restaurant in Boulder, the way that the Cherry Cricket aspires to be non-Cherry Creek. We went here for a hangover brunch, and I got an incredible patty melt with the crispiest yummiest fries.
They have the great worm shaped ice for their sodas and its the best for a diet coke when one has had too much bourbon the night before.
I will be back!! -

I ate here just once, in September of 1977, when driving across the USA. Thirty-four years later I am still haunted by their heaping and magnificent homemade hash browns. I am glad to discover on this page that the Village still exists because if I ever pass through Boulder again, I will surely eat there.

Princeton, NJ
As my friend nursed her birthday hangover, we decided on breakfast at this local greasy spoon. As she is a nj transplant, and i a resident, the need for a good greasy spoon/diner breakfast place is absolutely necessary.
We got what we ordered in our breakfast combos. First off, they came out lightning fast. Like unhumanly so. I must say that the home fries were EXCELLENT. They were sublime- the perfect balance of crispy and moist (unlike a dried out home fry). The breakfast hit the spot and we had unlimited coffee. The best part was that it was just a little over 10.00 for breakfast for two. They announce loudly if you are new to the place too, which luckily my friend did not subject me too. It's a great place for a quick bad-for-you meal and it won't leave your wallet too empty.
