Best pizzas in Davis. Love their Spinach pizza.
Could be a couple dollars cheaper, but $18 isn't bad for a large pizza of this quality.
If you desire a sit-down experience, visit the related Village Pizza and Grill across town, which has an identical pizza menu. -

A nice little place in downtown Davis, the Village Bakery has okay food for a great price though overall it is a disappointment.
Coffee here is on par with what can be found at the gas station and the pizza is forgettable. Salads taste okay but are pre-made and can't be customized. Feel free to pick up a pastry, however, as they're not half bad. -

Are you kidding me??? Amazing pizzas!!!
I've been coming here for years. The first time I tried them was a halloween when they were giving away free slices to trick or treaters. What a concept!
The food here is made with much care. Plenty of variety. To me, the crust is king.
This pizza is best enjoyed outside at the tables...great for people watching. -

I recently ate a chocolate chip cookie from here. It was good sure, but not like the best thing ever. A friend had thechocolate molten lava cake, small, but very rich andt
tasty. A nice location right by the amtrak station! -

by far my favorite pizza place in Davis. I highly recommend the vegetarian pizza, probably the best veg slice I have had.

Village Bakery is hands down my favorite pizza joint in town. It's a small bakery tucked away in downtown, right next to the Amtrak station. It's very easy to miss when you're walking around, which adds to its appeal since it's so quaint. It's definitely one of Davis's best kept secrets.
You can order pizza by the slice here, and the prices are cheap! Cheese goes for $2.25 a slice, pepperoni is $2.50, and vegetarian (my favorite!!) is only $2.75. The slices are huge; one or two slices can easily fill you up for a meal. The vegetarian pizza comes complete with tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, zucchinis, olives, and feta cheese. Mmm. The crust is thin and crispy... it's one of the best pizza crusts I've ever tried. You can also order their specialty pizzas (prices range from $14-16), but I've never ordered them before. They look really good, though!
It's nice to come here on a sunny day where you can grab some pizza and eat outside in their seating area by the sidewalk. The store itself is very small (I believe it can only fit up to 5 customers inside), so most people either eat outside or take it to-go.
Now that I won't be living in Davis anymore, I'm going to miss Village Bakery so badly (note to Village Bakery: please move to San Francisco!!). -

Veggie STAPLE pizza. Gross.
I don't know how or why it ended up in my pizza but nonetheless there was a staple and that is unacceptable. What were they doing? Rolling pizza dough by the cash register where the stapler is? That is wrong on so many levels. I talked to the cashier and cook, they offered me more pizza. Surprisingly i denied hoping to get a refund but was never offered it.
It is safe to say I will never go back here. -
Review from Karen H.
The quality of the pizza this time around was definitely sub-par. The crust was burnt, and there was no pizza sauce and barely only cheese! (We got the pepperoni pizza)
Surprisingly the village pizza and grill's pizza has surpassed the quality of this place (it used to be the other way around)
I definitely recommend that you go several blocks down to Village Pizza where the pizza tastes better, and it is more spacious!1 Previous Review: Show all »

I wish I had discovered Village Bakery earlier!!! Their pizza is PERFECT.. i dare say it's even better than woodstocks :O their crust is so perfectly crunchy yet not too hard. omg. I'm drooling while writing thing.
Try the Margarita pizza. It's totally worth it. -

This is the smaller shack or the original to the one further down on G Street. It's small inside, and they have pizza by the slice or you can order a large (only size available) or their pastries. I think it would be nice to eat here before you catch the train, since the station is just on the other side of the tracks.
If you want Village Pizza by the slice, you should come here, as the other location doesn't sell pizza by the slice. Also, I think for the price you can't really complain; although I think the G Street location makes their pizza a lot better (more sauce, more cheese, more toppings). -

I definitely think that the pizza at Village Bakery is better than Woodstock's. Before all of your Woodstock die-hard fan disagree with me, Village Bakery's pizza have a more classic taste and always tastes fresh. Woodstock's is more modern and can be a little dry. I have tried most of the pizza's at Village Bakery (just a slice or two) and I like every one.
What I recommend:
Margarita - fresh tomatoes, parmesan, basil, garlic, mozzarella
Hawaiian - Canadian bacon and pineapple -

While googling for "focaccia" breads in Davis, it lead me to the Village Bakery. Then I yelped it. Turns out, they have amazing pizza along with their bread. Who knew?! This little dingy shack that I overlook and passed by a million times which I even once questioned, "why are they still in business," is actually an amazing place!
I ordered a pepperoni pizza and the taste was good. I wouldn't say amazing b/c I think the pizza has been sitting there for a few hours and it sorta lost that stringy cheese layer that you get w/ pizza straight out of the oven. It left a solid cheesy layer (which I hate) that indicates, "this pizza was made a few hours ago and we are just keeping it warm for the next customer."
The loaf of focaccia bread and pizza was $6. I think it's reasonable. I haven't tried the bread yet so I don't know how good it is but the gentleman at Peet's who was standing next to me, asked me about the loaf of bread I was holding. He said, "hmmm, what is that? That looks amazing." So if a loft of bread looks amazing in a see through plastic bag, it better taste just as good.
Also, they also have these delicious looking pasteries which I didn't get a chance to get i.e. cupcakes, cakes, etc. I will try them next time.
Also, there are two doors. The one with the broken knob is meant to be broken b/c that's not an entrance. I was standing there for 30 secs, trying to open a knob-less door until this lady was like, "oh, that's not the entrance." LOL, hella moded. -

The pizza here is amazing! I like eggplant and spinach on mine. Tastes healthy and yummy=)
Great service here. Not that many places to sit inside, but there are some tables outside. Usually I just order it to go. -

Good pizza and baked goods but long wait when they are busy. I've walked out many time because they are so slow. I'd imagine an extra counter hand would help during peak times.

The pizza is very good, the bread is also fantastic
They make the buns for the hotdogger and Burgers and Brew
the bread can also be found at Nugget, the Co-Op, etc -

Davis, CA
With so many rave reviews for their pizza and being a chief supplier of breads for many other Davis restaurants, I owed it myself to venture to Village Bakery. I was not disappointed.
If you're ordering by the slice like I did, you have 4 choices: plain 'ol cheese, pepperoni, vegetarian, and the meat/veggie combo. These are priced at $2.25, $2.50, $2.75 and $3.00, respectively, and there is a combo with a slice, a salad, and a drink for $5.50. I got myself a slice of pepperoni and vegetarian. Figured they'd be good benchmarks for any pizza joint worth its salt!
Let me tell you, both slices were damned tasty. Overwhelming? No. The taste is balanced and fresh -- something you'd expect from all places. So, you've got fresh ingredients going on top of dough created by the masters of bread here.
It's all best when it comes out piping hot from the oven, I'm sure. Hopefully, you can manage to get a fairly fresh slice that hasn't been sitting around for awhile. Though, I imagine it'd still be worthy of some praise at that point.
The staff seemed very chipper while taking my order and prepping up someone's pizza for the oven. It's passion, baby. I'm sure of it.
By golly, these people love making pizza and people love eating it; it's a blissful cycle. With tender loving care baked into their pizza and breads, you may just want to give it a try; you may already have at other restaurants!

Richard Pro here with another review.
This is one of the most disappointing pizza locations in Davis. I had high expectations when I came here because my friends said this place has fresher ingredients and large pizzas.
Very pricey, maybe $4 a slice and more than $20 for a large. If you like pizza delivered, the interior won't matter, but I actually sat indoors to eat this time. I usually never eat pizza at the restaurant, so this was a first for me. There were two tables inside, and each table could sit 2. It's cramped and uncomfortable and the staff look bored and tired. Definitely affected my review of the place. The staff touch your cash and then touch the pizza. Yum.
Crust, cheese, sauce, and toppings. The big 4 for any pizza. Nothing is exceptional here. Have I tasted exceptional before? Yes, Fast Pizza Delivery in San Jose. This is definitely not exceptional. It is not salty or greasy, which I like. However, I have not returned since my first visit a year ago. -

Best pizza in davis, and maybe in all of the west coast, I'm not kidding.
Try every pizza. They are so good. Too good.
P.S. Try the veggie pizza even if you're not a big fan of veggies. It'll freakin knock your socks off. -

Instructions on how to eat their ham and cheese croissant:
1. Wake up early on a Saturday morning
2. Walk or bike (not drive, it's unnatural in Davis) to the Bakery's corner
3. Order a ham and cheese croissant
4. Eat it, sitting, walking, or standing outside, preferably with your eyes closed and a warm drink.
Yum. I was going to make it four, not five stars, for running out of some items so early in the day but that just means that they must be doing a hell of a job. I can't knock them for that.

Review from Justin C.
Dear god, this has some of the best food in Davis. The pizza is known to be good but also their bread as well. The desserts there are also some of the best. And they know we're college students so it's fairly cheap stuff. You can't go wrong here.
How did I not discover this place until my 3rd year?? -
Review from Pauline D.
Gilroy, CA
I feel like I've been living under a rock. All those years I spent in Davis and not once did I give this place a try until now, four years and so late. I'm such an imbecile!
If you think it's just another pizza place, as I once did, you're in for a surprise. The veggie pizza slice ($2.75) offers a nice gathering of zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers, red onions, tomato sauce and cheeses. I've had better veggie toppings, but the real star of this pie slice is the CRUST. Thin and slightly crisp on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside with the perfect amount of chewiness and flavor. I seriously have never enjoyed pizza crust this much.
I also picked up a gigantic scone in their seasonal flavor of strawberry and anise ($2). I didn't know how the combination would work but it was delicious! The tiny anise seeds added a unique liquorice-tinged sweetness that played off the butter and fruit well.
If you're trying to get your hands on their specialty breads, come early! I wanted their jalapeno cheese bread but they were sold out before I got there at 11AM. But wait! Apparently the Co-Op carries their bread, too! -

Their pizza melts in my mouth. Mmmmm.
I don't need delivery pizza any more - Village Bakery will give me my fix, carry-out style. It's good enough that I will lug myself out of my pjs and fascinating trashy reality TV show to go get it.
There are lots of great choices, unique and traditional... everyone will find pizza to love at Village Bakery. Every pizza I have tried is delicious, even when they don't use red sauce (my addiction). They are the perfect end to a loooooong week. -

Pizza combo makes for a good lunch! Comes with slice of pizza, side salad, and drink.
I got the combo pizza and it was definitely a surprise. Very flavorful and unique toppings. Yum yum. Made me want to come back for more. I would definitely order a whole pizza here for dinner, and I wouldn't feel guilty!
The location is not ideal. Hard to find parking for this area and it's across from Amtrak. The inside is super super small and there's only 2 small tables inside. There's outdoor seating, but in the winter it's no bueno. They also have a good dessert selection. Hehe, too bad I was full before I could order any. -

I love the coffee here (reminds me Dunkin' Donuts) and the employees are nice. But if you're going to call yourself a bakery and you open at 5:30am, then I think it's reasonable to expect you to have bakery goods ready to go at 5:30am. We go in here before catching the train each morning at about 6:30am and sometimes there are fresh baked goods, sometimes only day-old goods, and sometimes nothing. I just don't get it. A bakery that doesn't bake?!?!?! I'm also not super crazy about the pizza, it was good, but not out of this world good.

Village Bakery (only the Pizzas)
Food: 5/5
Drinks: N/A
The LOOK: 3/5
Service: 5/5
Overall Rating: 4/5
My rating is only for the Pizzas. They are the best pizzas around. They sell them by the slice and also by the whole pizza. All in a nice hot stone oven. The pizzas always come out nice and crisp (even a little burnt, but in a good way) on the bottom and chewy on the top. I always go for the pepperoni (my litmus) and sometimes the veggie. If only I could eat village bakery pizzas every day, haven't actually had one in a long time since I just can't stop eating it when there is one in front of me, LOL.
Great place for thin crust, specialty pizzas, served by some of the friendliest and cutest people (women and men) around. You gotta try it at least once. -

Love the triple Chocolate mousse dessert. Pizza is great too - very fresh and high quality ingredients - not quite sure if it's quite 4.5 star average though. However, it's still good food and they are 4-star in my book.

Bought a chocolate chip cookie and almond croissant here, and both were delicious and really inexpensive. The cookie was chewy and satisfied my chocolate craving with its abundance of chocolate chips. The croissant was nice and flaky, and I popped it in the oven for a few minutes to give it that extra oomph since I bought it later in the afternoon (I'm assuming the pastries are fresher in the morning).
The girl behind the register was super friendly and patient (I took a while to decide what I wanted..everything looked so good).
Might try their pizza and bread next time. Will definitely be back for more pastries! -

Good lava cupcake. Good slice of pepperoni pizza but not as good as Woodstock's a block away (although Woodstock's pepperoni pizza is much greasier, but tastier). I probably would not have either of these items again here. Note that the pizza at the sister restaurant Village Grill down the street rates 5 stars by me. Great selection of freshly baked breads, many types that you can buy at Nugget Market. I bought one ("eli") that is a loaf of French baguettes. Bread prices look less than at Nugget.

I truly like this place. It's kinda one of those hole in the wall bakeries, but man oh man, the pizza! the bread! the pizza crust!
If you are a big fan of thick, bready, greasy, woodstock-esque pizzas, this is not the place for you. But if you appreciate the thin, rustic delicate balance of crust and toppings, you'll like this place as much as I do. They usually have the vegetable, cheese and pepperoni out by the slice and you can special order their other flavors by the pie. The prices are great -- about $2.50/slice and $14-$16 for a large pizza.
Their breads are definitely worth checking out to. I'm a big fan of their ciabatta, jalepeno cheese, seeded batard, sliced wheat and foccacia.
Another thing I really like about this place is that you can buy par-baked pizza crusts for only a couple dollars. That's a GREAT deal considering you are buying it pretty fresh and it's already practically made (much better than that awful $7 packaged stuff at the store..). -

Best pizza in Davis IMO. I LOVE the crust (then again, I usually prefer thin crust anyway) and whatever random desserts I have gotten from here were all good as well.

One word. Wow. I had the most wonderful scone EVER. I didn't know they could be so light yet substantial plus it was a seasonal peach scone. That, a cup of great coffee and a well made sour baguette, $5. What a deal!

Hands down the best pizza slices in Davis. It's a take-and-go type of place, though, because of the lack of seating. They even have packaged side salads to make your meal complete!

Review from Jennifer C.
Millbrae, CA
Mmm, good fresh out of the oven pizza. It has a considerable amount of topping, right amount of crust, and not covered in pools of oil. They are constantly baking new pizzas, so you rarely get a slice that has been sitting. Also, that means there's a lot of people coming in buying it. They have a super good deal for 5.50 where you get a large slice of either cheese, pepperoni or veggie pizza, a side salad, and a drink. The drinks include: juice squeezes, minute maid, sodas, water, and Snapple. NOT BAD.
Two out of the three times I've been here, I got FREE BREAD. The first time, they were packing up for the night and we asked about the bread. They said they give the leftovers to the homeless shelter (wow, what a generous and loving restaurant. how philanthropic!). Then, they offered us a free loaf that was delicious. I hope they didn't think we were homeless. Then the second time, my very AZN friend asked for free bread and they gave us some.
Pizza, good! Workers, good! Bread, good! -

Dear Village Bakery,
I miss you!!
Please move your butts down to the east bay (and bring the hot guy with the piercings) I have yet to find a place in the bay area that makes bread like you, especially your focaccia bread. My paninis don't taste as yummy without your bread.
Your loyal customer,
Jessica

This is part of my goal to try every restaurant in Davis before I graduate in the fall.
I come here every so often to get a slice of their pizza. It's always good here and I don't think any other place in Davis can beat it, especially at the price they're selling it. -
Review from Albert W.
Best pizza in town. NYC style. Only other place in town that is close is that Greek place. If you go over to Sac, there's more choices (Zeldas and Giavonnai). End of the day, Sac is too far and Village Bakery is more than good enough for the Davis area.
Famous for: Pizza (combo, chicken with white sauce) and bread, in that order. -
Review from Hunter G.
Davis, CA
Can you review a bakery if you only go in to get a cup of coffee while you wait for the train? Well I can for I am Hunter, yelper of bakeries and stuff.
I asked for a cappuccino then cased the joint. It's about as big as my bedroom and has a few desserts behind the glass and about four shelves of bread on the wall behind the counter. Funny thing, I couldn't smell any bread. ??? It looked good but shouldn't fresh baked bread give off the aroma of... fresh bread. I thought that was weird.
Then I got my coffee. Have you ever stared at some bird poop on the ground for about 30 seconds and then closed your eyes and seen the negative impression. You know, like a photo negative. No? Well try it and you'll know what my cap looked like. That happens when you fill the cup with milk first and then pour the shot of espresso in. It doesn't look pretty. And who does that? It's espresso first then milk foam, people.
But I'm being overly critical. It didn't taste bad and I didn't even try what they are best known for-- the bread. The "Now comes in unscented" bread.Listed in: must.... stay.... awake....

The pizza was the best I had in a while, but the service was so horrible I have yet to be back. I know its not a sit down and eat place, but after waiting hours for a pizza, and checking on it a few times, they had misplaced our order and finally started it at the 2 hour mark.
No apologies or anything.
